Our New Council CEO Girl Scouts of Utah names longtime senior staff to Chief Executive Officer Dear Friends of Girl Scouts of Utah, On behalf of the Board of Directors, I am pleased to announce that after a nationwide search, Lisa Hardin-Reynolds has been named the new Chief Executive Officer of Girl Scouts of Utah. In addition to her extensive experience, Lisa brings with her a passion for the organization, our volunteers, girls, and staff. Her rapport among the community, donors, partners and you, our valued members, throughout the state will help her move GSU forward.

Lisa is a mother of two Girl Scouts, and is originally from Salt Lake City. She has been with GSU for over 29 years, most recently as our Vice President of Program and Outdoor Property. Lisa started with GSU as an Outdoor Program Specialist at Camp Cloud Rim, where she combined her social work degree from Weber State University with her love of the outdoors and helping people grow. During her tenure with our council, she has served as Chief Operations Officer as well as Interim CEO, and has provided oversight and leadership in the areas of program, membership, volunteer support, information technology, finance, property, outdoor program, and product sales.

Lisa has been instrumental in building GSU’s incredible outdoor program, helping thousands girls create lifelong memories and gain a love of the outdoors at Camp Cloud Rim and Trefoil Ranch. She helped lead seven Camporees, our hugely popular triennial three-day camping event, for hundreds of girls and volunteers. Her dedication to the Girl Scouts and her tireless work on behalf of girls in our state, also earned her the Thanks Badge Awards I and II. Nationally, she was appointed by the Girl Scouts of the USA to serve on the safety activity task group, property and outdoor program conference planning team, and was a host council lead for the 2014 GSUSA National Convention in Salt Lake City. She also serves as a standards visitor for the American Camp Association.

When asked about her new role, Lisa said, “I am excited for this amazing opportunity to continue to work alongside our incredible volunteers, staff, and board to further our mission of building girls of courage, confidence, and character, while we continue to bring Girl Scouts to the families in our state. Girl Scouts of Utah unites girls and young women, providing unique girl-led and girl-focused opportunities that have never been more needed or relevant as they navigate this complex world, and become future leaders.”

Science, Technology, Engineering, Math, and Girl Scouts International Women’s Day

For the second year in-a-row, Girl Scouts of Utah partnered with Salt Lake County’s Clark Planetarium and L3 Technologies to celebrate International Women’s Day. The event focused on women engineers and scientists, and encouraged girls to get interested in STEM. Over 100 girls and their families explored the exhibits at Clark Planetarium, participated in hands-on STEM activities including building robots, and met incredible women engineers!

STEM No-School Day On February 18, children all across Utah had the day off from school, but that didn’t stop our Girl Scouts from spending the day learning about STEM. When nearly 50 girls arrived at the Girl Scouts of Utah Salt Lake City office that morning, they were welcomed by staff, volunteers, and some surprise guests. The CookieNauts, a robotics team made up of older Girl Scouts, spent the morning teaching girls about robotics. The girls had the opportunity to drive robots and even try out programming.

That afternoon, the girls had the opportunity to visit three different stations to participate in some hand-on STEM activities. At the Clark Planetarium’s station, girls we able to work in pairs and program their own robot. Meganne Ferrel, a Gold Award Girl Scout and current medical student, taught girls about the circulatory system, including how to take blood pressure and pluses, basic first aid, and about reflexes in the musculoskeletal system.

At the final station, the girls had the chance to create biodegradable water bottles. Material Science Engineer and Gold Award Girl Scout Alum Amber Barron taught the girls how to create their own plant-based water bottle.

Lessons That Last a Lifetime In the 2019 Girl Scout Cookie Season, Girls Think Outside the Cookie Box Sure, they’re delicious, but beyond the sweetness, Girl Scout Cookies are an opportunity for girls to do extraordinary things! Girl Scouts in Utah had another incredible season and got an important taste of what it takes to be successful - teamwork, planning, and a positive outlook (for starters).

Thank you all for another great Cookie Season! This year, over 4,200 girls in Utah learned lifelong skills like goal setting, decision making, and money management, by participating in the Girl Scout Cookie Program. Each package of cookies supports girls’ goals and adventures, and all of the proceeds stay local! Thanks to a successful Cookie Season, these girls are able to fund their Girl Scouts adventures like camp and service projects.

Proceeds from all cookie purchases stay local and help power new experiences for every awesome G.I.R.L. (Go-getter, Innovator, Risk-taker, Leader) who sells Girl Scout Cookies! Whether it’s a trip she’ll never forget; a science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) activity that opens her mind to a whole new world of possibilities; a service project that will change her community forever; or the opportunity to build a lifetime of memories at camp, Girl Scout Cookies make it all happen! Selling cookies also teaches girls essential skills they can use to be successful today and in the future—it’s a sweet deal.

Beyond that, when girl success is supported through the Girl Scout Cookie Program, we narrow the female entrepreneurship gap by nurturing that gogetter spirit early on and equipping girls with the confidence and know-how to set and achieve their goals!
