This October, 50 high school and college-age Girl Scouts and young alums joined 400 business and community leaders to celebrate Girl Scouts of Utah’s second annual Utah Day of the Girl at the Salt Lake City Marriott Downtown at City Creek.

Held to coincide with the International Day of the Girl, this celebratory day was presented by Dominion Energy and recognized the power and potential of girls in Utah. We also honored four Girl Champions, leaders in each of our four pillars: STEM, Entrepreneurship, Life Skills, and Outdoors.

Our 2019 Girl Champion honorees were: STEM — Deepika de Silva, BioFire Diagnostics, LLC Life Skills — Dr. Susan R. Madsen, Utah Valley University Outdoors — Heidi Redd, Dugout Ranch, Indian Creek Cattle Company Entrepreneurship — Ali Hynek, Nena & Co. Guests also heard an inspiring story of perseverance and making your own choices from special guest, President and CEO of Utah Food Bank, Ginette Bott.

The event was as much about recognizing current girl successes as it was providing a mentorship opportunity for Girl Scouts. Girls who attended the event had the opportunity to sit and network with a table of women and men from various industries and learn about potential career paths.

Utah Day of the Girl provided an inspirational and powerful message about Girl Scouts and our impact on young women in Utah! Next year, Utah Day of the Girl will take place during Girl Scouts of Utah’s centennial, sure to be an exceptionally exciting and memorable event. This year, we recognized 10 incredible girls who earned their Girl Scout Gold Award, the highest award a Girl Scout Senior or Ambassador can earn. The Girl Scout Gold Award is the mark of the truly remarkable—proof that not only can she make a difference, but that she already has.

Seniors and Ambassadors who earn the Gold Award tackle issues that are dear to them and drive lasting change in their communities and beyond. Gold Award Girl Scouts don’t just change the world for the better, they change it for good.

Amelia created an initiative to encourage low-income kids and families to eat healthy. She collected and distributed food to more than 70 families in Midvale. She also made an online website with downloadable PDFs, a place for people to donate and get involved, and healthy recipes in English and Spanish.

Ashley felt compelled to call attention to emergency preparedness in her own community. She visited the local junior high school and community events to talk about natural disasters, being prepared, and the importance of 72-hour kits.

Bella wanted to use literacy to ease the struggles that women and their children go through while they’re in recovery from substance abuse.

She built two libraries in a Volunteers of America recovery facility for women and children and collected over 2,500 books from the community.

Fatima realized she might be the only person in the world to hear her grandmother’s powerful stories, so she decided to create a documentary called Reviving Heritage to preserve culture, language, and heritage that might have otherwise been lost.

Kaylan noticed that many students didn’t know about basic kitchen safety. She created an extensive and interactive kitchen safety website with lesson plans, videos, in-class activities, review games, assessments, take-home activities, and recipes.

Ruth created the Hearing Aid Awareness project after her own experience with untreated hearing loss. She presented her project to staff at assisted living homes and made online videos to share with the public about untreated hearing loss, how to care for hearing aids, and how to help hearing aid users.

Sam fulfilled a huge need for the National Ability Center, a non-profit that helps people with disabilities participate in recreational activities.

She created a sensory cart, which is a portable version of a sensory room, filled with the best activities to engage and refine people’s senses.

Savannah was shocked by the traffic violations made against school busses, even when their red lights are flashing and stops signs are extended. She set up a website with information about the issue and brought her concerns to school transportation officials and members of the state government.

Sophia started an annual test-prep book drive to make sure all the students at her school had access to the information and study materials they need to prepare for college. She used this as an opportunity to eliminate unnecessary waste and provide more books for her library to help students in need.

Tara noticed that many girls’ voices were not being heard on their STEM teams, which caused them to lose confidence in their abilities to succeed. She designed and created core values boxes for STEM teams that are filled with activities that encourage teamwork.

On November 9, 2019, Girl Scouts of Utah held our annual Recognition of Excellence award ceremony and luncheon, where we celebrated 10 Gold Award Girl Scouts, 58 Silver Award Girl Scouts, and 180 Bronze Award Girl Scouts. We also recognized three families and 37 dedicated volunteers, all examples of incredible role models and leaders who support girls throughout our state.

Each of these girls and volunteers have shown dedication to making their communities and their world a better place, and we are excited to see what they will do next!

On August 16 and 17, over 100 Women joined us at Camp Cloud Rim to experience Girl Scouts of Utah camp with a grown-up, “glamping” flare at our annual Camping for a Cause fundraising event.

Guests were greeted on Friday with a sparkling welcome and a beautiful view of Lake Brimhall tucked into the mountains above Park City.

That evening, we celebrated the highlights of our program and the impact Girl Scouts of Utah has made for girls across the state. Our guests joined us for a silent auction before hitting the dance floor, watching a movie under the stars,

and topping off the night with one of the best Girl Scouts traditions, s’mores by the fire.

On Saturday, everyone had the chance to participate in classic camp activities and signature Camping for a Cause adventures.

Guests curated their own perfect days at camp, from fly-fishing lessons, stand-up paddle boarding, and picturesque hikes to outdoor yoga, guided painting, and flower arranging.
