Business tycoon J. Mack Robinson died on Friday, Feb. 7 at the age of 90. In 1998, Robinson donated $10 million to the business school at Georgia State, and the school was named after him.

Continued strife in Syria

BBC America reported that more than 600 people in Syria have been evacuated from a government besieged Old Quarter in the city of Homs. Governor Talal al-Barazi has said that there is a possibility of extending ceasefire to allow citizens to leave the city after recent events. The UN and Syrian Red Cross Crescent delivered relief supplies to those affected by the ongoing events.

On Saturday, there were also aid workers that were trapped under fire for many hours.

Responding to a safety check, a Georgia State police officer found an impaired student. After an evaluation by Grady EMT, he was later transferred to the hospital. Additionally, a second individual was cited and escorted off campus grounds.

A Georgia State student under the legal drinking age was arrested for alcohol possession and disorderly conduct. Responding to a disturbance call, officers found the intoxicated student and issued a citation.

In a case that proves the under-appreciated value of shirts, a student left his wallet, phone and shirt unattended on a bleacher to play basketball. When he returned, he discovered his items were missing.

Atlanta ranks 14 as major sex trafficking hub By the numbers

n January 1, 1863, President Abraham Lincoln abolished slavery in the United States with the Emancipation Proclamation.

More than 150 years have passed since that day, and organizations like the END IT Movement (EIM) are still trying to eliminate modern-day forms of slavery in Atlanta and in cities worldwide.

Human trafficking is the terminology used today to describe modern-day slavery. According to the U.S Department of Health & Human Services (HHS), human trafficking exists in two basic forms: labor trafficking and sex trafficking.

The HHS reported sex trafficking is the most common form of slavery implemented today. Every day, more people are abducted and forced to become sex slaves. The city of Atlanta is a major supplier of these slaves to interested parties.

Of the 85 cases in Georgia recorded by the National Human Trafficking Resource Center (NHTRC), 67 of the 85 cases were sex trafficking cases and most of these cases were concentrated in Atlanta.

Students at Georgia State who are inspired to take action against sex trafficking on and around their campus can join Manumission, an organization with 48 members that works to educate students about child sex

trafficking.

“Our primary goal is use different perspectives to educate students, faculty, and staff about Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children (CSEC) in Georgia,” Anh Ly, president of Manumission, said. “We host Speaker’s Series every month. In the past we welcomed State Attorney General Sam Olens, Senator Renee Unterman, Special Agent Sara Thomas from the GBI, Brandy Bazile from the Georgia Care Connection, Katrina Owens, a CSEC advocate and survivor herself, and many more.”

Atlanta is a hotspot for CSEC and the 14th largest sex trafficking city in the U.S. Ly said that Manumission’s secondary goal is to promote measures to eradicate slavery from the city of Atlanta.

Along with Manumission, the END IT Movement is an ongoing cumulative effort of ten organizations attempting to end slavery worldwide.

The movement originated on Dec. 21, 2012, and has since grown in size and influence, currently operating worldwide.

According the EIM, since 2007, an average of 17,500 people are forced into slavery around the U.S. annually.

Half of these new slaves are children.

Bryson Vogeltanz, the Chief Steward of the END IT Movement, said the first step in the movement’s mission is raising awareness for slavery worldwide.

“Awareness is the most important step in the process of this movement,”

Vogeltanz said. “Every month, we design a symbolic protest for freedom fighters to participate in. In fact, there is a symbolic protest commencing on the 27th of this month.”

According to Vogeltanz, these monthly activities are designed to raise awareness and help expedite the freeing of slaves.

While none of the organizations in the EIM are based in the city of Atlanta, representatives within the movement have many connections with non-profit organizations that are based in the metro area.

“Because the coalition is made up of 10 organizations, we cannot have a non-profit in every city,” Vogeltanz said. “That is why our number one goal is spreading awareness, and this month’s symbolic protest helps us do that. Even though our coalition has no members directly based in the city of Atlanta, anyone in any city around the world can participate in the protests.”

Each of the 10 organizations that are directly connected to the EIM serve a different role in the movement’s efforts to eradicate slavery. Together, the coalition works to educate people about human trafficking, prosecute traffickers, free and protect former slaves and prevent children from being enslaved.

One of the organizations involved is called the A21 campaign. Based primarily in Europe, this organization prosecutes individuals involved with human trafficking and also has

“All ten of the organizations are important to our efforts,”Vogeltanzsaid.

“Some of the organizations are all about raising awareness, and others are more directly involved with investigations and emancipation of slaves.”

There are still other non-profit organizations doing work within the metro-Atlanta area. One of those

non-profits is called Wellspring Living.

Created by Mary Frances Bowley in 2001, Wellspring Living has created four restoration programs in Georgia for survivors of sexual exploitation and abuse. The most recent program, Empowered Living, was established in 2012 and is designed for girls between the ages of 17 and 22 who were sex trafficking victims.

any commuter students faced hours of traffic driving home on Tuesday, Jan. 28 after President Becker decided to close Georgia State at 1 p.m. because of the snow storm. While some students disagreed with the decision to close the university so late in the day, others believed President Becker and the university handled the situation as best as possible.

In a poll conducted by The Signal, 26.6 percent of 105 randomly surveyed students gave President Becker and the University a “C” or “average” for the decisions made during the snow storm.

Out of the students who gave higher grades to the University, 14.2 percent gave an “A” or “excellent” and 17 percent gave a “B” or “good.”

“I understand why it would be frustrating because the announcement came late in the day, but for commuters with late classes, I feel they handled it well,” senior De’Luir Schaffer said.

Many of the surveyed students said that the university should have been closed for the entirety of Tuesday instead of only the second half of the day so traffic and accidents could have been avoided.

Junior Manal Mourad gave the university an “F” or “horrible” along with 20 percent of the poll participants.

“I thought the situation could have been handled differently. There [were] notices all week of snow on Tuesday. There are 40,000 students at GSU. There seemed to be absolutely no consideration on part of the university on how thousands of students could leave in an already-crowded downtown Atlanta if there was a weather emergency,” Mourad said.

convenience of closing the university in the middle of the day and the traffic problems that followed were not the University or President Becker’s fault.

“He dismissed us early, though, to get home...For the others, I feel bad, but what else could he do? Fly us all home individually?” senior Emmeline Loubeau said.

Sophomore Lauren Little felt that Georgia Southern University, along with other universities in Georgia, made the right decision by closing for the entirety of Tuesday ahead of time.

“I think that all classes on Tuesday should have been cancelled.

Most universities in Georgia had already closed, including Georgia Southern, even though they did not get any snow. Georgia State is a commuter school and should be extra cautious about weather situations.

A lot of students ended up trapped or stuck on the way home from their morning classes,” Little said.

Little gave the University a “D” or “Needs Improvement.”

President Becker releases message addressing weather safety

President Becker released a message on Friday, Jan. 31 addressing the safety concerns during the snow storm as well as thanking the faculty who stayed behind to make sure places like the dining hall were running for students and staff.

“The transportation challenges experienced by members of our Georgia State community greatly exceeded expectations. Our students, faculty and staff are to be admired for the courage, fortitude and perseverance they demonstrated as they battled and endured the elements and traffic to make their way home,” Becker said in the message.

He then announced a plan to appoint a task force to review Georgia State’s weather emergency protocols

and operations and revise them in accordance with the issues faced during the snow storm.

“We will coordinate our work, where appropriate, with city, county and state officials to make certain that our revised plans are designed to work within the larger context of the Metro Atlanta region,” Becker said.

Becker ended by extending his gratitude to Georgia State employees who stayed behind to keep residents, University Police and staff fed in the dining halls as well as the employees of the Facilities Department, who cleared sidewalks and roadways to ensure safety.

Graduate student Heather Davis admired President Becker for his communication with staff and students.

“I think President Becker did an excellent job of communicating with the university staff and students to promote safety for all those involved at GSU,” Davis said.

Other students brought up the fact that Georgia does not often experience severe weather. They felt it was only natural that the university did not have adequate safety measures in place.

“They did the best they could.

W

hen a group of students discovered that Georgia State did not offer an organization for pre-veterinary students to network in, they were shocked. They decided that a public research university with the second-largest enrollment in the state needed an organization for pre-vet students to learn more about their interests.

The Pre-Veterinary Medicine Professional Society (PVPS), the first of its kind on campus in nearly 13 years, has now been established at Georgia State.

The purpose of PVPS is to promote the interest of the field of veterinary medicine and to acquaint the members with different aspects of veterinary medicine, according to the PVPS official Facebook page.

“I joined the club because I have always wanted to be a veterinarian and anything involved or related to veterinary studies is something I wanted to be a part of,” junior biology major Elisabeth Swan said.

Swan went from being a member since the club was first established to the official event coordinator for the PVPS last semester.

Swan also said that she believes that the PVPS has made an impact on all biology majors, those who have already decided on what they want to do or are undecided.

“Most biology students are aimed towards med school, but the other people who are set on veterinary school have no idea what to expect or some of the requirements needed to get into vet school. The club has opened the doors for students to get involved with either volunteer work or apply for internships dealing with veterinarians or other animal-related work,” Swan said.

Shalin Jyotishi, who is currently attending the University of Geor-

gia, agrees that the PVPS provides a lot of opportunity for pre-vet students.

“There are lots of networking opportunities that our club has done. These types of opportunities probably may have not been as feasible at other schools,” Jyotishi said.

Some of these networking opportunities include a possible tour of Yerkes National Primate Research Center at Emory University in Lawrenceville next fall and a tour of Zoo Atlanta.

“This is really unique because of proximity in relation to Georgia State University students. Dr. Sam Rivera from the Atlanta zoo was actually one of our first speakers at the PVPS,” Jyotishi said.

The PVPS said that the group organizers have had guest speakers and volunteer activities similar to other groups on campus.

However, the group is unique because it is the only organization that performs in-lab sessions, such as animal dissections outside of a traditional college classroom.

Some of the dissected animals include squids, snakes and turtles.

“Dissecting these animals outside of the classroom is really unique, because usually it’s considered curriculum based. Not many organizations have the ability to do those things,” Jyotishi said. “We were able to do that because of Dr. Reber.”

Swan thinks the dissections provide an opportunity for students to really see if going to veterinary school is in their future.

“The fact that the PVPS does have a dissection every semester is a real eye-opener for those who may have never dissected anything, and from there they are able to see if they really want to go into vet school,” Swan said.

Jyotishi also said UGA has a vet program, but the members of the PVPS club there do not have dissections.

“UGA does not have the sections to do outside curriculumbased activities, such as dissecting animals, whereas Georgia State does. That’s pretty significant because UGA has a pre-vet program.

I think this will attract a lot of students interested in zoology, veterinary medicine, even neuroscience,”

Jyotishi said.

He further explained why he believed the PVPS was innovative in its approach to reach out to students.

“We want to build this community and have this unity,” he said.

Jyotishi also said that the PVPS is doing is doing more than just focusing on pre-vet students.

“I’d really like to convey the message of ‘Don’t always rely on President Becker or your professors for all of your academic enrichment.’ Students should come up with innovative ideas on their own,” Jyotishi said. “Google was created by two doctoral students at Stanford. It’s how Zuckerburg created Facebook at Harvard.”

He advised students to utilize the resources available to them on campus.

“That’s what I’d like the PVPS to represent. Our dissections, the fact that we’re the first pre-vet group to grace the campus in over a decade despite our enrollment and the enrollment of STEM majors.

The point should be that students should build their campus and their experience,” Jyotishi said.

Sustainability office ready to serve

W

alking along the busy streets of Atlanta, it is easy to get caught up in the hustle of downtown.

Most of Georgia State’s community travels through this urban setting without thinking about the impact they have on Atlanta’s environment, and it is easy to miss simple opportunities to make a green difference.

The new Office of Sustainability aims to engage and educate the Georgia State community to unite and Go Green.

After five years of monthly meetings at Waffle House, Georgia State’s sustainability program now has an office.

In 2009, Georgia State professors Dr. Michael Black, who teaches neuroscience, and Dr. Dabney Dixon, who teaches chemistry, began meeting with faculty and staff to discuss ideas about increasing sustainability on the Georgia State campus.

These professors are members of the University Senate Sustainability Committee, which is the representative of all matters sustainability to the University Senate.

The group noticed that there was a growing interest within the Georgia State community to learn about more opportunities to make greener choices on campus.

The University Senate Sustainability Committee, along with the support of faculty and staff members, was able to bring the Office of Sustainability to campus through the implementation of the green fee.

With the Office of Sustainability now in place, Jennifer Asman, Program Coordinator for the Office of Sustainability, has established goals in order to inform Georgia State students of new opportunities.

“Creating a culture of sustainability on campus is my biggest goal for Georgia State,” Asman said. “We want to do that through awareness campaigns, student engagement and introducing sustainability into the curriculum.”

Asman said that she plans on talking with faculty, students and administrators in order to figure out ways to spread awareness of campus activities, like their curriculum workshops and lectures that are held throughout the semester.

Some of the goals the Office of Sustainability is working toward accomplishing are getting safer bicycle and pedestrian pathways downtown, working with dining services to cut down post-consumer food waste and working with facilities to decide how to benchmark current energy use.

“Working in a downtown, urban setting forces us to be creative to bring sustainability to campus, and I like that,” Asman said.

Not only will the Office of Sustainability need to address the issues Georgia State has with being sustainable but it will also need to do so within the confines of Atlanta.

Georgia State’s buildings and community are integrated with the city, which means that urban factors, such as tourism and traffic, impact Georgia State’s ability to implement sustainability plans, whereas other college campuses are faced with issues that can be directly dealt with through the university system.

ready started to bring more sustainable resources to campus and is looking forward to impacting Atlanta as well.

“A public institution of higher learning as large as ours definitely needs to be involved in local and global discussions over how to live a lifestyle and design infrastructures in ways that are less destructive and more sustainable so that we are not living at the expense of others – others alive now and future generations of species,” Dr. Carrie Packwood Freeman, leader of the Sustainable Energy Tribe, said.

On Jan. 8, the office announced plans to use technical assistance from the Atlanta Regional Commission’s Community Choices Program to provide a campus-wide bicycle plan. The project will start this month.

The Sustainability Office also announced on its Facebook page that Georgia State is introducing a new Sustainability Library. The library is in the beginning phase of ordering books and all of these resources will be available to the entire campus community.

An interactive campus sustainability map will also be coming to Georgia State soon because of efforts by geology professor Dr. Tim Hawthorne, a supporter of the Office of Sustainability.

Some students are glad to see more opportunities arise to go green on campus because they believe that the environment is something that Georgia State should protect.

“I think all campuses should go greener. We are such a big influence on the community around us, and I think it would be better if we focused on being more friendly to the environment,” Chariss Newsom, a junior geology major, said.

Justice Cooper, a sophomore marketing major, agrees.

“I think finding ways to be green is always a plus because we can do that in so many ways. All you need is to look at the trash cans to see how many plastic bottles are in there. All we need is one recycling bin to help the Earth,” Cooper said.

Asman noticed the amount of enthusiasm to go green among Georgia State students and is focused on enabling college students’ drive to live sustainable lives.

“I see college campuses as being the perfect opportunity to teach people to live sustainably. Students are at the perfect age to take that with them for the rest of their lives. They can also take that out to their communities when they leave,” Asman said.

Some students who are passionate to learn more about creating sustainable communities started making a difference within the Georgia State community before the creation of the Office of Sustainability.

These campus groups are the Atlanta Herpetology Club, Environmental Law Society, GSU Bikes, University

Housing Living Green Community and the Sustainable Energy Tribe.

Students who are involved in various Go Green student organizations are dedicated to the same mission as Asman. The Office of Sustainability will be able to represent these organizations and use them to help engage more of the student population.

“The Office of Sustainability will provide more administrative and leadership help to get programs off the ground and help fund them, also offering stability over time as students graduate. As an all-volunteer group, the Sustainable Energy Tribe primarily runs on the energy of students, and I’m hoping the group can now achieve an even higher profile on campus and interest more students in the importance of helping the campus go green,” Dr. Packwood Freeman, leader of the Sustainable Energy Tribe, said.

There are plenty of ways to help support Georgia State’s mission to go green even if you are not involved in a student organization.

One opportunity is to support The Office of Sustainability’s decision to work on getting Georgia State to become a National Tree Campus.

The Arbor Day Foundation focuses on encouraging and enabling communities to plant and sustain trees and Tree Campus USA is one of their programs that is aimed toward college students and faculty.

Through designating days to gather communities together, National Tree Campus teaches students how to plant trees and then gives them the opportunity to plant trees in small groups throughout the surrounding area.

Utilities and weather issues delay streetcar ALEX KUGACZEWSKI Senior Reporter

A

fter years of planning and development, the Atlanta Streetcar is in its final stages and is expected to be completed by mid-to-late April 2014.

According to Sharon Gavin, communications director for the Streetcar Project, the last stage of major roadwork is currently taking place at Peachtree Street, Auburn Avenue and Park Place.

“We are 90 percent complete with construction. Work on the Peachtree and Aderhold area is the last major piece of construction work to be done,” Gavin said.

Since its inception, the Atlanta

Streetcar Project (ASCP) has undergone multiple postponements from projected project deadlines. Previously, the Streetcar was expected to be operational by the second week of January.

“Weather delays have been an issue, but the unexpected has been the biggest setback. But unexpected utilities issues, such as unmapped gaslines and water pipes, would be dug up,” Gavin said.

An update on the ASCP’s official website recommends that drivers who would normally utilize those roads take Forsyth Street as an alternative, noting that Broad Street is accessible only to local traffic.

While the ASCP is currently designed to offer missing transit links to currently operating public trans-

portation services in the downtown area, future expansions of the ASCP are expected to offer connectivity to the Atlanta BeltLine as well.

“It’s part of the Connect Atlanta Plan. The goal is to connect all public transportation to create an interconnected Atlanta,” Gavin said.

Gavin said she expects the project to be a future economic driver and provide the means for Atlanta residents to travel downtown without using their own vehicles. Even so, the project hasn’t received universal praise.

The ASCP has previously received criticism from local business owners who claimed that construction has been a hindrance to their everyday operations.

Matthew Nelson, owner of Man-

gos Caribbean Restaurant on Auburn Avenue, said that he has taken out a total of $40,000 in loans to compensate for declining business.

Nelson says that while the overall situation has improved, normalcy is still a ways off.

“Things have improved because construction in front of my store is out of the way, but construction on Peachtree Street and Auburn Avenue is still a problem,” Nelson said.

Those without large financial burdens have expressed their concerns as well. Many students have taken issue with the construction’s interference with their ability to move around campus.

Sophomore Jessica Dias said that the project has considerably impacted her ability to commute.

“It really does affect my travel time so I’m glad that it’s almost done,” Dias said.

Despite the current and past inconveniences to local residents, the project’s architects said they expect the end result to yield remarkable economic growth in the years to come.

Tim Borchers, executive director of the ASCP, said that he acknowledges the issues that the project has caused to local residents but firmly believes that the economic benefits of the project will outweigh any current inconveniences faced by business owners and commuters.

“We’re already seeing plans for commercial and residential development around the streetcar,” Borchers said.

irgins are becoming a minority in the commercial world, and virginity has become taboo – almost something one should be ashamed of, as portrayed in the film “The 40 Year Old Virgin.”

This is because sex sells; therefore, pop culture gives people what they want. With all the added pressure from friends, significant others and society, it can be difficult to even consider not having sex. But at the age of fifteen, I made the radical decision of choosing to remain abstinent until marriage.

It’s not because I don’t want to disappoint my parents, it’s not because of religion and I’m not asexual. I decided to stay a virgin because of something my boyfriend calls “The Disney Causation Factor.” When I was a child, I grew up watching the classic Disney princess films, which instilled in me a sense of hopeless romanticism. As I aged, the romantic in me leaked its way into the more carnal aspects of my life.

For me, sex is something that is beautiful and precious. It is the purest, most intimate kind of love that you can share with someone. To give that to somebody is the greatest gift you can give and I want to save it for my one true love who, in my case, is going to be the man I’ll marry.

Not everyone shares this “Disney Causation Factor,” but no matter how you look at sex – and there are so many different ways to look at it – you should be comfortable with your sex partner. It should be a meeting of the minds just as much as it is a meeting of the body.

Waiting to have sex allows you to reach a certain level of mental and emotional intimacy before you take that irrevocable step. Often, in a relationship, you get so wrapped up in the physical chemistry that you lose sight of other aspects that are just as important – if not even more so – than sexual compatibility.

This past August, I was lucky enough to meet someone who appreciated my angle on the matter.

Jason and I met at DragonCon, an event where flirting with and even sleeping with random strangers is an acceptable part of the adult culture. Our eyes met from across the crowded room, and we shared one of those ridiculously corny fairy tale moments.

He spent the whole day hanging out with me and my friends, and we got to know each other a bit.

That evening, I felt the need to make sure he knew I wasn’t going to become physically intimate with him, no matter what everyone else’s decisions were.

I was impressed when he took my explanation like a gentleman, but didn’t expect to hear back from him after that night since he was 27. I assumed a man of that age would want to find someone who would have sex with him.

When he remained in touch, calling me every day and sending me text messages to say good morning, I was pleased and we slowly grew closer.

In October, we decided to try a relationship, and again I reminded him about my abstinence-untilmarriage position.

He told me that because he was 27, he had sown his wild oats and wanted a more serious relationship, something that had the potential to become permanent. I was thrilled to finally have found someone understanding enough to respect my values.

Now, we’re hopefully looking at marriage five years down the road. Just the other night on the phone, when he cheerfully mentioned “five years to go,” I assumed he was talking about getting married.

When I asked him what he meant, he explained that there were five years of his abstaining from having sex. His explanation: “Why would I want to have sex with anyone but you? You’re not sleeping with anyone, so what would make it okay for me not to give you the same courtesy?”

The desire for sex is fantastic and natural, and despite the focus on concepts such as purity, having sex does not make you “impure.” It’s all just a matter of preference. Waiting to have sex for the first time does not make you a “good” person, nor does having sex make you a “bad” person.

I am not a saint, and I make no claim to being perfect. The hardest part has always been resisting the temptation to give in, because being intimate does feel good.

I’ve been through my share of heartbreak over my decision, and it’s not always easy to stay true.

I’ve dealt with men giving me ultimatums and friends trying to convince me, but I’ve managed to hold strong on my decision. Very often, their arguments are logical, tempting or sometimes just so irritating that I’m ready to give up on chastity all together. There can be a lot of doubt involved. However, I have to ask myself if it’s really worth it to ruin the romance of that experience in order to give into my physical craving desire and bring everything into perspective.

When you finally find the person who is willing to wait with you and respect your wishes, it is one of the sweetest feelings there is. Only when someone accepts you for who you are – no questions asked – is when they deserve to have this level of intimacy.

In the end, it’s a personal choice and is all about what’s right for you as an individual. You have to take the time to sit down and analyze yourself to determine which path is the one that best fits you, whether it’s abstinence or seeing your body as a temple fit to be worshipped and caressed by all who wish.

There is no single right path, and both sides come with their own problems. While society and vehicles like the media work to perpetuate sex, you do have a choice. I made my choice five years ago and am proud to have kept up my end of the promise.

So I think it’s a very important discussion that every couple should have. I’m not promoting virginity nor am I demoting the concept of “having sex before marriage.” I’m just saying it all depends on who you are.

Does the idea of a laid-back relationship based on material things interest you? If so, you may be interested in the popular sugar daddy scene in Atlanta.

Chauntel Toomer, a senior at Georgia State, says that having a guy to buy her clothes and pedicures is nothing out of the ordinary.

On what she sees in her sugar daddy, she said, “I don’t see our friendship going any further than just friends, but if he wants to spend money on me, I’m not going to turn it down.”

This seems to be ideal for many girls­—the idea of free things with little to no relationship investment is very appealing. In the modern hookup culture, it is hardly taboo to have a sugar daddy, if not even respected in some social circles. The sugar daddy culture in Atlanta is what I believe to be an untapped market with huge potential returns.

The dating website SeekingArrangement.com conducted a recent survey on sugar daddies in Atlanta and reported that in 2013, the average sugar daddy was 39 years old and spent over $60,000 on various girls. Retail stores should embrace sugar daddies in their stores through promotions and advertising. Things like discounted spa treatment packages, clothing sales targeted at this audience and even special services to make sure the sugar daddy shopping sprees go off without a hitch (and by hitch I’m talking about marriage).

A reported 33 percent of sugar daddies in Atlanta are already married. I’m not condoning infidelity, but the numbers don’t lie. Businesses should embrace these scandalous relationships and turn this sweet opportunity into a profit.

Education is the first step in addressing the college sexual assault crisis

S

exual assault is an epidemic on college campuses, and no campus—including Georgia State—is exempt.

Last year, the reported cases of sexual assault at Georgia State doubled from 2012 to eight cases. Yet, according to the Department of Justice, one in five college women will experience rape or attempted rape while attending university, and more than half of the victims of rape do not tell anyone about their experiences, much less report their assailant.

The problem has become so bad President Barack Obama recently created a special federal task force designed to reduce incidents of campus sexual assault. And that’s a good start.

But change has to start locally if we’re going to take this problem seriously, and Georgia State has not only the ability but also the responsibility to do something, however difficult it may be to address the underlying problems of our society that contribute to a culture that allows rape and sexual assault to fester in college.

Certainly the first step in making headway on this important issue is recognizing that it is a problem, and that’s where we think Georgia State can do more to become part of the solution to this crisis.

Currently, Georgia State has a Freshman Learning Community (FLC) program that incorporates several modules to help ease new students’ transition into college.

sexual assault prevention, entitled “Sex Signals,” which takes the form of a live-action performance.

But here’s the problem with “Sex Signals:” It’s only a recommended module for the course, there are limited spaces available for the performance itself and it is up to the 1010 professor’s discretion to determine if it’s even par for the course.

Many GSU 1010 students will not even take this module, meaning that unless a freshman student is studying upper level sociology or psychology courses, they won’t be learning about sexual assault. This makes it problematic in taking strides to prevent both reported and unreported incidents.

To its credit, the University has the right idea with including this module. But the status quo is not enough.

Rather, we believe an academic, credit-based sexual assault course should be required for each student to graduate. In order to be a successful program, the course would need to be discussion-based, incorporate multimedia and speakers into its curriculum, and be taught by qualified professors in departments like psychology and sociology.

There are specific techniques students can learn from a sexual assault class, such as bystander techniques. Bystander techniques, currently being utilized at schools like Harvard University, teach students ways to prevent sexual assault by stepping directly into a potential situation and taking strides to prevent assault.

And where are students applying these techniques?

College parties, of course.

The DOJ says that 43 percent of college sexual victimization incidents involve alcohol consumption by victims, and 69 percent involve alcohol consumption by the perpetrators. Alcohol is clearly a key player in incidences of sexual assault on campus, and learning about this truth may help our students make wiser choices the next time they’re presented with at-risk environments.

We understand that many students might resent having to take a course like this to graduate. Maybe a weekly course seems like too much in addition to everything students already have on their plates. But the importance of teaching students to understand the magnitude of sexual assault directly affects their futures.

Sexual assault does not stop after the class ends, or even after graduation. Partner abuse, workplaces ripe with the threat of assault and a society that promotes rape culture await us all after we gain our degrees.

Sure, the University could simply implement a single session into its sexual assault curriculum like other schools have, but that would not carry the same weight as a course totally designed to handle this epidemic.

Though the University cannot prevent future occurrences of sexual assault directly, it can certainly give new students the tools to become ambassadors of social change after graduation. Just as we are supplied with the tools to hopefully be successful in our careers, we must have the tools to collectively address this growing crisis.

More than a hookup app?

One couple found love through the popular networking app Tinder

o outsiders, there was nothing atypical about the way Haley and Antonio met and began

dating.

When Haley, 21, took her new 29-year-old boyfriend to meet her parents, they talked about how they met while Antonio was on campus doing recruitment for his job. The two then communicated via cell phone for more than a month before going on a first date at P’cheen in Virginia Highlands.

They hit it off instantly.

But Haley told her parents a lie. She didn’t meet her boyfriend on campus; they met on Tinder.

Although it was originally released in 2012, the phone application didn’t become popular amongst young adults until 2013.

Many users may not have used a traditional dating website. Tinder pulls information from the users’ Facebook profile and allows them to match up with men, women or both within up to a 100-mile radius of their location.

Users are able to add photos and a biography to their profile, and they can see the Facebook interests and contacts they have in common with each potential match. The only other information provided is the user’s first name, age and their distance in reference to each potential match.

The app is set up like a simple game. If you see someone you like, swipe right. If you don’t like what you see, swipe left. If the users both swipe right on each other, Tinder will alert them and they will be able to privately message each other and communicate within the app or “keep playing” and search for other potential

matches. The application can be used as a means of socializing, finding convenient hookups or, in cases like Haley and Antonio’s, finding a significant other.

Haley said she decided to download the app after reading comments and reviews online.

“I’m really into apps and technology, and I was reading reviews on it and I said, ‘Let me see what this is,’ because there were crazy stories behind Tinder and how it grew really quickly within a year.”

Haley said things went smoothly from the beginning with Antonio. She said they did not have mutual Facebook friends and the only mutual Facebook interest they had was the Bible.

“We just hit it off right away.

It was almost as if you text somebody after meeting them at a party or meeting them face to face. It was just normal, natural chemistry,” Haley said.

She told someone when she went on her first date with Antonio, just in case anything went wrong, but the night ended up going smoothly.

“It was more like getting to know each other outside of what we had already talked about. At that point it was a normal date,” she said.

Haley said she thinks taking a month to talk within the app is what helped her relationship.

“With Tinder, it can go really

fast. I know a lot of people use it to hook up a lot, so I feel like if it was really quick then it would’ve just been a hook up thing instead of progression,” Haley said.

Haley’s first date with Antonio was actually her second date with someone she’d met on Tinder.

“He hadn’t gone on other dates with the app and I had. I went on one other [date] and it was just terrible,” Haley said.

Haley didn’t initially take the app too seriously and she continued to talk to other people prior to meeting Antonio in person.

She no longer uses the app, but she still has it on her phone.

Now she and her boyfriend don’t even mention the app that brought them together.

“We don’t talk about Tinder at all. It’s not even a thing anymore.

We don’t bring it up. That was our intro. That was our bar,” Haley said.

Haley said people usually don’t ask where she met her boyfriend, but she didn’t feel comfortable telling her parents the truth when they met Antonio for the first time.

“I made up a story because I was like, they won’t get it and they would just automatically go with the stigma. They’ve seen too many news stories and negative reviews on it.”

She said if the relationship lasts then she will eventually tell

Despite the fact that many Georgia State users can be found on Tinder, the ones contacted for this article all declined to speak about their use of the app. In fact, Haley only agreed to be interviewed if her and her boyfriend’s names could be changed.

Despite the fact that everything is going digital now, Haley said there is still a stigma attached to meeting someone online.

“I think that’s mostly because we favor interpersonal communication. You’re supposed to meet peo-

ple at the club or through friends or you’re supposed to know them personally...the Internet is always supposedly sketchy. I think it will go away as we use technology more and more.”

f by any chance this Valentine’s week you find yourself in a perfectly enjoyable relationship with another human being or two, and all things so far range somewhere between “enjoyably tolerable” and “freaking rainbows, man,” then feel free to completely ignore everything here. If though, you ARE in a relationship that you suspect has been on the rocks for some time (or just happen to be a single sociopath who enjoys the snickering at unhappy couples as a welcome break from putting up with the annoyingly happy ones), then by all means read on. I may not be the expert on the whole “relationship” thing, but what I do have is an almost encyclopedic knowledge of terrible romantic comedies and the free time to dissect them thoroughly, which in hindsight might explain a lot more than I’m comfortable admitting. So with that being said, if your relationship lacks that and even hints at rambling any of the following films, consider this your early warning system. It’ll get worse before it gets MUCH worse.

“Failure To Launch”(2006) Hypothetical scenario #1:“He’s perfect! He’s charming! He lives with his parents. Which is kinda odd for a guy in his late 20s. And would be maybe a little less odd if he wasn’t so damn insistent upon not showing any incentive. But he has potential! And it’s not like he’s not worth investing time, energy and heartache into. This will work out somehow like it always does right?”

Well cool your jets there and congratulate yourself for stumbling into the plot of….

The movie solution: Sarah Jessica Parker finds out that deep down, Matthew McConaughey isn’t an emotionally unavailable loser who’s draining her time and energy out of an interest in constantly having a babysitter so he doesn’t have to take responsibility for his own damn life.

No! It turns out he’s actually emotionally devastated because of his fiance’s untimely passing thanks to a freak accident that for some reason she just found out about!

This means that he’s still a great guy with nothing to fix. Turns out she was the one in need of fixing all along. They presumably marry and live happily every after, continuing the cycle of mooching off of Matthew’s parents.

Your solution: Seriously, go back up there and read that bloc of what the fuckery and ask yourself what the odds are that a loser who refuses to get a job, have any interests or have anything special about him besides being available has a conveniently packaged excuse like that?

Even HE’d be surprised that you fell for it and being constantly surprised by obvious things is kinda his shtick. The best part about this prospect is that leaving is a simple matter of unfriending him on Facebook. The odds you run into him in the real world are, again, quite slim.

“(500) Days Of Summer”(2009) Hypothetical scenario #2:“Oh man, she’s the best! She has a smile that lights up the world, a song in her heart that makes bluebirds sing and yes she’s also currently @#$%ing me.

All is awesome in my world!

‘Cept of course, I get the feeling I don’t really know who she is...which is a weird thing to say for someone you’ve been dating for a few months now. Can’t remember if she’s said a word about her family or interests or anything that would make her resemble a plausible human being. But then, you know, she’s @#$%ing me and all sooo...maybe this is working?”

I think not, good sir! Reassess your priorities and the said sack you’ve become, for aside from the tried manicpixie-dream-girl archetype, you’ve also fallen for...

The movie solution: Near as I can tell, Joseph Gordon-Levitt realizes that outside of being an impossibly good looking man, he has little going for him and deep down hasn’t a clue what true love is. Rather, he simply falls for the first vaguely artsy girl who appreciates his quiet brooding.

Zooey Deschanel realizes she’s a terrible one-note actress. And, in the case of the movie, also an awful person. The plot works itself out nicely by Joseph finding some new wide-eyed pixie to take Zooey’s spot, while Zooey finds some poor schmuck to marry her. No one learns anything and box office records are smashed that year.

Your solution: Good news and bad news: Good news is that, in the real world, a couple like that would totally end up getting married. The bad news is that it would ultimately end either by falling into a bitter, loveless marriage or a bitter, hateful divorce.

If you’re the Joseph in this equation here, maybe give this true love thing a break for a bit; there’s nothing wrong with flings and calling them just that. Work on you and maybe don’t feel the need to fill your life with an impossible, fantasy caricature. If you’re the Zooey in question, try not flirting with guys when you’re engaged. Seems simple enough.

“I Now Pronounce You Chuck And Larry”(2007) Hypothetical scenario #3: “Well, it’s not really a romance problem per say. See, I hatched this little tax evasion scam with a friend of mine and it went a little like, ‘Hey! What if we pretend to be gay and got married!’”

Haha. Oh, you awful awful human being, you. If you find yourself in this particular scenario, take comfort in knowing that what was made available for repeat viewings in whatever you imagine hell would be in…

The movie solution: Turning out to be straight the whole time, cashing in on a slew of awful jokes about gay people and avoiding taking the rap for any sort of charges of fraud by ripping off the ending of “Spartacus?” Just an easy weekend for Adam Sandler and KevinI’m-sorry-I’m-not-nearly-as-loveable-as-Chris-Farley-James.

Your solution: Really? I floated this one as a hypothetical, but if you’re even in the same zip code as this plot, stop existing. Right now. On the plus side, you’ll be no doubt pleased to know that in the far-flung future of 2014, not only is gay marriage now legal in 17 states and counting, but all sexualites alike are free to forget about “I Now Pronounce You Chuck And Larry.”

“50 First Dates”(2004) Hypothetical Scenario #4:“So I’m dating this girl, okay? And she’s awesome. Bright, funny, laughs at my jokes, all around great gal. ‘Cept the weirdest thing...she keeps laughing at the same joke, like every day. And she also acts like she’s never meet me, like every day.

And she keeps forgetting my name, like every day and...”

Holy shit! Hold the phone! Are you seriously telling me you found yourself in the plot of…

The movie solution: Oh wow, we’re really doing this, huh? Well in the movie it seems that the impossibly professional marine biologist Adam Sandler finds a way to make it work with Drew Barrymore’s selective brand of amnesia by... recording a tape of one day in her life and playing it back to her to start each and every morning so she can relive the horror of not only being unable to remember yesterday but also having to remember the fact that she’s married to Adam Sandler.

Your solution: Realize that there really is no way to come out of this remotely clean if you get involved, and that what Adam Sandler is doing is technically taking advantage of a person’s disability.

Seriously, am I the only who finds this movie’s premise ridiculously disturbing?

He marries the one girl who will never remember if he’s awful, and relocates her away from society thousands of miles away to live with him trapped on a boat.

The soundtrack is nice, though.

oming out this Valentine’s Day, “Endless Love” stars Alex Pettyfer and Gabriella Wilde in a story about young love. It is the second adapation of Scott Spencer’s novel of the same name, the first being the 1981 film starring Brooke Shields.

Pettyfer stars as David Axelrod, a recent high school graduate and mechanic’s son with a checkered past. Axel-

rod is secretly and madly in love with Wilde’s character, Jade Butterfield. When they meet and he pursues her, they form a passionate relationship to the dismay of Jade’s father.

Right before Pettyfer’s meet and greet in Phipps Plaza and the screening of “Endless Love,” The Signal got the opportunity to talk about the film.

would have a day off, I’d either sleep or go to Six Flags. I love Six Flags. So I didn’t get a chance to experience it; we filmed in all over the place, though. You should recognize some places in the film.

Q: How does this movie compare to the 1981 version?

A:

Our movie is very different from the original. The original has a lust vibe to it, more than love. Jade’s relationship with David is more of an addiction. The subject matter was very controversial in the 80s where ours is much more lighthearted.

Q: How was it filming Music Midtown?

A:

It was very cool. I started a mudslide. I’m very proud of it. Some of the bands were great, some I couldn’t hear. It was raining so hard, that the sound was a bit off. My favorite song at the time was “Radioactive” by Imagine Dragons, so I snuck off to go hear them. It was a fun day.

Q: What do you think makes “Endless Love” feel like a real relationship? Do you think the audience will relate?

A: I

think because it touches on real subjects. When you’re 17 or 18, the other person is the only thing that matters to you. The obstacles that come in the way for Jade and David are family and school, etc., things that don’t feel like a stretch for their relationship.

A

fter the incredible, unprecedented success of female quartet Warpaint’s full-length debut, “The Fool,” back in 2010, expectations were ratcheted up to high heavens for their next album.

To say it was anticipated would be an understatement. The LA outfit had seemingly broken onto the scene out of nowhere with an intoxicating, seductive mix of stripped down psych rock with light, experimental melodies and ethereal vocals. The odds of stumbling upon that same formula again and then somehow evolving it were always a long shot; especially considering how effortlessly great “The Fool” just seemed to sound with every listen.

But Warpaint took its rapid success to heart and after touring non-stop for four years in support of the album, long after most blogs had hopefully dismissed them as one great album wonders, rumors of a new self-titled sophomore effort finally bubbled up.

And now here we are, with perhaps the worst response possible to new music; little that could be definitively called better, but then nothing that could be called definitively worse. If anything, indefinite would be the perfect word to sum up “Warpaint,” which took a chance at being much less accessible than the band was on its first album

while paradoxically trying to incorporate some faint ideas involving sexy club grooves and vaguely accessible melodies.

In a way, it’s the exact kind of approach that worked on “The Fool:” combining multiple elements that shouldn’t work into a swirling haze that somehow does. But trying to repeat that same kind of beautiful chaos on purpose leads to a much more vague, much less-memorable album.

The stellar intro (creatively titled “Intro”) at once gives you a taste of all the familiar notes the girls have gotten down to a science, married perfectly with their new dreamy electronic drone.

Stella Mozgawa’s crashing Zeppelin-esque drumming and Jenny Lee Lindberg’s deceptively complex bass lines hold down the rhythm section, while Theresa Wayman noodles away with her spidery guitar melodies, filtering down like raindrops. The energy builds and rolls right into “Keep It Healthy,” where Emily Kokal steps right back into her captain’s chair and conducts the orchestra of sounds with her haunting croon.

The gang even takes it a step further and wheels out what may be its most accessible song to date with their single “Love Is It Die.” But it’s after that great slam of an opening (that would have made for a solid EP) that things begin to get funky.

“Hi” starts off promisingly enough, giving listeners a first taste of what new toys the ladies have been experimenting with. Mozgawa’s John Bonham crash is replaced with an icy electronic drum machine that, to it’s credit, does work initially. But within a minute the problems that plague the next

half of the album become readily apparent. Simply too much is going on at once. The electronic swells and melodies become too complex and too airy with little to ground them, and Kokal’s once warm and inviting vocals become more hollow and empty with passing. “Tease” and “Disco/Verg” are perhaps the worst offenders, but the entire middle half of the album becomes a boring slog.

Warpaint’s usual MO has always been its aversion to simply telegraphing an obvious hook a mile away, opting instead to merely hint at one instead to build upon their “post punk meets psychedelic rock” rhythm section. But on “Warpaint,” ideas are far too convoluted and free-flowing to ever form a solid connection with the listener.

Thankfully, there are a few great album highlights that cap things off nicely. A marked improvement arrives with “Feeling Alright” (by far the best song on the album and the only one that stands out besides the single), and “CC” demonstrates all those lush electronic chords and keyboards used right.

By the time the last notes of the soothing piano number “Son” fades away, “Warpaint” has done enough to repair any of the damage it might have done with one too many bad ideas. But there’s little that sticks out or can be recalled.

A listen through this album is to replicate the sonic experience of falling asleep in a sunbeam and waking from a lovely, but forgettable dream.

And then, quickly realizing you wasted an entire hour you’re never getting back.

his movie feebly tells a convoluted story of three friends who vow to remain single for the sake of being able to hang out with each other. Jason (Zac Effron), Daniel (Miles Teller) and Mikey (Michael B. Jordan) soon discover that as awesome as their relationship is, there are some things your buddies can’t do for you that a woman can.

One of the first problems with this plotline is that Mikey is married. His wife wants a divorce, but he is seeking reconciliation, which definitely throws a monkey wrench into the “single forever” pact. Mikey’s marriage notwithstanding, Daniel is secretly in love with his female wing man, and Jason is so desperate to fall in love that he’s the only one who can’t see it.

Apart from the bad story line, the filmmakers don’t seem to want to acknowledge that Mikey is African-American. In and of itself, the attempt to make the movie color blind is noble. But what makes the execution of this gesture a horrendous failure is the extensive use of “black” stereotypes.

References to the enormity of Mikey’s penis abound and he even shows up to a very WASP-y party with a 40 oz.

But African-Americans are not the only affronted group: The way women are discussed and treated by our hero trio is nothing short of revolting. These guys make run-of-the-mill misogynists look like feminists.

The lack of continuity in the timeline and story arc make “Awkward” difficult to keep up

with chronologically. The editors repeatedly cut back and forth from one scene to another without giving any clear indication of how much time—if any—has elapsed.

Finally, for this to be a romantic comedy about mid-to-late 20-somethings, the jokes were just plain sophomoric. Had these lines come from the mouth of Stiffler in an “American Pie” movie, they would have been much funnier. How many jokes about genitalia, flatulence and fellatio can grown men with bona fide careers really make? Unless you’re a cartoonist for Hustler Magazine, I would venture to say very few.

When all is said and done, “That Awkward Moment” is the one spent between this film’s opening titles and ending credits.

1. “Fall in Love (Instrumental)” - J Dilla 2. “The Moment” - Kenny G No disrespect to Slum Village, the group Dilla originally produced this for, but the starry space and laid-back vibe of “Fall In Love” are best imbibed without vocals. Even though its melody is a sparse five notes that simply guides listeners into a boundless trance, it drowns out the static of the outside world and briefly turns any bedroom into an isolated, alternate dimension.

2. “Brown Sugar” - D’Angelo

Even though the lyrics of R&B legend D’Angelo’s breakthrough hit “Brown Sugar” strongly suggest an ode to cannabis, his steamy metaphors and the track’s sultry production are unabashedly carnal.

His voice is smoother than rose petals and anyone who fails to be entranced by it is basically asexual.

3. “Over The Ice” - The Field

The foundations of minimal techno artist The Field mirror everything good sex should be. His compositions slowly build with a subtle, pounding pulse that welcome additional rhythms and samples that peak to a roaring climax that gently fades away into quiet bliss.

4. “Breakfast Can Wait” - Prince

Even though Prince is eligible for an AARP membership, he still holds his title as the globe’s unofficial ambassador of sex. His latest single, “Breakfast Can Wait,” takes his love of making love to a whole new level by actually downplaying the importance of breakfast and proposing that sex may, in fact, be the most important meal of the day.

Maybe Kenny G, the golden-haired lion of elevator jazz, would be an appropriate selection if you were making love to a boozy soccer mom. But for most occasions, putting on Kenny G instantly gives the bedchambers the stale air of a dentist’s office or a shopping mall.

3. “KeKe The Adopted Tabby Cat Makes History” - Lil B

Hip-hop’s absurdly prolific cult leader Lil B is dedicated to bringing to life any nonsensical theme or notion that pops into his head. “KeKe The Adopted Tabby Cat Makes History” is perhaps his boldest move, considering there is literally nothing to the song but his beloved feline KeKe purring over a raucous beat. While this track may advance the artistic recognition of cats everywhere, it is kitty kryptonite in the bedroom.

4. “Every Rose Has Its Thorn” - Poison

Is there anything more unsexy than Bret Micheals crooning about his failed love life? I hope not.

5. “Expose Yourself To Kids” - GG Allin

GG Allin is the prince of perversion, the sultan of sickness, the deacon of disgust – you get the idea. Shock rock’s poster child had numerous singles formulated to horrify, but “Expose Yourself To Kids” is arguably his most offensive and one of the most surefire ways to brutally destroy any and all sexual tension.

t’s fairly easy to learn about attitudes towards sex in Germany—Germans are not shy about expressing them.

Free of the puritanical roots that bind Americans to more conservative attitudes towards sex, Germans view sex—generally speaking—as a healthy and fun activity between two consenting individuals. Far from being a taboo topic, sex is brought up as casually as the weather.

Instead of learning the traditional conservative attitude towards sex, German schools focus much more on education about contraceptive practices and safe sex techniques. The results are clear: The United States boasts the highest teenage pregnancy rate in the developed world despite its attempts at staunch abstinencebased sex education and legal policies against paid sex.

Here in Germany, brothels are legal, and these places aren’t limited to red light districts, either. In Mainz, Das Crazy, a local brothel, is located just a hundred feet from the entrance to the central train and bus station. Just one block over, the local strip club stands as an established part of the city just a few doors down from city hall.

At Uni Mainz, European exchange students have a reputation of being promiscuous, especially with each other. Perhaps it’s because they have enough distance between them and their respective homes to mess around and then cut and run when it’s time to bail. Perhaps it’s just the excitement of being with someone who has a different accent. Either way, European exchange students like getting laid.

As for my own sex life here in Germany, I’m a product of my American upbringing. I don’t kiss and tell.

I

hold a personal belief that I will try anything sexually. I think that you cannot figure out what really turns you on until you’ve tried many different kinks, fetishes or sexual situations. I’m not the kind of person to judge someone on their fetishes – I have a few odd ones myself. So when I met a guy I was interested in and he told me he was a furry, I was willing to give it a try.

If you aren’t sure what a furry is, it’s someone who dresses up as their “animal spirit” but retains some human characteristics, like walking on two legs and retaining human speech and facial expressions. Some furries also play these roles in the bedroom, keeping their animal costumes on while having sex.

I was excited to find out what my animal spirit was. I had ideas of grandeur about what my animal spirit could be – a tiger, an alligator, a peacock or maybe a beautiful swan!

Oh, the possibilities of my wild spirit were exciting to me. I’ve always loved dressing up in costume – something about becoming someone different from yourself has always been appealing to me.

Tom, the furry, and I were supposed to role play later that week, and I’ll admit I got busy and may have procrastinated on getting my costume together. Really, how hard could it be to find an attractive animal costume in the winter? Apparently, pretty hard.

I ended up being a beaver. Yes, this was my “animal spirit.” A beaver

–with a green ball cap. I looked like someone who should have been on the side of the road waving a sign saying, “We Buy Gold!” The costume was suffocating and itchy, and I began to sweat. This was definitely NOT what I had in mind for my elegant animal spirit. I did not feel sexy at all. I felt like...well...a beaver.

As I came out of the bathroom, Tom was waiting for me in his furry costume – a lion. I walked over to him with unease as the sweat dripped from my back to my ankle. Tom was turned on; I was terrified.

It was in this moment that I realized he was turned on by my beaver costume, and not me. I suddenly regretted the life choices that had led up to this very moment. He started humping my beaver costume like something you’d see on a National Geographic episode. The beaver costume started to chafe against my body as I stood there in a “deer-in-theheadlights” look. I stopped him and explained that this was not something I could do.

Leaving Tom disappointed in his room, I walked to my car holding my beaver head under my arm, and after I stuffed my beaver-self in my small Hyundai, I burst out laughing.

I had tried something that was very outside of my comfort zone and found that it wasn’t my thing. And really, that’s all right. My kink doesn’t have to be your kink.

s a full-time college student and recently single individual, a majority of my weekly schedule consists of studying, attending classes every day, extra curricular activities or sitting in front of a computer screen working on my own personal projects. Compared to the average (sane) adult, I do not have nearly enough time or energy to attend absolutely every social event – both on or off of campus – to meet new people.

Over the past couple of years, I’ve developed many friendships with people who I would’ve never known existed if it wasn’t for “dating” websites. The location of individuals ranges from living within the same town and state as I do to living halfway across the country and beyond. Though we all come from different backgrounds, we have exchanged ideas and that has allowed us to develop and think in new ways.

I recently met a woman from a dating website in person. Out of all of the

people I’ve spoken to and interacted with online, she is the first with whom I’ve actually had the opportunity to shake hands.

Online, there aren’t as many awkward pauses in conversation in comparison to meeting someone new (in person) without any prior interaction.

My belief in that notion only proved to be more true when I met this individual for the first time a couple weeks ago.

Before we met, we sent messages back and forth discussing everything from school to work to interests. When I shook her hand and said, “Hi, it’s finally nice to meet you,” talking came naturally. I, like many others, feel inclined or forced to keep the conversation flowing and at a constant; but in meeting her, I felt as if we had already met because we had already spoken prior.

You’re less likely to be tense looking at a computer screen at a typed message than having to look someone in

the eyes, and you also have the option to freely express yourself as the person you truly are.

However, there are instances when people don’t actually end up being who they portray themselves as online. Being “catfished” is one of the infamous concerns of those who, like myself, frequently use websites to socialize.

To avoid the possibility of being catfished, I devised a plan to ensure that the person I was talking to was actually was who she said she was.

After talking for some time via the website on which we met, I asked her if she was interested in adding me on Snapchat. This was a simple yet safe way that I could make sure that she was the same person as the one in her profile picture without having to give out my cell number.

After a couple of days of using the mobile app, I felt I could trust her enough to move to Skyping. I wanted to observe how she would interact

with me, as there was a constant flow of communication—something threeto-five second pictures and videos couldn’t give insight into.

Once I felt comfortable enough, I invited my new friend to meet my roommate, my roommate’s boyfriend and I for coffee before attending a game night with friends.

This ensured that there was a safe environment with others around so that neither she or I would be put into an uncertain or possibly dangerous situation that we had no intentions of being in. We hung out, had a couple of good laughs and plan to hang out again soon.

Overall, the experiences I’ve had developing friendships online have been positive. And as young adults, we have the capability to use dating websites to broaden our social groups without the stress of attending every social event.

T

he bats and gloves have been dusted off, infield and base paths raked and dugouts and bullpen properly stocked with buckets of sunflower seeds.

That can only mean one thing: Opening Day is upon us.

A recognizable Georgia State baseball team, hoping to build upon a productive 2013 season, returns to action on Friday afternoon to face the Big Ten’s Illinois Fighting Illini.

“We have an experienced team with a number of talented, veteran players returning, along with some very good newcomers,” Head Coach Greg Frady said. “We won 35 games last year with a very young team, and the majority of that lineup is back.”

Frady acknowledged the move into the Sun Belt Conference as well as the team’s tough non-conference schedule—a 3-game set with Illinois to open the season, a road series versus Mississippi, two games versus cross town rival Georgia Tech and a road matchup versus the University of Georgia. These games will provide quite a challenge for this year’s Panthers.

The pitching rotation returns four weekend starters from last year’s squad. Senior Andrew Fessler, a southpaw from Dallas, Ga., was one of the team’s top pitchers last season after posting a 6-2 record and 3.04 ERA. He threw a team-high 77 innings and fanned 51 batters.

Matt Rose will be another key piece of the Panthers’ pitching puzzle. The former draft pick of the Toronto Blue Jays started three games and earned five saves for Georgia State last season. His potential on the mound and his ability to contribute as a corner outfielder earned Rose a preseason All-Sun Belt Conference selection from Perfect Game college baseball writer Kendall Rogers.

Frady said the addition of several junior college transfers has also bolstered the pitching staff this season. The diversity of arms—10 righties and eight lefties—gives the team a variety of options in late game matchups, according to Frady.

A pitcher’s best friend is solid run support, and last season, the Panthers ranked third in the nation in batting average and fifth in runs per game.

With a majority of that lineup still wearing Panther blue and white, crooked numbers on the scoreboard could be a regularity at Panthersville.

All-Americans Chad Prain and Chase Raffield paced the team’s offense last season and will be relied on again in 2014.

Prain, a senior shortstop from Valdosta, Ga., finished No. 11 in the nation in batting average (.394) last season and totaled 89 hits, two shy of the school record. He joined Rose on the preseason All-Sun Belt Conference list.

Raffield, a native of Cochran, Ga., led the team in homeruns (10) and RBI (51) last season and finished in the top 25 nationally in batting average (.382) and slugging percentage (.645).

“We are known for having a good offensive club,” Frady said, also mentioning Caden Bailey, Nic Wilson, Chris Triplett and Joey Roach.

“We have good hitters up and down our lineup, and any of them are capable of producing big hits and big numbers.”

The Panthers will open the season versus Illinois on Feb. 14 at the Georgia State Baseball Complex. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.

Three basketball starters to join 1,000-point club ALEC MCQUADE Sports Editor

ow that the men’s basketball program’s record for the longest winning streak has been shattered and is old news, the next watch is upon us as Manny Atkins, R.J. Hunter and Ryan Harrow all close in on 1,000 career points.

If each player is able to reach the milestone, they will join senior Devonta White, who reached 1,000 points at the end of the 2012-13 season.

“That’s an incredible stat,” Head Coach Ron Hunter said. “What it

says is that, boy, I wouldn’t want to have to scout this team.”

After scoring 20 points in the Panthers’ 85-65 victory over South Alabama, Atkins tried to say that the milestone was not on his radar, but Hunter, who was sitting to Atkins’ left, coughed, “liar,” making Atkins rephrase his statement.

“My mom, she told me that five or six games ago,” Atkins admitted.

“I told her, ‘Look, that’s a good accomplishment, but at the same time, it’s not in my head when I come into the game that I’ve got to reach 1,000 points,’” Atkins said.

Atkins said he would love to reach 1,000 mark at home but is more concerned about getting the

team a win.

Atkins goes into the team’s next game with 958 career points, while Harrow goes in with 969 career points. Both players’ career points include their points scored with other schools: Atkins at Virginia Tech and Harrow at Kentucky.

Sophomore R.J. Hunter may, however, be the first to reach 1,000, needing just 15 points. All of Hunter’s points have been scored at Georgia State.

If Hunter reaches the milestone in the next two games, he will be the second-fastest player in Georgia State history to reach the milestone, only behind Phillip Luckydo in 1992, who did it in 49 games.

Guard Devonta White reached 1,000 points in the final game of the 2012-13 season in the overtime victory against Northeastern. It was his final shot of the season that put him over the mark.

White said it was one of his favorite accomplishments in his career, adding it was a “great feeling” when it happened.

“Don’t worry about the points,” is White’s advice to Atkins, Hunter and Harrow. “Just stay focused on the win, and the points will come.”

The Panthers go on the road Thursday to face Arkansas-Little Rock at 8 p.m., gunning for their 14th consecutive win.

he Panther faithful is one step closer to having a better football team next season after Georgia State’s performance on National Signing Day. Head coach Trent Miles realized this past season that his team needed to get bigger, stronger and faster if they ever want to win.

The talent deficit was evident as early as the second game of the season, when Georgia State, an FBS (formerly known as Division I-A) program was held to 14 points in a 14-42 loss to the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga on Sept.

“I saw a very poor FCS team in blue today,” Miles said after the Chattanooga game, referring to Georgia State. “I’m just telling it like I see it.”

“It’s a hard dose of reality but that’s where we’re at, and that’s not a Sun Belt team we played today. So, get ready. Be prepared. It’s gonna get tough around here,” Miles said.

As good of a coach Miles was at Indiana State turning its football program around, he can’t teach size.

All season, opposing defenses dominated the undersized offensive line, which allowed 30 sacks, a conference-worst.

It doesn’t matter if you have

Ronnie Bell or even current Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning (Youtube his recent Super Bowl performance) under center; if you’ve got defenders in your face every play, your offense won’t succeed.

Fortunately, Georgia State picked up plenty of size on Signing Day. For the offensive line, Miles picked up 6-5, 360-pound Michael Ivory of Louisville, Ky. and 6-6 305-pound Steve Wolgamott of Maize, Kan. Both linemen are bigger than any offensive lineman Georgia State started last season.

The new additions on the offensive line could be key next season as they could possibly replace seniors Ulrick John and Grant King as the bookend tackles.

The biggest prize for Georgia State on Signing Day, however, was the signing of quarterback Nick Arbuckle of Woodland Hills, Calif.

Arbuckle hasn’t taken a single snap for the Panthers, yet he’s changing the culture of the program, according to Miles.

“Before [Arbuckle] got on campus, [he] started on his own without being directed,” Miles said at Wednesday’s Signing Day press conference. “ Miles said for the first time since he’s been at Georgia State on the weekends, he saw Nick Arbuckle, the wide receivers and the running backs in the office watching film.

Although there’s promise in this year’s recruiting class, the challenge still remains to win a game, which may be difficult if not more because the roster turnover of seniors (27).

Nevertheless, Georgia State is just a young program going into its fifth season of football this fall, still trying to establish its identity.

Prominent football programs like Georgia and Alabama weren’t built in a year, but recruiting helped them greatly to get them where they are today.

At this pace, Georgia State is finally changing its culture and following Miles as he takes the program toward success.

he women’s basketball team kept a dream alive with the Play 4Kay game against Arkansas State. Georgia State played a high-stakes matchup against No. 1 Arkansas State at home in the annual Play 4Kay game.

The Panthers (10-12 overall, 6-4 conference) were No. 2 in the conference and had a chance to take first in the Sun Belt with a victory but came up short.

Despite the Panthers losing 8075, they were playing for a cause. The game was a step closer to making the late North Carolina State (NC State) Women’s Basketball Head Coach Kay Yow’s dream a reality.

Coach Kay Yow’s dream was for every women’s basketball team to do a “pink game,” according to Brenda H. Steen, director of Marketing & Development for Kay Yow Cancer Fund.

Steen worked with NC State in 2005; at the time Yow was battling breast cancer.

A pink game is typically a game where both teams and fans are encouraged to wear pink in support of breast cancer awareness.

Steen said collectively the more people who do these pink games, the more breast cancer research funding they can raise. That is exactly what coach Yow wanted.

wore a variation of their home uniform with the red stripes in their jerseys being replaced by pink stripes.

Off the court, the gym was a sea of pink with majority of the fans on both teams and the Pantherettes donning pink.

“I think everyone knows someone who has been affected by breast cancer,” Baldwin-Tener said. “If it is not a close relative, it’s a friend or someone in your church or someone at work...it is good that we can try to help that cause and bring more awareness and more funding for the needed research.”

Meanwhile, Georgia State honored alum Mary Gilbert, a 17-year breast cancer survivor, during halftime of the game.

Gilbert graduated from the thenGeorgia State College of Business Administration in 1981 with a BBA in accounting. She is now a retired accountant.

How it all started

“We decided to do a pink game, and [Kay] wanted to give people an opportunity to celebrate survivorship and also remind women and their families how important it is to take care of your body,” Steen said.

This idea led to the first “Hoops For Hope” event that took place at NC State in 2006.

Steen said after the second Hoops For Hope game, more colleges started doing them and fabricated nicknames such as “pink games,” among other names.

“Coach Yow started the [Kay Yow Cancer] fund in 2007, and they quickly realize that they needed a name to unite all of these colleges who are playing for Kay,” Steen

said. “That’s where ‘Play 4Kay’ came about.”

Unfortunately, Coach Yow was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 1987 and passed away in 2009.

“The reason [Play 4Kay] is so successful because [Kay] was a fantastic person,” Steen said. “People miss her and it’s a way for people to show how much they care about her.”

Just out of reach

The last time the Panthers played No. 1 Arkansas State was on Jan. 14 at the ASU Convocation Center in Jonesboro, Ark., where they upset the Red Wolves, 76-74.

Unfortunately for Georgia State, there was no upset this time around.

The Panthers were down 33-35 at the half and could not regain the lead they had early.

They were unable to capitalize on a tied score but managed to cut the score down 78-75 with 43 seconds left in the game.

Unfortunately, free throws sealed the Panthers’ fate as they lost 80-75.

“It’s tough for both teams with just two officials and that changes some things and some calls, but it happens and you go on since it affects both teams,” Head Coach Baldwin-Tener said to Georgia State Athletics.

“We get too many fouls on our post players and it hurts our defense.

But if you look at stat sheets at the end of any game and you see almost a 2-to-1 free-throw difference, the team with the most free throws probably wins,” Baldwin-Tener said.

The Panthers dropped to third in the conference, and their next game is Wednesday at home against Texas State at 7 p.m.

Sofiane Chevallier was the difference for the men’s tennis team Saturday, leading them to a 4-3 victory against No. 67 ETSU. Chevallier, who played at the No. 6 singles spot in the lineup, defeated Roger Ordeig in the day’s final match.

He won the first set 6-5 by a tiebreaker score of 8-6. Chevallier was able to take control in the second set, cruising with a score of 6-2 and edging the Panthers to victory.

Chevallier helped the team earlier in the day with doubles partner Jannis Koeke as they defeated Ricardo Pabon and Conner Huertas from ETSU 6-5.

The team’s victory put the Panthers’ overall record at 3-5 and their home record at 3-1.

Chevallier is a junior business major and native of Paris, France.

Senior guard Devonta White led the Panthers in scoring with 22 points and moved into fifth on Georgia State’s all-time scoring list, passing former Panther guard/forward Phillip Luckydo on the all-time career scoring list.

Men’s tennis

The Panthers lost 1-4 to No. 61 Wichita State on Friday afternoon.

Freshman Jannis Koeke was the only Panther who scored a point, winning 6-1, 6-3 at No. 4 singles over Guillermo Nicol.

On Saturday, Georgia State upset No. 67 ETSU 4-3.

Women’s tennis

On Friday, Georgia State lost 5-2 to No. 30 Purdue.

Sophomore Linn Timmermann and senior Abigail Tere-Apisah were the only Panthers who won both of their matches in three-set efforts.

The Panthers lost to No. 28 Tulsa 5-2 in West Lafayette, Ind. on Saturday.

Women’s track and field

The Panthers competed in the Samford Multi & Invitational 2014 at the CrossPlex facility in Birmingham, Ala. on Friday and Saturday.

Senior Tatiana Colbert finished 10 out of 90 runners in the 400m with a time of 56.89, the fastest time in the Sun Belt this year, on Saturday.

JACK HANNA

Jack Hanna, host of the hit TV series Jack Hanna’s Animal Adventures, is one of America’s most beloved naturalists and adventurers. He is the author of four popular books and a regular guest on shows such as Good Morning America, Larry King Live and The Late Show With David Letterman. Hanna gained national attention for transforming Ohio’s rundown Columbus Zoo into a household name, and is now its director emeritus. He and his team will bring live animals to this event.
