Welcome to our Spring Magazine! This new year brings wonderful changes for the Division of Continuing and Professional Education. In this magazine you can read all about our new location and how we plan to use the additional space. We are excited to be able to provide even more highquality training for our business and industry partners and to finally launch our Lifelong Learning Programs later this spring. We will also have plenty of space for hosting conferences and other community activities. If you are planning an event for 200 or less, you will definitely want to check out the CPE Center and our state-of-the-art meeting facilities.

This issue of Advance also highlights the 40+ courses offered as professional development opportunities for PK-12 educators as well as various test preparation courses that are offered virtually (live-online) all year long for students seeking entrance into college and graduate/ professional schools. My hope is that everyone will find something to help them grow personally and professionally. Our mission is to provide opportunities for Enhancing Skills, Elevating Careers, and Enriching Lives, so I invite you to explore these pages and find what interests you. Even before the pandemic, there were worries that the United States educational system was falling behind the shifting needs of the labor market. Professional development for educators looks quite different post-COVID and reflects a new digital learning paradigm that will likely be the new norm in the future.

In response to COVID-19, more recent initiatives in this area demonstrate a desire to encourage collaboration and build learning opportunities rooted in educators' everyday experiences. Still, they also point to a need to consider the longevity and impact of such activities. High-quality professional development offerings will help educators make the most of the challenges created by the pandemic and build their resilience in the face of future disruption and change.

CONTINUING EDUCATION FOR K-12 EDUCATORS Complete at your pace and within 6 months Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder: Information & Interventions for Effective Teaching This course will help the learner achieve a better understanding of ADHD and intervention strategies to facilitate positive student change. This course covers the history of the disorder, accepted methods to assess and identify students with the disorder, and various methods, medications, and strategies that are currently used to treat it.

PLUs: 3 Duration: 6 Months Autism Spectrum Disorder: Information & Effective Intervention Strategies This course helps you comprehend why individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder act the way they do and what you can do to enhance more appropriate behavior. This course also lists resources for educators, related service personnel, and parents who would like more help or information on autism.

PLUs: 3 Duration: 6 Months Behavior is Language: Strategies for Managing Disruptive Behavior This course is designed to give the learner a new perspective on student behavior and effective tools to facilitate positive student change. This course provides a developmental framework to help the learner understand what students are trying to communicate through the "language" of their behavior.

Build School Communities: Brain Smart Classroom Management This course helps teachers build genuine bonds between themselves and their students and between students and their classmates to create “kindred classhomes” with a foundation of acceptance, respect, and shared purpose.

This course will help you develop strategies, rituals, and environmental design skills to create these safe havens of learning: kindred classhomes where students and teachers work together in synergistic ways that benefit all members of the school family.

PLUs: 3 Duration: 6 Months Early Childhood: Family-Centered Services This course is designed to give you a new perspective on serving the needs of young children and their families. In this course you will learn what is meant by family-centered services as it applies to diverse systems of care, gain an understanding of family diversity, and explore the major stress factors facing families today.

PLUs: 3 Duration: 6 Months Early Childhood: Observation & Assessment This course explores observation and assessment instruments, as well as recommended practices and available resources for infants, toddlers, and preschoolers. Content includes an emphasis on observing young children and assessing their early childhood learning environments.

PLUs: 4.5 Duration: 6 Months Early Childhood: Program Planning This course is designed to give you a new perspective on planning and implementing developmentally appropriate programs for young children from birth through age eight.

In this course, you will learn what is meant by curriculum, assessment, evaluation, and program planning as these terms apply to early childhood education.

English Language Learner: Evaluation & Assessment Evaluation & Assessment of ESL Students was written to help teachers understand concepts and terms related to evaluating and assessing students whose first language is not English. This course discusses what is a high-quality assessment and the scope of assessments including initial placement, annual assessments, and exit assessments.

PLUs: 4.5 Duration: 6 Months English Language Learner: Language Acquisition Language Acquisition was written to help teachers understand concepts and terms related to educating students whose first language is not English. This course discusses developmental theories and how they apply to English language learners. The focus of this course is on the process of second language acquisition and the role of the classroom teacher.

PLUs: 4.5 Duration: 6 Months English Language Learner: Methods & Materials Methods & Materials was written to help teachers understand concepts and terms related to educating students whose first language is not English. This course discusses how to apply instructional methods in creating lessons; how to create a motivating and caring learning environment; how to integrate teaching reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills; how to differentiate instruction for English language learners; and how to identify culturally appropriate curriculum and instructional resources.

PLUs: 4.5 Duration: 6 Months Harassment, Bullying & Cyber-Intimidation in Schools Harassment, Bullying & Cyber-Intimidation in Schools will discuss definitions and the personal, social, and legal ramifications associated with sexual harassment, bullying, and cyber-intimidation. The course will address what we know about these troubling areas. We will then explore preventative strategies as well as how school staff can address these issues when they occur.

Inclusion: Working with Students with Special Needs in General Education Classrooms This course is designed to help special and general educators gain a better understanding of inclusion, one of the current educational reform movements that advocates educating students with disabilities in the general education classrooms. Upon course completion, the learner will be able to define key concepts and terms, identify and describe federal legislature and court cases, and list and describe the federal definition of students entitled to special services.

Early Childhood: Typical & Atypical Development This course explores contemporary best practice and perspectives on early childhood development. Content includes patterns and sequences of typical development for children from birth to six years. Emphasis is on individual differences, cultural influences, and the impact of developmental delay and disability during infancy, toddlerhood, and the preschool years.

Infant & Toddler Mental Health: Issues & Information for Educators This course is designed to help educators achieve a better understanding of infant and toddler mental health, child development, and strategies that can be used to promote positive relationships with children and their families.

PLUs: 3 Duration: 6 Months Learning Disabilities: Practical Information for the Classroom Teacher This course describes diverse theoretical approaches to handling learning disabilities in the classroom. It lays the foundation for sensitive, appropriate assessment and evaluation of students.

PLUs: 3 Duration: 6 Months Reading Fundamentals #1: An Introduction to Scientificallybased Research The purpose of this course is to improve your knowledge of science and the scientific process. This is the first course in a three-course series.

PLUs: 3 Duration: 6 Months Reading Fundamentals #2: Laying the Foundation for Effective Reading Instruction Designed to lay the foundation for effective reading instruction, this course will teach you about the elements of effective instruction and the importance of reading instruction.

Reading Fundamentals #3: The Elements of Effective Reading Instruction & Assessment This course will focus on learning to read, reading to learn, and an introduction to reading assessment. As part of these key areas of reading instruction, the five elements of effective reading instruction will be highlighted, including definitions, implications for instruction, and future directions.

Teacher Professional Development

Teaching Diversity: Influences & Issues in the Classroom Designed to give the learner the knowledge, tools, and dispositions to effectively facilitate a diverse classroom, this course teaches how to understand and identify differences in approaches to learning and performance, including different learning styles and ways in which students demonstrate learning.

PLUs: 3 Duration: 6 Months Traumatized Child: The Effects of Stress, Trauma & Violence on Student Learning This course is designed to help classroom teachers, school counselors, and other educational personnel gain strategies to reach and teach students who have been affected by stress, trauma, and/or violence.

Participants will learn the signs and symptoms of stress and trauma and explore how stress, violence, and trauma affect a student's learning, cognitive brain development, and social-emotional development.

PLUs: 3 Duration: 6 Months Try DI!: Planning & Preparing a Differentiated Instruction Program Try DI! is designed to provide you an opportunity to learn about an instructional framework, Differentiated Instruction (DI), aimed at creating supportive learning environments for diverse learning populations. Students will be presented a method for self-assessment of the extent to which their current instructional approach reflects the perspective, principles, and practices of the DI approach.

Understanding Aggression: Coping with Aggressive Behavior This course includes topics on violence, aggression in the classroom, youth gangs, aggression in sports and on television, how drugs and alcohol play a role in aggression and violence, and "hot spots" that tend to breed aggression and violence. It is designed to help school personnel become more aware of the causes of aggression and ways to evaluate it and intervene before it turns to violence in the schools.

PLUs: 4.5 Duration: 6 Months Violence in Schools: Identification, Prevention & Intervention Strategies This course is designed to give participants an understanding of school violence and increase intervention strategies. The course provides an overview of violence and the motivational purposes behind aggression. The correlation and impact of the media, community, and family upon violence is investigated.

PLUs: 3 Duration: 6 Months Why DI?: An Introduction to Differentiated Instruction This course is an interactive computer-based instruction course, designed to give you an understanding of the framework of and need for creating supportive learning environments for diverse learning populations.

This conference serves as a professional diversity platform. Each year, clinicians, educators, higher education professionals, change agents and students gather for two days of critical interactions and community around topics of oppression, identity, society and social action. The conference’s renowned William Cross Jr. Lecture Series invites participants to deeply explore the topic of identity. With an emphasis on skillbuilding, attendees leave the conference with practical, actionable strategies that embrace anti-oppressive perspectives.

Georgia Southern University (GSU) and the U.S. Army Forces Command (FORSCOM) will host a collaborative human performance optimization (HPO) summit in March 2023. The summit will offer educational sessions for both the individual soldier and the providers who work with them. The content is focused on improving physical and mental readiness for soldiers and will have lecture and lab based offerings.

SOUTHEAST COASTAL CONFERENCE ON LANGUAGES & LITERATURES Savannah, GA • April 13 - 14, 2023

The Southeast Coastal Conference on Languages & Literatures (SECCLL) is a scholarly conference gathering that attracts scholars from the region and beyond. SECCLL is oriented toward the participation of scholars from both public and private institutions of higher education.

SOUTHEAST CONFERENCE ON SCHOOL CLIMATE Savannah, GA • June 5 - 7, 2023

The Southeast Conference on School Climate (SeCSC) is a two and half day conference that provides research-based resources for improving school culture, climate, and safety.

Administrators, counselors, and teachers participate in sessions packed with practical, evidencebased strategies aimed at creating learning environments to improve every student’s mental, behavioral, and academic performances. The SeCSC primary strands include Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports, Mental Health, School Safety, Social Emotional Learning, Restorative Practices, and Mindfulness and Wellbeing. In addition, each conference session supports topics related to strategies that can be used for School Improvement Plans (SIP).

NEW BEGINNINGS: THE LONG-AWAITED OPENING OF THE CPE CENTER The Division of Continuing and Professional Education (CPE) is excited to announce the opening of their new building, located at 10449 US Hwy 301 S., which was formerly the East Georgia State College Statesboro campus. At this new location, CPE will be able to offer more face-to-face and virtual professional development, customized training, and personal enrichment programs, as well as conferences and events with state-of-the-art technology. CPE Director, Dr. Diane Badakhsh, described the benefits of the move by saying, “Although we were sad to move from the Nessmith-Lane Conference Center in 2020, we knew our new location would give us more dedicated space to serve the businesses and organizations in this area. We have updated technology, more space, and much better parking; and, we continue to have use of one of the largest event spaces on-campus, the Nessmith-Lane Ballroom. We will also be able to launch our new lifelong learning program which will provide educational and personal enrichment opportunities for individuals over 50.”

The new CPE Center is the latest example of the University’s commitment to Community Engagement as it is expected to be a beacon for community activity, corporate training, and lifelong learning. Check out what services, CPE has in store for the new center.

Community Programs - Enriching Lives In this new space, CPE's Community Programs unit will continue to serve individuals of all ages, from summer camps and test prep courses for youth, to lifelong learning programs for seniors, as well as meeting/event spaces for organizations. Although CPE currently offers online personal enrichment courses in the areas of health and wellness, foreign languages, writing, photography, and personal finance and investing, having dedicated space will give CPE the opportunity to launch a Lifelong Learning Program similar to Seniors Citizens Inc. in Savannah and the Osher Lifelong Learning Institutes (OLLI) at University of Georgia, Kennesaw State University, University of South Carolina Beaufort, near Hilton Head, and Coastal Carolina University in Myrtle Beach. According to Misty Collier, Community Programs Manager, “the new Lifelong Learning Program will include educational opportunities on a variety of topics, fun activities, and planned trips to incredible destinations that could vary from a single day to week long excursions. Our friendly and welcoming environment will heighten the desire to learn and create an intellectual community where members feel they belong.”

Conference Services - Enhancing Skills CPE Conference Services partners with academic departments and external organizations to plan and facilitate professional conferences. This department's objective is to provide the highest quality of professional development and networking opportunities for conference attendees so they can enhance their skills.

Services offered by the department include venue sourcing/negotiation, marketing, registration, CEU applications, call for proposals, speaker contracts, recruiting and coordinating exhibitors and sponsors, and on-site assistance.

"Most of our conferences are off-site; however, the CPE Center is a great space and we are excited to use it for conferences with up to 200 attendees,” said Conference Services Manager, Akilah King. “The classrooms at the center are supplied with instructor stations, whiteboards, digital monitors, and technology necessary for live and virtual offerings. In the future, we hope to supplement our existing services and increase the number of hybrid conferences for our clients." Akilah and her staff look forward to working with new academic departments and organizations to bring quality conferences to the southeast region.

Professional Development and Customized Training - Elevating Careers The Professional Development and Customized Training unit supports business and industry in their workforce development initiatives by offering leadership development and succession planning programs, resilience building, process improvement, and executive education, to name a few. This unit partners with faculty, staff, and subject matter experts to develop and deliver targeted training programs for business, industry, military, and government agencies. At the new CPE Center, the community can expect in-person and virtual programs that will meet this region’s growing demand for a highly skilled workforce.

WHY COLLEGE ENTRANCE EXAMS STILL MATTER High Test Scores Aid Student College Admissions Applications

Do entrance exams for undergraduate and graduate school still matter?

Since COVID, many colleges have abandoned their entrance exam requirements. In Georgia, for example, 24 of the 26 USG colleges have developed test-optional pathways for admissions, including Georgia Southern University, Kennesaw State University, and Georgia State University. So, why should a student still take the ACT or SAT? There are several important reasons why students should still take the SAT/ACT. First, students who are wanting to receive the Zell Miller Scholarship are still required to submit their SAT/ACT scores. They must graduate from high school with a 3.7 GPA, score 26 on the ACT, and or score 1200 on the SAT. Second, schools such as University of Georgia, Georgia Institute of Technology and other prestigious schools continue to require minimum SAT or ACT scores to be considered for admission. University of Georgia’s minimum score for SAT Reading and Writing is 480 with SAT Math being 440 and ACT scores of 17 for English and Math. Georgia Institute of Technology requires SAT scores between 1360 and 1540 with ACT scores from 31-35. Third, although schools such as Georgia Southern and Savannah State, and Columbus State University waived the ACT/SAT test scores, they still have their own GPA minimum requirements ranging from 3.4 to 2.0. For students who do not meet the minimum GPA for the college they are applying to, they may still be eligible for admission if they submit high ACT/SAT scores showing that they are capable of college-level work. Lastly, students who are planning to attend a college or university may need their ACT/SAT scores to be eligible to take college-level of English and Math courses. Georgia Southern University has placement policies for students who score below 480 on the SAT-Reading and 440 SAT-Math and ACT English and Math test scores below 17, are then placed in remedial courses. Dr. Amy Clines, Office of Undergraduate Admissions Director at Georgia Southern University, warns, “When applying for entry and for scholarships, there are tight windows for deadlines, especially if you have to re-test.

Therefore, preparing for the test in advance is a great idea. The tests cost money and taking it more than once is both a financial and time investment. And although most schools have extended the test-optional requirements, they can still reinstate them in the future.“ "With the uncertainty of what admissions requirements will look like in the future, if students prep now and take their tests early, they will have those test scores ready if they need it," said Dr. Clines. "The higher you can perform on one iteration, the better. The value of test prep is that it helps prepare students physically and mentally for higher performance on the test. The time and monetary commitment you make to prep will show value. There are tools you can take away from the prep and apply on test day."
