Lai arī Gundegas Strautmanes veidotos darbus var uzskatīt par tradīciju modernizēšanu, ornaments tajos parādās savdabīgā, no tradīcijas būtiski atšķirīgā veidā. Māksliniece izmantojusi Braila raksta zīmes, kurās transkribējusi kristiešu lūgšanu frāzes un uzrakstījusi tās ar sataustāmu pērlīšu palīdzību. Šīs pērlīšu-zīmju kopas izkārtotas simetriskā ritmā, gan atkārtojot lūgšanas tekstu, gan arī veidojot iespaidīgu, dekoratīvu rakstu. Rezultātā darbi ilustrē klasisku konceptuālistu gājienu, kurā vēl piedevām tiek izmests salto: teksts pirmām kārtām padarīts par trīsdimensionālu fizisku struktūru. Tas ir lasāms un tā saturs uztverams tikai ar taustes palīdzību; atkārtojumi un atkārtojumu kopu ornamentālais izkārtojums sniedz arī sensuāli estētisku, ne tikai literāru pieredzi. Lielai sabiedrības daļai nav specifiskās Braila lasīšanas prasmes, tādēļ teksta nozīme šiem cilvēkiem nav pieejama un fiziskā struktūra jeb pats teksts kalpo vien par dekoru, kam piemīt ārēji pievilcīga, ornamentāla forma. Taču tiek pateikts priekšā, ka šī ornamentālā forma ir lūgšana, tiek aktualizēts noteikts kristiānisks un vēsturisks konteksts, kādā to skatīt. Reliģiskā perspektīva iedarbina iztēli, un ritmiskās, centriskās struktūras vedina iztēloties kosmisko kārtību, Visuma plašumu, dabas cikliskumu utt. – pārlaicīgas kategorijas, ar kurām tieši vai netieši operē reliģija. Šis līmenis savukārt nav pieejams tiem, kuri savā ikdienas saziņā ir spiesti lietot Braila rakstu.

Kopumā autore radījusi ne tikai vizuāli un tehnoloģiski iespaidīgus mākslas darbus, bet arī hibrīdus ar vairākiem jēgas slāņiem. Šos darbus var baudīt arī vājredzīgi un akli cilvēki, kam vizuālā māksla būtībā nav pieejama. Māksliniece ir testējusi savus darbus Strazdumuižas internātā un Juglas neredzīgo pansionātā, lai noskaidrotu, vai tie ir tiesīgi pretendēt uz neredzīgiem cilvēkiem uztveramas mākslas statusu.

Even though Gundega Strautmane’s works can be considered as “the modernization of tradition”, their ornamental patterns are distinctive and significantly different from the traditional form. The artist has used Braille characters to transcribe phrases from Christian prayers, writing them out in raised, tactile beads. These sets of bead characters are arranged in a symmetrical rhythm, both spelling out the text of the prayer and creating an impressive, decorative pattern.

As a result, the works are an illustration of a classic conceptualist path, with an unexpected twist: the text is first of all made into a threedimensional physical structure. It may be read and its content perceived only through touch; repetitions and the ornamental arrangement of sets of repetitions provide not just a literary experience, but a sensually aesthetic one as well. A large part of society does not possess the spe- cific skill of reading Braille, therefore the meaning of the text is not accessible to these people and the physical structure or the text itself serves merely as an attractive, ornamental decoration.

However, it is suggested to the viewer that this ornamental form is a prayer, hence a specific Christian and historical context is brought into play when viewing the work. The religious perspective kick-starts the imagination, and the rhythmical, centric structures encourage thoughts of cosmic order, the vastness of the Universe, the cyclic aspect of nature etc. – timelesscategories that religion operates with, either directly or indirectly. This level, in turn, is not available to those who have to use Braille in their everyday communication.

On the whole, the author has created works of art that are not just visually and technologically impressive – they are also hybrids with several layers of meaning. These works can be enjoyed by partially sighted and blind people, for whom the visual arts are generally not accessible. The artist has tested her works at Strazdumuiža boarding school and the Jugla Home for the Blind, to find out whether they qualify as art that is accessible to the sightless.

ATTIECĪBU ORNAMENTI (2010) Projekta tiek piedavati apskatei dažadu attiecibu modeļi, kurus un savā profesionalajā darbībā fiksējis sociālo tīklu pētnieks Valdis Krebs. Cilveki un starp viņiem pastāvoša saikne* tiek apzīmeti ar punktu un līniju. Šie, kā es tos nolēmu nodēvēt, attiecību ornamenti, mani iedvesmoja mākslas darbu radīšanai, tiklīdz tos ieraudzīju. Var teikt viss radīšanas process izvērtās meditācijā. Šoreiz mans darba materiāls nebija pavediens un tā stiprinajumi, bet gan simboliski ar tiem apzīmetie cilveki un starp tiem pastavoša saite.

ORNAMENTS OF RELATIONSHIPS (2010) Within the framework of the project, patterns of various relationships are being offered, traced during his activities by observer of social networks, Valdis Krebs. People and the connections* between them are marked with a dot and a line. These ornaments of relationships, as I decided to call them, inspired me to create works of art, as soon as I saw them. I would admit that all this process of creative work turned into meditation of a certain kind. This time, the material for my work was not a thread and its fastenings, but people and relationships between them, therewith depicted symbolically.

We all live in multiple on-line communities.

What do these communities look like? Where are we located in each of our communities, and what role do we play? The diagram below shows an actual on-line community [OLC]. Every node in the network represents a person. A link between two nodes reveals a relationship or connection between two people in the community the social network.

Most on-line communities consist of three social rings a densely connected core in the center, loosely connected fragments in the second ring, and an outer ring of disconnected nodes, commonly known as lurkers. Communities have various levels of belonging each represented by one of these rings. You may belong in the core of one community, while being a peripheral lurker in another.
