During the 2026 Annual Meeting at Camp Agnes Arnold in April, outgoing Girl Scouts of San Jacinto (GSSJC) Board President Betsy Kamin was thanked for her generous service to the council with a special surprise: a baby Highland cow that will live at Misty Meadows Ranch! Betsy has named him Shaggy Low, and we look forward to him bringing joy to Girl Scouts in the coming years!

Powered by Partnership: Girl Scouting with Sempra Infrastructure

GSSJC is proud to partner with Sempra Infrastructure to bring the power of Girl Scouting to girls in Beaumont, Orange, and Port Arthur. Thanks to their generous support, our Girl Scout Outreach program is reaching girls in 13 schools, and providing critical financial assistance to families across the area.

Through the Outreach program, Girl Scouting is delivered directly during the school day, eliminating common barriers such as transportation challenges, limited volunteer availability, and cost. Led by trained Girl Scout staff who serve as trusted mentors, the program offers girls meaningful, age-appropriate learning experiences that promote confidence, leadership, and overall well-being.

This year, girls are enjoying power-themed curriculum designed to meet their developmental needs and to explore the power that lies within themselves. For girls in grades K–5, the Girl Power curriculum uses fun, hands-on activities focused on self-esteem and empowerment. Girls explore the importance of physical and mental health, build strong character, and learn to respect differences in themselves and others.

Middle and high school girls participate in the Power Up curriculum, which helps strengthen critical life skills through activities addressing peer pressure, conflict resolution and anger management, harassment prevention, healthy relationships, and online safety, topics especially relevant as girls navigate adolescence.

This spring, girls from two Port Arthur schools took part in a SPARK weekend at Casa Mare, where many experienced camp for the first time. The girls made slime, practiced archery, challenged themselves on the low ropes course, and, most importantly, made lifelong memories in a supportive, confidence-building environment.

In addition to Outreach programming, Sempra Infrastructure’s support of financial assistance helps ensure that cost is not a barrier to participation for girls and their families. We are deeply grateful to Sempra Infrastructure for investing in both meaningful programming and access, helping ensure more girls can grow, lead, and thrive through Girl Scouting.

UH Students Connect with Professionals at GSSJC Lessons in Networking Event

GSSJC welcomed members of the University of Houston’s Delta Zeta sorority to the Program Place for Girls for an inspiring evening focused on professional networking and empowerment.

The March event featured three dynamic rounds of speed mentoring, during which participants chatted with 16 accomplished professional women. Through these conversations, the young women strengthened their confidence, sharpened essential networking skills, and gained real-world insights to support their future careers. Many of the mentors are part of GSSJC’s Women’s Leadership Network (WLN).

Thank you to the incredible mentors who generously shared their time, wisdom, and encouragement. Your dedication is helping to shape confident, capable leaders – and making a lasting difference in the lives of the next generation. Interested in being a part of WLN, contact Diane Likeness at dlikeness@sjgs.org or 713-292-0346.

HCA Medical Day Inspires the Next Generation of Healthcare Leaders

HCA Houston Healthcare Pearland opened its doors to local Girl Scouts this Spring for an unforgettable, hands-on Medical Day, giving them an inspiring look into the many STEM careers that keep a hospital running.

The day began with a warm welcome from the hospital’s CEO, who shared his journey from nurse to leader, reminding girls that there are many paths into health care. As they toured radiology, surgery, and the lab, the girls discovered how each department plays a vital role in patient care. In the lab, the girls learned how imaging, sterilization procedures, and diagnostic testing are critical to positive health outcomes.

They wrapped up with conversations with nurses who shared their day-to-day work and what inspired them to pursue nursing careers. The girls even learned how to perform CPR, gaining a valuable life-saving skill. The girls met a physician and native Houstonian who shared what it takes to pursue a career in medicine.

Thank you to HCA Houston Healthcare for opening your doors and sparking curiosity. Experiences like Medical Day help girls build confidence, explore career possibilities, and imagine their future in health care and STEM.
