Direct Sale We’ve heard you! GSSJC is dedicated to making the cookie season easier for both girls and volunteers. This year, starting inventory orders will be placed upfront. That means less time spent ordering cookies and more time developing entrepreneurial skills!

The 2019-2020 membership year is in full swing. Welcome back to our returning members and a special welcome to our new members. I hope by now that everyone is registered, troops are formed and volunteers are trained. Thanks to everyone who participated in recruiting, training or helped in any way to make this recruiting season successful. Research has shown that you are our best Dee Hinkle recruiters. Girls are most likely to Chair of the Board and join when asked by current members.

President of the Council It’s never too late to offer girls the opportunity to join our Movement and be a Girl Scout.

At the same time we are busy recruiting, many of our members are still busy selling Fall Product.

Unlike the Girl Scout Cookie Program which has a broader objective, the Fall Product Program is a friends and family program designed to provide new troops revenue early in the year. Despite the scaled back nature of the Fall Product Program, its success depends on volunteers and parents. Another big thank you to everyone who organized, trained, bought or sold Fall Product. Don't forget, you can sell until Nov. 17! It's never too late to start! We can't have a successful program without you.

While recruiting and fundraising are necessary for our success, there has been much more going on this fall. Girls have participated in activities centered on our four program pillars: life skills, entrepreneurship, outdoors and STEM. Of course there have been tea parties, and why not? Who doesn’t love a tea party? But as with most Girl Scout activities, there is real learning in the fun.

Tea parties offer lessons in manners and acceptable behavior mixed with a strong dose of history while having fun. In addition to tea parties, our members have been experiencing life lessons activities that include learning about car care, money management, first aid, healthy eating and exercise. Our popular and successful robotics program is providing our members who are interested in STEM exposure to planning, design, construction and competition. Coding, astronomy, cybersecurity and healthcare are a few of our other popular activities focused on STEM.

We have been ROCKING (no pun intended) outdoor activities where our members have been camping, sailing, backpacking, and learning about animals and their habitats. Especially exciting this fall is the new Outdoor Adventure Club that offers its members monthly sojourns to locations far and wide. And the Fall Product and the upcoming Cookie Program are the cornerstones of our entrepreneurship programs. If you’ve ever watched our members giggle at cookie booths or count their money with joy when delivering product, it is hard to question if our program results in learning about planning, goal setting, time management and so much more, all while having fun. We offer so much more than crafts and camping. All these research-based, girl-led activities provide fun learning opportunities that develop tomorrow’s leaders who are women of courage, confidence and character.

I hope you have participated or are planning to participate in one of the many programs we offered this fall. With the holiday season just around the corner, I wish each of you and your families a happy holiday season and a great new year filled with fun and learning.

Quick overview of what’s new?

Direct Sale – GSSJC is moving to a model called a direct sale. This means rather than having an extended order-taking period where girls circle back to customers with deliveries 2-3 weeks later, they will start the Cookie Program with cookies in hand. Councils who use this model consistently see their sales increase significantly, meaning girls are earning more proceeds for troop activities.

GSSJC moving to Direct Sale for 2020 Cookie Program

Why are we moving to a direct sale? We heard you: the Cookie Program needs to be shorter and easier to participate in. After the 2019 cookie season, GSSJC reviewed your feedback and took a look at the Cookie Program. We’ve made several changes this year to make it easier than ever, the first of which is GSSJC is moving to a direct sale model.

What does this mean? In short, that means girls start the Cookie Program with cookies in-hand rather than taking orders and customers having to wait 3 – 4 weeks to receive their cookies. This means instant gratification for cookie customers and an easier delivery process for girls and parents.

By moving to a direct sale we've been able to simplify the process and shorten the Cookie Program from 12 weeks to seven. Plus girls will receive their recognitions earlier.

How a direct sale works

In a direct sale, troops review their previous year’s total sales to determine how many cases they want to order. This will now be called the starting inventory. We recommend troops order at least 80% of their final sales in the 2019 Cookie Program. This will help avoid repeated runs to cookie cupboards and the need to restock frequently. The logistic of the order process are being finalized and will be communicated to troop cookie managers via Cookie Basics and the Online Community (community.gssjc.org).

Once the order is placed, troops will pick up their starting inventory in the same way they always have. The council will schedule a series of cookie drops where troops pick up their cookies, then distribute them to girls. Troop Cookie deliveries are Jan. 23 – Feb. 1.

When might the optional paper order card come in handy? Think of this as a tool to use in locations where it might not be feasible to bring the cookies and sell door-to-door, like in a workplace, at school or in your place of worship.

Or, once the sale starts on February 1, you might keep the optional paper order card handy in case you run out of a variety of cookies when you are going doorto-door and circle back to customers requesting that variety when your inventory is restocked. Starting January 23, girls will also gain access to Smart Cookies, a digital order-taking tool.

Then on February 1 – the official start of the 2020 Cookie Program – girls can begin knocking on doors to sell cookies in their neighborhood. The good news about moving to a direct sale model? Councils who use this model consistently see their sales increase significantly, because customer buy more when girls have cookies in-hand. This means. girls are earning more proceeds for troop activities!

Cookie booths will begin on February 14, and the sign-up for these will function the same way as previous years. The 2020 Cookie Program will end on March 22.

New Packaging – Cookie packaging has been updated for 2020! We’re excited to share this refresh with you and cookie customers. The new images feature girls who were named winners in the 2018 Cookie Pro contest hosted by Girl Scouts of the USA. Order Placing – GSSJC has made changes to placing orders and we’re excited to roll them out!

This season, troop cookie managers will be placing a starting inventory order for your troop upfront.

With these changes, GSSJC is looking to streamline the experience for both girls and customers. No more constant orders or waiting for cookies.

Optional Order Card – Girls will have the option of using an order card beginning Jan. 23 to take orders and plan their customer deliveries in locations where it might not be feasible to bring the cookies and sell door-to-door, like in a workplace, at school or in your place of worship.

Shorter Cookie Season – We’ve heard you! We know that cookie season can feel overwhelming for many troops and girls. For 2020, we’ve shortened the cookie season. Girls will start selling cookies on Feb. 1 and the program will end on March 22 – that’s about a month shorter than the 2019 Cookie Program.

Gluten-Free Cookies – This season, gluten-free cookies will increase to $6 per package. This is to keep in line with the cost of production. All other cookies will remain at $5 per package. Troops had the opportunity to preorder gluten-free cookies for their troops in October. Any additional gluten-free cookies will ONLY be available at the Girl Scout Center cupboard and will be extremely limited and first come, first served.

When can I start selling cookies?: February 1. However, beginning January 23, Girl Scouts can use tools like Smart Cookies or an optional order card to begin checking with customers. The order card will also be helpful to plan their customer deliveries in locations where it might not be feasible to bring the cookies and sell door-to-door, like in a workplace, at school or in your place of worship.

Will there be an order card?: Yes, but it is an optional tool available to girls, should they wish to use it. They can also use Smart Cookies to collect orders via their online storefront that can be delivered in-person or shipped directly to the cookie customer.

Where does the money go?: The money troops raise can be used to offset the cost of activities, outings, program supplies and so much more! The revenue earned by the troops can be used to fund troop camping weekends, program initiatives, attend badge workshops or even attend GSUSA’s G.I.R.L. 2020 in Orlando! There’s so much that can be done with the funds raised through the Cookie Program.

Why should my girl sell?: Being a part of the 2020 Cookie Program not only helps raise funds for your troop, but it also exposes your Girl Scout to critical career and life management skills–goal setting, decision making, money management, people skills and business ethics. Girls learn these valuable skills (and more) by participating in the program.

How do I join the Cookie Program?: Talk to your Girl Scout’s troop leader about her troop’s participation. Most troops host an informational meeting for families prior to the start of the program.

Want to step up and help your Girl Scout’s troop meet their Cookie Program goals? Ask your troop leader or troop cookie manager how you can help. We’d love to have you!

When is it too late to join the Cookie Program?: Never! Girls and their troops can begin anytime should they wish to join after the official start of the program. The Cookie Program is a great way for troops to earn funds for their activities, and there is always a demand for Girl Scout Cookies – customers love them!

How many cases should our troop order?

We know ordering cookies up front is a change, so we’ve put together the below formula to help troops figure out how many cases they’ll need. These numbers are based on the starting inventory girl rewards. If you need help, there will also be an online cookie calculation tool. When a troop orders an average of 160 packages per participating girl in the troop, they’ll receive the first starting inventory reward. These rewards will be given to you at your delivery site. See the chart below.

If you are a returning troop and this calculation results in an initial starting inventory that is less than 80% of your previous year’s final sales, you may want to increase your starting inventory order to 80% of your previous year’s final sales to avoid repeated runs to the cookie cupboards.

How to help your Girl Scout get started Participating in the Girl Scout Cookie Program provides girls with a leadership experience that helps them build skills they will use today and tomorrow, such as money management (her allowance today, paycheck tomorrow), people skills (nailing those college interviews) and goal setting (knowing how to step up to a challenge – anytime, anywhere).

When she has her family’s support, there’s nothing a Girl Scout can’t do. The Girl Scout Cookie Program is a great opportunity for families to discuss being responsible with money. It is not just the largest girl-led business in the country; it’s also the largest financial literacy program for girls. Financial literacy – knowing how to make, manage, spend and invest money – is a critical skill that impacts the quality of your Girl Scout’s future. The Girl Scout Cookie Program activities are designed to help your Girl Scout move toward a financially independent future.

Nine steps to cookie-selling success Your Girl Scout Cookie customers know how much they love Shortbreads, but they may not know about the skills you learn by participating in the Cookie Program. We’re talking about things like goal setting, decision making, money management, people skills and business ethics – stuff you need to know to be successful. We’ve made a super-simple guide to help you get the most of your cookie selling experience.

Say hello: Just say “hi.” It gets everything off on the right foot. Make eye contact. It can be kind of weird looking people you don’t know in the eye and talking to them. But it’s a big part of building trust and respect for others. It says, “Hey, we’re serious about what we’re doing.”

Ask if she’s a Girl Scout: You’ll be surprised at how many Girl Scouts are out there. More than 59 million women have been part of Girl Scouts. Ask what it was like for her.

Share your goal: You and your team have set goals and made decisions about what you’ll do with the money you earn. Maybe you’re going to a place you haven’t been or supporting a cause you care about. Whatever it is, let people know. They’ll be impressed.

Show off your inventory: Everyone has a favorite cookie, but there are a lot of different ones.

So be prepared to tell them about all the cookies in your inventory.

Point out our package design: The cookie packages tell the story of what Girl Scouts do. Show your customers the packages and tell them your own story.

Talk about money: Money is a big responsibility. Even if you get help from a volunteer, you have to make sure you have a role in handling it and managing it. And you need your customers to know how you plan to use the money you earn. So make sure they know.

Share why you’re a Girl Scout: Everyone joins Girl Scouts for a different reason. Whether it’s to make friends or accomplish big things–or both–let people know.

Find out how you did: Your cookie business is hard work. Always welcome tips on how to be better at it. And if they don’t tell you, find out. After the sale, ask the customer how the sale went and what you could’ve done to make it better.

Say thanks: Saying “thank you” is easy. And it means a lot to the people buying cookies.

Why is participating in the Cookie Program important?

How troops use their cookie proceeds

Want to know a secret? The Cookie Program isn’t about cookies. Shocked? You shouldn’t be! The Cookie Program is all about your Girl Scout.

How a Girl Scout troop uses their cookie proceeds is entirely up to the girls! Let’s assume this troop of 12 Girl Scouts sold enough cookies to earn the top starting inventory reward, which is 250 packages per girl. The troop would receive roughly $2,250 in proceeds from selling this amount.

When she’s participating in the Cookie Program, here’s what she’s actually doing: • •

She’s learning the 5 Skills – goal setting, decision making, money management, people skills and business ethics.

And all those skills? They transfer to other areas of her life, like becoming more responsible with her allowance, making a decision about college or developing leadership skills that’ll turn her into the next all-star female CEO. She’s raising proceeds for her troop to do great things, like go camping, fund a service project or pay to attend a badge workshop.

She’s paying it forward and making the Girl Scout experience possible for ALL girls in our council. Proceeds also go towards maintaining camp properties, keeping activity fees affordable and helping girls in underserved areas participate in Girl Scouts.

Here is a quick example of how they might use their proceeds: • Attend Carousel camping weekend ($30/girl or adult) - $420 • Attend a Cybersecurity badge workshop ($23 per girl) - $276 • Hike with Henry at Camp Agnes Arnold ($6 per girl) - $72 • Renew all girls’ memberships during Early Bird to earn an exclusive patch ($25 per girl) - $300 • Service project benefitting a local animal shelter - $200 • Save for future troop trip or use for other activities - $982

Where does the money go?

It’s one of the most-asked questions during the Cookie Program: where is my money going? And it’s a great one because it gives us a chance to show all the amazing things that happen in Girl Scouts. More importantly, it gives girls the chance to tell customers about the awesome experiences their troop will have as a result of each purchase.

In GSSJC, here’s where every cent of each package sold goes: 2% - Other 2% - Recognitions for Girls 60% - Girl Scout 16% - Troop Program and Community Proceeds

Volunteer for a Cookie Cupboard and earn a special patch Have fun, get exercise and make friends while helping count and load cookies for troops. Volunteers can be parents, husbands, friends, aunts, uncles, brothers, sisters and pretty much anyone over the age of 18 who wants to support Girl Scouts.

The more volunteers, the shorter the wait time for troop cookie managers picking up cookies. Volunteer for eight hours or more and get a special patch.

Opportunities exists at the Girl Scout Center, in Conroe and other areas of the council. To volunteer, send an email to cookies@sjgs.org.

Want to go a step further? Volunteer to run a cupboard and be a cupboard manager. The more cupboard managers we have, the easier it is for troop cookie managers to pick up additional cookies.

A cupboard manager is a dedicated volunteer who has agreed to store cookies in their home, or manage an outside facility stocked with Girl Scout cookies. Cookie cupboards store anywhere from 500 – 5,000 cases of cookies. The cupboard managers help a steady stream of volunteers with picking up additional cases of cookies. Cupboard managers should be available during the months of February and March, be available to receive cookie deliveries, have access to the internet and a computer/tablet and have some knowledge of managing inventory. Become a Troop Cookie Manager

Been thinking about helping out with your Girl Scout’s troop but aren’t sure where to start? Why not help out during the sweetest time of the year – cookie season! The troop cookie manager ensures the program goes smoothly for the troop each year, and we’re betting your troop leader would love a little extra help!

As troop cookie manager, this adult manages troop cookie funds, gathers permission forms, helps girls set and achieve their goals, picks up cookies from cookie cupboards and coordinates pick-up by girls. Because this position is so involved, we’ve found that the most successful troops have a troop cookie manager who is not one of the troop leaders.

(If one person has both roles, they’ll likely get burned out from the number of projects they have to keep organized.)

Take Cookie Basics Cookie Basics (formerly Troop Cookie Manager Training). The Cookie Program is the largest girl-led, entrepreneurial program in the nation. Topics covered in this one-and-a-half-hour presentation will include accessing Smart Cookies (the online business tool for cookies), placing the starting inventory order, managing the troop’s inventory and handling cookie funds. Girl Scout volunteers participate in many ways. Celebrate them! Even though our volunteers believe passionately in the mission to empower girls, they appreciate being recognized for their hard work. Say thank you.

GSSJC offers formal awards for volunteers who go above and beyond the expectations for their role and make significant contributions to our Girl Scout programs and council mission. Demonstrate your appreciation through one of the many opportunities below. Information about each award, the criteria, nomination and application forms, and procedures for nominating your deserving volunteers are provided in the next few pages as well as online in the Adult Recognitions Guide F-183 on the Forms Tab.

How to nominate a volunteer

Do you know an outstanding adult or community partner who is deserving of recognition? Use these easy steps below to get started.

Obtain the appropriate application form.

A complete nomination packet includes: • Nomination Application Form for individul, family or Community partner • Three letters of endorsement, one from you and two from other current members in good standing • Volunteer Service Record (F-122), one for each nominated adult. These forms should be found in Community files or with the individual volunteer Find these forms at www.gssjc.org. See helpful tips in our Adult Recognition Guide, F-183.

Fill out form completely and accurately.

Make sure you include how long the nominee has given service to GSSJC, and highlight specific contributions. Incomplete packets will not be accepted. F-122 for nominee is required.

Nominations are evaluated by what is written in the letters of endorsement and the candidate’s Volunteer Service Record.

The nomination should clearly state why the person’s work is noteworthy and above that expected for the position.

Include accomplishments, specifying the impact on the audience receiving the service. Provide details of accomplishments, not just a list of committees they are involved with.

Provide specific examples.

You may submit more than three letters of endorsement for one candidate, especially for the higher level awards. You may want to ask more than three people for endorsements to ensure you get three back in time for submittal.

Nominations cannot be considered if candidates have not completed training for positions requiring training.

Write a letter of endorsement and identify two additional registered adults who are in good standing (one may be a staff member) who know the nominee and will agree to write a letter of endorsement.

Hint: Make sure to include volunteers and staff whose endorsements will reflect each aspect of the nominee’s service (i.e. trainers, community volunteer, Council committee, etc.).

The nominee’s volunteer supervisor is a great resource. Self nomination will not be accepted.

Submitting F-122s for Adult Recognitions:

The Adult Volunteer Record (F-122) is a REQUIRED document for any adult recognition award nomination. Ideally, volunteer records are collected and compiled by your Girl Scout Community service team. They may also be obtained from any council committee on which that volunteer sits (see the staff partner or chair for that committee), from a fellow volunteer, or if necessary, from the volunteer directly.

National and Council Awards Appreciation Pin – For the candidate that has provided outstanding service to a geographic area or program delivery audience in a way that furthers the Council’s goals. The service goes beyond the expectations for the position. (F-54) Volunteer of Excellence – Recognizes volunteers who have contributed outstanding service while partnering directly with girls in any pathway to implement the Girl Scout Leadership Experience (GSLE) through use of the National Program Portfolio or who have contributed outstanding service in support of the Council’s mission delivery to girl and adult members. (F-54) Honor Pin – Candidate who has provided outstanding service in two or more geographic areas or program delivery audiences in a way that furthers the council’s goals. Candidate may have already received the Appreciation Pin, but it is not a criteria. The service goes beyond the expectations of the position. (F-54) Thanks Badge – This award is for the candidate who has provided outstanding service that benefits the total council or entire Girl Scout Movement. (F-54) Thanks Badge II – For the candidate who has already received the Thanks Badge and has continued to perform at the same high level for an extended period of time, increased their sphere of influence or used their skills to move into another field of endeavor. The outstanding service benefits the total council or entire Girl Scout Movement. (F-54) Outstanding Leadership Team Pin This Community award recognizes the outstanding efforts of any troop, special interest group or pathway leadership team who meets the specific criteria listed on the GSSJC application form, F-335.

Outstanding Volunteer Pin Intended to recognize contributions above and beyond expectations in Community, Region or special interest group for volunteer roles outside of troop leadership. This one-time award is reviewed by your local service team and fulfilled by Council Volunteer Experience Department.

President’s Award – Recognizes the Community who meets criteria points as outlined in the President’s Award Application form (F-76) within a geographic area or program delivery team. It demonstrates achievement of Council goals during a membership year. Documentation and materials supporting the nomination must be included. Dec. 15 deadline.

Ervan Chew Award – Recognizes individuals who demonstrate the values of the GSSJC Pluralism Statement within our community.

The Key Award – This is GSSJC’s own recognition instituted in 2006 upon the merger with Girl Scouts of South Texas.

This award is for the candidate that has given distinguished service to girls and adults in GSSJC. The service goes beyond the expectations of the position in one membership year. (F-54) Continuing Service – It is given to an outstanding volunteer who has already received the Thanks Badge and has continued to serve our Council above and beyond the position(s) they hold. (F-54) Lifetime Achievement – For candidate who has received the Thanks Badge II and continued to perform at the same high level for an extended period of time. Candidate has given outstanding service to our council above and beyond the position(s) held for many years. (F-54) Family Award – Recognizes adult family members who have contributed above and beyond the expectations of the positions they hold. For example: wife and husband, mother and adult daughter(s), grandparent and adult daughter(s), sisters (adults).

(F-57) Community Awards Certificate of Appreciation – For a community building, business, church or non-registered adult who has given service to the council/community for several years. (First level of Community Awards) Walnut Plaque – For a community building, business or non-registered adult who has given service to the council/community for many years.

The candidate may have received the Certificate of Appreciation, but it is not a requirement. (Second level of Community Awards.)

Laser Plaque – For a community building, business or non-registered adult who has given service to the Council/community for many years.

Membership and Years of Service pins

Membership Numerals – Recognizes the years an adult has been a Girl Scout member (girl plus volunteer adult years). There is a nominal fee for these pins. (F-56) Years of Service – Recognizes the years an adult has been a registered, active member of Girl Scouts. Given in increments of 5 years. (F-61)

If you are eligible for a Membership Numeral or Years of Service pin, let the Community administrators or their designee know. Communities will submit orders for the Membership Numeral and Years of Service pins to be presented at a Community/Region event or meeting. Any pin of 25 years and higher may be received at the Adult Recognition Event with advanced notice, see deadlines.

Tips for Troop Leaders: Rallying Your Troop Parents for Cookie Season

Cookie season will be here soon, and you’ll be feeling proud of your Girl Scout troop for rocking their goal setting conversation and committing to a cookie goal that’ll power their weekend camping trip this summer. But before your girls launch their cookie business, there's another group you need to rally: your troop’s parents and caregivers.

That doesn’t sound difficult–after all, most troop families want to be supportive–but what happens when you have parents who see the cookie program as just another task on their lengthy to-do list rather than an entrepreneurial experience for their cookie boss? “I started a new Daisy troop this year and the first thing my new co-leader asked me was ‘do we really need to sell cookies?’” explains Kat, a troop leader at the Girl Scouts Wisconsin-Badgerland council. “I don't think people outside Girl Scouts fully understand why we sell and all of the ways the girls benefit from the cookie program."

The cookie program is a team effort, and adult support plays a major part. If you’re looking for ways to motivate any apprehensive parents in your troop, GSUSA’s volunteer experts have the strategies you need to outline the importance of the experience.

Hold a cookie-specific meeting for parents and caregivers

Even if you discussed the cookie program at your first parent meeting, make time to reconnect with troop adults. “We hold a parent cookie meeting just before our initial orders are placed,” explains Kathy Wise, a troop leader with Girl Scouts Spirit of Nebraska. “We cover the family guide and any changes from the previous year and collect the prize selection sheets. Last year our fourth-grade Juniors discussed financial literacy and business skills and came up with a list of jobs such as marketing, sales, inventory control, and cashier. [With the parents] we discussed how the cookie program helps build skills then shared the list of jobs the girls came up with. Parents were more than happy to help their girls build these skills.”

“I try to have a 15-minute parent meeting to go through the basics, like a refresher course,” agrees Maranda Oliver of Girl Scouts Wisconsin-Badgerland. “I outline my expectations and the support I’m able to give. I make it clear that parents need to communicate with me: for instance, if something isn’t going right, [they need to] bring it to my attention right away or else the issue becomes much harder to correct, as with any business.”

Your troop parents will likely have more questions about what’s expected of them and their girls, so be sure to review the most frequently asked questions about the cookie program before this meeting. You can also let parents know at the meeting that you’re looking for some extra support.

Share your troop’s goal and how they’ll get there

Open the conversation by outlining the goal or experience the girls are working toward and talk about the girls’ decisionmaking process and that you’re proud of their ability to work as a team. “When people ask why they’re selling cookies, they can say ‘we’re building a butterfly garden’ or ‘we have a camping trip we’re hoping to take,’” says Maranda. “Families are much more supportive if they know where the cookie proceeds go; the same goes for customers and other members of your community!"

Once you’ve shared your troop’s vision, let the adults know what the goal means for their girl. “In our first year I had some very ambitious girls, but parents who were less than thrilled,” continues Maranda. “I wasn’t going to force them to do more than they were willing. I suggested a starting amount of 60 boxes, and many parents took the recommended amount.

Outline the immediate and long-term benefits of the cookie program

“I explain that the money from the cookie program funds the rest of the year's badges, programs, and events,” says Kat. "I also tell [the families] that the cookie program is not about the cookies or the money. Parents love to hear how the sale works—the girls set their own goals!

We purposely set low and high goals so the girls can reach some but work hard for others. Once parents hear how hands-on the sale is for their daughters and how they’ll learn how to make change and speak to customers and work as a team, they're much more willing to participate in the program.”

Have a “but wait, there’s more!” moment with the adults, and let them know they’ll see the cookie program’s impact long before their budding entrepreneur opens her first business or goes for her MBA. She’ll learn to manage money and allocate her after-school job savings wisely, for instance, and hone the relationship-building skills she needs to lead her classmates in a group project.

The five skills girls learn from the cookie program set them up for success in school, extracurriculars, and beyond; helping parents and caregivers understand the big picture goes a long way in building the support you need.

For the second year, Girl Scouts across GSSJC donated cookies purchased by customers back to first responders in their neighborhood. This initiative began following Hurricane Harvey as a way to say thank you to everyone who bravely assisted those in need across southeast Texas.

Troop #146008 donated nearly 50 boxes of cookies to the West University Fire Department to thank firefighters for all of their hard work in keeping citizens safe.

Troop #114149 donate Girl Scout cookies to precinct 4 Constables.

Troop #114182 delivered donated cookies to Houston Northwest Medical Center ER staff.

Girl Scout cookie delivery to the Webster Police Department.

Troop #118002 delivered 16 cases of cookies to Atascocita Fire Department 29.

The firefighters took the girls on a tour of the fire trucks and the mass casualty unit.

Troop #24033 delivered cookies to fire station 13.

Troop #105134 took cookie to the Todd Mission Police Department and Volunteer Fire Department. The girls had fun and the first responders we're surprised and very thankful.

Girl Scout Traditions We Love: Spotlight on Service

The holiday season is here, and one way we know you’ll see Girl Scouts celebrating is by giving back to their communities.

Around Thanksgiving and into December, troops often opt to do an activity that allows them to better their community. It ranges from collecting food for local food banks leading up to Thanksgiving to visiting retirement homes and singing holiday songs for residents.

Girl Scouting’s commitment to service is part of our roots and goes much deeper than a one-time activity though. It’s something built into our mission: we teach girls how to make the world a better place. Here are a few key ways that happens in Girl Scouting.

Service Projects

Service projects are one-time acts that allow a girl to better her community. They’re often planned by the troop, independent of any badgework, as a way to teach girls how to give back from a young age. In addition, Girl Scout Communities (a local network of troops within your geographical area) might plan larger service projects for all troops to join at the holidays. They might also collect donations at weekend campouts. Girl Scouts are always looking for ways to give back!

Take Action Projects

Take Action projects take the idea of service one step further. They are a chance for girls to partner with others in their community to solve a problem. Girls learn about getting to the root causes of issues, mobilizing and engaging community members and volunteers and striving toward creating lasting change in their world. An important component is to understand and address the cause of a problem. Girls must also make sure each project is sustainable and that the impact is measurable. These are often tied to Journey Awards girls earn as part of demonstrating the new skills they have learned.

Highest Awards

Girls who enjoy finding sustainable solutions to problems in their community are primed to earn Girl Scouting’s three highest honors: the Bronze, Silver and Gold Awards. Juniors are eligible to earn the Bronze Award, Cadettes the Silver Award and Seniors and Ambassadors the Gold Award.

Earning this honor is a type of Take Action project, but rather than working with her entire troop a girl works with a smaller team (Bronze and Silver) or independently (Gold) to solve a problem in her community. Less than five percent of girls who join Girl Scouts will earn the Gold Award, making it the most prestigious honor in our organization.

Through each of these service opportunities, today’s girls keep alive Juliette’s dream of girls working together to make the world a better place – and that’s a tradition well worth preserving. Girl Scouts have always understood the importance of nature in a child’s development. There are few things as impressionable as a girl’s first time to camp and spending that time with her friends. Troop camping is available to all troops with the right training to keep you safe and aware of proper troop camping procedures. If you’ve ever wondered how you can get your troop in camp year-round, here is what you need to know: Step one: Become camp certified • Reserving your day or overnight camp stay is easy–with the right training. GSSJC requires a camp certified registered adult volunteer to help troops prepare and accompany them when they go camping. A troop leader or other GSSJC registered volunteer may take the training to become the camp certified volunteer for the troop. To become camp certified, you must attend one three-hour planning session hosted during weekday evenings. Once you’ve completed your planning session, you must attend a full-day, on-site camp training.

• Once you have completed your planning session (referred to as the In Town), you attend the AT Camp training associated with the In Town training date. There are two options for camp training. Camp Certification that is a planning session plus a one day At Camp session. Or you can choose Camp Certification with Extra Experience that includes a planning session and an overnight stay at camp.

Step two: Earn your first aid certification • To attend camp with your troop, you are required to have at least one adult in your group who is first aid-certified.

GSSJC hosts monthly training for adults, but you can also become certified through another approved agency. We cannot accept expired certifications. Make sure to renew your certification every two years.

Step three: Schedule your stay

Once you’ve completed steps one and two, all that's left to do is pick a location and date. Troops select a spot by sending the F-127 form (available at gssjc.org under Forms) to campreservations@sjgs.org, along with copies of your troop first aid and camp certification cards. Please allow for five to seven business days for your request to be processed. Camp reservation payments are due two weeks after you receive confirmation and are non-refundable and non-transferrable.

Troop Camp reservation dates are provided two ways: • Monthly draw placement – All requests received by the first Monday of the month for placement three months out will be randomized and placed according to availability. See page two of the F-127 for appropriate placement month.

• First come, first placed (Camp Corner) – After initial monthly placement is complete, requests will be placed on a first come, first placed basis. These open spots are listed on the weekly Camp Corner email. To be added to this list, send an email to registration@sjgs.org.

• Tip: Make sure you have the right adult-to-girl ratio for your stay. You will learn all about this and additional planning considerations during your planning session.

The Many Faces of Girl Scouts: Isabel H. Features

Doer, determined and self-starter are just a few characteristics that describe a go-getter like Isabel Herrera. With role models like her mother, an active Girl Scout volunteer, and her older sister, a Girl Scout Senior, Isabel knows that being a Girl Scout means being a gogetter. “I wanted to join Girl Scouts because I wanted to be independent,” says Isabel. “Girl Scouts helped [me] take a risk, be independent and do things I thought I couldn’t do.”

During the 2017 Girl Scout Cookie Program, Isabel experienced an unforgettable moment that bolstered her belief that Girl Scouts can accomplish anything. Isabel took her family’s laundry basket, cleaned it and decorated it with handmade paper flowers and signs.

After filling the basket with cookie packages, Isabel showed it to her mother and asked if she could sell cookies.“I went out to sell cookies in my neighborhood with my mom and sister,” says Isabel. “I also took the city Metro rail.”

While Isabel’s enthusiasm, drive and creativity were impressive, what happened on the Metro rail was even more extraordinary.“We were on the Metro with my cart of cookies, and a man wanted to buy some,” says Isabel. “When he was buying them, he said to me that I was doing something good for my country. I was making my country bigger and better and would be successful in life because all girls who were Girl Scouts become successful.”

Inspired by the encounter, Isabel wrote a letter in Spanish to San Jacinto Council describing her experience and how it had impacted her.“It made me feel important,” says Isabel in the letter. “It motivated me to be more active, to help more people and to have goals and accomplish them.”

Though just a Brownie, Isabel aspires to become a doctor when she grows up to help other people.

When asked if being a Girl Scout has helped prepare her for the future, Isabel nodded. Yes, because I have goals and I have to work to accomplish those goals. It helps me be a leader in the future.”

Parents: How You Can Bring the Strength and Magic of Girl Scouts Home We’ve got your back when it comes to teaching your girl positive values! Read on for examples of the standards your girl agrees to through the Girl Scout Law, and simple ways to amplify them even more in your own family.

Be Honest Lying is a natural (and normal!) thing for kids to do, so it’s nearly inevitable that your girl will fib at some point. If your daughter has lied, calmly ask her what or who may have been hurt by it. If she’s too young to understand, walk her through how her actions might have affected others.

Be Fair When your girl identifies something that’s unfair, ask her to explain what a better solution would look like and how it would work. There may be several ways to solve the same problem, so help her think through as many as she can come up with and decide which one she thinks is the most fair for all involved.

Be Friendly and Helpful Encourage all family members to look for ways to help around the house. Rotate chores so everyone’s contributing equally and nothing’s seen as a “boy” or “girl” task. Your girl may not love trash day or dish duty, but it will give her pride in a job well done and build her appreciation for helpers in her life.

Be Considerate and Caring Model thoughtfulness for your girl by asking about her feelings and truly listening when she answers. Discuss the importance of

putting yourself in someone else’s shoes and trying to understand their point of view before deciding how to react in any given situation.

Be Courageous and Strong Talk to her about a time when you were nervous about speaking up for what you believed was right but did it anyway. Ask if she’s ever been in a similar situation and how it went, then remind her that sometimes we have to be brave to make a difference.

Be Responsible for What She Says and Does When you notice not-so-awesome behavior in your girl, take time to talk with her about it and understand what’s going on rather than simply punishing her for her actions. Talking about her actions and why she takes them will help her do better next time.

Congratulations Gold Award Girl Scouts The Girl Scout Gold Award represents the highest achievement in Girl Scouting; it recognizes girls in grades 9-12 who demonstrate extraordinary leadership through sustainable and measurable Take Action projects. Since 1916, girls have successfully pursued the highest award, an act that indelibly marks them as accomplished members of their communities and the world.

Ishika B. she led initiatives to 10 villages in India about the importance of filtered water and the negative effects unfiltered water could have on the individuals nutrition. She installed 11 remote water filters to help combat pollutants in the water. Ishika also led presentations at local schools on the importance of clean water.

Her project will have a long-lasting impact on these communities and she estimates her filters will help provide clean water to 1,000 – 1,500 people.

Emily H. created a self-started platform on latex allergies. As someone living with latex allergies herself, Emily connected others with valuable resources and information on how to live with latex allergies and shining a spotlight on this growing issue. She hosted a website, created a YouTube series entitled “Living Latex-Free” and hosted a booth at Pearland’s Paws in the Park event. Overall, her project has already reached 285 people and continues to grow.

Helen B. worked with local student volunteers to create a free SAT prep tutor program that targeted low-income students in her community. Her goal was to promote equal access to education.

Helen is passionate about finding a solution to education inequality and hopes her project also brings awareness to the growing gap between income-classes and their access to education.

Sarah H. helped inform her community about environmental conservation. In her project, Sarah created various displays and brochures she hosted at several places, such as her local library and the Armand Bayou Nature Center. Her informative brochures encouraged people to reconnect with nature by giving them information on local hiking trails, how to interact with the local wildlife and ways to conserve the environment.

Annika G. led and organized two separate three-hour clinics to help teach beginner through intermediate tennis skills to children. Prior to the clinics, Annika also led a presentation on preventative health and the importance of staying active.

Annika was inspired by her concerns for the growing obesity rate of children.

Ultimately, Annika planned on educating people on the matter and make a difference locally for the longterm health of the attendees and others.

Shelby H. let about 20 volunteers to help Willow Meadows Baptist Church in organizing storage, taking inventory and building a mobile collapsible wall for multipurposes. After Hurricane Harvey, the church lost many members due to relocation, and much of their storage was lost and in disarray.

Liana H. spearheaded a landscape renovation at the Hickory Slough Sportsplex. The area was known to be a tripping hazard because of various metal grates for plumbing access. This facility is used by more than 100 families for soccer leagues and other programs. After renovating the area, Liana presented information to children and families on park safety, stranger danger and distributed child ID kits at the local Friday concert events.

Kyncee H. created individual wildlife cameras that were to be mounted in wooden boxes and could be used to document both the known and unknown of Galveston’s wildlife.

The cameras, now stationed at the Artist Boat Reservation, went through several engineering prototypes before Kyncee found the correct design that could withstand the weather. Her project helped bring attention to the growing need for wildlife preservation and was a step forward in documenting more information about the environment.

Anna L. gave presentations to youth groups to raise awareness and educate about the importance of equine therapy, as well as its benefits and how individuals could volunteer locally with the non-profit Reining Strength Therapeutic Horsemanship. She also designed and constructed a flat bridge to be used by the local Special Olympics team, as well as built benches and planters to create a safe seating area for clients and families.

Features Rhea M. presented on the issues surrounding the endangered Monarch butterfly species, the challenges it faces during its year migration and why it is endangered. Rhea primarily focused her presentations towards educating middle schoolers about the declining monarch population and the effect that would have on the ecosystem. She gave four presentations to middle schoolers, one presentation to YEC members, and one final presentation at an Earth Day festival.

Niara P. collected and organized resources and information career paths or college after high school. Niara, who believes that college is not the only option that students have, also created a website and met with school counselors to help students become connected with and informed about other potential options they could see after high school graduation. Her project helped shed light on the other possibilities students could undertake to help find a rewarding and prosperous career path.

Madeline R. organized a furniture drive program in partnership with the Society of St. Vincent de Paul. Madeline’s mission was to help those who were in need in her community. She connected with other local parishes and organized several drives that collected more than seven truckloads of furniture. In total, she estimates more than 70 families benefited from the drive. She hopes the drive continues so that they may have a steadier steam of donations to help even more people in need.

Emma S. created and led a presentation to raise seizure awareness, as well as educate people on how to respond to them. She worked with local principals and nurses at three different schools. As someone who suffers from a seizure disorder, Emma’s project revolved around educating the populace on her disorder and how to properly help those who are suffering an episode. She also created an instructional video on the matter and distributed it to her local schools.

Chloe S. coordinated a life skills event for high school and middle school students. The event focused on crucial life skills such as finances, interview skills, mental and physical health, cooking, and even car maintenance.

Chloe met with local specialists and teachers in those respective fields, advertised volunteer opportunities and led the event in April. The event helped teach valuable skills in adult responsibilities for students who were about to step out into the college world.

Abigail S. created a Buddy Day in conjunction with the Down Syndrome Association of Houston. The day consisted of three different activities: an art session where participants made designs on a wooden trivet board, a cooking activity to prepare lunches that were shared, and an afternoon of square dancing. The event connected those affected by down syndrome with “buddies” that accompanied them through all the events. Abigail’s event helped created long-lasting friendships with lots of fun, laughter and creativity.

Jackie S. curated and organized a worship hour for special needs kids and teens to feel welcomed at Houston’s First Baptist Church. It was a two-hour long event that provided the attendees time to sing, dance, and learn in a strong Christian environment. The event also provided them with a safe environment where they could express themselves and be open about who they were. The church plans to continue the program.

Lawren S. organized and executed her project called “Bark in the Park Dog Fest” which was meant to address the overcrowding in local animal shelters.

The event showcased animals who were available for adoption in a puppy parade, collected donations such as dog and cat food, as well as raised awareness for the need to adopt and volunteer at local shelters.

Hannah T. facilitated a drive to college dental care items that were donated to children in low income areas of her community. Hannah also led volunteers in events that helped teach youth on proper dental care, access to dental brochures, and even created a dental care video. Her valuable resources remain available to community and will continue to provide valuable information to educate children on the importance of dental care.

Bronze and Silver Awards Around the Council

Troop #152007 donated patrol gear to the HISD Police K-9 unit as their Bronze Award. The girls raised money by collecting items for a garage sale.

They met K9 Aries when they were Daisies and he came out and put on a demonstration during a meeting. They learned he needed a harness to go to patrol school and a med kit to carry for emergencies so they decided to take action!

Troop #117162 earned their Bronze Award by building and stocking a little free library donated to a local elementary school to promote literacy.

Azelin Medrano from Troop #3450 completed her Silver Award at Claiborne West Park by revitalizing trails and signs making it easier for hikers to identify hiking trails.

Troop #134007 earned their Bronze Award by learning about Harvester Ants and securing, painting and posting markers for the ant mounds at Coastal Heritage Preserve, Galveston.

Troop #157117 painted murals so people can identify Sugar Land Animal Shelter better. The director received our donation to the shelter and the troop took a picture in front of one of the mural.

Peyton L. decided to address to issue of Period Preparedness for young girls for her Bronze Award project.

She collected makeup/toiletry bags and stuffed them all with a variety of pads and liners, a couple of feminine wipes and a new pair of underware.

She donated them to the nurse's office, a place where girls go for supplies if needed. Peyton already plans to continue this project for her school and a neighboring school.

Audrey Bonnette from Troop #3450 completed her Silver Award at Claiborne West Park by making a bird identification board for park.

Vivienne R. from Troop #25001 earned the Silver Award by hosting education tables at the Harris County Animal Shelter to help raise awareness of senior dog adoptions.

Amanda from Troop #15510 earned her Bronze Award by greasing squeaky park swings. The squeaky noise, when measured, sometimes reached higher than city traffic! A little grease appropriately picked for each swing and voila! Peace and tranquility!

Camp Pryor Camp Whispering Pines Archery(A) $8: Archery is available for Brownies (girls in second grade) or older. Sessions are now one and one half hours! Up to 12 girls per session can learn archery basics and spend some time practicing their aim. These archery sessions are instructor-led (meaning an instructor will be provided for your group.) Taste of Canoeing(C) $20: Canoeing is a great team-building activity and an enjoyable and relaxing way to experience the outdoors. Love, Hug and Groom(L) $6: Love, Hug and Groom is a non-riding activity to introduce girls of all ages to horse care. Girls will receive a barn tour, introduction to horse care, and a hands-on grooming opportunity with camp horses.

A, C A Horseback Riding(R) $25: Horseback riding is available on Saturdays and Sundays for Juniors through Ambassadors.

Rides are for one hour, and take place in either the arena or on a trail, depending on the skill of the riders. Girls must arrive 30 minutes before their scheduled ride time. Appropriate attire includes long pants and boots with a smooth sole and 1/2 inch heels. Boots are available for ride time. Helmets are provided.

Limit of 12 girls per session. Session Times: Saturday at 9 a.m., 10 a.m., 11 a.m., 2 p.m., 3 p.m. and 4 p.m., Sunday at 9 a.m. and 10 a.m.

Hikes with Henry and Friends(H) $6: If you want a fun way to introduce your girls to camp during the day, consider taking a guided hike. Foresters Henry Steitz and John Ross and a group of dedicated volunteers conduct hikes that are both fun and informative. You haven’t really seen camp until you have toured it with these guys! These sessions are approximately two hours each and are for all ages. Cost includes a patch. Session Times: 10 a.m. – noon.

Swimming(S) $5: Need to cool off? Take a dip in the camp pool! Swimming time slots are available for one hour on Saturday only, for girls of all ages. Note, these sessions are pool fun time and free swim. During these swimming sessions a lifeguard will be provided for your group. It is not necessary to provide your own lifeguard for these sessions. Council Lifeguard Session Times: Saturday at 1 p.m., 2 p.m., 3 p.m., 4 p.m.

Archery Advanced Archery

Girls who wish to participate in advanced archery may try our new On Target sessions or join the Archers In Motion Special Interest Group and register for monthly coaching and challenge sessions. Read on below for the two options for registration.

Girls who have not registered and paid for Girl Scout membership and Special Interest Group membership may not participate in AIM. On Target (New!) Girls ages 8 and up who have tried archery before but are not yet certain they wish to participate as a member of the Special Interest Group may attend On Target sessions. On Target sessions are held monthly and include instruction.

Girls shooting levels in On Target are fun and not recorded for JOAD. Each session is two hours and include all necessary equipment. Troops may register for On Target, but this is an individual activity. Adults are not allowed on the range during shooting sports and will be provided direction on waiting areas.

Archers In Motion and JOAD Club Archers In Motion (AIM) is a Special Interest Group for girls ages 8 and older. To participate in the monthly AIM program, girls must be a current Girl Scout member, register for the annual Special Interest Group membership and select/register the monthly dates they wish to attend shooting practice. The club meets once a month so that members may shoot 36 arrows, attempting specific JOAD and GSSJC shooting levels.

Levels are based on age and distance. There is also instruction on the JOAD Xperience program each month.

Backpacking Backpacking Orientation

Backpacking Orientation covers all the basic knowledge required for troops and individuals wishing to go backpacking.

Don’t worry about being the only girl in your troop or an individually registered girl interested in backpacking – you won’t be the only one! You will be in a group of new friends for the weekend.

You will learn how to pack a backpack, care for a tent and cook on your own personal stove. You will transfer your camping gear to your backpack and then hike two miles to the campsite and set up your tent where you will be spending the evening for a real, mini backpacking adventure! Enjoy the campfire, savor dinner on your own stove, and settle in for the night in your tent on the ground under the stars. After packing up your gear the next morning, you will hike two miles back to the main part of camp, say goodbye to your new friends and count down the days until your first weekend backpacking trip!

After successfully completing orientation, participants will earn the GSSJC Backpacking Certification and can accompany any of the existing council backpacking groups on weekend trips.

Girls who complete this orientation will be able to join the Backpacking Special Interest Group.

Camp Letterboxing

Letterboxing is a cross between a treasure hunt, art, navigation and exploring interesting, scenic places as you follow clues to a hidden box containing a stamp and a logbook. It’s like hiking with a prize at the end!

There are letterboxes hiding at Girl Scout camps waiting for you the next time you go camping. We have to set up new boxes as weather and curious critters make the boxes disappear. Geocaching

Join the fun with this high-tech treasure hunting game played throughout the world by adventure seekers equipped with GPS devices. GSSJC has units available for rental. The cost is $10 per week with a $25 deposit per unit. Use the units locally, in some state parks or even in some of our camps.

Camp Director Certification Training

Are you interested in being a day camp director, co-director or assistant director for your Community? Join us to learn how to run a day camp or twilight camp, including registration, state license and health inspection requirements, budgeting, staff training, volunteer management and much more. This course is required annually for all day and twilight camp directors. Return directors may opt to take either the full training or the update course.

Family Camping

Spend a weekend with your family at camp. Join us for fishing, outdoor skills, archery, crafts, hiking and fun in the outdoors. And, of course, there will be s’mores and singing around the campfire on Saturday night.

A list of standard Girl Scout guidelines (appropriate fuels, rules for conduct, etc.) will be included in the confirmation attachments. Attending this event, you and all participants attending with you agree to abide by the updated F-05 Family Camping Guidelines as well as operational procedures outlined in the F-433 under Camping - Family Camping (page 4).

Families with two or more children under 5 years of age must have at least two adults in the group. Families with four or more children must have at least two adults. Large families (more than six children attending) should consult with the outdoor experience department to determine appropriate adult ratios for safety. Anyone under the age of 18 is a child. Families are responsible for the health, safety and supervision of their children at all times while at camp.

We encourage entire families (even male siblings) to attend. Camp training is not required for this event. When registering your additional children, please disregard the automated gender categories.

Bring: Personal camping equipment (suggested packing list available after registration) and unit roster from the family camp information attached after registration is completed.

Families must bring and prepare their own meals. Also bring permission slip, medical form and adult emergency form.

All registrations include accommodations in a platform tent, which sleeps up to four people or families may choose to pitch their own tent. Families may also upgrade to a cabin or dorm for an additional fee, if available.

Finca Tres Robles is Houston’s only private farm inside the loop.

Girls will enjoy seeing herbs, fruits and vegetables straight from their garden.

Earn a badge at Matagorda Bay Nature Park. This 1,333-acre park and nature preserve is located at the mouth of the Colorado River on the Matagorda Bay peninsula. Girls will enjoy two miles of Gulf of Mexico beachfront, birdwatching in coastal marshes and wetlands.

Wild About Wolves

Juniors can complete the Animal Habitats badge and Seniors can complete the Voice for Animals. This facility is a volunteer-run nonprofit that cares for non-releasable wolves and wolf-hybrids in a safe, loving environment. The sanctuary is also committed to educating the public on conservation efforts and the downside to owning exotic pets. This session includes a facility tour to meet the animals that call this place home as well as the badge workshop with a unique twist and focus on these majestic creatures.

The Moscow Ballet presents “Great Russian Nutcracker”

The holiday season reignites with the famous touring production of the Moscow Ballet's Great Russian Nutcracker.

Enjoy the timeless classic ballet featuring Clara, Sugar Plumb Fairy and the Nutcracker Prince in this magic adventure. After the performance, Girl Scouts will get to meet one of the star ballerinas from the show. Girl scouts, siblings and parents are invited to the amazing performance of the Nutcracker ballet.

General Activities Girl Scout Leadership Institute (GSLI)

Texas Children’s Hospital welcomes Girl Scouts to explore a variety of career opportunities from an administrator or researcher to a medical professional. Girls will first receive an overview of the hospital and hear from the executive roles of these female leaders. Next, girls will shadow a female executive and participate in tours including a research lab, mission control and clinical care. Lastly, girls will debrief as a group on what interested them about children’s health care.

Create an Ornament for the GSSJC Christmas Tree

Get in the holiday spirit by participating in GSSJC’s Christmas tree at the Houston Museum of Natural Science. It is free to view the trees, so girls can visit the tree and try to spot their ornament. Ornaments should fit this year’s theme, Holiday of Giving. How creative can you be? Perhaps hearts or hands or maybe something that represents what you would give to someone in need. All ornaments should have a string loop for hanging. My Dream Life

In this interactive adventure inspired by the Life board game, girls will rotate through simulations of the DMV, a bank, a career fair and a vacation. At the DMV the girls will create their own driver license complete with their photo. At the bank, girls will practice opening a bank account. Next, girls will have the opportunity to explore several different professions at the career fair with hands-on activities. Finally, they will celebrate with a well-earned vacation that will include a snack and activities. A fun patch and swag are included.

Red Cross Babysitting Training

This training covers everything from the business of babysitting (advertising, interviewing, charging, budgeting) to proper activities while on the job (developmental stages for kids of all ages, activities to do with the kids, etc). It also covers how to handle behavioral problems and what to do in an emergency.

Although some basic information on what to do will be included, this is not a first aid/CPR/AED course. It completes the Red Cross babysitter certification, not the Girl Scout badge.

Doll Donation Drive for Babysitting Training

At each Red Cross babysitting training certification workshop, participants are asked to bring a doll with them. We would like to build our own supply of dolls to ensure all girls can participate, even if they don’t have a doll. Please donate human baby dolls that fit a size 1 or 2 diaper. (Please do not bring dolls that are that are small enough for a newborn diaper.)

Join us in American Heart Month as Girl Scouts celebrate with the Texas Heart Institute. Girls will learn the importance of staying fit for heart health with robot "Cool-E" of Project Heart fame while exploring heart anatomy, the cardiovascular system, healthy eating, and exercise. While the girls are having fun with games and activities, the adults will be able to learn the Project Heart curriculum that can be implemented with the girls. Juniors will work towards their Staying Fit badge and Brownies will work towards their My Best Self.

November: Greens Bayou Paddle Tour This month, girls will tour the beautiful Greens Bayou Eagle Trail - a wide, deep water paddle trail surrounded by nature on both sides. This session will be led by an American Canoe Association-certified instructor and is suitable for both beginners and seasoned paddlers alike. Kayaking session will be followed by optional lunch. Registration includes kayak, paddle and life jacket, as well as lunch, a T-shirt and a patch.

Online Gold Award Orientation

The Gold Award Orientation provides girls and adults with: a comprehensive overview of the Gold Award steps and forms, tools for identifying and developing Gold Award projects that fall within the national guidelines, and GSSJC’s process for Gold Award applicants.

The Gold Award Orientation is required for girls pursuing their Gold Award and has moved online! The online orientation is broken into sections, takes approximately 1.5 hours to complete, but does not need to be finished in one sitting. Girls may also refer back to it after it’s been completed. Girls are encouraged to complete one Senior or Ambassador Journey before attending orientation.

We have two locations and many opportunities for girls to experience horse activities, as well as chances for older girls and adults to serve girls while working with horses and having fun at the same time!

Safety first! All equine programs are staffed with volunteer adults and older girls who have had council training in safe handling of horses and riders. Our program is based on the skills and safety guidelines of ACA, American Camp Association, and CHA, Certified Horsemanship Association.

What to wear: Long pants and socks, shirt with sleeves covering the shoulders. Helmets and boots are available. Girls bringing their own helmets must show a SEI certification label; boots must be smooth-soled with at least a half inch heel. Lug soles are not allowed. Girls should bring a bandana to wear beneath the helmet.

Volunteer! Want to help with the program? Every potential adult who wishes to become involved in the equitation program must have a completed volunteer application, have an approved criminal background check on file and be a registered Girl Scout in good standing prior to attending the equitation training for adults.

Deadline: This deadline is to ensure that there are enough volunteers to present the program. If you attempt to register after the deadline, your registration will not be accepted. The girls and adults who deliver the program are all dedicated volunteers whose time must be considered.

SPURS at Misty Meadows Ranch

Think Like an Engineer for Daisies Badge Workshop

In this workshop, Daisies will learn what engineers are and what they do. Girls get the chance to build a fairy house, puff mobile, and use critical thinking to span a canyon. This workshop is hosted by the Society of Women Engineers, so they will get to meet and talk to females in the engineering field as well. Girls complete all Journey requirements except the Take Action project and receive the Think Like an Engineer award.

Inventor Badge Workshop

Do you ever wonder what it takes to come up with a new kind of phone or a new way to power a lightbulb? This workshop will help you discover how inventors make new things! The best part will be that you get to become an inventor yourself while you discover creative ways to think and experiment.

Mechanical Engineering Day

Work with professionals at Lone Star College to work through the design process and create different builds. Girls will brainstorm, design, build and test creations like a roller coaster, race car or paddle boat, depending on their level. There will be separate sessions for each badge, but girls can attend all three.

A badge will be earned and provided in each session.

Room Makeover Workshop

Discover design concepts and fix-it tactics needed to turn a simple space into a creative statement! Rice University and the Rice Chapter of the Society of Women Engineers invite Juniors to spend a day on the Rice University campus. Activities include making several kinds of polymer, building their own bridges and paper airplanes, exploring chemistry and directing robots through coding.

Girl Scouts have been learning about woodworking for more than 100 years, and now you can too.

Destination Orientation

What are you doing for summer 2020? It could include spending a week looking at the stars at the Pine Mountain Observatory in Oregon, sailing a tall ship on Lake Erie, catching waves in Costa Rica, hiking through the Swiss Alps, playing with pandas in China or taking a tropical adventure through Thailand. Reserve Rangers Needed

GSSJC is looking for adult men and women age 21 years and older to serve as reserve rangers in our camps on weekends. If you enjoy the outdoors and the camping experience, we need you.

We started the reserve ranger corps in 1989 to extend staff/volunteer partnerships to the camp environment. Qualified, trained adult volunteers spend a weekend at a camp of their choice, assisting the staff ranger on duty with troop/event check-in, routine requests for services, answering campers’ questions, check-out and acting as the steward of the council’s camp property.

No experience is needed; however, all applicants must pass a criminal background check, be camp trained and first aid, CPR and AED certified to be considered for this high-profile camp position. The Facilities and Services department will pay for the two trainings if you have not taken them before. We provide a weekend orientation which includes an overview of the duties and on-the-job training from an experienced reserve ranger.

We are recruiting individuals with a friendly and caring attitude. Our reserve rangers serve as role models for the adults and girls using our camp facilities. The attitude and demeanor of a reserve ranger can have a lasting impact on a person’s camping experience. Our reserve rangers are personally committed to ensuring the safety of adults and girls using the camp facilities.

Reserve rangers stay in separate, private quarters at each camp. Each facility is climate controlled. Reserve rangers are volunteers and do not receive a salary; however, we offer a stipend of $65 to offset personal out-of-pocket gas and food expenses incurred when on duty for a weekend. What was the strongest hurricane to hit Texas?

No other hurricane has made landfall in Texas with the intensity of Hurricane Carla on Sept. 11, 1961.

T e ur rivia Carla was the most intense Nat hurricane to make landfall on the Texas coast in the 20th century and the second most intense in recorded history only to the Indianola hurricane of 1886. Carla was the last of six hurricanes in the 20th century to make landfall on the Texas coast as a category 4 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson scale with sustained winds stronger than 130 MPH. Carla ranks as the ninth most intense hurricane to affect the United States since 1851.

Tips for Colder Weather Camping During Winter Months

You and your Girl Scout friends need to be prepared for colder weather when staying at one of our beautiful camps during the winter months. Check the local weather a few days before you travel to camp to help you prepare for the outdoors. Girl Scout camps are usually 10 to 15 degrees colder than city temperatures.

Staying nice and warm is easy when you follow these helpful tips.

Dress properly and layer up. Wear clothes that keep you warm. Start with leggings or polyester thermal underwear as your base layer. Avoid wearing cotton clothing since it does not wick moisture and may drop your body temperature.

Moisture-wicking materials such as merino wool, polyester and polypropylene are designed to redistribute moisture via capillary action, whereas cotton becomes easily saturated much like a sponge.

Pack a scarf or neck gaiter that you can raise and lower easily to regulate your body temperature. Take a lightweight jacket that is waterproof and breathable. Fleece or wool stockings caps are good and can be made windproof when covered with a detachable hood. The warmest and best socks are merino wool (not itchy) or wicking polyester socks made for hiking. Your boots should be waterproof or water-repellent, especially if you plan on hiking through wet woods.

Pack a pair of gloves. Keep your hands warm and dry by wearing a good pair of gloves.

Keep your ears warm and dry by wearing protective headwear, like a hat, earmuffs or headband.

Make the most of the sunshine to keep you warm throughout the day. Whether you stay with us in a cabin, treehouse or platform tent, be sure to close any windows, window shades or tent flies to keep the chilly wind outside.

Stay hydrated. Drink plenty of water and fluids even if you’re not thirsty. Drink water (warm or cold) or some hot tea or hot chocolate.

Wear layered clothing to bed. Warm pajamas may not be enough to keep you warm. Put on what you’ll most likely be wearing in the morning before you go to bed. Choose a sleeping bag with a temperature rating that closely matches the indoor temperature where you’ll be sleeping.

Most camping bags feature a temperature rating between +15 degrees and +50 degrees. Select a sleeping bag with a temperature rating a bit lower than the lowest temperature you expect to encounter.

Girl Scouts of San Jacinto Council believes every girl should have the opportunity to be a Girl Scout regardless of her family’s ability to pay, and that the cost of the membership fee or vest should never stand in the way of her reaching her full potential. Each year, approximately one third of our girl members experience Girl Scouting through our Community Outreach program, which places paid staff in schools and community and detention centers to deliver Girl Scouting to girls in underserved communities. In addition, we provide more than $700,000 in financial aid to help girls participate in Girl Scouting.

Leave a Legacy Outdoor Gift

Girl Scouts has a long and successful history of getting girls outdoors. In fact, many Girl Scouts say that “camping trips” and other outdoor activities are one of the best things about their Girl Scout experience. Connecting with nature in a girl-led setting is an important benefit of belonging to Girl Scouts. When girls spend quality time outdoors and increase their exposure to nature, they thrive physically, emotionally, and intellectually.

Please consider joining our council-wide “Outdoor Enthusiast Planned Giving Initiative.” This initiative is designed to ensure that future generations of girls in GSSJC benefit from quality outdoor experiences in Girl Scouting by making a planned gift to benefit the future growth and maintenance of camps in our council.

Making a planned gift can be very simple. You can name the council as a partial beneficiary in your will. You can opt to leave a flat amount or a percentage of a specific asset, and there is NO minimum requirement. And everyone who makes a planned gift to GSSJC is automatically a member of the Juliette Gordon Low Society.

Troop #127014 read to the cats at CAP and donated blankets.

Troop #126166 used some of their earned cookie money to purchase, assemble and donate activity bags and treasure box items to Texas Children’s West Campus.

The fourth grade troop at St. John Paul II Catholic School donate toys and clothes for Texas Children's Hospital. They took inventory of supplies the hospital needed, made a list based on their budget and shopped at Target to purchase them. It was the final step in earning their Agent of Change Journey Award.

Troop #114149 volunteered as angels for the Relay of Life.

Scrapbook Troop #132017 toured KHOU and learned what it was like to be a reporter.

The meteorologist show them how he broadcast the news in front of a green screen. This was part of the Media Journey that they completed this year.

Daisy Troop #112118 visited the Jersey Village Fire Department.

Troop #28125 graduated in 2019. Most have been in the troop since first grade. All the girls earned the Bronze Award with some going on to earn the Silver and Gold!

Troop #114071 slept over on the Tall Ship Elissa in Galveston.

Scrapbook Troop #134007 used their cookie money to visit San Antonio in June.

The Alamo, Fiesta Texas and the Natural Bridge Caverns were a few of the places visited.

Staff members Sandra Johnson and Dacia Idom came to tour the Coloney Creek Community's day camp. The theme for camp this year was The Greatest Girl Scout Show, complete with a cotton candy treat for all campers at the end of camp.

Troop #134127 enjoyed their trip to Camp WindA-Mere where they slept in a tee pee and learned camp skills.

Raising Awesome Girls

Six Truths That’ll Make Your Holidays Happier You’ve seen the holiday movies filled with happy family gatherings, hot cocoa–fueled heart to hearts and alarmingly good-looking strangers coming together to bring joy to the world. They’re fun, festive and—at least for many of us—pure fantasy.

In real life, the end-of-year parties and presents often come with a lot of pressure. So much so that one out of every three adults says their stress levels go up during the holidays. And if you’re feeling a bit frazzled? Chances are your girl is, too.

“Kids are super intuitive and pick up on the moods of those closest to them,” says Girl Scouts’ developmental psychologist Dr. Andrea Bastiani Archibald. “So if you want your girl to have a happy, relaxed holiday, one of the best things you can do is give yourself a bit of a break—literally AND figuratively.”

If that sounds easier said than done, read up on these six holiday truths that’ll make everybody’s holiday a little happier.

1. Quality time is a trap: In theory, planned quality time is awesome. It’s a chance for you and your loved ones to make special memories together that will last a lifetime. But the truth is, the more you try to plan a picture-perfect moment, the more disappointed you (and your girl!) might feel if something goes wrong. “It might be the memories of the relaxed, happy, you-being-you moments—like singing a silly song on the way to the mall or just snuggling on the couch watching a movie that she treasures most in the years to come,” says Archibald.

2. Perfect is the enemy of done: Fact: the two and a half hours you’re spending trying to make your snowman cookies look Pinterest-perfect could be spent dreaming and scheming with your girl. Nobody’s saying you should flake out on the holiday bake sale (it’s for a good cause!), but there’s no need to pretend you’re on set of the Food Network’s latest holiday bake-off. Same concept goes for elaborate holiday cards, giftwrapping and all the other trimmings. Sometimes “good enough” really is best!

3. Traditions aren’t set in stone: Do some of your holiday traditions feel a bit tired or tedious? Rethink them! “If your girl has aged out of an activity she loved in the past, talk it over with her to see if there’s something else she’d rather spend her time on,” suggests Dr. Bastiani Archibald. Check in with your family, then make a plan for what you want to keep on your holiday calendar and which things you might want to lovingly leave in the past.

4. Overspending is never a good look: Giving to others is often the best part of the holidays but spending more than what your budget allows will only cause financial hardship in the new year–and set a poor example for your girl. Set a better example for your girl by setting a budget and sticking to it.

Better yet? Get her involved in planning how you’ll spend your holiday budget. She’ll have fun playing holiday elf and gain some valuable financial know-how in the process!

5. The magic of the season does not include mind reading: So many parents—especially moms—take on the holiday chores and planning single-handedly and then end up too tired to fully enjoy the festivities themselves. Sound like you? Take a step back, assess your team (kids count!) and delegate. Spelling out specific tasks will clarify roles, get everything done faster and give everyone a sense of ownership and pride over the family’s holiday experience.

6. It’s the thought that counts, but stop counting those thoughts: Chances are you’re already raising your daughter to know that it’s the thought that counts. Now take that idea one step further and show her how to stop keeping score altogether. Not sure what that means?

Imagine you sent holiday cards to 25 people and only got 10 back. Instead of complaining and wishing you could take back the 15 “extra” cards you sent, recognize that some families might have more on their plates than others and be happy that you took time to share some holiday happiness. Sending well wishes and giving gifts is meant to be about generosity and caring, not competition.
