Welcome to the 2022 cookie program! Every year, thousands of girls across our council get ready to participate in one of our country’s most anticipated times of the year – Girl Scout Cookie season! The cookie program is about so much more than cookies. It’s about the girls and supporting their leadership journey. It’s about providing troops with funds to pay for activities or service projects that make our world a better place. And for our council, it’s about ensuring Girl Scouting continues to thrive in our community. Thank you for participating in this time-honored tradition. If you have more questions about the cookie program, see gssjc.org/cookies, the Cookie Online Community, or contact cookies@sjgs.org.

Why should my Girl Scout sell cookies?

•

Hi! I’m your mascot for the 2022 cookie season! Can’t wait to get started on this year’s program. See page 8 on how you can earn a stuffed version of me!

5 Skills

Want to know a secret? The cookie program isn’t about cookies. It’s all about your Girl Scout. The cookie program supports her ability to learn, grow, and thrive through all of life’s adventures. When she’s participating in the cookie program, here’s what she’s actually doing: • She’s developing 5 Skills—goal setting, decision making, money management, people skills, and business ethics—to apply to her future. • These skills transfer to other areas of her life, like becoming more responsible with her allowance, making a decision about college or developing leadership skills that’ll turn her into the next all-star female CEO. • She’s raising proceeds for her troop to do great things, like go camping, fund a service project, or attend a badge workshop. • She’s paying it forward and making the Girl Scout experiences possible for ALL girls in our council. Proceeds also go toward maintaining camp properties, keeping activity fees affordable, and helping girls in undeserved areas participate in Girl Scouts.

3

Goal Setting— Girls learn how to set goals to meet deadlines, plan for achieving a goal, change actions when necessary, and work with others to achieve goals in a group environment. Decision Making— Girls learn how to compare different choices, explain their reasons for reaching their decision, and consider others’ input when making group decisions. Money Management— Girls learn how to count money and make change, create and follow a budget, and distinguish the difference between wants and needs. People Skills— Girls learn how to be comfortable talking to and being around new people and develop better communication skills to share their message, goals and ideas. Business Ethics— Girls learn to set schedules, keep commitments and work with customers.

Important dates

The scoop on starting inventory orders

NEW DATE! January 14 Troop orders are due. Be sure your troop cookie manager has your Starting Inventory Order before this date. Locate the Parent SIO Worksheet on gssjc.org/cookies.

Ask your troop cookie manager how your Girl Scout can qualify for the Starting Inventory Order reward. Unsure what to order? Check out the Parent Starting Inventory Order Worksheet (found on gssjc.org/ cookies) to determine the best order for your Girl Scout. She will not want to miss out on this year’s limited edition 100-year anniversary pin and mini koala backpack keychain.

Link to recording will be announced in early January. February 3 – 12 The cookies are here! Cookie deliveries begin February 12 It’s cookie time! First day of the sale February 18 Cookie booth sales start just in time for National Girl Scout Cookie Weekend.

Good News! Both the Koala-theme mini keychain and the limited edition 100th anniversary pin will be distributed at delivery if each registered girl in the troop averages 150 packages or more for their Starting Inventory Order.

March 31 It’s a wrap! Last day of the 2022 Cookie Sale For more information go to gssjc.org/cookies or abcsmartcookies.com.

Ways to sell cookies Whatever way you choose to participate in the cookie program, mark your calendars for National Girl Scout Cookie Weekend which is scheduled for Feb. 18 – 20. People will be on the lookout for Girl Scout Cookies that weekend so it is an especially great time for booth sale and Walkabouts. Below is a list of different ways to sell cookies in 2022. For more information, go to gssjc.org/cookies. Contactless selling– Technology provides contactless options for participation in the cookie program, including a girl’s Smart Cookie online store, other online platforms such as Zoom, and virtual cookie booths. Booths– Girls are permitted to set up traditional, troop secured booths, and lemonade stands to sell cookies to customers. All safety guidelines and GSSJC COVID-19 protocols must be followed. For the complete list of the council’s COVID-19 protocols, see gssjc.org. Door-to-door– Did you know that door-to-door sales remain one of the most effective ways to sell cookies? In a recent national study, 78% of customers who were not approached during a cookie sale stated they would have purchased two to four boxes if asked. Be sure to follow the safety and COVID guidelines specifically for in-person/door-to-door sales. Walkabouts– This is an organized version of door-to-door sales in which Girl Scouts go through a specific neighborhood to sell cookies. It’s an especially fun way for troops to sell together, with different pairs of girls taking different streets, etc. If everyone participating wears a Girl Scout T-shirt or vest, Walkabouts can create a lot of good energy and visibility.

When can my Girl Scout sell cookies

Lemonade Stands and Parent and Me Booths

The first day your Girl Scout can sell cookies is Feb. 12. With the 2022 Super Bowl LVI being held on Feb. 13, it will be a popular weekend for your family, friends, and neighbors to support your Girl Scout by purchasing America’s favorite cookies.

Girls and parents from the same household may set up a lemonade stand booth outside their residence, i.e., on their own residential property. All safety guidelines and COVID-19 protocols must be followed. Depending on the neighborhood, this type of booth may require approval from HOA or property management.

Since GSSJC has moved to a direct sale, customers can enjoy their treats immediately—and you and your Girl Scout will not have to make a second trip to deliver and collect payment.

Tips and tools for selling cookies 1. Ask friends and family to buy or donate Girl

Girls can use yard signs, official Girl Scout tablecloths, or handmade signs to draw attention to their table to sell cookies. Girls can also advertise their URL through a QR Code to reach customers who may want to purchase at a later date.

Scout Cookies.

2. Review last year’s order cards and contact your reliable customers.

3. Do residential door-to-door sales, set up a

We will also continue Parent and Me booths. Parent and Me booths are listed in Smart Cookies under Booth Reservations. If the troop is unable to staff a booth reservation, the troop cookie manager can approve an individual Girl Scout and her parent to set up the booth. This is appropriate only for low to medium traffic booth locations.

The abbreviations are for the cookies being sold this year. See cookie lineup on page 2 for names. Answers on page 9.

Koala TP rolls Directions: Start by painting your koala. Grey is a nice choice if you want your koala to look real! Paint on the cute features, like their white stomach and their cute nose. Don’t forget to glue on some fluffy ears next.

Materials: Toilet paper rolls Paint + paint brushes Pom Poms for ears Glue Markers Anything else you want to decorate with!

Let girls use markers or stickers to list their cookie goals for the season! Add some ribbon to your supply list so girls can hang the koala from their backpacks or somewhere at home to admire all season long!

How to handle cookie money – Tips for parents • • • • • •

Ask your troop cookie manager (TCM) or troop leader for the troop policy on accepting checks. Always count money in front of the customer, especially when giving back change. Be cautious about accepting large denominations of bills. These can be counterfeited. You might want to invest in a counterfeit detector pen. Turn in money to your TCM promptly and frequently. She/he will let you know when the funds should be turned in. Always get a receipt from your TCM when money is turned in. Do not deposit cash into your personal account and write a check to the troop. Families are financially responsible for any lost, stolen, or counterfeit money.

How to use troop proceeds? The girls decide! Girl Scouts in each troop decide how to use the proceeds earned from participating in the cookie program. Below is a sample of how a troop of 12 Girl Scouts who reach the 2022 GSSJC per girl average goal of 150 packages might budget the $1,350 they earn in troop proceeds: • Attend Carousel camping weekend ($30/girl or adult) • Attend a Cybersecurity badge workshop ($23 per girl) • Hike with Henry at Camp Agnes Arnold ($6 per girl) • Renew all girls’ memberships during Early Bird to earn an exclusive patch ($25 per girl) - • Service project benefitting a local animal shelter • Add to travel fund for a future troop trip

$420 $276 $72 $300 $100 $182

Social media guidelines Best Practices Use the online storefront link for customer orders. Parent/Guardian must approve all girl-delivered online orders and supervise all communications and product delivery logistics. Girls should never deliver cookies alone, especially to the homes of strangers without an adult present. GSUSA and GSSJC reserves the right to remove or disable the link for any reason, including violations of guidance, inventory/fulfillment issues, safety issues, or if sales and marketing activity goes viral and otherwise creates unanticipated disruption. Social media ads are not allowed. Girls are not permitted to use their last name, contact information or address when using social media nor direct message on any social media platforms.

will contact you after Feb. 12 to deliver your cookies in person or you can have them direct-shipped to you now.

Keep it Girl-led: Girls 13 and older may use their social media accounts with parent permission.

Unacceptable Post: My daughter is selling Girl Scout Cookies. Leave a comment with your order. Be Safe: Girls using online sales and marketing must review and apply the Digital Marketing Tips for Cookie Entrepreneurs and Their Families. Girls, volunteers and parents must adhere to the Girl Scout Safety Pledge and Safety Activity Checkpoints for Computer and Internet Use and Cookie and Product Sales (with the exception that they may share beyond family and friends.)

For girls under 13, parents/ guardians may promote the girl’s online cookie storefront with direct girl involvement.

Storefront links should never be posted to online resale sites like eBay, Facebook Marketplace, Craig’s List, Nextdoor. etc. Note: A Facebook post containing “$”may automatically move the post to Facebook Marketplace. Disable the automated function to prevent this from happening.

Acceptable Post: My daughter Miranda is selling Girl Scout Cookies this year to go camping. If you are interested in supporting Miranda, visit her online storefront using this link and watch her video or leave a comment with the best time to reach you. Miranda

You're invited to summer fun! We are so excited about summer 2022 and hope you are too! This summer we’ll be offering a mix of camp sessions all summer long – from day camp to family camp to overnight (resident) camp! You can use your cookie dough to help pay for camp. What is your goal this year? Look for your resident camp guide in the mail in January, or look online at gssjc.org.

Cookie campaigns National Girl Scout Cookie Weekend/Walkabout We will join councils across the country Feb. 18 – 20 to participate in National Girl Scout Cookie Weekend 2022, celebrating all the fun, learning, and excitement Girl Scouts have experienced selling cookies for over 100 years! Join us in supporting our local cookie bosses and create moments of joy this winter with Girl Scout Cookies! Give cookies to a friend, enjoy them yourself, or donate them to a local cause—every bite counts! Take your wagon and walkabout your neighborhood. Did you know that doorto-door sales remains one of the most effective ways to sell cookies? In a recent national study, 78% of those customers who were not approached during a cookie sale stated they would have purchased two to four boxes if asked.

Cookies4Heroes, also called Cookie Share Have cookie customers who want to support your girl’s troop but don’t want to keep their purchase? They can donate their cookies to the Cookies4Heroes program (also called Cookie Share)! Girls can encourage customers to select this option when ordering online or inperson. (If buying online, there is a $1.25 processing fee.) All monies received as donations are considered Cookies4Heroes donations. For example, if someone says, “Keep the change,” the change goes toward Cookies4Heroes. After the cookie program, Cookies4Heroes orders are sent by the council and/or troops to local first responders and organizations that support the military. Our council goal is to provide 10,000 packages of cookies to first responders across Southeast Texas in 2022.

Pitch us Your Pitch: Feb. 12- March 12

Adventurefuls Campaign: Dates to be announced soon

This is a social media campaign hosted by San Jacinto Council. We want to hear from girls who are selling Girl Scout Cookies. There are several ways to participate:

This is a social media campaign hosted by Girl Scouts of the USA to celebrate the new Adventurefuls cookie and encourage girls to embrace the great outdoors and exciting outdoor activities. Check back soon for additional details and be sure to follow our council’s Facebook page!

Record your Girl Scout as she delivers her best “cookie pitch” and tells us why she enjoys being a Girl Scout. Camera shy? No problem! Send us a written message of your Girl Scout’s “cookie pitch” and tell us why she enjoys being a Girl Scout. Some submissions will be featured on our council Facebook page. No personal or contact information for girls will be published, including cookie storefront links. Email videos or photos and messages to communications@sjgs.org with the subject line: Pitch us your pitch. Girls who are featured on our council’s Facebook page will receive a small gift.
