OTY RAMOS Oty Ramos is leader of Troop #10869 and the current registrar for the Wildflower Service Unit. Oty’s story with Girl Scouts started as a young girl in New York when her aunt enrolled her and her cousin in a local Girl Scout troop. She joined as a Brownie and made it to a Junior before leaving the troop. She has fond memories of her time as a Girl Scout and remembers all of the valuable lessons she learned. When she heard a couple of mothers at her daughter’s school were thinking of starting a troop, she jumped at the opportunity to sign her up to join. When the opportunity came for Oty to become a leader in the troop, she did not hesitate even though she had no experience leading a troop. Lucky for Oty, she had the help and support from her co-leader, Jamye Hubbard. Oty’s goal is to teach her troop the values she learned as a Girl Scout and give them the opportunity to learn and experience new things. Oty currently lives in Miramar with her husband Ever, her four dogs, and two children, Sofia and Christian. She is a freelance Makeup Artist and an RSS for Chanel Beaute. She is a huge Star Wars fan and Marvel Fanatic. In her down time, Oty enjoys reading books, trying different eateries, grabbing a Starbucks coffee, and taking vacations with her family.

SPOTLIGHTS CAMP NOCATEE COMMONS GETS A NEW FIRE CIRCLE! A big thanks to Girl Scouts and their dads from Orange Blossom Service Unit who created a brand new fire circle and built benches in the Commons at Camp Nocatee on September 1! It was 96 degrees in Clewiston that day, yet everyone worked diligently to create a beautiful place for our campers to gather in the future for a campfire. Nearly all of the blocks used in the fire circle border came from Camp Telogia. It seemed only fitting that this great team enjoyed the inaugural fire that night! Many thanks to everyone who worked on this wonderful and much appreciated project.

CAMP NOCATEE FOUNDERS HALL GOT SOME GIRL SCOUT LOVE! Camp Nocatee got yet another upgrade thanks to an incredible group of very dedicated volunteers. They spent a total of 16 days from May through September working on improvements to Founders Hall. They removed the windows, installed new screening, and refinished the floor. By removing the windows and installing new screen, the air flow in the building has doubled. And don’t worry about inclement weather; the Bahama shutters on the exterior of the building will shield occupants from rain. The floor project was quite laborious! The existing paint and carpet glue was scraped, sanded, and removed with a concrete grinding machine which took days for this 3,000 square-foot floor (did you know that the floor was originally carpeted?). The floor had to then be cleaned and vacuumed numerous times to get rid of the dust and prepare for painting. Then, under the direction of Bernardo Pocho Gremli, a floor painting professional, the floor was painted. As you can see from the photo, it is gorgeous! GSSEF is so very grateful to this intrepid team!

EARTH DEFENDERS It’s almost time to get to work to defend Earth! October 1 kicks off our fall council-wide community service project and we are calling on all Earth Defenders to make the world a better - and greener - place! Have you decided how you will make an impact for Earth in our community yet? What you do is up to you. Whether it’s protecting animal habitats, reducing your carbon footprint, working to eliminating single-use plastics, or any number of issues you are passionate about to defend Earth. Need help coming up with some ideas? Check out our list of resources that might help point you in the right direction here. All participants must register here. Also, all registered Earth Defenders will need to track their progress throughout the project and submit an online form that will be emailed to all registered participants upon completion of the project on October 31. ULTIMATE STEM DAY Hey there future scientists! We can’t wait to have a STEM-azing day with you exploring the wonders and magic of science, technology, engineering, and math at Ultimate STEM Day presented by Ultimate Software on October 13! We are positive our Council has lots of scientists in the making because the morning session for Daisies, Brownies, and Juniors has already sold out. However, there is still space in the afternoon session for Cadettes, Seniors, and Ambassadors, so hurry up and grab your spot before they are all gone! If you didn’t get to sign up for this event and still want to get in on the STEM action, head to our Activities Calendar on our website to check out all of the upcoming STEM programs we have planned for you. MOVIE MANIA Movie Mania is back with a fantastical twist! Join in on this all-night, movie marathon, lock-in party just for Girl Scouts on November 20 at Cinepolis in Deerfield Beach. Girls will get the chance to watch movies including new releases and kid-friendly classics, enjoy snacks from concessions (at an additional cost), get their faces painted, take photos at the photo booth, and dance the night away with our very own DJ. Daisies can party, too! Daisies and their chaperones will have the option to leave the event beginning at midnight. Registration opens October 1 at 10:00 a.m. for VIP tickets and at 11:00 a.m. for General Admission tickets.

#BE HEALTHFUL Save the date for December 8! Registration will open October 8 for #BeHealthful presented by Baptist Health South Florida. This exciting program will focus on creating healthy girls and healthy futures. Have your troop spend a jam-packed day with us filled with handson activities that will provide them with the necessary tools to build healthier minds, bodies and spirits. All participants will earn their specific grade-level badge and a Strong Girls Healthy Kids patch in sessions led by Baptist Health of South Florida’s team of healthcare professionals! Nurses, doctors, dietitians, exercise physiologists, and mental health specialists will lead fun, educational workshops that will guide girls throughout the program. Take some time to visit the booths at our exclusive health fair for interactive demonstrations with different healthcare providers and professions. During the program, girls will have a chance to interact with a variety of specialists from Baptist Health to learn about making healthy food choices, exercise, mental health, the healthcare profession, and more! WE ♥ WELAKA We’re showing our love for Camp Welaka and invite you to join us for a fun-filled day on December 1 where you will get to explore what makes Camp Welaka unique and special! You will get a taste of all the adventures waiting for you at camp including hiking, walking the catwalk, archery, canoeing, outdoor cooking, and more. You may even spot some of our camp residents including otters, osprey, gopher tortoises, deer, or any of our many animal friends! MEMBERSHIP GOLD AWARD WORKSHOPS ARE NOW OPEN FOR ONLINE REGISTRATION GSSEF Gold Award Workshops are offered for Senior and Ambassador Girl Scouts (Grades 9-12) who are interested in learning more about - and earning -the Girl Scout Gold Award. GSSEF requires this session is completed prior to submission of a Gold Award Project Proposal. Girls will learn more about how to take their passion and ideas and pair them with a large-scale project that delivers meaningful outcomes. Participating girls will:

GET READY FOR BACK TO TROOP It’s that time of year when office supply stores are full of parents and students buying notebooks, pens, and crayons to prepare them for a new school year. Don’t forget, besides new school supplies you’ll also need all your Girl Scout gear because your next Girl Scout adventure is ready and waiting for you. To help you get started, the GSSEF Retail Store and Pop-Up Shop are running a Back to Troop promotion. Spend $75 or more on a single transaction beginning August 22 through October 17, 2018 and earn a $10 coupon.
