SPOTLIGHTS

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT Carol Eubanks began her Girl Scout journey as a girl and has been involved throughout her entire adult life. She currently serves on the Leo Service Unit Team as their Treasurer. She is also a Leader for a multi-level troop and just recently formed a new Daisy troop for her granddaughter, Emily.

Beyond her service as a Leader, she assists with Adult Recognition, delivers recruitment flyers to schools, procures cookie booth locations, runs programs during the year (including their very popular Cookies and Caroling around the holidays in December and the Service Unit Camporee), and so much more.

Carol and her husband, Dave, are deeply rooted in Girl Scouting in the Palm Beach County area and are always ready to lend a helping hand. They are members of Operation: Welaka Restoration, which is a group of volunteers who have dedicated themselves to helping restore the camp. Recently, they helped to restore the catwalk.

Next time you are at Welaka, go for a walk on the catwalk and think about the hours of service these dedicated volunteers brought to camp for the benefit of all in our Council!

MEMBERSHIP RECRUITMENT VOLUNTEERS NEEDED! Have you thought about expanding your role as a volunteer with Girl Scouts of Southeast Florida? Do you love introducing Girl Scouts to new girls? Are you on your school’s PTA or have a strong bond with your school?

WE NEED YOU! As we close out the 2017-2018 Girl Scout membership year, we have already begun planning for 2018-2019, but we have some gaps to fill. The Member Engagement Team is looking to strengthen and support our Recruitment Teams throughout the summer and for next year. We are looking for dedicated individuals seeking to participate with GSSEF in new and exciting ways.

New member recruitment is vital to our growth and we would love to build our team with additional excited and dedicated volunteers to assist with recruitment and to serve as school liaisons.

Maybe you’re already involved with your school and have an opportunity to share Girl Scout information with them? Or maybe you are able to be a point of contact for new families interested in Girl Scouts?

There are so many opportunities for you to be involved and help us grow to ensure every girl in our community has the opportunity to be a Girl Scout - and we will give you all the tools you need to find success!

PROGRAMS AT A GLANCE WELAKA WIBIT WATER WARS Come cool off at camp on June 2 for a brand new Girl Scout event - the Welaka Wibit Water Wars! A Wibit is a huge aquatic obstacle course that will be set up in the pool at Camp Welaka - just in time for summer!

Brownies and Juniors will experience Water Wars as they spend their morning playing on the Wibit, hiking around camp, and even creating edible coral before heading home at 1 p.m. Cadettes, Seniors and Ambassadors will spend the whole day at camp - playing a variety of water-themed games in the morning, and after lunch they will hike out to the catwalk to experience the unique mangrove ecology, and of course, have plenty of time to play on the new Wibit!

PROGRAMS AT A GLANCE S.C.A.T. PROGRAM Our first-ever S.C.A.T. (Sleuthing Critters and Tracks) program kicked-off on May 12 and was a huge hit! If you didn’t get the opportunity to join us – you haven’t missed out! Due to the SLEUTHING • CRITTERS • AND • TRACKS demand and success of this program, we will be holding it again on Saturday, June 23 at Camp Welaka. Girls will sharpen their detective skills at this day-long program for Brownies, Juniors, and Cadettes as they are transformed into animal sleuths! They will learn all about animal habitats and behaviors while studying what our furry, scaly and feathered friends leave behind - animal scat and tracks! A wildlife professional will be there to talk about the best ways to track an animal and leave no trace. Afterward, girls will put their newly acquired detective skills to use in a fun game.

SUMMER FUNSHINE Girl Scouting does not have to stop when school is out! Troops can continue Girl Scout activities throughout the summer, even if it’s just once a month. SUMMER FUNSHINE provides an opportunity to do things your troop didn’t have the time or resources to do during the school year and it is an excellent opportunity to introduce bridging Girl Scouts to the rest of the troop.

To earn the SUMMER FUNSHINE patch or bar, troops must complete the following requirements:

1 Participate in three activities (one per month) during June, July, and August. Your activities must include a community service project (e.g. host a school supply drive, start a recycling project or participate in a beach clean-up), a family activity (e.g. family-friendly movie outing, year-end picnic, canoeing or attend a Council-sponsored family activity together), and a troop choice activity (e.g. begin work towards a new badge, start a Journey, go to the water park or attend a Council-sponsored summer program together)

2 It is not necessary for every girl to attend each activity, but each girl must participate in at least one activity to be eligible for the patch/bar.

A patch and year bar will be available for first time participants. Girls who have already earned the patch will only need the year bar.

DUFFY’S PRESENTS: COOKING FUN Duffy’s Sports Grill has partnered with GSSEF to provide girls the opportunity to earn their Cooking Fun Badge in a real restaurant test kitchen! Participants will receive a Cooking Fun Badge, an exclusive Duffy’s Foundation Cooking patch, apron, measuring cup, pizza cutter, can opener, gift card, and more!

For Juniors (Saturday, June 16 from 10 a.m. – 12 p.m and 1:00 – 3:00 p.m.): There’s steam and bubbles, interesting tools, amazing smells...and lots of room for experiments! We are not describing a laboratory - it’s actually your own kitchen! Follow along with a professional chef to make amazing meals and learn to create a whole meal of your own.

For Cadettes (Saturday, June 23 from 10 a.m. – 12 p.m.): Culinary possibilities are as diverse as the globe of people who cook them. Wherever you go in the world, a version of pocket bread holds something delicious, and your sweet tooth can be satisfied with everything from date syrup to lingonberry jam. In this badge program, you will cook up four dishes from across time and distance, and find out where your taste buds want to travel.

Cadettes Register Here For Seniors and Ambassadors (Saturday, September 15 from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m.): Learn about being committed to eating locally grown, seasonal foods. These efforts can be important—and delicious—steps toward healthful eating, helping the environment, and supporting local farmers.

ADULT & LEADER HIGHLIGHTS ADULT & LEADER HIGHLIGHTS Call for Nominations: Girl Scouts Lead the Way Girl Scouts of Southeast Florida will be hosting our second annual Girl Scouts Lead the Way luncheon on September 26 in Davie. We are accepting nominations of professional women who are leaders in their industry, are role models for today’s girls, and embody the characteristics of a G.I.R.L. (Go-getter, Innovator, Risk-taker, and Leader) to be honored and presented with an award at the luncheon.

Nominees must be able to attend the event to accept their award. Prior experience with Girl Scouts is not required.

The submission deadline for nominations is Tuesday, May 29. The nomination form can be found here.

EMPOWER HOUR Join Girl Scouts of Southeast Florida CEO, Lisa Johnson, for a series of one-hour webinars designed to empower you with information and serve as a place to ask questions and share your ideas to make our Girl Scout Council an even better place for all of our girls. This webinar is open to volunteers and parents of registered Girl Scouts and each session is designed to provide about 15 minutes of information followed by a Q&A for up to 45 minutes.

MEMBERSHIP IN-STORE: COOKING FUN! July 21 is National Junk Food Day and we are celebrating this fun day with a hands-on cooking activity for kids ages 5-12!

They are invited to visit our Palm Beach County Retail Store (with their parents) for fabulous yummy activities! InStore Cooking Fun will feature recipes made from junk food - yummmm! The cost is $4 per child and includes the adult guided activity, ingredients and take-home treats PLUS the Cooking Fun patch for Girl Scouts.
