LETTER FROM THE

Board Chair and CEO Our 2013-2014 year was definitely one of biggests, records and firsts. Twenty-five girls earned their Gold Award this year – the largest class we’ve ever had. You’ll see our girls didn’t just plant gardens; they taught a community how to grow and maintain a healthy lifestyle. They didn’t just create a book club; they increased literacy and instilled a love of reading for kids without regular access to books.

Our Cookies for the Military campaign collected a record number of donations and allowed us to send 53,454 boxes of Girl Scout Cookies to the women and men serving in the military. We were excited to learn that Girl Scout Cookies are one of things our soldiers look forward to most.

For the first time, we recognized two women with the Lifetime Achievement Award. Claudet Benton and Gail Lunsford are volunteers who exemplify a life lived with volunteer service at the heart. They have made extraordinary contributions to the Girl Scout Mission through consistent and far-reaching acts of volunteerism that have resulted in the strengthening of our organization.

Last spring, we refocused our efforts on delivering the Girl Scout Experience the way girls want it – as part of a troop. We know they want to have tons of fun, make new friends and go on fantastic new adventures – together. We also recognized that in order to give girls the troops they want, we needed Troop Leaders to make that happen. These volunteers introduce girls to new experiences that show them they’re capable of more than they ever imagined. With a new membership strategy in place, we recruited 47 new Troop Leaders over the summer. This is big step in the right direction for giving more girls a life-changing experience through Girl Scouting.

We are excited about what the future holds and look forward to what the coming year brings.

A DEEPER LOOK INTO

Girl Scout Membership In the spring of 2014, Girl Scouts of Southeast Florida transitioned from a focus on short-term series programs to a concentrated effort on forming troops.

This important business decision came as a result of our council’s second formal Strategic Learning process that concluded in early 2014.

- Girls shared the high value they placed on the troop’s peer-to-peer settings, cooperative learning and community service.

- Parents’ first choice was a troop placement for their daughter. - Active Troop Leaders were declining. Without Troop Leaders, there could be no new troops for girls.

GSSEF staff and volunteer collaborative teams developed new tools that assist adults through efficient on boarding, effective orientation and user-friendly guides that fully support the first year in leadership.

The results were immediate. In just a few months: - 47 new Troop Leaders were recruited, and 29 new troops were formed. - Volunteer Essentials (on boarding and orientation) was introduced in an online, webinar format.

- An estimated 250 new girls were added as members of the new troops. -

The Early Bird Gets the Worm

Early Bird re-registration is the special time in April and May when troops re-register girls and adults for the next Girl Scout membership year. It ensures girls a place in the troop and allows the Troop Leader to know how many new girls she can add throughout the year.

2014 Gold Award Projects Valerie BeJune Troop #10095 “Stand Up, Speak Out, Take Action” Coral Springs Gold Advisor: Shayne Gutierrez Troop Leader: Phyllis BeJune At age 14 Valerie was stalked by a male student from her school. From the halls of school to her own home, the real-world issue of stalking was literally on her doorstep. After authorities were involved and the fear began to subside, Valerie decided other female students needed to know what stalking was and how to get help before it’s too late. She founded an educational alliance, beginning at her own school, that would educate girls about stalkers close by and lingering in cyberspace. It was her mission to spread the startling statistics and gain serious attention to this growing crime. With key community collaborations, Valerie has published important educational materials that are part of her prevention and awareness campaign.

Gina Crittenden Troop #20541 “Liberated Tomatoes” Palm Beach Gardens Gold Advisor: Debbie Bordner Troop Leader: Tina Tucker Gina wanted to teach a special group of students about gardening and growing your own food. Through research, Gina learned of the power of interactive learning for special needs students and that gardening skills can increase dexterity, too.

Gina collaborated with The Arc of Palm Beach County to create and present an exciting new gardening curriculum to The Arc’s PAVE (Progressive Adult Vocational Education) program students. She produced step-by-step books for the students that demonstrated gardening techniques that she personally presented in the classroom settings. Then, over the course of months, she built and tended a garden with the students.

They successfully grew tomatoes, broccoli and chives to make a truly sustainable food source and outdoor learning space to benefit the students of the future.

While total sales decreased 4.3 percent, the number of girls joining the Extreme Team by selling 1,000 or more boxes was the largest yet – 132 girls.

We partnered with Forgotten Soldiers Outreach, America’s Moms for Soldiers and Operation Homefront to distribute cookies to the brave men and women serving our country, both domestically and overseas. The second Annual Give a Box, Get a Box program was held at Duffy’s Sports Grill. Sponsored by the Dermatology Center of Florida, the event resulted in 3,196 boxes of Girl Scout Cookies being donated, an increase of 65% over the prior year.

Girl Scouts of Southeast Florida Receives $50,000 Grant In 2014, Girl Scouts of Southeast Florida was the recipient of a $50,000 grant from The Batchelor Foundation to support increased outdoor and environmental education programs as well as much needed renovations to the Ranger’s cabin at Camp Welaka. Through the funding provided by The Batchelor Foundation, GSSEF will be able to provide educational programming to promote awareness of, and a lifetime commitment to, environmental protection and wildlife conservation.
