Our 2012-2013 year was full of growth and opportunity for Girl Scouts of Southeast Florida. We posted our second consecutive year of membership growth, launched a CHAIR new partnership with the Palm Beach County Food Bank, honored the tremendous Lorna E. Brown-Burton work of local women at several events, and embarked on great new STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) programming through a partnership with the 1st VICE CHAIR Girls sold 1,000+ Boxes Foundation.

New Adult Education Courses:

Adults Can Sew Too! A basic sewing skill building class where leaders can learn (or remember) a traditional skill they can then teach to the girls and empower them to sew their patches!

Girl Scout’s Special Days and Traditions Throughout the long history of Girl Scouts, certain traditions remain meaningful and important and are still practiced today. This class describes annual celebrations in the Girl Scout year, as well as other revered Girl Scout traditions.

Learn a Flag Retirement Ceremony Did you know that the Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts and the Military are the ONLY organizations officially allowed to perform this patriotic ceremony? Retire the old frazzled flags with respect - this special campfire ceremony will inspire you ... and we will teach you some songs, too!

Traveling with Girls This workshop promises to provide great trip ideas that you can do with your girls. Facilitators will provide progression tips, how to travel to the Juliette Low Birthplace and discuss “Destination’s” for older girls.

Troop Finance and EOY Reporting Workshop Elective workshop is designed to provide detailed explanations of Troop finance procedures and EOY reporting guidance that show leaders in detail how to set-up and manage their troop finances throughout the year.

BTC Class Revised and Updated With the assistance of a Volunteer Taskforce, we have re-designed the Basic Troop Camping (BTC) curriculum with a new name! The new Troop Camp Training (TCT) has three levels; Basic, Intermediate and Advanced. TCT takes into account varying skill levels of our volunteers and teaches them how to camp Girl Scout style! We hope to introduce more volunteers and girls to our camp properties for outdoor fun!

At Camp-Tennial, 1,251 attendees honored the past 100 years of Girl Scouts and celebrated the next 100 years at Camp Welaka. Girl Scouts and their families enjoyed classic Girl Scouting experiences such as archery, canoeing, fire building, SWAPs, flag ceremonies, wish boats, walking tours and of course, s’more making.

Girl Scouts’ spirit ignited girls from all over our area to come together for an action-packed day designed with one goal: Badges. Girls had the opportunity to attend workshops throughout the day to earn petals and badges to complete their journey in Girl Scouting. Older girls also had the opportunity to spend the night at camp prior to the event and attend Program Aide training, in which they were able to put their newly learned skills to work mentoring and guiding their fellow Girl Scout sisters in the badge workshops.

Feeding Florida Together Food Drive

This year, Girl Scouts of Southeast Florida partnered exclusively with the Palm Beach County Food Bank. Their staff and volunteers created a program component that the girls received when they brought the food and donations they collected to the Food Bank in Lantana. Girls received age-appropriate, meaningful, hands-on and educational experiences that helped educate them about “food insecurity” and real hunger issues facing our local neighbors. A total of 1,583 Girl Scouts collected 12,336 pounds of food during the month of April.

Baby Basics

Girl Scouts of Southeast Florida partnered with 12 local agencies to collect essential baby items for families in need. Kids, helping kids locally, is one of the most important aspects of the Baby Basics program. Baby Basics educates girls about the impact having a baby has on one’s life. It also helps them think beyond themselves by instilling a stronger connection and sense of responsibility to those who are in need in their community. A total of 1,592 girls participated to collect 4,010 items for families. GSSEF received a $2,500 contribution from the Kiwanis Club of West Palm Beach that was used to support this Council-wide community service project.

Girl Scouts of Southeast Florida Receive $100, 000 Grant

In 2013, Girl Scouts of Southeast Florida was the recipient of a $100,000 grant from the Quantum Foundation for an education program, Engaging Girls in STEM. Working with middle school-aged girls in Palm Beach County, this program will serve 400 underserved girls over two years, introducing them to STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) and encouraging them to pursue education and career opportunities in STEM-related fields. The Girl Scouts STEM program is unique because the experiences for the girls are framed within the context of leadership. This approach engages girls through girl-led activities, learning by doing and cooperative learning.

National Girl Scout Cookie Day

The first annual National Girl Scout Cookie Day was held on February 8, and local Girl Scouts partnered with Duffy’s Sports Grill to host our first “Give a Box, Get a Box Campaign.”

More than 1,900 boxes were donated to our Cookies for the Military program by Duffy’s patrons, who each got to bring a box home for themselves as well.
