Together we can...

Welcome to the first edition of the GSS Annual which gives us a chance to showcase the variety of projects that our team have been working on across the UK over the last year.

Despite a rather challenging year for everyone, the Practice has continued to work closely with our clients to successfully progress our projects in a range of sectors.

This Annual therefore covers a variety of projects at different stages, from recent appointments to completed schemes. We have also had the pleasure of hosting some great staff events, giving us the opportunity to celebrate the hard work put in by our team.

We would, once again, like to thank you all for your continued support, and look forward to working with you throughout 2022.

Bishop Cosin’s Library Client:

The refurbishment of Durham University’s Grade II* Bishop Cosin’s Library, located on Palace Green, was completed in January 2022. This listed building houses significant collections and was originally completed in 1667-68.

Works included the repair and replacement of the roof and stonework, as well as internal refurbishments of the library, gallery and reception areas.

Dame Margaret Barbour Building

The Dame Margaret Barbour Building forms an important addition to the University’s campus, which houses a range of cutting edge facilities in support of various academic programmes. The innovative building provides functional and flexible amenities for teaching and learning, and has been designed to facilitate integrated research by promoting collaboration between disciplines through shared encounter spaces and the provision of social breakout areas.

Net Zero Industry Innovation Centre Client:

Middlesbrough, North Yorkshire

Planning approval has recently been granted for a £13.5m research and innovation facility at Teesside University.

Plans for the Net Zero Industry Innovation Centre were unveiled by the University, the Tees Valley Mayor and the Combined Authority to support the region’s ongoing drive for clean energy and sustainability.

Northampton Museum & Art Gallery

The significant expansion and redevelopment of Northampton Museum & Art Gallery formed part of the Northampton Cultural Quarter Masterplan which GSS had previously developed. The project more than doubles the space on offer to the public by extending the museum into the adjacent vacant properties, including the Old Gaol and a building designed by our founder, John Alfred Gotch, in 1937. The new courtyard extension, which links the buildings, includes a Shoe Gallery which flows into the vaulted basement structures of the original Gaol.

Office & Warehouse Complex Client:

DSV Road Ltd.

GSS have recently completed a significant expansion, reconfiguration and modernisation project at DSV’s UK head office. The completed works involved the creation of a new build office and warehouse space, as well as an overhead footbridge linking the existing 3-storey office space to the new space, allowing the site to operate more efficiently.

Glenvale Park Primary School

GSS have been appointed as Architects and Lead Consultants for the design and delivery of a new primary school, nursery and community centre, which is part of the first phase of the Glenvale Park 2,000 home urban extension in Wellingborough.

The new 2-form entry primary school has been designed to allow for future expansion to a 3-form entry.

Kettering Gallery, Library & Museum Client:

North Northamptonshire Council

The transformation of the Kettering Gallery, Library & Museum will create a unified site for the Manor House Museum, Kettering Library, and Alfred East Art Gallery, a building designed by the founder of GSS, John Alfred Gotch, in 1913. Works will include significant refurbishments to the site, as well as the construction of a new two-storey contemporary extension, which will enhance the existing accommodation provision.

South Central Institute of Technology, Reading

As part of the joint partnership of GSS, Milton Keynes College and Activate Learning to deliver three Institutes of Technology projects at Bletchley, Oxford and Reading, GSS have recently completed the South Central Institute of Technology in Reading. The new £1m facilities are designed to allow students to collaborate and engage with digital learning, creating a clear route to technical employment.

Lord Williams’s School Expansion Client:

Location:

Thame, Oxfordshire

The expansion and upgrades currently being undertaken at Lord Williams’s School will allow for 150 additional pupils, growing to 12-forms of entry. The designs include new build learning and library facilities, together with external learning environments and a range of remodelling to existing buildings.

The project includes sustainable technology, such as airsource heating and solar PV panels.

21 St. Thomas Street Client:

The new, 9-storey student accommodation building at 21 St. Thomas Street provides 357 student bedspaces for the University of Bristol. Forming part of the exciting Redcliffe Development Quarter, this low carbon building is part of the first stage of plans to transform Bristol into a carbon neutral city by 2050.

The Catalyst is a multi-award-winning innovation centre at the heart of the Newcastle Helix development. As home to Newcastle University’s teams from the National Innovation Centre for Ageing and the National Innovation Centre for Data, The Catalyst brings together businesses, academics and members of the public to collaborate and support the research and development of new ageing and data products and services.

South Central Institute of Technology, Bletchley

The South Central Institute of Technology in Bletchley will benefit from the refurbishment and extension of an existing college building, which will create a new digital higher education facility for students age 18+. The centre will deliver an inclusive and aspirational environment,

Mathematical & Computer Sciences Building

The new cutting edge Mathematical Sciences & Computer Sciences Building provides office space to both professors and PhD students, in addition to having a number of specialist labs, including a Heavy-Duty and an Open IT Lab with a designated server room. The building also houses a 120-seat tiered lecture theatre, tutorial rooms, café, flexible event space, enterprise hub, meeting rooms and breakout spaces.

NHS Integrated Covid Hub Client:

To bring improved Covid-19 testing and research to the North East, GSS supported Robertson Construction with the fast-paced delivery of the NHS Integrated Covid Hub North East project at the Lumen Building, Newcastle Helix, for Newcastle upon Tyne Hospital’s NHS Foundation Trust.

Uppingham Affordable Housing Client:

Uppingham Homes CLT

Location:

Uppingham, Rutland

Designs have been developed on behalf of Uppingham Homes Community Land Trust to bring affordable housing to the town.

The proposals include four 1-bed and two 2-bed apartments and are aimed at assisting local residents under the age of 35 with their first step onto the property ladder.

Digital Academy Client:

The new Digital Academy at Northampton College is the first of its kind in the East Midlands and provides high-quality teaching and learning space across four storeys. Spaces include digital workshops, a video editing suite, a digital design studio, and other specialist facilities and equipment, allowing the College to offer a range of courses and apprenticeships intended to help students move into digital careers by improving their professional IT skills.

Carbon Neutral Community Client:

The GSS specialist Masterplanning Team have developed plans to create a carbon neutral new community of up to 3850 homes incorporating later living, a school, retail and employment, together with a new publicly accessible woodland of 100,000 trees and a solar park.

DSV New Offices Client:

As part of our ongoing work with DSV and their expansion programme, our team delivered new build offices to support DSV’s major warehouse and storage facility in Manchester.

In addition to the new offices, significant refurbishments and a car park expansion were also completed.

Macmillan Cancer Support Centre Client:

GSS are working closely with Kettering General Hospital to deliver a new Macmillan Cancer Support Centre, which will be the first of its kind in North Northamptonshire. Construction on the centre began in 2021, within an existing courtyard inside the main hospital site.

SPECIALIST IN-HOUSE TEAMS Graphics As a streamlined part of our service offering, 3DLABS is our inhouse digital design studio that specialises in CGI visualisations, 3D printing and marketing support services.

Sustainability Our in-house Sustainability Working Group are collaborating with industry leaders to research and develop the latest technologies and sustainable processes that can be incorporated into our designs.

Carbon Reduction As a Practice, GSS place great emphasis on considering both operational energy and embodied carbon when designing buildings and advising our clients. Our Carbon Reduction Team focus their efforts on how we can continue to reduce our carbon footprint through sustainable designs and innovative practices.

Heritage & Conservation Led by our in-house Architect Accredited in Building Conservation, the GSS Heritage & Conservation Team have a great deal of experience in the repair, conservation, alteration and enhancement of historic buildings.

Health & Wellbeing The GSS Health and Wellbeing Working Group works across the Practice ensuring that all of our designers have access to the latest research in this field, resulting in designs that support health, comfort and happiness.

Modern Methods of Construction Our Modern Methods of Construction (MMC) Team are responsible for developing strategies and research on the most appropriate MMC solutions for our clients and developments.
