Cheryl Strayed’s contemporary advice column is just the soothing balm for our spirits that we need right now.

As we all approach the light at the end of this long tunnel of pandemic isolation, this play offers hope, comfort and a way forward in our lives.

We have been blessed to assemble a cast of superb George Street favorites to gather together in Sharon Karmazin’s safe pod of a house on a lake employing all COVID safety protocols to live and work together on this venture.

I found the whole experience to be a magical healing cocoon of creativity.

John Bolger, Kally Duling, Ryan George and Laiona Michelle, our new Artistic Associate, along with a terrific group of designers and filmmakers, have fashioned a filmed play which I believe will not only impress but inspire and uplift you.

Laiona Michelle (Sugar) added writer to her resume with her double bill as writer and star of the critical and boxoffice smash, Little Girl Blue, The Nina Simone Musical, which launched its world premiere engagement at the George Street Playhouse on Feb 1, 2019. Now, she takes on the mantle of book writer, for a new project, Mandela — a musical based on Nelson Mandela’s life; from his days as a leading activist against Apartheid, to his imprisonment and eventual release to become the nation’s President. Laiona Michelle began to gain national notoriety when she made her Broadway debut in 2015, in the musical, Amazing Grace, which opened at the Nederlander.

Cast in the principal role of Nanna, a woman stolen away from her family by slave traders, she delivers one of the stand out musical moments of the play. Laiona Michelle has been nominated for numerous awards including the Independent Reviewers of New England, Best Lead Actress award (2001, Stonewall Jackson’s House); and she is the recipient of the Barrymore and Carbonell Awards (2004, Constant Star); The NAACP Hollywood award (2005, Constant

Cheryl Strayed (Original Book) is the author of Tiny Beautiful Things, Torch, Brave Enough, and the No. 1 New York Times best seller Wild. Her books have been translated into more than 40 languages around the world. The Academy Award–nominated film adaptation of Wild was released in 2014. Ms. Strayed’s essays and stories have appeared in The Best American Essays, Vogue, The New York Times, The Washington Post, and elsewhere. She is the co-host of The New York Times’s “Dear Sugar Radio” podcast, which originated with her popular “Dear Sugar” column.

Nia Vardalos (Adaptor, Co-Conceiver) is an alumna of Chicago’s The Second City and a Joseph Jefferson Award winner whose most recent theatre credits include Sugar in Tiny Beautiful Things directed by Thomas Kail in two consecutive seasons (The Public Theater) and Jennie in Company directed by Gary Griffin (Theatre 20).

Marshall Heyman (Co-Conceiver) has written for The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, The New Yorker, Vanity Fair, Vogue, InStyle, W, Harper’s Bazaar, New York, and many others.

He recently wrote for the AMC show “Dietland.”

Thomas Kail (Co-Conceiver) directed the Broadway productions of Hamilton (Tony Award), In the Heights (Tony nomination), Lombardi, and Magic/ Bird. His selected credits include the world premieres of Hamilton, Dry Powder, Tiny Beautiful Things, and Kings (The Public Theater), the world premiere of In the Heights, Broke-ology, and the world premiere of When I Come to Die (Lincoln Center Theater), and the world premiere of Daphne’s Dive (Signature Theatre Company). He is the co-creator and director of the hip-hop improv group Freestyle Love Supreme. Mr. Kail’s television credits include “Fosse/Verdon” (upcoming), Grease Live! (two Emmy Awards),“2 Broke Girls,”and The Oprah Winfrey Oscar Special.

David Saint (Director/Artistic Director) is in his 23rd season as Artistic Director of George Street Playhouse. He has directed 39 mainstage productions at GSP, having most recently helmed this season’s Virtual production of Fully Committed

by Becky Mode. Other recent productions directed by Saint include Midwives by Chris Bohjalian and based on the novel Midwives, and Conscience

by Joe DiPietro both performed in the inaugural season in the New Brunswick Performing Arts Center.

Other notable productions include The Trial of Donna Caine, American Hero; I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change and An Act of God starring the legendary Kathleen Turner in the 2017-18 season. His time here has been marked by collaborations with such artists as Keith Carradine, Tyne Daly, Rachel Dratch, Sandy Duncan, Boyd Gaines, A.R. Gurney, Uta Hagen, Jack Klugman, Dan Lauria, Kathleen Marshall, Elaine May, Anne Meara, David Hyde Pierce, Chita Rivera, Paul Rudd, Stephen Sondheim, Marlo Thomas, Eli Wallach and many others, including a remarkable partnership with Arthur Laurents. Story. In July 2016, he directed a twonight concert performance of West Side Story at the legendary Hollywood Bowl. In Summer 2019, he directed a revolutionary new production of West Side Story for IHI Stage Around in Tokyo and currently serves as Associate Producer for a new film version of West Side Story directed by Steven Spielberg. He also has directed on Broadway, off-Broadway and regionally at Playwrights Horizons, Manhattan Theatre Club, Primary Stages, McCarter, Williamstown, Seattle Rep, Pasadena Playhouse, Pittsburgh Public, Long Wharf and many others on premieres by writers such as Aaron Sorkin, Wendy Wasserstein, Peter Parnell, Jonathan Marc Sherman, Joe DiPietro and Jonathan Larson. He is the recipient of the Alan Schneider Award, Helen Hayes Award, L.A. Drama Critics Award, several Drama-Logue Awards and is the President of The Laurents/ Hatcher Foundation.

Helen Tewksbury (Art Direction) Most recently at George Street Playhouse: Fully Committed. This is Helen’s 7th season as Props Master with the George Street Playhouse.

Helen has been a professional Props Master, Artisan, and fine artist in NJ for 12 years. She has worked throughout the country with Premiere Stages, The Paper Mill Playhouse, The State Theater, The Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey, Echo Valley Arts in Vermont, and The Ohio Valley Summer Theatre. Her fine art has

been sold at auction to benefit local non-profit theater. She is a proud member of IATSE Local 21.

Michael Boylan (Cinematography and Editing) grew up loving film. The first movie he saw was Star Wars, then it was E.T. and his life changed forever.

He started making movies when he was 11 and never stopped. He went to film school in Pittsburgh, PA. After he finished film school, he worked on Jack Hannah’s Animal Adventures and got to travel around the world. When he came home he took what he learned and applied it to producing creative video content for companies that he loved and cared for. He continues to do this every day for companies like The George Street Playhouse, Two River Theater, Manasquan Bank, McCormick Spices and many more.

He has won several awards including best short film at Filmone Festival in NJ. He lives in historic Atlantic Highlands, NJ with his wife Kathleen and twins Madison and Mikey and their dogs, Rosie and Marty McFly. Lisa Zinni (Costume Designer) Lisa designed this season’s virtual production of BAD DATES staring Andrea Burns. Last season she designed the new stage adaptation of MIDWIVES by Chris Bojalian for George Street Playhouse and worked with Artistic Director David Saint designing the groundbreaking production of West Side Story at the IHI Stage Around in Tokyo. Christopher J. Bailey (GSP Production Manager) This season marks Mr. Bailey’s 23rd at George Street Playhouse and 16th as its Production Manager, having previously served the Playhouse as Technical Coordinator and Sound and Lighting Manager.

Recently for GSP he was Lighting Designer for last season’s production of The Immigrant. Was also Lighting Designer for GSP’s production of Clever Little Lies, which moved to the Guild Hall Theatre in East Hampton and then off-Broadway to the Westside Theatre. His other designs for GSP includes 6 scenic designs and 9 sound designs for GSP’s Educational Touring productions, 28 lighting designs and 40 sound designs for GSP’s mainstage productions.

Kelly Ryman (Managing Director) is celebrating her 21st season with George Street Playhouse, having recently led the company through a transformative chapter in its history — overseeing the planning, construction and operations of the move to its interim home on Rutgers Cook Campus in 2017 as well as the move back downtown as a Founding Resident Company of New Brunswick Performing Arts Center. From 2000 to 2013, as the company’s Director of Marketing and Public Relations,

she spearheaded promotional efforts that resulted in the top tenhighest grossing productions in the Playhouse’s history, including the hit musical It Shoulda Been You which moved to Broadway in 2015.

Off-Broadway, Kelly was a member of the marketing team for The Toxic Avenger, which premiered at George Street Playhouse and went on to win the 2009 Outer Critics’ Circle Award for Best New Musical. Active in the non-profit arts community throughout New Jersey, she was the Central NJ Chair of Jersey Arts Marketers for over a decade. She serves on the Board of Directors of New Brunswick City Center and is an adjunct professor of Arts and Entertainment Business at Mercer County College.

Prior to her tenure at George Street Playhouse, Ms. Ryman worked at McCarter Theatre and The Wilma Theater. Kelly was recognized in 2012

by ArtPride NJ with their Leadership Award.
