From the Artistic Director When our good friend and longtime Board Member Sharon Karmazin introduced me to the wonderful Ruth and Steve Hendel they presented me with the chance to help develop a musical adaptation of the popular film A Walk on the Moon. A huge fan of the film, I was very intrigued. They had also enlisted the very talented Tony Award nominee Sheryl Kaller to direct! Sheryl has assembled an extraordinary group of artists to realize this epic adventure you are about to see. Our own journey to present the results was long as well, originally intending to open just after the pandemic hit. Finally the wait is over! In some ways, our protagonist Pearl’s personal journey of self discovery set against the larger context of the Summer of ‘69 mirrors our own period of adjustment during the last two years as we reassess what matters most in our lives. We hope that this lavish production not only delights you but touches your heart as it relates the importance of family to us all. Enjoy the trip!

George Street Playhouse is pleased to spotlight two members of our Board of Trustees, Camara Epps and Kimberlee Phelan, who joined the board in 2022. Their leadership and the leadership of the entire board enables us to remain committed to our mission of enriching lives through world-class theater. Camara Epps (Trustee) works as a therapist at The Center for Therapy and Counseling Services, where she supports clients with varying mental health needs. Additionally, Camara is the School Partnerships Manager at Good Grief, where she educates schools and organizations on how to support children and families who have experienced grief and other adversity. Camara is a former Marketing Executive at HBO, where she directed a team and developed strategy for sales marketing initiatives to promote the HBO brand worldwide. Through varying approaches, including event marketing, branding promotions, tech initiatives, and tradeshow execution, Camara’s team helped to garner over $500 million in sales each year. Camara holds a B.A. in English from Spelman College, as well as an M.S. in Integrated Marketing and an M.A. in Counseling for Mental Health and Wellness from New York University.
Trustees
Kimberlee Phelan (Trustee) Born and raised in Southern California, Kimberlee Phelan spent a year as an exchange student in Norway before heading East to attend Wellesley College. After a year in finance in New York City, she was moved back to California and received her MBA from The Andersen School at UCLA. After graduating from UCLA, she moved back East (again), and has been resident in Princeton since 1991. She is a Partner and the Practice Leader of International Services at Withum Smith + Brown, a super-regional public accounting firm, where she has practiced for 25 years. She enjoys traveling (with her fiancé, Mark – they will be married in August, 2022), knitting and the performing arts. She has four children. Her oldest daughter received a BFA from NYS/Tisch, and her second daughter is a Principal Dancer with New York City Ballet. She also has two sons, one in his first year of Medical School at RWJ/Rutgers and the youngest in the third year of an Architecture degree at The Pratt Institute. Kimberlee has previously served on the board of The Princeton Youth Fund, the Princeton Area Community Foundation, the Princeton YWCA and Learning Ally. She is very excited to be joining the GSP board!

Jackie Burns (Pearl Kantrowitz) is a bi-coastal actress who holds the title of Broadway’s longest running Elphaba in WICKED. She is the face of the brand. She has also played Elphaba on the National Tour, where her performance received an Irene Award nomination. She replaced Tony Award® winning Idina Menzel in the national tour of If/Then where she received rave reviews for her performance and was also a part of the original Broadway company. Her other Broadway and off- Broadway credits include the Tony Award-winning revival of Hair (original Broadway company member) and Rock of Ages (original Off-Broadway company member) Jackie can be heard on the cast recordings for Hair, Island Song, A Killer Party and has done over 50 demos for upcoming musicals. The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, won a National Board of Review Award, and the original screenplay won the Samuel Goldwyn Writing Award and a Golden Satellite nomination. Sharon Karmazin (Production Sponsor) has been a GSP Board member for 25+ years. He has directed 43 mainstage productions at GSP, having most recently helmed Ken Ludwig’s Dear Jack, Dear Louise. Additional productions include Fully Committed and Tiny Beautiful Things for the GSP virtual season, Midwives, and Conscience, in addition to The Trial of Donna Caine, American Hero, American Son, I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change and An Act of God starring the legendary Kathleen Turner in the 2017-18 season. His time here has been marked by collaborations with such artists as Keith Carradine, Tyne Daly, Rachel Dratch, Sandy Duncan, Boyd Gaines, A.R. He also has directed on Broadway, off-Broadway and regionally at Playwrights Horizons, Manhattan Theatre Club, Primary Stages, McCarter, Williamstown, Seattle Rep, Pasadena Playhouse, Pittsburg Public, Long Wharf and many others by such writers as Aaron Sorkin, Wendy Wasserstein, Peter Parnell, Jonathan Marc Sherman, Joe DiPietro and Jonathan Larson. He is the recipient of the Alan Schneider Award, Helen Hayes Award, L.A.,
Drama Critics Award, several Drama-Logue Awards and is the President of The Laurents/ Hatcher Foundation. Kelly Ryman (Managing Director) is celebrating her 21st season with George Street Playhouse, having recently led the company through a transformative chapter in its history—overseeing the planning, construction and operations of the move to its interim home on Rutgers Cook Campus in 2017 as well as the move back downtown as a Founding Resident Company of New Brunswick Performing Arts Center. From 2000 to 2013, as the company’s Director of Marketing and Public Relations, she spearheaded promotional efforts that resulted in the top ten-highest grossing productions in the Playhouse’s history, including the hit musical It Shoulda Been You which moved to Broadway in 2015. Off-Broadway, Kelly was a member of the marketing team for The Toxic Avenger, which premiered at George Street Playhouse and went on to win the 2009 Outer Critics’ Circle Award for Best New Musical. Active in the non-profit arts community throughout New Jersey, she was the Central NJ Chair of Jersey Arts Marketers for over a decade. She is a member of the board of the New Jersey Theater Alliance and serves on the Board of Directors of New Brunswick City Center and is an adjunct professor of Arts and Entertainment Business at Mercer County College. Prior to her tenure at George Street Playhouse, Ms. Ryman worked at McCarter Theatre and The Wilma Theater. Kelly was recognized in 2012 by ArtPride NJ with their Leadership Award.

Over the course of the production, fellows took paid assistant roles in creative departments, received professional mentorship and guidance, and have access to broader holistic support from The Workshop’s leadership. Clare Fuyuko Bierman (Script Assistant, Playwriting Fellow) is a playwright and lyricist raised in a JapaneseJewish home with some rabbits, a snake, and a bunch of finches. Current commissions include Yoko’s Husband’s Killer’s Japanese Wife, Gloria (Book by Brandy Hoang Collier, Music by Erika Ji, Winner of 5th Avenue Theater’s First Draft Commission), and Theseus and the Minotaur and the Other Six (Music by Joshua Vranas, Youth Theater Northwest). Originally from Los Angeles, she received her MFA from New York University. www.clarebierman.com Gabriella Pérez (Directing/ Choreography Fellow) Gabby is a Latinx Jewish actor and choreographer in NYC. As an actor, she has performed off-Broadway, on national tours, and in regional theaters across the country.
