The Arthur Laurents Theater The intimate Arthur Laurents Theater, featuring 252 seats and all the amenities for producing riveting new dramas and hilarious new comedies, is named for longtime friend of George Street Playhouse, awardwinning playwright and author Arthur Laurents.

“Arthur always said George Street Playhouse was his favorite theater,” our Artistic Director David Saint remarked. “It is fitting that this brilliant artist, who contributed profoundly to the theater and film canons, will be honored in this way.

Arthur was a true friend, and it means so much to this community that his name will be etched into this extraordinary performing arts center that George Street Playhouse calls home.”

Arthur Laurents is well-known as the acclaimed writer of the books for musicals such as Gypsy and West Side Story, and the screenplays The Way We Were and The Turning Point. He premiered nine of his plays at George Street Playhouse.

The Laurents/Hatcher Foundation, named for Arthur Laurents and his partner Tom Hatcher, gifted $2.75 million, which will support George Street’s ongoing commitment to the development and production of new plays and musicals, the cornerstones of George Street Playhouse’s national reputation.

Often when I’m on vacation and have a moment to catch up on my reading other than the usual new plays, I love a good novel, and specifically a suspenseful one.

When I find a writer I like I tend to immediately buy a few other works by the same author. Such was the case with Chris Bohjalian, the successful writer of suspense novels who has had more than 20 books on the New York Times Bestselling Lists.

It just so happened, Alison Fraser, my old friend noticed a book of his on my table and mentioned that she was friendly with him, having recorded a couple of his books on tape. She told me he was interested in adapting his work for the stage and we should meet.

After hitting it off, he gave me a new play he had adapted from his Oprah Book Club Bestseller “Midwives.”

I was thrilled that he was interested in us producing it here at George Street as a world premiere.

It was equally thrilling to have the remarkable Ellen McLaughlin join us again to play the midwife Sybil, along with several other outstanding GSP alumni and a few newcomers to our stage who together create a first rate cast to bring this powerful and provocative story to life.

They have joined a superb group of designers who have managed to evoke a complex and evocative setting to amplify this tale of difficult choices in the midst of crisis.

It is very fulfilling to present this new work in our beautiful new theatre named after that champion of new work in the theatre, Arthur Laurents.

David Saint (Director/Artistic Director) is in his 23rd season as Artistic Director of George Street Playhouse. Catherine Del Castillo is one of George Street Playhouse’s newest staff members, having joined the Education Department as Manager of Tour and Academy Programs just before we moved operations into the New Brunswick Performing Arts Center. Calling Long Island ‘home,’ Catherine is embracing her new life here in New Jersey and in the world of Touring Theatre and Academy classes. Talking to her feels like talking to an old friend, and we had the chance to learn more about Cat over a cup of tea on a rainy day:

What do you work on at George Street Playhouse?

I handle the outreach and booking for our Educational Catherine Del Castillo Touring shows in schools and community centers Manager of Tour and Academy Programs Right now it’s Anytown. I’m also the link between the student (or parent) and the Teaching Artists for all of our Academy classes. Say hello to me during Saturday classes!

Why arts education?

I’ve always loved arts education. It’s joyful. It’s fun. It’s a medium that can empower people to think about who they are, who they want to be, and what they want to say about the world. I earned my Master’s in Applied Theatre at CUNY SPS – that’s where I fell in love with being a Teaching Artist. I worked as a Teaching Artist all over New York City for seven years – in classrooms with students who just immigrated to the U.S.; in workshop sessions for parent engagement; and in homeless shelters, libraries, and museums to bolster socialemotional learning and literacy.

GSP’s Education Department operates from a place of integrity, putting the needs of our students and youth first. My colleagues here have this innate fearless desire to grow and learn, and they’re always open to change. That work environment – what makes this educational programming different from other places I’ve worked – goes hand-in-hand with what we’re putting into our work. I’m so excited to work here.

Any interesting jobs you’ve had outside of being a Teaching Artist?

I worked as an usher at Radio City Music Hall during Radio City Christmas Spectacular.

Did you know there’s all these really bizarre tunnels underneath the stage? That’s where the living nativity hangs out. It’s literally another city underground. If I got to work early enough I would share an elevator with a goat. They would also walk the camels outside before the performances - just, like, taking laps around Rockefeller Center bright and early in the morning.

Joe DiPietro’s Clever Little Lies and It Shoulda Been You. He has directed Final Follies at Primary Stages, Clever Little Lies at Guild Hall in East Hampton, NY, and off-Broadway at Westside Theatre, as well as the National Tour of West Side Story. In July 2016, he directed a twonight concert performance of West Side Story at the legendary Hollywood Bowl. In Summer 2019, he directed a revolutionary new production of West Side Story for IHI Stage Around in Tokyo and currently serves as a Associate Producer for a new film version of West Side Story directed by Steven Spielberg. He also has directed on Broadway, off-Broadway and regionally at Playwrights Horizons, Manhattan Theatre Club, Primary Stages, McCarter, Williamstown, Seattle Rep, Pasadena Playhouse, Pittsburgh Public, Long Wharf and many others on premieres by writers such as Aaron Sorkin, Wendy Wasserstein, Peter Parnell, Jonathan Marc Sherman, Joe DiPietro and Jonathan Larson. He is the recipient of the Alan Schneider Award, Helen Hayes Award, L.A. Drama Critics Award, several DramaLogue Awards and is the President of The Laurents/Hatcher Foundation.

Shoko Kambara (Set Designer) is celebrating her 20 year career in design for stage and film this year. Recent theatrical work includes Native Gardens (Syracuse Stage/Geva Theatre/Portland Stage), Little Girl Blue (George Street Playhouse), Into the Woods (Hangar Theatre), Holiday Inn (Finger Lakes Musical Theater Festival), Always Patsy Cline (FLMTF), Guys and Dolls (FLMTF).

Lisa Zinni (Costume Designer) Lisa is a New York based designer, a Philadelphia native and happy to be a part of George Streets first season in the new theatre.

Broadway Credits include Freestyle Love Supreme, associate costume designer for School of Rock, Cats, An American in Paris, The Play that Goes Wrong, The Glass Menagerie, Rent and Hair. Other Design Credits include the groundbreaking production of West Side Story at the IHI Stage Around in Tokyo Japan Directed by David Saint, Remember Our Song, a new work created and choreographed by Andy Blankenbuehler for the Tulsa Ballet. Kelly Ryman (Managing Director) is celebrating her 20 th season with George Street Playhouse, having recently led the company through a transformative chapter in its history – overseeing the planning, construction and operations of the move to its interim home on Rutgers Cook Campus in 2017 as well as the move back downtown as a Founding Resident Company of New Brunswick Performing Arts Center. From 2000 to 2013, as the company’s Director of Marketing and Public Relations, she spearheaded promotional efforts that resulted in the top ten-highest grossing productions in the Playhouse’s history, including the hit musical It Shoulda Been You which moved to Broadway in 2015. Off-Broadway, Kelly was a member of the marketing team for The Toxic Avenger, which premiered at George Street Playhouse and went on to win the 2009 Outer Critics’ Circle Award for Best New Musical. Active in the non-profit arts community throughout New Jersey, she was the Central NJ Chair of Jersey Arts Marketers for over a decade. She serves on the Board of Directors of New Brunswick City Center and is an adjunct professor of Arts and Entertainment Business at Mercer County College. Prior to her tenure at George Street Playhouse, Ms. Ryman worked at McCarter Theatre and The Wilma Theater. Kelly was recognized in 2012 by ArtPride NJ with their Leadership Award and is a 2015 recipient of the Middlesex County Boy Scouts of America “Tribute to Women” Award. She is the Vice-Chair of the New Brunswick Arts Consortium Advisory Committee.

Q: What was your motivation to turn Midwives into a play? What was it like to pick up a novel you wrote 22 years ago, and explore it in a new way?

I love theatre. I love the stage. But for most of my life, I presumed I was a one-trick pony. I wrote novels.

But when a friend of mine, the playwright, screenwriter, and director Alexander Dinelaris, encouraged me to try a one-act, I did. And I had a spectacular time.

The result was Grounded — now called Wingspan — and what I enjoyed about the writing process was knowing that while a lot had to be conveyed by dialogue, a great director and a great production team and great actors could handle the real heavy lifting. Yes, a play begins with the playwright, but it only begins with the playwright. It’s a collaboration that is really exciting.

So, after writing a one act, the next natural step in my growth as a playwright seemed to be trying to adapt one of my novels. Midwives was the natural choice because I have always loved courtroom dramas on stage.

Now, Midwives was my fifth novel; my twenty-first, The Red Lotus, arrives in March 2020.

I’ve never been shy about admitting that I’m not a fan of my early work: I’m responsible for the single worst first novel ever published, bar none. It was my fourth and fifth novels, Water Witches and Midwives, where I began to find my voice. I think by then I had reached that great Malcolm Gladwell barometer of ten-thousand hours. I had to have gotten better, if only through practice and force of will. But I was pleased at how well Midwives had survived the test of time. It still worked as a story and I was thrilled with the way the universal themes still resonated: birth and death and the horrific nexus of the two.

I wrote Midwives soon after my wife’s and my daughter was born and as my mother was dying. It’s no coincidence that two mothers we care about in the novel die. All of that influenced what I was writing: every page, in hindsight, and (forgive me) every twist of the knife. It was the first time I understood why I loved reading some novels so much more than others and what was always going to drive people to turn the pages of my books: dread. Whether I am writing historical fiction such as The Sandcastle Girls or a thriller like The Flight Attendant, the fulcrum around which everything is going to turn is (at the very least) anxiety.

And so I when I adapted Midwives for the stage, I never wanted to lose that. I realize that many people in the audience will know how it ends from reading the novel, but

(of course) we know also that the Titanic sinks and Lady Macbeth is going to die.

Nevertheless, I was careful to structure the play to ramp up the tension with critical moments of foreshadowing.

But I also view Midwives as a mother-daughter love story – how deeply Sibyl and Connie care for each other – and that, too, is a factor in the novel’s longevity. I wanted to be sure you could also feel that in the play.

Q: How was writing Midwives, as a play, different (or similar) to writing your first play, Grounded (now Wingspan)?

The principal difference was this: my first play occurs in one scene in “real time.”

There are no jump-cuts in time or transitions or movements to different venues.

It’s an original play that I conceived as occurring at the front of a passenger jet in the moments before takeoff and then during the flight’s first minutes.

Midwives is an adaptation of a novel that occurs over many months. But it really has two principal settings: the bedroom where the home birth occurs and the courtroom where the midwife stands trial. And so I decided to approach the material a bit like I did my first play: Act One would be the birth and Act Two would be the trial. There are jump-cuts and scenes within each act, but — like my first play — I wanted each act to be its own world.

Q: What are your hopes and expectations for the stage adaptation of Midwives?

Oh, I hope people enjoy it and are moved.

But I also wanted to do this in the stage version: bring some additional focus to the way that Sibyl Danforth is being bullied by men and the way that men, for so long, have commandeered control of birth and of women’s bodies and women’s birthing choices. And so, in act two, you will see a lot of mansplaining and a lot of men behaving badly – but also, I believe, the courage of a couple of women who, pure and simple, have had enough.

Q: So far, what has been your favorite aspect of the “page to stage” experience?

Do you see yourself adapting more of your novels for the stage?

Writing a novel is a solitary process. Certainly, I talk about it with my editor, my book agent, and my wife and my daughter — my principal readers; and, yes, there are always people I interview for research. But the vast majority of the time I am alone in my library and my world is utterly silent.

Playwriting is different: it’s team art. I’ve loved working with directors such as David Saint and Sheryl Kaller and Alexander Dinelaris, all of whom are brilliant, and I’ve savored my time with actors — watching them bring the characters to life. With their help, I see what’s working and what isn’t. I think that’s been my favorite part of the experience.

I’ve now written four plays, only one of which is an adaptation of one of my novels. At the moment, the only other one of my novels I can imagine adapting is Close Your Eyes, Hold Hands. But that’s what I’m thinking today. Tomorrow? Who knows.
