From the Artistic Director It gives me such pride to open my Twentieth Anniversary season here at George Street with a thrilling new play for the American Theatre.

Often plays will come to me through artists with whom we have developed a strong working relationship. Mama’s Boy, Rob Urbinati’s fascinating examination of one of America’s most notorious families, the Oswalds, came to David Saint Artistic Director me through the marvelous actress Betsy Aidem.

I first worked with Betsy on Arthur Laurents’ drama Jolson Sings Again (Arthur called her “the real thing”) and then again on the dark comedy God of Carnage. Both were produced here at GSP. It was clearly a great role for Betsy! I described it recently as a combination of Amanda from The Glass Menagerie and Medea.

But I also marveled at the play itself. Drawing on a tremendous amount of actual interviews and transcripts including the Warren Commission, Mr. Urbinati has been able to fashion a riveting drama about a struggling American family as they came to terms with a volatile period in this country’s history in the face of one of the most horrifying events of the century – the assassination of President Kennedy.

Together with a sensational cast (including last season’s Asher Lev, Miles G. Jackson) and a first rate design team, I am confident you will be as enthralled with this powerful and complex work as I am.

Thank you for embracing so many new works in the past twenty years.

Rob Urbinati (Playwright) is a freelance director and playwright based in New York City. He has directed at The Public Theater, Culture Project, Abingdon Theatre, Classic Stage Company, The Pearl Theatre, Lincoln Center Directors Lab, New York Music Theatre Festival, New York University and theatres and universities across the country. He is Director of New Play Development at Queens Theatre. Ken Billington (Lighting Designer) has almost 100 Broadway shows to his credit, including such theatre milestones as Sweeney Todd and the current production of Chicago, the longest running American musical in history. Current tours include Chicago (worldwide), Annie, 42nd Street, and White Christmas. Other projects include Hugh Jackman in Concert, the Shamu shows for the Seaworld parks, and from 1979 to 2006 the Radio City Music Hall Christmas Spectacular. His many awards include the Tony, NY Drama Desk, Outer Critics Awards, the Ace award for Television lighting, and the Lumen for his architectural lighting for New York’s Tavern on the Green. This past year he was inducted into the Theatre Hall of Fame.

Michael Mastro (Resident Artistic Director) enters his second season as GSP’s Resident Artistic Director. Here at GSP, he helmed last season’s Nureyev’s Eyes, 2014’s The Fabulous Lipitones and 2011’s The Subject Was Roses with Stephanie Zimbalist. He has also appeared on our stage in such productions as The Sunshine Boys, The Pillowman, The Fox on the Fairway and Inspecting Carol. In recent years, he has directed Ingmar Bergman’s Nora at Delaware Theatre Company,

where he was Associate Artistic Director, and appeared in Ayckbourn’s The Things We Do For Love at the Westport Country Playhouse. He has also helmed several NYC celebrity play readings to benefit various nonprofits, working with actors like Zachary Quinto, Bernadette Peters, Jean Smart, Beau Bridges, Michael McKean, Stockard Channing, Melissa Leo, Laura Benanti, Cynthia Nixon, John Slattery and Cecily Strong. Other directorial assignments include associate director of the recent first national tour of West Side Story, helmed by David Saint, as well as the direction of many new American one-acts for several NYC theatre companies. As an actor, he works regularly on and off Broadway, regionally, and in film and TV, where he is currently recurring on Law & Order: SVU. Kelly Ryman (Managing Director) was appointed Managing Director in July 2013. She served as Director of Marketing and Public Relations at George Street Playhouse since 2000, spearheading promotional efforts resulting in the top 10-highest grossing productions in the Playhouse’s history, including the hit musical It Shoulda Been You, which ran on Broadway in early 2015. Off-Broadway, Kelly was a member of the marketing team for The Toxic Avenger, which won the 2009 Outer Critics’ Circle Award for Best New Musical. She serves on the Board of Directors of New Brunswick City Market as well as the Advisory Board of Elijah’s Promise. Prior to her tenure at George Street Playhouse, Ms. Ryman worked at McCarter Theatre and The Wilma Theatre.

She is an adjunct professor of Arts and Entertainment Business at Mercer County Community College, and was recognized in 2012 by ArtPride NJ with their Arts Leadership Award for her service to the

The Blanche & Irving Laurie Foundation was established in 1983

by New Brunswick philanthropist Irving Laurie. The Foundation supports a variety of projects across broad issue areas. The 2016/2017 program of cultural support currently includes the Paley Center for Media’s programs on the 2016 Presidential election; the 2016/2017 Drew Forum – New Jersey’s most prestigious ongoing speakers series ; the New Group’s revival of Sweet Charity; Roundabout Theatre Company’s production of Irving Berlin’s Holiday Inn; New York City Center’s famed Encores! Series; the public television series American Masters; NJPAC’s American Song series; various programs

relating to the Centennial celebration of President John F. Kennedy’s birth; and the Film Society of Lincoln Center’s 54rd Annual New York Film Festival. In other aspects of the Foundation’s funding interests, ongoing projects include capital renovation projects at Rutgers Hillel, the acquisition of a Proton Beam Radiotherapy System at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, and various social service programs attending to the interests of New Jersey residents. The Foundation was gratified to have been selected as the Outstanding Foundation of 2016 by the New Jersey Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals. It is proud to report that the Foundation has provided approximately $73,000,000 in grants to philanthropic endeavors, addressing the Foundation’s interest in the arts, education, health care and social services.

Lee Harvey Oswald a brief timeline

1939, Oct. 18: Lee Harvey Oswald is born in New Orleans, Louisiana, the son of Marguerite and Robert Oswald, Sr. Two months before his birth, his father dies of a heart attack. Marguerite Oswald is left alone to care for Lee and his two older brothers — Robert Jr. and his half-brother, John Pic. 1942: Marguerite sends the boys into an orphanage and later to boarding school. Lee is rejected at first because he is too young. But his mother reapplies and sends him off to the orphanage after he turns four.

1952: At age 12, Lee and his mother move to New York City, 1955: Lee joins the Civil Air Patrol, a youth auxiliary of the Air Force.

He tries to lie his way into the Marines but is rejected as too young.

1956: Lee enlists in the Marines at the height of the Cold War. 1959: Lee receives his GED certificate.

Aug. 17: Lee requests a hardship discharge from the Marines.

Oct.: Lee defects to the U.S.S.R.

1961: John F. Kennedy is sworn in as President of the United States.

Jan. 26: Lee’s mother arrives at the White House to ask for help in locating her son.

Feb. 13: Disillusioned with life in the Soviet Union, Lee notifies the U.S. Embassy that he wishes to return to America.

Apr. 30: Lee marries Marina Prusakova

1962, Jun. 2: Lee gets permission from Soviet and U.S. authorities to return to the U.S. with Marina and their daughter, June. The Oswalds move in with Lee’s brother in Fort Worth, Texas.

Oct. 12: Lee starts working for a photo lab.

Oct. 22: The six-day Cuban Missile Crisis begins.

1963, April 6: Lee is fired from the photography company and departs for New Orleans.

Oct. 14: Lee moves to Dallas, Texas and starts work at the Texas School Book Depository.

Oct. 18: Lee Harvey Oswald turns 24.

Every component has been upgraded, from the headsets to the personal receivers to the Broadway–class microphones on the stage.

There are now options for different types of headsets — for patrons who use hearing aids equipped with a T-coil, we now have a “loop” transmitter. You can choose the option that works best for you.

We have also increased the number of available headsets, including additional units for audio-described performances.

LATE SEATING POLICY The theatre is open to the public one halfhour prior to the performance. In consideration of all patrons, latecomers will be seated at the discretion of House Management. Late patrons will be seated in the best available seating at an appropriate break or interval during the performance.

RECORDING EQUIPMENT Due to copyright and union regulations and restrictions, still cameras, video cameras or any type of recording equipment is not permitted at any time in the theatre and will be confiscated.

SMOKING The Playhouse is a smoke-free environment.
