GSP started in June with an empty exhibit hall.

Since we moved from 9 Livingston Avenue at the end of May 2017 to make way for construction of the New Brunswick Performing Arts Center, George Street Playhouse staff has spent the summer months transforming the former New Jersey State Agricultural Museum into a working professional theatre.

The building now houses our costume and props shops, administrative offices, rehearsal and classroom spaces and, of course, the theatre.

Hundreds of hours of planning and building went into the creation of this new performance space, starting with an empty exhibit hall and adding a stage, seating platforms, lighting and stage management control booth, trussing and electrical transformers to support and power the lighting and sound equipment.

The board and staff of George Street Playhouse are delighted to welcome you to our interim home “George Street Playhouse at College Farm Road.�

Painting and stage-building commenced in early August.

By mid-August, construction began on the control booth and seating area.

The lighting truss and seats were installed in September.

From the Artistic Director It is an extraordinary time for us here at George Street.

We are realizing a long held dream of building a new performing arts center on our old site on Livingston Avenue.

We plan to open there in two years and for these next two seasons we are thrilled to be producing here on the Cook/Douglass campus in a brand new theatre space on College Farm Road, home of the former Agricultural Museum.

We owe much thanks to all the people at Rutgers who have helped make this possible.

To open this exciting new space I asked an old friend of George Street, Tony Award-winner, Joe DiPietro, to take a fresh look at his and composer Jimmy Roberts’ long running New York hit I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change and give it a new 2017 update for both the score and book and try it out here.

The results have been thoroughly gratifying and hysterical. Together with a remarkable cast and creative team they have fashioned a winning new look at this world of dating, marriage, and growing old together that is sure to delight our audiences as we venture into this exciting new stage of life for us at George Street.

I am so pleased to offer you a charming new space so close to our home and present you with an unforgettable night of joyous and heartwarming entertainment.

COMPANY bios. with Marlo Thomas. He was seen on Broadway in Honeymoon in Vegas, South Pacific, and High Fidelity. Recent regional roles include Albert Peterson in Bye Bye, Birdie! at the Goodspeed Opera House, and John Adams in 1776 at the Pittsburgh Public Theatre. On TV, George has appeared on Blue Bloods, The Blacklist, and the upcoming Rise on NBC. His film credits include The Intern with Robert DeNiro and So Good to See You (2016 Sundance selection). George is also a lyricist in the BMI Musical Theater Workshop, and is a Harrington Prize recipient.

Joe DiPietro (Book and Lyrics) Previously at George Street Playhouse: The Second Mrs. Wilson, The Toxic Avenger, Creating Claire, Clever Little Lies and Ernest Shackleton Loves Me. He is a two-time Tony Award winner for Memphis, which also received the 2010 Tony, Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle Awards for Best Musical.

He received a Tony nomination and Drama Desk Award for Nice Work If You Can Get It. His comedy Clever Little Lies, which stars Marlo Thomas and premiered at GSP in 2013, ran offBroadway under the direction of GSP Artistic Director David Saint in late 2015.

He also wrote the long-running offBroadway hits, I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change and Over the River and Through the Woods.

Jimmy Roberts (Music) composed the music for the original I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change, second longest-running off-Broadway musical in New York theater history. It has

since played all 50 states and over 25 countries around the world. Mr. Roberts also composed The Thing About Men (2003, New York Outer Critics Circle award for Best Musical). His latest show, All Dressed Up and Nowhere to Go, written with Catherine Filloux and John Daggett, and directed by Hannah Ryan (resident director of Hamilton) was presented at an exciting reading for the Broadway community in September. His children’s musical, The Velveteen Rabbit, toured the United States for well over a decade. Among his recent compositions is a commissioned work: The Heart of the Matter, words by former NEA chairman and poet Dana Gioia (Guggenheim Museum).

Another new musical, Rex and Lilli and The Master, about the lives and careers of Rex Harrison, Lilli Palmer, and Noel Coward, and written with playwright Carey Harrison (Rex’s son), is also in preparation. He is a graduate of the Manhattan School of Music, where he studied with noted pianist, Constance Keene.

David Saint (Director/Artistic Director) enters his 21st season as Artistic Director of George Street Playhouse.

I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change marks his 37th mainstage productions at GSP, having most recently helmed last season’s American Son and Mama’s Boy. Technical Coordinator and Sound and Lighting Manager. He was recently Lighting Designer for GSP’s production of Bad Jews, Daddy Long Legs, My Name is Asher Lev, Sex With Strangers, Nureyev’s Eyes and Clever Little Lies, which moved to the Guild Hall Theatre in East Hampton and then off-Broadway to the Westside Theatre. He was Sound Designer for GSP’s American Son and off-Broadway productions of The Fourth Wall at Primary Stages and Down the Garden Paths at the Minetta Lane Theatre. His work includes 6 scenic designs and 9 sound designs for GSP’s Educational Touring productions and 24 lighting designs and 40 sound designs for GSP’s mainstage production.

Kelly Ryman (Managing Director) is now in her 18th season at George Street Playhouse. As Director of Marketing and Public Relations from 2000 to 2013, Kelly spearheaded promotional efforts resulting in the top-10 highest-grossing productions in the Playhouse’s history, including the hit musical It Shoulda Been You, which ran on Broadway in early 2015. OffBroadway, Kelly was a member of the marketing team for The Toxic Avenger, which premiered at GSP and won the 2009 Outer Critics’ Circle Award for Best New Musical. She serves on the Board of Directors of New Brunswick City Market as well the Advisory Board of Elijah’s Promise. Prior to her tenure at George Street Playhouse, Ms. Ryman worked at McCarter Theatre, and The Wilma Theatre. She is an adjunct professor of Arts and Entertainment Business at Mercer County Community College, and was recognized in 2012

by ArtPride NJ with their Jersey Arts Marketers Leadership Award.
