hat a journey it has been as we prepare for our 45th season this coming October in the amazing New Brunswick Performing Arts Center, which is rapidly progressing to completion, as I’m sure you saw coming here tonight. Our 45 year journey has taken us from our beginnings at a former Acme supermarket, to a converted YMCA, and for the last two years to the Cook campus of Rutgers at what we affectionately refer to as “The Farm.” The Farm has served us well, and we are very thankful to Rutgers for their wonderful support during this transition period. It has continued to let us be George Street Playhouse to the fullest. We have others to thank for sustaining us on our journey. It starts with our patrons, who enthusiastically stayed with us during our two-year hiatus from downtown New Brunswick. Tonight’s Gala Sponsors also greatly contribute to our journey - many of them have supported us for many years. Our honorees this year are very special. I believe that the Middlesex County Freeholders are a most unique and unparalleled government organization in supporting the growth and richness of the Arts throughout Middlesex County by putting forth a Cultural Trust Fund in 2015, which was widely supported by voters. It has resulted in great support to 103 County Arts organizations and most certainly to us at a very high level - a wonderful boost to our programming. Cecelia Joyce and Seward Johnson are leaders in Arts and Culture nationally and internationally. We enjoy seeing one of Seward’s favorite sculptures “The Magic Fountain” when we enter the Bristol-Myers Children’s Hospital here in New Brunswick. This delightful sculpture depicts children misbehaving. Paramount among Cecelia and Seward’s gifts to NJ is the founding of Grounds for Sculpture, which also displays many of his wonderful creations. Cecelia and Seward Johnson are most deserving honorees and have also provided great sponsorship support for our Gala - many thanks. So, our journey soon brings us to performing in a venue that was not converted space, but one that has been designed for wonderful staging, music and acting. Stay tuned - David Saint, our Artistic Director, will bring you all of that and much more. Our 45th season is one ride on our journey that you don’t want to miss. Kean Arts Advocacy Award to two magnanimous patrons of the Arts: Cecelia Joyce and Seward Johnson and The Middlesex County Board of Chosen Freeholders. Both have shown through their history a dedicated responsibility to fostering the Arts here in New Jersey. ecelia Joyce Johnson is a published author and producer. Her theatre work includes several off-Broadway plays including Savannah Bay at Theater for the New City, Fathers and Sons by Richard Hoehler at the Lion Theatre on Theatre Row and Omnium Gatherum, which was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize. Her work in music includes creative collaborations with Larry Moss and Clint Holmes at Cafe Carlyle and a series developed for PBS on Chopin in collaboration with Australian Pianist Alan Kogosowski. Mrs. Johnson has served on many boards and is currently on the Board of Directors of the Martin E. Segal Theatre Center and the Nantucket Film Festival. Internationally renowned artist Seward Johnson, whose lifelike bronze and monumental figures are familiar sights throughout the United States, Europe, and Asia, is often hailed as “America’s most popular sculptor.” He has made a significant impact on the landscape of public art, with more than 300 works in cast bronze featured in public spaces, sculpture gardens, private collections, and museums across the globe.
Key among his work is the Icons Revisited series, including Embracing Peace, the Times Square embracing couple and the head-turning Forever Marilyn. His impact on the arts goes beyond his personal works and includes his founding of the Johnson Atelier and the spectacular Grounds For Sculpture. He was inducted into the New Jersey Hall of Fame in 2014. The Johnsons are noted philanthropists whose generosity has benefited the arts world and beyond.

n 2017, The Middlesex County Board of Chosen Freeholders, under the leadership of Freeholder Director Ronald G. Rios, made an unprecedented landmark commitment to the arts by establishing the Middlesex County Arts and Cultural Trust Fund and by approving a strategic Regional Cultural Plan to guide investment of significant resources and help bring arts and history to greater audiences. The Plan serves as a roadmap to guide the County through the year 2020 and achieve its aspiration, that all residents of Middlesex County have the opportunity to access and participate in the arts, culture and history that can enrich their lives.
OUR NEW HOME In the Fall of 2019, George Street Playhouse will move into the New Brunswick Performing Arts Center currently under construction in downtown New Brunswick. Featuring TWO state-of-the-art theaters – The Arthur Laurents Theater and The Elizabeth Ross Johnson Theater – the NBPAC offers all the modern amenities including barrier-free access, elevators, expanded restrooms, modern climate control, new seating, and up-to-date theatrical technology. Our new modern home also includes several rehearsal rooms, a donor lounge, and lobby space on two floors.
The Elizabeth Ross Johnson Theater features 463 seats, an orchestra pit, and other exciting amenities.
The Arthur Laurents Theater features 259 seats and is perfect for new works and engaging dramas.

CREATIVITY,
COLLABORATION & ARTISTRY
Since 1988, George Street Playhouse’s Education Department has enriched the lives of over one million students throughout New Jersey. Our Educational Touring Theatre, Residency Programs, and Theatre Academy cultivate imagination, enhance collaboration, and develop confident young people through the art of theatre. Our programs positively impacted over 25,000 students and families this year.
Educational Touring Theatre George Street Playhouse commissions and produces dynamic educational touring theatre that explores the issues that students face every day of their lives. This season, four actors and a stage manager traveled over 6,500 miles to perform for more than 21,000 students in 65 schools across New Jersey. Our touring productions help students understand the power of making positive choices when confronting difficult issues of bullying, prejudice, and substance abuse disorder. This fall, we launched our latest commission Anytown, a new musical about the opioid crisis in New Jersey. Based on interviews with individuals and families struggling with this disease, experts in opioid abuse prevention, and public health professionals, this musical provides an honest look at the complexities of this national epidemic and how we can provide students with the tools to prevent this disease.
EDUCATION DEPARTMENT
School-based Residency Programs School-based residency programs bring acting and playwriting into the classroom to better understand such topics as the Civil Rights Movement, the American Revolution and the Holocaust. Students develop artistic expression, enhance literacy, and build collaboration skills as they explore theatre to bring characters, setting and stories to life. This process leads to improved social/emotional growth and academic achievement. Our residency programs received a Citation of Excellence from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts and reached more than 3,500 students in 140 classrooms across New Jersey.
Theatre Academy Our Theatre Academy celebrates the art of theatre. Whether exploring musicals, improvisation, or playwriting, students engage creativity, collaboration, and the power of their imagination to bring characters and stories to life. This past year, through the generous support of our donors, we offered $25,000 in needbased scholarships for students to participate in our Academy programs; students who otherwise would not have been able to attend. Each day we see the difference your support makes in the lives of the students who participate in George Street Playhouse’s educational programs.
