George Street Playhouse commissions and produces dynamic educational touring theatre for young audiences. Our touring productions address themes such as respect, bullying, conflict resolution, and substance abuse prevention. Each show includes a post-play workshop, which provides an excellent starting point for classroom discussion and can be used to fulfill Common Core Curriculum Content Standards.

TOURING THEATRE
When an immigrant family from a fictitious place called Homeland arrives in America, they discover a new culture and unexpected prejudice. This clever play’s device has the Homelanders speaking English and the Americans speaking a made-up gibberish language, allowing the audience to understand what it is like to be overwhelmed by a new language and new customs. By addressing themes of bullying, prejudice, conflict resolution and immigration, New Kid is an ideal presentation for multi-cultural celebrations, conflict-resolution programs, and other school events. Based on a concept by Jane Howard Baker, originally produced as New Canadian Kid by Green Thumb Theatre for Young People, British Columbia. All rights should be directed to Green Thumb Theatre.

Star athlete Hope Baker sports a 4.0 GPA and limitless potential. But when a boy she likes offers her one little pill to reduce the pain from a soccer injury, Hope makes a decision that rapidly transforms her dreams into an escalating nightmare. With her future at stake, will Hope get the help she needs before opioids destroy everything she cares about? Based on interviews with families struggling with the disease of addiction, opioid prevention experts, law enforcement officials, and educators, this original musical will empower audiences with the knowledge to make positive decisions to avoid substance abuse. Anytown was developed in partnership with the Horizon Foundation for New Jersey and RWJBarnabas Health in response to the devastating impact prescription opioid misuse, heroin, and fentanyl have had on communities throughout New Jersey. Key research and feedback during the development of this musical was provided by RWJBarnabas Health’s Institute for Prevention and Recovery and Partnership for a Drug-Free New Jersey.

THEATRE ARTS Integration in the Classroom
Our Teaching Artists work with over 3,000 students in more than 140 classrooms annually. Students read and respond to multiple fiction and non-fiction texts, imagine and embody characters and settings, and work together as an ensemble to create original pieces of theatre. This process builds confident speakers, empathetic learners, and effective collaborators. Teachers and administrators in districts throughout New Jersey find GSP’s residencies provide imaginative, differentiated learning instruction for pre-K-12 students that are designed to meet the curricular goals of the classroom.
THEATRE AT THE CORE
This ten-session residency investigates how theatre practice can enhance understanding of core curriculum content. Whether exploring a unit on the American Revolution, immigration, or mythology, our teaching artists will partner with you to create dynamic learning opportunities for your students.
ENSEMBLE PROJECT
Developed to deepen students understanding of a particular theme or historical event by creating an original play or musical, the Ensemble Project focuses on the value of collaboration and the unique contributions every student has to offer. Ensemble Projects have focused on such topics as addressing school-wide bullying, the experiences of children during the Holocaust, the Age of Exploration, and the American Revolution.

George Street Playhouse’s professional development demonstrates how theatre arts integration provides creative and sustainable instructional methods to improve student achievement. Teachers learn how to effectively integrate theatre arts strategies into K-12 classrooms to strengthen content knowledge, enhance literacy, and foster collaboration in English language arts, science, and social studies.
