George Street Playhouse is proud to commission and produce dynamic educational touring theatre for young audiences. Our touring productions address themes such as respect, bullying, conflict resolution, health and wellness, environmental education and empathy. Each show includes a postplay discussion, which provides an excellent starting point for classroom conversation and can be used to fulfill Common Core Curriculum Content Standards.

BULLYING When an immigrant family from a fictitious place called Homeland arrives in America, they discover a new culture and unexpected prejudice. This clever play’s device has the Homelanders speaking English and the Americans speaking a made-up gibberish language, allowing the audience to understand what it is like to be overwhelmed by a new language and new customs. By addressing themes of bullying, prejudice, conflict resolution and immigration, New Kid is an ideal presentation for multicultural celebrations, conflict-resolution programs, and other school events. Based on a concept by Jane Howard Baker, originally produced as New Canadian Kid by Green Thumb Theatre for Young People, British Columbia. All rights should be directed to Green Thumb Theatre.

HEALTH & WELLNESS Reigning master of X-box and junk food junkie, eleven year-old Austin suddenly faces the long-term consequences of an unhealthy lifestyle when he learns his mother has been diagnosed with Type II Diabetes. Created in partnership with Shaping NJ, this musical comedy explores the challenges of a family learning how to make healthy choices together. Commissioned by George Street Playhouse through the Victoria J. Mastrobuono New Work Development Program, Bristol Myers Squibb, and The Horizon Foundation for New Jersey.

EDUCATION Glaciers are melting. Sea levels are rising. Hurricanes, floods and droughts are sweeping the globe. Captain Carbon is threatening to destroy the earth. Is there no one who can stop him? Enter fourteen year old Gabi, who, after her family home is destroyed by Hurricane Sandy, transforms into Green Hero. Armed with clean energy and sustainable choices, can Green Hero stop Captain Carbon before it’s too late? Can the actions of one girl in one city really make a difference in the fight against global warming? Created by the writers of Austin the Unstoppable, this fun, upbeat musical comedy investigates the positive choices each of us can make to assure a sustainable future. George Street Playhouse’s Education Department believes theatre arts inspires artistic development, enhances literacy skills, and enables emotional growth for students of all ages. By providing opportunities for students to explore the world around them through the dramatic process, they develop creative expression, enhance communication, build self-esteem, and generate an appreciation of theatre as a vital force in their lives. Our Education programming annually serves over 40,000 children and hundreds of adults in New Jersey.

ARTIST-IN-RESIDENCE PROGRAMS
Recipient of a 2015 Citation of Excellence in Theatre Arts Education by NJ State Council for the Arts, George Street Playhouse’s Theatre at the Core and STEAM focused Artist-in-Residence programs strengthen content knowledge in English language arts, math, science and social studies. GSP’s theatre arts integration classroom residencies use creative and sustainable instructional methods to improve student achievement. Our Teaching Artists work with over 2,000 students in more than 100 classrooms annually. Teachers and administrators in districts throughout New Jersey find GSP’s residencies provide imaginative, differentiated learning instruction for pre-K-12 students that are tailored to meet the curricular goals of the classroom.
THEATRE AT THE CORE
This ten-session residency investigates how theatre practice can enhance core curriculum content. Whether exploring a unit on the American Revolution, Immigration, or Mythology, our teaching artists will partner with you to create dynamic learning opportunities for your students.
ENSEMBLE PROJECT
Developed to deepen students understanding of a particular theme or historical event by creating an original play, the Ensemble Project focuses on the value of collaboration and the unique contributions every student has to offer. Ensemble Projects have focused on such topics as creating an original musical to address school-wide bullying, the experiences of children during the Holocaust, the Age of Exploration, and the American Revolution.
