From the Resident Artistic Director I saw the original New York production of Daddy Long Legs one evening last spring and fell in love with the piece before the lights came up for intermission. I enjoyed the fact that the source material, – Jean Webster’s novel of the same name – was clearly inspired by the work of at least three writers whose novels about young people I’ve very much admired and read: Michael Mastro Charles Dickens (orphanages, anonymous benefactors), Resident Artistic Director Louisa May Alcott (the education and awakening of a young woman who eventually becomes a professional writer), and–not unsurprisingly as Webster was his great-niece–Mark Twain (first person social commentary/critique given by the main character). Ms. Webster owes no small debt to Charlotte Bronte nor to Jane Austin, either, but “if you are going to steal,” said the great German playwright Bertolt Brecht, “steal well!” The original novel of Daddy Long Legs is essentially epistolary in nature, comprised almost entirely of the heroine’s letters to the anonymous benefactor who puts her through college at a time when few young women had access to such an education. I truly admired the way in which the book of the musical, written by John Caird (one of the adaptor/directors of the original Broadway production of Les Miserables), as well as the show’s songs by Paul Gordon, honored Jerusha’s pluck and spirit and expanded upon the scope of the novel by vividly imagining the heart and mind and life of the man who is receiving those letters, reading them, and falling in love with her at the same time we are. Finally, while the story celebrates the education of a young woman, and urges us to be true to ourselves despite the pressure we feel to conform to society’s expectations, it is first and foremost a love story, sweet and swell. I’m always up for a great love story, and so I fell for it. I’m hoping you will, too. Happy Holidays,

Michael Mastro Resident Artistic Director

Jean Webster and The Secret of Happiness by John Caird

I first read Jean Webster’s novel some fifteen years ago and was immediately charmed by its wit, heart and intelligence. I was also surprised that a novel of such extraordinary sensitivity and economy of structure was not much better known, and was not regarded, indeed, as a great American classic. Written in 1911 in a farmhouse in Massachusetts, Daddy Long Legs is one of the most delightful love stories of all time. It is also an eloquent account of the growth of a woman’s spirit and independence at a time when women were just starting to claim the social and legal equalities for which, in many parts of the world, they are still struggling. Webster came from a highly literate and politically engaged family. Her mother was Mark Twain’s niece and her father was Twain’s business manager. Her great grandmother and grandmother were involved in both the temperance and suffragette movements and she herself attended Vassar College, the progressive women’s college on which Jerusha’s alma mater in the novel is clearly based.

It isn’t the big pleasures that count the most; it’s making a great deal out of the little ones. (Jean Webster)

In spite of her upbringing, Webster’s great leap of imagination was to see her own world of enlightened privilege through the eyes of a character who starts out in the world with no advantages whatsoever. Jerusha Abbott is a sort of female Candide. She enters the world of college embarrassed by her own ignorance and awkwardness, but her very lack of sophistication, together with a wicked sense of the absurd, allows her to see the world of her peers as it really is, untrammelled by any elements of self-interest. Her critique of the social and academic world around her is marvelously matched when she meets her mentor and benefactor, Jervis Pendleton, the extreme disparity between their two backgrounds allowing Webster to develop her story into one of personal growth and emotional evolution. As in the plot of Jane Eyre, Jerusha’s favorite novel, a girl who is born with nothing to her name but her intelligence and clarity of spiritual purpose becomes the moral compass for a rich and privileged man to map his way through the confusing and loveless world in which he has grown up and to find a sense of belonging in the heart of the woman he has grown to love. Jean Webster died in childbirth at the age of 39, only five years after writing her great masterpiece, but her message, in Jerusha’s words, is an enduring one – that ‘the true secret of happiness is to live in the now. Not to be forever regretting the past or anticipating the future, but to get the most that you can out of this very instant.’ ‘Life may not last long’ as our final song says, but when lived to the fullest, as lived by Jean Webster, it can make you immortal.
