The Arthur Laurents Theater The intimate Arthur Laurents Theater, featuring 252 seats and all the amenities for producing riveting new dramas and hilarious new comedies, is named for longtime friend of George Street Playhouse, awardwinning playwright and author Arthur Laurents.

“Arthur always said George Street Playhouse was his favorite theater,” our Artistic Director David Saint remarked. “It is fitting that this brilliant artist, who contributed profoundly to the theater and film canons, will be honored in this way. “ “Arthur was a true friend, and it means so much to this community that his name will be etched into this extraordinary performing arts center that George Street Playhouse calls home.”

Arthur Laurents is well-known as the acclaimed writer of the books for musicals such as Gypsy and West Side Story, and the screenplays The Way We Were and The Turning Point. He premiered nine of his plays at George Street Playhouse.

The Laurents/Hatcher Foundation, named for Arthur Laurents and his partner Tom Hatcher, gifted $2.75 million, which will support George Street’s ongoing commitment to the development and production of new plays and musicals, the cornerstones of George Street Playhouse’s national reputation.

From the Artistic Director When our old friend and colleague Tony winning playwright Joe DiPietro sent me his his latest work, Conscience, I was amazed that a period piece about the remarkable Republican Senator Margaret Chase Smith could be so uncannily relevant.

In a time when our country becomes seemingly more partisan daily, it is enlightening to focus on a woman who was unafraid to speak up about the importance of protecting the principles upon which this country was founded, despite resistance from her own party.

David Saint (Director/Artistic Director) is in his 23rd season as Artistic Director of George Street Playhouse. He has directed 40 mainstage productions at GSP, having most recently helmed this season’s Midwives in addition to The Trial of Donna Caine, American Hero; I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change and An Act of God starring the legendary Kathleen Turner in the 2017-18 season. Samantha Flint makes stage management look easy. Beginning a week before rehearsals start through the final performance, she is the mastermind behind the logistics that facilitate the show’s evolution from a script to a fully-realized performance. Actors’ Equity Association is commemorating 2020 as the ‘Year of the Stage Manager,’ and this edition of George Street’s Staff Spotlight highlights the important work stage managers like Samantha do on a daily basis to make it possible for the show to go on: Samantha Flint How long have you been stage managing?

Production Stage Manager I grew up as a performer, a dancer, and I first tried my hand at stage managing when I was 15.

I loved it so much, I went on to earn my BFA in Stage Management from The Theatre School at DePaul University. I haven’t looked back!

How did you first hear about George Street Playhouse?

I’ve always heard about George Street and the quality shows they produced, and I knew good people work there. I first worked with David Saint [Artistic Director] when he directed Final Follies at Primary Stages. He then brought me on board as the stage manager for The Immigrant here at George Street. Conscience marks my third show with George Street, and my third time working with David.

What’s your favorite part of being a stage manager?

In theatre, each performance is unique because that exact group of people (onstage, backstage, and in the audience) will never be in the same place again at the same time. The experience is ephemeral and therefore, I think, more meaningful. And I, as the stage manager, have the privilege of facilitating the emotional journey for everyone in the room.

What do you do in your free time?

I live in Jersey City with my husband, and I enjoy taking Pure Barre classes and working on my health and wellness business. I also love to host parties – I make an exceptional cheese plate!

Film Festival. The Foundation was gratified to have been selected as the Outstanding Foundation of 2016 by the New Jersey Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals. It is proud to report that the Foundation has provided approximately $90,000,000 in grants to philanthropic endeavors, addressing the Foundation’s interest in the arts, education, health care and social services.

Christopher J. Bailey (GSP Production Manager) This season marks Mr. Bailey’s 22nd at George Street Playhouse and 15th as its Production Manager, having previously served the Playhouse as Technical Coordinator and Sound and Lighting Manager. Recently for GSP, he was Lighting Designer for last season’s production of The Immigrant.

He was also Lighting Designer for GSP’s production of Clever Little Lies, which moved to the Guild Hall Theatre in East Hampton and then off-Broadway to the Westside Theatre. His other designs for GSP includes 6 scenic designs and 9 sound designs for GSP’s Educational Touring productions, 28 lighting designs and 40 sound designs for GSP’s mainstage productions. Also, has designed for: Pearl Theatre, Barrington Stage, Premiere Stages, Bickford Theatre, Abingdon Theatre, Strand Theatre, Berkshire Theatre Festival, Two River Theater, Ashlawn Highland Opera, LKB Dance, Randy James Dance, Rand Theater, The Irish Repertory Theatre, Westport Country Playhouse, Long Wharf, Delaware Theatre Company, Jacob’s Pillow, and more.

Kelly Ryman (Managing Director) is celebrating her 20th season with George Street Playhouse, having recently led the company through a transformative chapter in its history – overseeing the planning, construction and operations of the move to its interim home on Rutgers Cook Campus in 2017 as well as the move back downtown as a Founding Resident Company of New Brunswick Performing Arts Center. From 2000 to 2013, as the company’s Director of Marketing and Public Relations, she spearheaded promotional efforts that resulted in the top ten-highest grossing productions in the Playhouse’s history, including the hit musical It Shoulda Been You which moved to Broadway in 2015.

Off-Broadway, Kelly was a member of the marketing team for The Toxic Avenger, which premiered at George Street Playhouse and went on to win the 2009 Outer Critics’ Circle Award for Best New Musical. Active in the non-profit arts community throughout New Jersey, she was the Central NJ Chair of Jersey Arts Marketers for over a decade. She serves on the Board of Directors of New Brunswick City Center and is an adjunct professor of Arts and Entertainment Business at Mercer County College. Prior to her tenure at George Street Playhouse, Ms. Ryman worked at McCarter Theatre and The Wilma Theater. Kelly was recognized in 2012 by ArtPride NJ with their Leadership Award.

A Reflection on “Conscience” Excerpted from Declaration of Conscience by Margaret Chase Smith, 1972 Editor’s Preface by William C. Lewis, Jr.

There has long been, with some reason, considerable cynicism about speeches –their degree of sincerity, their motivation, their purpose, their value and their impact. Perhaps it is more accurate to say that this cynicism is about speakers rather than speeches– especially if the speakers are politicians.

Rarely is there a speech of lasting impact. In American history, Washington’s Farewell Address, Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address, Wilson’s “Save the World for Democracy,” and Franklin D. Roosevelt’s “The Only Thing We Have to Fear is Fear Itself” are remembered, in part perpetuated in the classrooms through required reading of the history books. But these are the exceptions.

And in an age marked by a desperate need for communication among peoples –to talk instead of fight, in Vietnam or in the ghettos or on the campuses—it is strange that there are so few significant speeches, or books which tell what led up to them and what resulted from them.

For in the great emphasis placed upon the need for communication, there is greater need to recognize the fundamental truth that the greatest means of communication is in speech. We talk and write much about the importance of articulation. Yet we rarely take a real close look at what causes that articulation and what results from it.

More often, people are more impressed with the style of a speaker than with the content of what he says—how rather than what he says. And even less, in why. Seldom at all do we interest ourselves in what resulted from what was said.

Most of us soon forget a speech we have heard or read. But the political speaker has to live with every word of that speech for the rest of his or her life. Any public official is fair game on “Meet the Press” or “Face the Nation”...for the panelist’s needle: “Well, Senator, how do you justify this statement you made ten years ago in light of today’s developments?”

Most everyone can recall hearing the wise counsel of such adages as “You never have to be sorry for, or explain, or apologize for the unspoken word” or “Don’t speak unless to do so improves upon silence.” But anyone who unbrokenly follows such caution also studiously avoids involvement.

Such a person is lacking in leadership.

Margaret Chase Smith, is currently the only woman member of the United States Senate and the only woman to have been elected to, and served in, both the United States House of Representatives and the United States Senate. To call her a Quiet Woman is accurate because she rarely speaks in the Senate. Yet to call her quiet can be seriously misleading, for she does not shun or avoid involvement.

She has been at the center of conflict and controversy. Quiet? Yes, but she is the one Senator who spoke out most forcefully year after year against the McCarthyism that gripped our nation in the early and mid-fifties. If historians attach any significance to the McCarthy era, then surely Margaret Chase Smith’s Declaration of Conscience of June 1, 1950 will be to that conflict what Lincoln’s Address at Gettysburg was to the Civil War.
