The moment I saw Joshua Harmon’s critically acclaimed blisteringly funny comedy Bad Jews I knew it was a great choice for George Street.

However, it requires a skilled director of comedy and a cast of expert young actors who understand both the passionate beliefs of their characters as well as Mr. Harmon’s particular brand of New York rhythmic dialogue.
Fortunately, we have Jessica Stone, a smart, funny, up-andcoming star director and her sensational cast to mine the riches of this text. In a world where the struggle between tribalism and multiculturalism, between fighting for your ancestral religion and culture and a more secular assimilation, this hilarious and moving story gives us much needed food for thought. Coming on the heels of American Son, I am proud that we are able to bring such thoughtful theatre to our audience in this new era of American social discourse. Enjoy the ride! Sincerely,

Other plays include Ivanka, which had readings at theatres across the country on Election Eve 2016, and Significant Other, which had its world premiere at Roundabout. Her offBroadway credits include Crimes of the Heart, Krisit, The Country Club, June Moon, Tenderloin,and Babes in Arms. In July 2016, he directed a two-night concert performance of West Side Story at the legendary Hollywood Bowl. He also has directed on Broadway, off-Broadway and regionally at Playwrights Horizons, Manhattan Theatre Club, Primary Stages, McCarter, Williamstown, Seattle Rep, Pasadena Playhouse, Pittsburgh Public, Long Wharf and many others on premieres by writers such as Aaron Sorkin, Wendy Wasserstein, Peter Parnell, Jonathan Marc Sherman, Joe Di Pietro and Jonathan Larson. He is the recipient of the Alan Schneider Award, Helen Hayes Award, L.A. Drama Critics Award, several Drama-Logue Awards and is the President of The Laurents/ Hatcher Foundation. As an actor, he works regularly on and off Broadway, regionally, and in film and TV, where he is currently recurring on Law & Order: SVU. Member: Actors Equity, SAG-AFTRA, SDC, Naked Angels, The Actors Center. Kelly Ryman (Managing Director) is now in her 17th season at George Street Playhouse. As Director of Marketing and Public Relations from 2000 to 2013, Kelly spearheaded promotional efforts resulting in the top 10-highest grossing productions in the Playhouse’s history, including the hit musical It Shoulda Been You, which ran on Broadway in early 2015. Off-Broadway, Kelly was a member of the marketing team for The Toxic Avenger, which premiered at GSP and won the 2009 Outer Critics’ Circle Award for Best New Musical. She serves on the Board of Directors of New Brunswick City Market as well the Advisory Board of Elijah’s Promise. Prior to her tenure at George Street Playhouse, Ms. Ryman worked at McCarter Theatre, and The Wilma Theatre. She is an adjunct professor of Arts and Entertainment Business at Mercer County Community College, and was recognized in 2012 by ArtPride NJ with their Jersey Arts Marketers Leadership Award. Kelly is proud to be a recipient of a Boy Scouts of America 2015 Tribute to Women Award.

with Playwright Joshua Harmon
Q: What inspired you to write Bad Jews? JH: I didn’t realize it at the time, but the seed for this play was planted at a depressingly unmoving Yom Hashoah service I attended my sophomore year of college. The theme of the service was “Grandchildren of Survivors,” so instead of a survivor speaking, a group of fellow students whose grandparents had survived the Holocaust spoke. It was strange and sterile and laden with clichés but lacking in genuine feeling and it scared me. A year or so later I came up with the title Bad Jews and started taking notes about the characters during my senior year, but then I put that notebook away for many years (fortunately it wasn’t stolen). I think I felt like this play would either be the worst thing I would ever write, in which case, what was the rush; or, it
might be the best thing I had ever written, and I somehow understood at 21 that I wasn’t good enough to write something really good. So I sat on it for many years, like a chicken a little bit, you know, hatching my eggs. In December of 2010, I went to the MacDowell Colony, in New Hampshire. I felt embarrassingly unworthy, like I had somehow conned these very nice people into thinking I was a legitimate writer, so to prove myself worthy of the honor, I felt like I needed to write a Really Important Play, which, word to the wise, when you set out to write a Really Important Play you wind up writing the opposite, i.e. the WORST PLAY EVER. I brought this piece I had been working on about gay bullies and whales, and I spent three and a half weeks trying to write it, but it just wasn’t happening, it was terrible, and I felt horrible about myself, churning out junk

in the same studio where Alice Walker had worked. So I had a little ceremony to say goodbye to the gay whale play: I spent a night watching Schindler’s List which is my go-to movie when I’m depressed, and I sobbed, and the next day I said to myself, you know, I have to leave here with something, so I looked at my list—I make “Plays I Want to Write Before I Die” lists every so often— and Bad Jews kept making the list going on six years and I guess I got tired of seeing it stare back at me, unwritten, so I figured why not, and I left MacDowell with the first thirty pages and finished the first draft later that spring. [Several workshops and readings later, here we are.] Q: What would you say the play is about? JH: Purely in terms of plot, the play is about a young woman named Daphna Feygenbaum who comes to New York for her grandfather’s funeral and has something of a battle royale with her cousin over an object that belonged to their grandfather which they both want very badly, albeit for very different reasons. And though there is nothing in that humorless description to indicate the play is a comedy, it’s supposed to be funny. If any larger ideas or themes are at work, I really don’t feel it’s my place to lead that discourse. My job as the writer is to tell a story and then get out of its way. What resonates with the audience is for them to discover
for themselves, not for me to dictate. The play, like all my writing, comes from a very personal place. Q: What kind of research did you have to do in order to write this play? JH: Eudora Welty has a great quote about this: “I am a writer who came from a sheltered life. A sheltered life can be a daring life as well. For all serious daring starts from within.” Which is to say, I didn’t do any research. I just lived my life and thought about the world around me and the world I know and then I wrote about it. And by no means am I putting myself in the same category as the people I’m about to mention, but I consider them some of my heroes, and I don’t think Tennessee Williams had to do much research to write A Streetcar Named Desire except maybe familiarize himself a little bit with the Napoleonic code, and Wendy Wasserstein might have had to reference a few art history books to write The Heidi Chronicles but no research was required to understand the challenges and fears that Heidi faces, and Alfred Uhry didn’t have to research too much to write Driving Miss Daisy, he just had to live in the South when he did and then be brave enough to write about what that was like. And yes, I say brave, because Welty’s right: daring starts from within. Always. Our interior lives are so much more terrifying than anything outside ourselves. But I think that’s where the best material lives.

Every component has been upgraded, from the headsets to the personal receivers to the Broadway–class microphones on the stage. There are now options for different types of headsets — for patrons who use hearing aids equipped with a T-coil, we now have a “loop” transmitter. You can choose the option that works best for you. We have also increased the number of available headsets, including additional units for audio-described performances.
With the new Assisted Listening System the reception is clearer, the sound is louder, and the devices are more comfortable.

INCLEMENT WEATHER George Street Playhouse maintains a policy of not cancelling performances due to inclement weather, except in the event a State of Emergency has been declared by the State or Local Government. LATE SEATING POLICY The theatre is open to the public one halfhour prior to the performance. In consideration of all patrons, latecomers will be seated at the discretion of House Management. Late patrons will be seated in the best available seating at an appropriate break or interval during the performance. RECORDING EQUIPMENT Due to copyright and union regulations and restrictions, still cameras, video cameras or any type of recording equipment is not permitted at any time in the theatre and will be confiscated. SMOKING The Playhouse is a smoke-free environment. There is no smoking in the building. If you wish to smoke, you may do so outside where there are ashtrays available.
