Page 1

Welcome

Our Approach: Our Mission:

Our mission is to create a more equitable college experience for firstgeneration and low-income (FGLI) students, an effort that advances Georgetown University’s core mission as a whole.

The Georgetown Scholars Program (GSP) works with talented FGLI undergraduate students as they navigate the higher education system at an elite university. We achieve our mission via our community building, advising and mentorship, and advocacy efforts alongside the financial resources that we offer.

A Letter from Alexis

Hello!

I want to personally welcome you into the GSP community! Our GSP Peer Mentor Program pairs incoming GSP students (that's you!) with upperclass students in GSP who are committed to helping you transition and succeed at Georgetown. I am planning several fun opportunities for you to engage with GSP and your peer mentor throughout the school year! I hope that you are all excited to engage with GSP and your peer mentors as you start your journey here on the Hilltop! If you have any questions about the Peer Mentor Program, don't hesitate to reach me at gspeermentors@georgetown.edu.

As your student advisor, I am here to connect with you and ensure that you are connected to resources on campus throughout the year. I am also available to answer questions about ANYTHING related to the transition to college! As always, gsphoyas@georgetown.edu is a great starting point for any concerns. If you ever want to ask a quick question or make an appointment with a student advisor, you can email me at ag2012@georgetown.edu or one of our GSP graduate student advisors. Enjoy the rest of your summer! I cannot wait to meet you later this August.

Mentee Guide

All first years are paired with an upperclass GSP mentor who provides advice and support, based on their own experiences of learning how to navigate the transition to life as a college student. They can show you around campus, attend GSP events with you, or grab a bite to eat! They can also answer any questions about Georgetown, registration, college life, GSP resources, etc.

Finding a Mentor Mentor Selection

To help you pick the perfect mentor, we have created a series of Mentor Profiles. Profiles are organized by school and then ordered alphabetically by first name. You can choose any mentor for any reason!

Once you've selected your top mentor choices, fill our selection form!

Getting Acquainted Mentor Bonding

Reply to your mentor when they reach out! Even if you missed their message, reach back out when you can. They are here for you! Be open to learning about and from them and letting them get to know you. At GSP we value all students showing up authentically as themselves.

GSP gives mentors funds to do something fun or explore the area with you. Make sure you utilize this resource with your mentor! Also use your Corp voucher for a quick and casual on-campus coffee date (available on a first-come first-serve basis)!

If you have questions, we’re here to help!

Email Alexis at gspeermentors@georgetown.edu for questions or concerns about the peer mentor program.

Email gsphoyas@georgetown.edu for any questions or concerns about the Georgetown Scholars Program or any general questions you have!

I'd say I'm an outgoing enby who tries their hardest to balance being down to earth with dreams and aspirations. You'll find me yapping about Grey's Anatomy (derogatorily), my checklist for the day, or health! For the health aspect, it can range from BIPOC LGBTQ+ rights, mental health awareness (particularly among marginalized groups), and a healthy relationship with one's body. I'd say one thing I constantly (try to) practice and advocate for, is balance.

I'm a very proud, very passionate person who loves spending time with friends doing anything but homework. By no means do I have anything figured out, but I will throw myself at any problem until I know how to fix it. Sometimes I make plans to go to parties with friends and end up sitting on their couch with a drink, typing up a text to their situationship, and I wouldn't have it any other way. My planning skills are admittedly a little messy, but I'm a great improvisor!

Chicago, IL | SFS 2025 | Major: Science, Technology, and International Affairs (STIA)

Activities: Uncommon Grounds (UG) - The Corp | Latin American Student Association (LASA)

I'm a very lighthearted person who is always down for an adventure. I love spontaneous plans, going out, and trying new things. At the same time, I'm very passionate about healthcare disparities and plan to attend medical school after graduation.

Maria Victora Almeida Vazquez, she/her

Cincinnati, OH | SFS 2025 | Major: International Politics (IPOL) | Minor: Chinese (CHIN)

Activities: I am not as involved with campus groups as I used to be because I am working and interning most of the time. I am interested in the Hill and work with Campus Ministry so I am very involved with Catholic Ministry, Retreats, and RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults) programs.

I am a rising senior studying international politics and Chinese. I love spending time outside, trying new foods, spending time with my friends, and being spontaneous.

Activities: Hoya Saxa Weekend (HSW) | Black Student Alliance (BSA)

Hi, I'm Myla! Outside my academic interests, I really enjoy poetry, photography, naps, and exploring D C as of recent When I don't have the energy to do those things, besides napping, I also enjoy binge-watching Netflix shows, so if you ever need some show recommendations for a study break, feel free to ask me!

Noriko O’Shea, she/her

Honolulu, HI | SFS 2025 | Major: Culture and Politics (CULP) | Minor: Japanese (JAPN)

Activities: Women's Club Water Polo | Hawai’i Club | Student Centers (workstudy)

I'm very big on napping and a big big hater of big lights. I have really bad rbf but I promise I'm not actually that mean!

Paul Aversa, he/him

Miami, FL | SFS 2025 | Major: Science, Technology, and International Affairs (STIA) | Concentration: Global Health

Activities: GU REUSE | CSJ - Advisory Board for Student Organizations (ABSO) | Por Colombia | GU Alumni and Student Federal Credit Union (GUASFCU)

I'm known as the Florida man. I'm majoring in STIA and am SUPER passionate about the environment, sustainability, and healthcare. I love everything related to water and the ocean, which includes swimming, kayaking, diving, going on cruises...you name it. I'm also a HUGE D.C. fan (and plan to move here post-grad) because of everything the city offers: my favorite weekend day is going to the Post Office Tower, getting an açaí bowl at Eastern Market and listening to the jazz, browsing books at Capital Books, and topping it off with a dinner in Adams Morgan or Columbia Heights.

Activities: Center for Multicultural Equity and Access (CMEA) | Ballet Folklórico Mexicano de Georgetown (BFMG) | GU Women in Leadership (GUWIL) | Soccer

I love going for runs in the summer sun, baking during late nights with friends, and finding new books to read. I am a huge advocate for finding little things in your life each day that make you happy. If I am not hanging around campus, you can find me listening to Kali Uchis or Beyonce on long walks throughout Georgetown!

Sharona Nagamuthu, she/her

Queens, NY | SFS 2026 | Major: International Politics (IPOL) | Minor: Latin American Studies (LASP)

Activities: GU Jumpstart | Caribbean Culture Circle (CCC) | SFS Academic Council | Hilltop Microfinance Initiative

I’m a chronic procrastinator at my core, but I also love going to museums, “studying” in cute coffee shops, and trying new food. A prime example of the duality of women.
