PREPARING

Make sure to check carry on bag specifications for your airline! Watch out for liquids! Make sure to put those larger than 3.4 oz. in your checked bag. (For other rules, check the Transportation Security Administration's website).

If you need a checked bag, buy online ahead of time to avoid long lines! Make sure to keep the bag under the weight limit (most will be 50 lbs.) to avoid paying fees and having to rearrange your luggage. Southwest Airlines offers two free checked bags! Keep your necessity items (wallets, chargers, prescriptions, etc) on you (in your personal item or carry on), in case there are baggage delays or your suitcase gets lost.

Make sure to "check in" online 24 hours before your flight. Print or have your ticket ready on your phone and keep it in a safe place.

Tickets are cheaper when you shop on a Tuesday & Wednesday. Try your best to minimize connecting flights, but if that is the most affordable option, make sure you have plenty of time to switch gates (1 hour minimum)! Avoid additional fees: Double check your airline's carry-on policy, including size & weight regulations To avoid missing your flight, arrive at the airport 2+ hours early!

When buying a ticket make sure to clear your browser cookies and shop using the incognito browser setting to avoid booking sites tracking your data and increasing prices! Google Flights is an online flight booking search service that lets you compare prices across airlines and shows you when you’re getting the best deal. You can set up alerts for cheap flights and look at price history. There are lots of similar sites to compare prices!

DAY OF TRAVEL

Packing snacks can save you from paying for overpriced food at airport stands! Have your government issued ID in a secure but handy location so you can easily access it when it has to be checked. FOR TRAVEL

MONEY SAVING TIPS

BOARDING PASSES

3T R A V E L I N G P R O T I P S ARRIVAL & HOTELS We recommend flying into Reagan National (DCA) or Dulles (IAD). Ride shares like Uber/Lyft or taxi's are usually available at all times. NOTE: Book your flight to arrive close to your assigned move-in time! Take into consideration travel to campus from the airport! If you're driving, for directions, type this address into your GPS for directions: 3700 O St NW, Washington, DC 20057 Need a hotel? We find that the most affordable hotels are across the bridge in Rosslyn, VA. Pro Tip: Ship some boxes with anything that you don't need immediately to avoid juggling and paying for a lot of checked bags, BUT don't ship anything until 2 weeks prior to move-in! For more info on where to ship packages, visit the Mailing Services Webpage. Be sure to check your syllabus and the exam schedule BEFORE BOOKING TRAVEL to return home at the end of each semester! Book EARLY and round trip to save $$$! Don't forget GSP's Travel Home Grant is available to all first years to book travel home during Thanksgiving, Spring, and Easter Break! BOOKING TRAVEL

First-year move-in will take place over the course of 2 days.

ASSIGNED MOVE-IN TIMES If you signed up for Project Move In, make sure to communicate with your volunteer about any changes to your arrival! PRO TIP Use Georgetown's Online Campus Map, which has a Wayfinding tool to find a walkable path between two locations. Walk to your assigned classrooms before your first day of class and time yourself if you have less than 15 minutes between classes. If you’re leaving campus, check for exits near your current location before using an online navigation tool because some map applications automatically direct you to exit through the front gates (ex. If you are in Darnall and are heading North towards Trader Joe’s or Safeway, exit campus next to St. Mary’s to save time!) Campus can feel overwhelming your first few days and weeks. Here’s what we recommend to make your transition easier:

NAVIGATING CAMPUS

Make sure to be in compliance with all testing protocols and move-in procedures!

Details about the check-in process will have been shared to your email. You can also review Residential Living's Webpage.

WHAT TO EXPECT FOR MOVE-IN

A R R I V I N G A T C A M P U S 4

Incoming first year and new transfer students will move in on Thursday, August 18th & Friday, August 19th. Students should arrive to campus as close to their assigned move-in window (30 minutes) as possible to avoid delays. Check Hoya Housing for your approved move-in date and time. Call the Office of Residential Living at 202 687 4560 for questions. If you are doing a pre orientation program, your move in date is likely earlier. Check in with your program for more details!
