Many years ago, while standing on the south rim of the Grand Canyon looking at the snow on the north rim, I had a conversation with a pastor who had served a church in Montana. We were at the Grand Canyon the week after Easter. Some of you may not know that I lived in Hawaii from 1988 – 1992. I was the director of hospital ministry at the Queens’ Medical Center in Honolulu. A few years ago, my wife and I took our first trip back in 22 years. When I was asked what the best part of the trip was, the answer came to me quickly. It was visiting with three old friends whom we had not seen in 22 years. Of course, seeing and remembering the beauty of “paradise” was also great fun. One of the tourist stops we made was at the USS Arizona Memorial in Pearl Harbor. Even though neither of us have family members who died during the Pearl Harbor attack, it was an emotional experience. As we were preparing to leave the memorial, Sally asked the park ranger how many sets of brothers served on the Arizona. Thirty-seven sets of brothers served aboard the battleship. There were three sets of three brothers and one father and son set. Not all of the brothers were killed in action on December 7, 1941. But there is only one set of brothers which experienced no deaths. One of those brothers was ashore attending a school and the other was blown overboard and burned badly, but survived.
number of news stories and Facebook posts I have seen this week concerning the 75th anniversary of D-Day. I realize how fortunate I am that I did not have to serve in combat. Thinking about our trip to Hawaii and visiting the USS Arizona helped me to remember the final piece of that visit. While on the motor launch leaving the USS Arizona, the man sitting next to me asked if I served in the military. I said, “No.” I remembered back to the time I took my induction physical and passed it with flying colors. I was one step away from being drafted during the Viet Nam War. During seminary I strongly considered enlisting as a chaplain. I talked with my cousin who was, at that time, between his second and third combat tours in Viet Nam. He told me about the important role chaplains play for soldiers, especially those in combat.
I think about the language of “enemies” and about how that language is in the Bible and in our theology. In Revelation, the last enemy God will overcome is death. I bet this means that when God’s kingdom is realized on earth that there will be no more war. Sam enjoys reading, soccer, legos, and video games. He recently took a soldering class and made his own flashlight and a remote to turn any television on or off. Sam recently received a school award for most accelerated reader points. Sam’s birthday is March 9 and his favorite food is tacos.
Ann Thomas enjoys baking—especially her own recipes. She likes reading, drawing, and using her imagination. She has been part of a sewing club for a couple years and has enjoyed soccer. Ann Thomas’ birthday is December 14 and her favorite food is ice cream.
James likes soccer, basketball, and gymnastics. He really likes the song “Surfin USA” by the Beach Boys, and loves building with legos or other blocks. James’ birthday is September 24 and his favorite food(s) are cheeseburgers and strawberries.
The Lamar children were all born in Decatur, Georgia. They have each enjoyed participating in school plays and swimming in the summer. All the Lamars pull for the Auburn Tigers—WAR EAGLE!!! In the move to Mobile, they are most looking forward to making new friends and meeting new people.
Worship: Ministry of Music The summer is a busy season in the Ministry of Music. While the choir and handbell ringers are able to enjoy a small break, the planning for the next choral season must go on. And we have much to look forward to in the coming months. On July 21, we will welcome Rev. Rebekah Abel Lamar and her family to GSPC in a special choral worship service followed by a reception allowing all to have the opportunity to meet her and the Lamar family. On August 16, we have the great honor of hosting my friend, colleague, and mentor, Dan Miller, Concert Organist, in an Organ Concert and Hymn Festival. Make plans now to attend this special event as it ushers us into the new choral season. You’ll find more information about Dan on the next page. It pleases me to introduce Ms. Samantha “Sami” Anselmo. Sami will serve as Soprano Section Leader in the Sanctuary Choir, and will serve as the Director of Children’s and Cherubs’ Choirs. Sami holds a Bachelor of Music in Choral Music Education with a Class B Educators License and Endorsements in Children’s (p12) Music Education. Throughout the season, Sami will hold rehearsals on Sunday mornings at 9:30 a.m., and throughout the year, plan for the [children’s choirs] participation in the Sunday worship service as well as Lessons and Carols and Holy Week. I ask of all our parents: please make a committed effort to having your children at rehearsals and planned performances. It is imperative that we make use of this great opportunity to grow our children’s programs—and music is one solid source to do so. Rehearsals resume on Sunday, September 8. DAN MILLER Concert Organist Dan Miller is an internationally renowned musician. He has taught music, conducted choirs and orchestras, and managed large concert productions and music conferences. He is respected as an innovative leader in handbells. Mr. Miller is well-known for his composing and arranging and has several published works. He has been seen and heard live in concert and through recordings on radio, television, and the internet. He has been the featured solo organist with several symphony orchestras. Dan Miller has recorded 22 organ compact discs. Mr. Miller is in his 20th year at Rodgers Instruments, one of the world’s leading organ builders, in Hillsboro, Oregon, as Rodgers Artist and Tonal Professional. He also is an Adjunct Professor of Organ at George Fox University in Newberg, Oregon. A church organist since age fifteen, Dan Miller has served at several notable churches. At Calvary Church in Charlotte, North Carolina, he presided over the world’s thirteenth largest pipe organ; at Coral Ridge Presbyterian Church, Fort Lauderdale, Florida, he served as assistant organist to Diane Bish. Currently Dan is the Organist for St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Beaverton, Oregon. He also serves many churches nationwide as Guest Organist for their worship services. Mr. Miller holds a Church Music Diploma from Moody Bible Institute. He majored in organ performance at the American Conservatory of Music, holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Florida Atlantic University, and a Master of Music degree in Organ Performance from Winthrop University. HONORED AS “WATERKEEPER WARRIOR” Casi is one of 20 people named with this honor by the Waterkeeper Alliance and the travel site Culture Trip. Alec Baldwin narrated Casi’s story for a potential worldwide audience. The award, which is described as “a global clean water awareness project” spotlights 20 activists who “represent the impact one person can make on an issue that affects us all.” Of the 20 honorees, nine are based in the United States with the rest being scattered across the globe from Chile and China, to London and Nepal. Keep up the fantastic work, Casi! Your GSPC family is proud of you!
Congratulations to Jackson Boone for being awarded honors in Chorus, the Michael Yeager Athlete of the Year, Joyce Macphee Community Service, and the Macy McKay Spirit of St. Luke’s awards. Jackson is the son of Damon and Elizabeth Boone, and grandson of Ed and Nancy Boone, and Ted and Mary Ella Northrop.
Christian Education Our youth are our future, and we as a church family are tasked with the awesome responsibility of ensuring their Christian education. To that end, GSPC has been blessed with teachers, youth leaders, nursery workers and volunteers who continue to perform these very challenging and critical roles. I want to take this opportunity to thank Abbie Bowron, Hunter Oswalt, Jane Hale, Mary Herndon Nordmann, Sage Arnold, Jada and Francis, and all the Wee worship and nursery volunteers. You all are pillars of GSPC and we are grateful for your service to our young people.

As excited as we will be to have our new pastor in place at GSPC, it will be hard to say good-bye to interim pastor Rev. Dr. Cary Speaker, who has been such a bright spot in our lives for the past five months. Cary is always upbeat, never gets ruffled, knows how things are supposed to work, and preaches succinct, incisive and thoughtful sermons. We will miss his smiling face and his can-do attitude.
Tommy is preparing special music for Cary’s final service at GSPC, after which we will honor [him] with a reception in the Fellowship Hall on Sunday, July 14. Urban Ministries “We are called to serve”. “Lord, when did we see You hungry and feed You, or thirsty and give You something to drink? When did we see You a stranger and take You in, or naked and clothe You? When did we see You sick or in prison and visit You?” “We are called...to serve”. GSPC has long had a robust, diverse, and resilient set of mission programs that serve the Mobile community. This church has been a leader in serving the poor, the homeless, the sick, and the needy. Church members and volunteers from outside GSPC create positive impact through active involvement. The mission programs under the umbrella of GSPC’s Urban Ministries currently includes:
Mobile County Training School (MCTS) Mentoring – (new coordinator is needed)

UKIRK – a Presbytery-level mission housed with Urban Ministries for GSPC budgetary reasons, Jim Van Haneghan coordinating and Lisa Goodloe is on the UKIRK Board.
The Mobile County Training School, located in Africatown, serves a poor and neglected community. The challenges to education at this school are incredible. Our volunteers provide a program of lessons, field trips, special events, and mentoring. The commitment to be a mentor is significant, but each person that has been involved expresses sincere reward for their efforts. From providing enrichment through music appreciation, art, math and literature, mentors prepare lesson plans and coordinate events which are meant to enrich and engage youth who daily face problems that work against them. Our mentors follow students through several grades, building relationships that are hard to match. The mentoring schedule runs from September through April and the school recently expressed its desire for GSPC to continue what is a true mission of helping their students. This is another GSPC program with opportunities for service. There is a need for at least seven (7) new mentors. The current list of mentors includes Ed Hawkins – GSPC, Sally Pearsall -GSPC , Sandy Thomason – GSPC, Ray Thompson - St Paul’s, Jeff Grill - Christ Cathedral . We are short 3 men and 4 women. If you have an area of special interest – music, science, image art, technology – and you would like to share your skills with children of need, please take prayerful consideration of this service opportunity. Come and talk with us about whether you might be a good fit for this vital mission program. Interfaith Hospitality Network— SAVE THE DATES - GSPC’s next host weeks are September 1-8 and November 17-24. IHN is a mission that GSPC helped start! In the early 2000s, Mobile's Homeless Coalition spearheaded the formation of an emergency housing resource for families. The idea of a community-based approach was presented to Government Street Presbyterian Church who subsequently gave a two year grant to fuel the
project. The Interfaith Hospitality Network (later renamed Family Promise of Coastal Alabama) became a reality in South Alabama in the summer of 2003. IHN serves FAMILIES experiencing homelessness and that are unable to find places in shelters due to age or gender restrictions. For more information, you are encouraged to visit https://www.familypromisemobile.org/ GSPC is now one (1) of 11 host churches with an additional 10 support churches, the City of Mobile, and Trubridge in the network of support. This faith-based organization brings volunteers and churches together to prepare and serve meals, provide a safe place to rest by sharing physical space, and offer fellowship. This mission requires a lot of effort drawn from across this network of organizations. Like many similar social programs run by not-for-profit organizations and governmental organizations, participation fluctuates over time – even though there may seem to be no lack of need. THANK YOU to all of our GSPC volunteers who give of their support to this program! Meals on Wheels (MoW) is running smoothly, providing mid-day meals for elderly and indigent residents of the downtown area, Monday through Friday. MoW serves a regular list of 45 people per day with 10-12 on a rolling waiting list. Lisa deShazo has a great group of volunteer drivers drawn from GSPC and other organizations. Mobile ARC and its host church have recently joined our MoW crew to deliver meals. MoW stopped providing an extra “snack” with its lunch in order to meet budget considerations. That snack was being provided to give an evening meal option for those we serve. We are looking for ways to resume that option and would welcome your input! GSPC doesn’t charge for these meals as that would create several issues. We do accept donations or contributions. GSPC is one of several faith-based organizations that provide this meal service. It also coordinates with, but is separate from, the Mobile Area Council on Aging’s Senior Meal Program. GSPC’s Urban Mission Camp got a late start for this year, but is actively operating. The first group arrived on Saturday, June 8th! Anna Grace Claunch will be our Camp Director for the summer. Five of the eight weeks available have been reserved with 49 total campers and 15 adults. The budget for the Urban Mission Camp Fees in the 2019 Baytreat budget was $20,000. The current reserved group fees stand at $20,140. Given the tremendous lack of consistent management of this program over the past two years, that reservation schedule should be considered a success. The weekly activity schedules are set. All agencies for camp volunteer activities have been arranged by the efforts of Marilyn Moses. Campers will be working with L’Arch, Dumas Wesley, Catholic Social Services, Light of the Village, The Neighbor Center, and Mobile Baykeepers. The camp program includes daily scriptural reflections which relate to the activities of the day and serving the needy. As Urban Mission Camp moves through June and July, GSPC members have volunteered to help with meals and the schedule for Sunday suppers include: June 9th -Bo Perry Men’s Group; June 22nd -Session; July 7th Hale Carter Sunday School Class (members may bring their children); July 14th -Rudy Nordmann’ s Group; July 21st -the Pastor’s Class. This mission camp provides a peak service and spiritual experience for youth. It takes a lot of advance effort to keep the program relevant and financially viable. As our church’s pastoral structure has changed, so must our management of this mission program. We will be creating a working committee that will coordinate the yearround tasks involved with making this a premier camp. You may expect that this program will receive consistent, quality attention over the next year to bring this important mission experience to a level of interest appropriate to its potential.
Richard Mighell Day Camp is a four-day Vacation Bible School program for children who are part of the Boys and Girls Club in Mobile. This summer the camp will run the week of July 8 th . Campers arrive at Baytreat in the morning and depart in the afternoon. As we’ve done in the past, it will be operating simultaneously with one of our weekly Urban Mission Camps. Anna Grace is coordinating with the Boys & Girls Club Director and with GSPC volunteers to provide these kids an awesome experience! Presbyterian Children’s Home Camp is a great opportunity for boys and girls from the Presbyterian Children’s Home in Talladega, Alabama to stay at Baytreat for a week, enjoy the water, and have a summer camp experience. This summer camp is scheduled for July 27th through August 2nd . UKirk ("University Church") provides professional support, empowerment, and community for those engaged in campus ministry on behalf of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). This is a Presbytery-level program with a mission of collegiate and higher education ministry, leveraging church resources, building relationships between PCUSA and campus, congregational, and chaplain ministries. At this time, GSPC provides some financial support. We are discussing potential for greater interaction with the collegiate ministry activities. GSPC’s ability to lead and put faith in action is at the heart of our work in following God’s will. Standing still is not an option. Researching the level of volunteering among our membership, there are many people who regularly do multiple hands-on activities and many people who support in whatever means they are able. Yes, several of our programs need more “hands on deck.” And yes, we have fewer people in the church than in prior years. The difference between can and should is a decision that each of us as individuals must bridge. We are not standing still. To continue improving our ability to serve, we are taking time over the next few months to explore new ways to manage and coordinate volunteer opportunities. We are exploring means and methods to re-vitalize our engagement with Mobile’s diverse religious community. We are also exploring new programs that have the potential to build positive social and economic impact for our community’s most needy. A PERSONAL NOTE:
Since accepting to chair the Urban Ministries Committee, one of my goals has been to engage, rejuvenate, and energize our church in service to our urban community. My professional life includes advising and coordinating governance organizations, to plan and accomplish transformational projects, and sustain and improve our region’s environmental and economic resilience. Thanks in no small part to a deepening involvement with GSPC, I am now asking: how can we work so hard for regional improvement, pushing for the stewardship of our resources through the wise management of billions of dollars; and yet not recognize that our quality of life can never be fully realized if we disregard those who live at-risk, in need, and with limited opportunity? Unto the least of these. We Are Called To Serve.

ď Ą Baytreat In June, GSPC’s Baytreat property received the benefit of volunteer clean-up initiative along with the completion of the wharf, which was blessed on Sunday, June 9. Many thanks to all who participated in the clean-up and those who helped in seeing the wharf built to completion. Current dates available for summer rental are June 25 through July 5. The first in the Summer Social Sunday series is the book Thank You, Grandpa and will be based on the lectionary scripture for the day, II Kings, the final story of Elijah and Elisha.
Session Highlights from the Session meeting May 21, 2019 •
Staff Committee – the analysis of the failure to be able to hire a staff person for children and youth ministry revealed that the offering salary is under the market. The committee will make a recommendation next month.

Nominations – the session is willing to relax the unwritten policy prohibiting nominating members of the same family to serve on the same board at the same time.

Baytreat – on Sunday June 9 at 2:00 the congregation is invited to celebrate the blessing of the wharf.

Worship – for the summer the balconies will be closed and the back pews in the sanctuary will be roped off. August 16 at 7:00 PM there will be an organ recital presented by Dan Miller.
