Vivaldi, Grant; arr. Linda McKechnie

Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path. When I feel afraid, think I’ve lost my way, still you’re there right beside me. Nothing will I fear as long as you are near, please be with me to the end.

 CALL TO WORSHIP responsive

RUTH COLLINS

Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth. Worship the Lord with gladness and come into God’s presence with singing. Know that the Lord is God. God made us, and we are the Lord’s. The Lord is good. God’s steadfast love endures forever, faithful to all generations.

This well-known melody was created to provide a choral setting for J. C. F. von Schiller’s poem, “An die Freude” (To Joy), as the final movement of the composer’s Ninth Symphony. The author, a prominent Presbyterian pastor and author, wrote the words with this tune in mind.

 HYMN 611 Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee PRAYER OF CONFESSION unison

HYMN TO JOY

REV. DR. CARY SPEAKER

Merciful and loving God, you have called us to be your people, and claimed us for the service of Jesus Christ. We confess that we have not lived up to our calling, to proclaim the good news in word and deed. We are quick to speak when we ought to listen, and remain silent when it is time to speak. We put too much faith in our own actions, and fail to trust the strength of your Spirit. O God, forgive our foolish and sinful ways. Strengthen us anew to follow Christ’s way in the world. By your Holy Spirit, give us the grace we need to be faithful disciples, and fulfill our common calling through Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior, Amen. Confessions define what we as a community believe, affirming our beliefs about God, Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit, and about humanity, the church and the world. The Apostles’ Creed affirms the historical nature of Jesus of Nazareth as the Christ and confirms the Trinitarian nature of God as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

I believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.
