PRAYER OF THE DAY silent The Day of Pentecost,

celebrated as the birthday of the church, is recognized as the fulfillment of the gift of the Holy Spirit whose person in the Trinity is a self -effacing, master of discretion and concerned only to promote the lordship of Jesus Christ so to glorify the Father.

Holy God, who comes to us in breath, visits us from the throne of heaven, and sets us aflame with amazement and joy; you open our paths to new visions and guide our feet deeper into your wisdom.

Give us faith to trust your presence, through Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

We trust in God the Holy Spirit, everywhere the giver and renewer of life.

The Spirit justifies us by grace through faith, sets us free to accept ourselves and to love God and neighbor, and binds us together with all believers in the one body of Christ, the Church.

The same Spirit who inspired the prophets and apostles rules our faith and life in Christ through Scripture, engages us through the Word proclaimed, claims us in the waters of baptism, feeds us with the bread of life and the cup of salvation, and calls women and men to all ministries of the Church.

In a broken and fearful world the Spirit gives us courage to pray without ceasing, to witness among all peoples to Christ as Lord and Savior, to unmask idolatries in Church and culture, to hear the voices of peoples long silenced, and to work with others for justice, freedom, and peace.

In gratitude to God, empowered by the Spirit, we strive to serve Christ in our daily tasks and to live holy and joyful lives, even as we watch for God’s new heaven and new earth, praying, “Come, Lord Jesus!”

With believers in every time and place, we rejoice that nothing in life or in death can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

A BRIEF STATEMENT OF FAITH As we make our way through the celebration of the Easter season, we are also anticipating Pentecost Sunday. A Brief Statement of Faith of the PCUSA is intentionally divided into three sections. The final section, used on Pentecost, captures our belief about the Holy Spirit. On three successive Sundays, we have read portions of this affirmation of our faith: first, concerning Jesus our savior; second, God the creator; and finally, our sustainer, the Holy Spirit. A Brief Statement of Faith begins and ends with trinitarian statements, reminding us that God loves relationships.
