What is the congregation’s or organization’s vision for ministry: Our vision for ministry is declared in our mission statement: "We are called by the Spirit to glorify God so that all may become joyful disciples of Jesus Christ." Being called indicates that we are responding to God who "first loved us." Glorifying God means not only praising and worshiping God but also shedding light on God by our actions and words so that others might come to know God. Joyful disciples are ones who follow Jesus Christ in loving and serving others out of a grateful sense of being loved and forgiven by God and a desire to share that good news with others.

This vision is lived out at GSPC as we participate in worship, serve others, and meet in small groups for study and fellowship. We serve others through Interfaith Hospitality Network, Meals on Wheels, summer Urban Mission Camps including the Richard Mighell Day Camp for underprivileged youth at our Baytreat Retreat Center, and Mobile Training School Mentoring Program. We share the good news with those within the church through weekly sermons, Sunday School classes, Music Ministry, youth and children’s ministries, small group Bible Studies, Presbyterian Women Circles, Supper Clubs, and retreats.

How do you feel called to reach out to address the emerging needs of your community or constituency: GSPC is focused on 3 major emerging needs: 1) Supporting our children and youth; 2) investing in our downtown community; and 3) Strengthening and growing our membership.

Our downtown is undergoing a vibrant transformation. This provides us with a special opportunity to expand our reach and share God’s love with those living near our church. Many young adults and others are gravitating to the urban center to live, work, and play. While our current membership is based outside the downtown area, we need to draw from both Mobile and Baldwin Counties as well as our downtown community to expand our membership.

Our children and youth ministry is vitally important to the future of our church and our community. We have many active parents who want their children to have fun and learn at Sunday School, PYC and inspirational activities together inside and outside of the church.

As an urban/metropolitan church, in addition to those ministries mentioned above, we have significant opportunities to minister to the homeless and less fortunate who reside in our urban center. In order to progress and maximize to our full potential, we need to strengthen our volunteer and financial base to best serve our urban community.

In response to these opportunities, our Associate Pastor needs to be a willing, able and active participant in our congregation, the downtown community, and the spiritual growth of our children.

How will this position help you to reach your vision and mission goals: An Associate Pastor for Children, Youth, and Families would provide ministry with our children and youth in order to help them grow as joyful disciples of Jesus Christ. S/he will find ways to meet emerging needs through ministry with children and youth that builds relationships within the church and that connects our children and youth to their community through service.

The assessment of ministries such as Sunday School and Sunday evening PYC will create new opportunities to build faith in our young members. The Associate Pastor will be a pastoral resource to children, youth, and families in times of crisis or struggle, helping our young people know they are loved by God and by their church family. We look forward to our congregation growing stronger as our children and youth are nurtured in faith enabling us to more fully live out our identity as those who are called to serve.

What specific tasks, assignments, and program areas will this person have responsibility?

Develop, implement, and oversee the ministry of education for children age birth through 12th grade in collaboration with the Pastor and CE Committee.

Work with the Pastor to provide pastoral care to the congregation, particularly the children and youth and their families.

Work with the CE Committee to oversee childcare for GSPC. Responsibilities include the recruitment and training of employees and volunteers, maintenance of the nursery areas, and supervision of the Nursery staff.

Work with CE Committee to plan and implement special events, including Wee Worship, children’s activities, Children at the Lord’s Table, Youth confirmation, and youth ministry activities.

Plan for and implement the middle and high school youth using a team approach with youth, parents, and advisors.

Integrate the youth with the congregational life and the ministries of GSPC and within the Presbytery of South Alabama and the PC(USA).

Recruit, train, and coordinate youth advisors and Sunday School teachers.

Provide weekly worship leadership and preach once per month.

Provide pastoral care to the congregation and especially to children, youth, and their families Ensure the maintenance and update of all classrooms.

Perform other duties as requested by the Pastor (i.e., hospital visitation).
