SERVICE FOR THE LORD’S DAY THIRD SUNDAY OF ADVENT DECEMBER 16, 2018 | 10:45AM
A Festival of Lessons and Carols
GOVERNMENT STREET PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH MOBILE, ALABAMA
Welcome! It is with great pleasure that we welcome all who join us in worship this season of Advent. We worship God knowing that the celebration of the birth of our Messiah, Jesus Christ, is fast upon us and we give thanks that we can come together to join in the excitement that accompanies such a joyous celebration. Today is our annual Lessons and Carols service, where we hear and see the Word of God proclaimed through the reading of scripture, musical offerings, and a live nativity scene. This is truly an intergenerational worship service where many have brought their various gifts together as an offering to God. We pray that all who leave here following worship are able to feel the hope, peace, joy, and love that permeates this season and that these feelings may remain with you in the days and weeks to come.

Let the fire of your Spirit purge us of greed and deceit, so that, purified, we may find our peace in you and you may delight in us. We ask this through him whose coming is certain, whose day draws near, your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen.

THE PEOPLE’S RESPONSES ARE IN BOLD.
Advent is a time for God’s people to reawaken their longings. Sorrow may last for a night, but joy comes in the morning. In the darkness, we long to see the light. Sorrow may last for a night, but joy comes in the morning. In the silence, we long for a comforting word. Sorrow may last for a night, but joy comes in the morning. In hardship, we long for an act of love. Sorrow may last for a night, but joy comes in the morning. In Christ, we celebrate and rejoice in the promise of joy. CANDLE LIGHTING
PRAYER unison Gracious Lord, our joy is found in you, for not only did you enter into this world, but you became the hope of the world. From the cradle to the cross, you invite us to share in your victory. This is the fountain from which our joy flows. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

ANTHEM Love, Come This Blessed Morn
Louis F. Daniel
In a rocky stable on a bed of straw, Mary bore God’s gift, Love came that blessed morn. Joseph held him gently, as a dove softly cooed his simple song to the Savior that night, Gloria, Gloria in excelsis Deo, Gloria, Gloria, Love came that blessed morn. ‘Neath the azimuth glowing brightly as a flame, shepherds kept their flocks and wondered at the star. Falling to the hard earth as the heavenly hosts sang their herald song to the Savior that night. Wisemen from the East rode onward through the night to bring Christ their gifts, gold, myrrh, and frankincense. And as they adored him, zephyr winds lifted up their fragrant song to the Savior that night. Hear the timeless story, ever new again, of Love’s gentle power born to a mortal frame, our hearts, filled with wonder at a Father’s Love, bring joyous song to the Savior this morn.
