mini cv George Soutos was born in Drama, Greece. He studied construction technology for two years at the Technical University of Serres (2000-2002) spending his free time on photography, drawing, radio production, having always in his mind music and rhythm. In 2002, he quit to follow his real passion, Architecture, joining the Democritus University of Thrace in Xanthi (2002-2009). He spent is final year on his research Thesis, titled "the rustling of the city" [24 hours: Sound - Human - Feelings] and his design project. The latest was concerning the architectural design of a music workspace in the city of Xanthi, and has been published at a university journal. He has taken part is several workshops and seminars in Xanthi, the island of Thassos and Athens, both as a member and as a team leader. He has worked on music, photography, and soundfield composition for three theatrical plays of sforaris company and the Somma team of which he remains an active member. He has taken part in live production of electro-acoustic music and the design of sound environments for two fair expeditions. For his compositions he uses samples, programming and soundfield recordings, while he often likes to knock rhythmically his palms on percussions or any kind of objects that could possibly produce and interesting sound .He has co-organised a series of live music and other cultural events with Greek and international artists and has taken part in two photography expeditions. He has joined several architectural competitions and has been awarded twice. In 2009 he worked as a graduate architect at the architectural office of Dr Papagianopoulos, where he had the opportunity to be part of some great design projects. Since 2010 he has been following his own path, creating "Topos 24" an architectural design office where he designs the space and the non-space, the possible and the impossible. He is a member of the architecture and landscape comity of the Drama Chapter of the Technical Chamber of Greece.

Xanthi is a town in Northern Greece with 40.000 inhabitants. The town, known for itsdiversity in almost all its ways and in particular by its cultural diversity. Due to its location in the map and the tobacco industry during and after the 400 year occupation by the Turks, Xanthi has become a multicultural city, home for Greeks,Turks, Slavs, Armenians, Gypsies and others. This leads to a particular urban style with many specialties, contrasts and space formations. There is also a local community, the Pomaks, with a strong cultural background. Their culture and music was for many years suppressed but preserved in secrecy. Nevertheless it appears that many of the cultures and traditions of all these community are starting to get lost in our days due to political and other reasons.

"The city Of the thousand colours"
Having in mind the awaking of these peoples relationships, the conservation and projection of their traditions and the possibility of productive cultural interchange, I chose to design a music lab in a particular part of town where many of these cultures meet. Having a personal love for music and considering it one of the forms of art that creates direct connection among people without the need of speech, this lab, would involve all kinds of people irrespective to each ones origin and race and all kinds of music from the past until our times. In order to research the background on these cultures and their traditions, I visited a series of cultural community centers, talked to musicians from different backgrounds, walked in the neighborhoods of Xanthi and travelled to its villages where traditions are more intense and vibrant than in the city, in order to talk to people and understand the needs of musicians in the area. "Wherever we are, what we hear is mostly noise. When we ignore it, it disturbs us. When we listen to it, we find it John Cage fascinating."
During the design I tried to take under consideration the special characteristics and the needs of everyone involved, promoting all cultures, integrating the surrounding area intending to promote the existing feeling of the neighborhood, a place where musicians and passersby would blend. The basic aspects of the final solution involve the inclusion of a pedestrian public way within the building complex, the partial relief with the central square, common public spaces and small courtyards, the blending of scales of the area in achieving harmony, the interchange of light and shade, the explorative mood of the building creating a sense of mystery and successive reading, the close relation to the neighboring buildings, the geometry of the building in correlation with the acoustic demands.


The intervention area is located in the fast developing area of Athens, Metaxourghio. The program was divided into two separate sectors: An upper level residential complex, including commercial usage on the ground floor and the renovation of an old abandoned silk factory, which site stands right next to it where we had to intervene by renovating and designing youth art labs and a small library. Our purpose was also to shape the square adding an exhibition space for a well-known Greek artist Papaloukas and a small cafe.

Residential building
This subject was a great challenge, as it required the design of a residential building, bearing in mind mass of restrictions and several factors. At a building plot with confined space, neighboring with a square, we were expected to compose a complex of smaller and bigger houses, working spaces and stores. We should also renovate the old silk factory. All of the above were expected to be completed with a low cost.

Based on the main characteristics of the area and the neighborhoods around it (differences in layout, scale, height, uses, connectivity) our main goal was the use of layouts appropriate for maintaining the continuity and connectivity of our area with the others. Appreciating the special natural character of the neighborhood of Pilea with its water creaks and undeveloped structure we tried to enforce the use of the natural element in combination with a public network of walkways and pavements with controlled directions of movement.

24 hours of sound, space, human, senses The aim of this project is not just to research the relationship between space and sound, but most importantly, the manner in which these two factors affect the individual and his feelings. Basic questions that are looking for an answer through this research , is how the individual is affected by sound, how space and location determine this effect, and how this is translated in feeling.

It was a song different than the others, it ended when my journey did. At that moment, music and sound became one. I wake up, I look ahead, a blurry room... I can see a level which seems to have been formed through objects that have been optically represented. I see a frame on the wall which has been placed there in order to forget the walls existence, to forget what exists behind the wall (why should walls even exist?). I can touch in a restrained radius. I can smell a human body, the sent of the wine in the glass reminds me of yesterday. Nevertheless, sound, comes from everywhere! No restrictions. My brain is asking for it, it separates it, it reminds me the vastness of the universe, even when I have no particular desire to search or absorb.
"Ancient life was submerged in silence. In 19th century with the invention of machines, noise was born. Today, noise plays a major part in forming peoples' feelings [...] We can have a lot of fun if we imagine an orchestra by shopping malls, opening doors, crowded streets, train stations, textile factories and subways."


EFFECT : Cut Out The sudden lowering of the volume of the sound plays a great role in the perception of space and time since it marks the transition to a different space or a different sequence of events. Very often it is connected with the movement of the listener or the sound source. This effect can be resembled with the cut out filter of a synthesizer. This resemblance helps us understand the sound-space as a composition of sounds and interactions (between natural, social, cultural environment and inner sound-space of every person). The sound-space is a space of action within the existing space.
I was in a nonexisting space. I could see materials which cannot possibly be described. Jewelry that do not exist in the planet. It was an inter-galactic Super Market. The Super Market of the universe. What ever exists in the universe, one could find in this super market. I could see no walls; it was so huge that no walls where visible; but I could feel them. I was in vacuum, but I could step like in solid ground. From the speakers came a sound like which I had never heard before! It was the loudest noise I had ever heard but it made me feel as beautiful as ever... I asked: How much does that sound cost? They answered: This sound is not for sale. But we've got some others with 5 Euros. They insisted to buy, and I did.


This project aims to complete the imprint of a house [1st semester] and a road with the facades of the buildings surrounding it [2nd semester] located in the old city of Xanthi. A construction of a model and the architectural analysis of the area is accomplished with the help of theodolite, stave and measure tapes. Historical data where analysed and the time wear off, the colour, the uses and the transformations where studied alongside with construction details.

In a stone quarry at the area Sykies of Thessaloniki we were assigned to design an ephimeral complex of residence and flexible labs - exhibition spaces for 9-11 artists (sculptors, painters, video artists, etc.) giving priority to views, redefining the structure of residence as we know it. The residence is both, changing -based on the needs of each user- and folding in order to be movable.

The proposed complex refers to the city which is its part and also invites it. Dominant role at the composition of this subject, held the natural ground form. In the half of the large flat area in the front of the quarry were placed the laboratories and on the other half, which was left free, a little square was designed in order to "receive" the city life.

1. Laboratories where artists can work are built with concrete. The external place is formed on different levels and passages in order to allow the artists to work outdoors. 2. The main idea was the creation of two courtyards, the one having a more public character, and the other beeing more private and protected referring exclusively to the artists. Access to the lower private square is achieved through smaller descending levels and elevated passages.
3. A small theater is built inside the rock. Access to it is obtained through a passage dug in the rock. 4. The accommodation units, which are transferable, are placed separately on the slope of the quarry. They are described by a Strip. They consist of fixed and folding panels arranged according to the interior needs of the user. The folding panels constitute a light and flexible system of controlling the light and aeration for interior spaces.


Tranquility... Almost only nature. Some forgotten sounds signify the existence of yesterday. Nature is always alive. In a different manner every time every day. Human wakes up. He realizes he has been asleep. The machine keeps on working; always; awaiting an order. Human relaxes, machine relaxes, nature relaxes.

In the neighborhood of Ano Petralona, a spot where the Athenian land remains original with the building of the radio transmition as a logo of the estate, with filopapu hill overseeing everyday life, and in the end, Acropolis. We where called to design a residency there in a spot of 7 meters by 13. The unstable ground level and the intention to enter within the view, led us in locating the living room in the top floor, leading us to an alternative approach which created space with a particular interest as regards light, movement and view.

011 Architectural design: Small summer house in Asprovalta Date feb. 2011 Design team Soutos Georgios Place Asprovalta The town of Asprovalta is located at the foot of the Kerdil mountain. During the destruction of Asia minor in 1922, g4 families of refuges settled down at the coast of Asprovalta bringing with them their culture, their beliefs and their traditions. The project land is located at the area near the foot of the mountain, which is separated by the beach by the main public highway and a strip of trees. The field under concern is located at a lower level than the highway, directing me towards a two story solution in order to provide the much needed sea views from the roof-top veranda.

012 Architectural design: configuration of a school landscape Date feb. 2011 Design team Soutos Georgios Place Asprovalta The role of the school yard has been devalued during the past couple of decades in Greece. The typical Greek school yard is a big area covered in asphalt with oversimplified space management that suits the old teacher-centered model which constrains learning within the walls of the classroom. With the appropriate equipment and organization the school yard can enhance learning through purpose designed activities, increasing the practical interaction of children with nature and the environment. The schoolyard can be transformed to a dynamic environment for: Social development, aesthetical education, creation of democratic relationships, increase of love for nature and can be used for activities of a variety of learning sectors, such as maths, natural sciences, poetry, drawing, technology, art, history etc

Kάτω από τις σύγχρονες συνθήκες περιβαλλοντικής κρίσης η εκπαίδευση για θέµατα οικολογίας του περιβάλλοντος της φύσης αποτελεί ένα από τα κύρια µέσα που προτείνονται να χρησιµοποιηθούν για την ευαισθητοποίηση του ανθρώπου απέναντι στο περιβάλλον. Έτσι η κατάλληλα σχεδιασµένη ενίσχυση της παρουσίας της φύσης στον υπαίθριο σχολικό χώρο και ειδικότερα της βλάστησης, χάρη στον πλούτο των φυσικών και βιολογικών χαρακτηριστικών της, θα µπορούσε : να βελτιώσει την αισθητική και λειτουργική ποιότητα του σχολικού περιβάλλοντος να βοηθήσει το παιδί να γνωρίσει βασικές έννοιες που αφορούν τη φύση, να ενισχύσει τους δεσµούς του παιδιού µε τη φύση και το ενδιαφέρον του απέναντι στη φύση, να συµβάλει στον εθισµό του παιδιού στον επιστηµονικό τρόπο σκέψης µέσα από τη παρακολούθηση, διερεύνηση και ερµηνεία διάφορων βιολογικών φαινοµένων σχετικών µε τη βλάστηση και άλλα υλικά από τη φύση να αξιοποιηθεί για εκπαιδευτικές δραστηριότητες βιωµατικής µάθησης από διάφορες γνωστικές περιοχές

"Paraloges" or small everyday tragedies, is a play for the great and sudden events that happen at the most unsuspected times of our lives. Its heroes are our next door neighbors that could not stand the narrow boarders of their comfortable lives and changes everything with a great noise. It is a structured play, based on the stories of 4 traditional songs sang through the ages and transferred from generation to generation (1. The murdered, 2. The killer mother, 3.The brothers and the bad woman, 4. The shepherd lady.)

The contemporary Greek city is made up of some of the smallest urban blocks in Europe, with an accompanying dense network of small streets and incredibly narrow pavements. The competition proposes the assimilation of 4 inner-city urban blocks into a unified entity, with the aim of improving the neighborhood and the quality of life of the community. We chose Piraeus, the port of Athens as our intervention area.

ΚΤΙΡΙΑ ΓΡΑΦΕΙΩΝ ΜΕ ΕΜΠΟΡΙΟ ΣΤΟ ΙΣΟΓΕΙΟ (ΚΕΝΤΡΟ ΠΟΛΗΣ)
Σε κομβικό σημείο της περιοχής παρατηρούμε δύο μεγάλες περιοχές πρασίνου. Αυτοί οι δύο διακριτοί δημόσιοι χώροι θα μπορούσαν να συνενωθούν σε έναν μεγαλύτερο και ενιαίο αστικό πάρκο, ικανό να μεταφέρει την δυναμική της ένωσης και διαμπερούς επικοινωνίας των δύο λιμανιών. Προς αυτόν τον γενικότερο πολεοδομικό στόχο, επιλέγονται προς μελέτη τα τέσσερα οικοδομικά τετράγωνα που παρεμβάλλονται μεταξύ

των δύο αυτών διαθέσιμων χώρων. Σε μια προσπάθεια να ενεργοποιηθούν αυτοί οι δημόσιοι χώροι της πόλης, και να επιτευχθεί η ένωση τους με τρόπους πιο έμμεσους αλλά εξίσου αποτελεσματικούς.

Πιο συγκεκριμένα πρόκειται για τα τέσσερα οικοδομικά τετράγωνα που ορίζονται από τις περιφερειακές οδούς: 2ας Μεραρχίας, Κολοκοτρώνη, Σωτήρος, Φίλωνος και περιέχουν τους ενδιάμεσους δρόμους (σταυρός): Ναυάρχου Νοταρά και Μπουμπουλίνας. Ο εσωτερικός κόσμος των τεσσάρων τετραγώνων

χαρακτηρίζεται από την έλλειψη δημόσιου χώρου , διόγκωση του ιδιωτικού, στενόμακρους ακάλυπτους κτιρίων ανίκανους να σχηματίσουν έναν εσωτερικό κοινόχρηστο χώρο και μεγάλα ύψη κτιρίων που δίνουν στους δρόμους την αίσθηση ‘αστικών

υφιστάμενου περιβάλλοντος, μια συστηματικότερη καταγραφή, φανερώνει την παρουσία ενός εξώστρεφου δικτύου μικροτόπων διάσπαρτων μέσα στο υφιστάμενο οικοδομικό πλέγμα. Αδόμητα οικόπεδα, δώματα κτιρίων, δρόμοι, στοές-περάσματα, υφιστάμενα εξωτερικά κελύφη κτιρίων, αποτελούν νησίδες λίγο- πολύ τυπικές στο περιβάλλον της ελληνικής πόλης αλλά και πιθανές λύσεις που η ίδια η πόλη προσφέρει στο πρόβλημα της, και που συνθέτουν έναν μικρόκοσμο μεγεθών, υλικών, σχέσεων, ιδιαίτερα χρήσιμο, πλην όμως αποσπασματικό.
