Girl Scouting’s Highest Award Since Girl Scouts – North Carolina Coastal Pines was established in 2007, 970 Girl Scout Seniors and Ambassadors have achieved the highest award in Girl Scouting. Girl Scouts – North Carolina Coastal Pines takes great pride in recognizing the outstanding accomplishments of the 36 Girl Scouts who earned their Gold Award from April 2024 to March 2025. Hats off to all of our Gold Award Girl Scouts for demonstrating courageous leadership, advocacy, and compassion; and for making the world a better place.
Steps to the Gold Award Fulfilling the requirements for the Girl Scout Gold Award starts with the completion of two Senior or Ambassador Journeys or earning the Girl Scout Silver Award and completion of one Girl Scout Senior or Ambassador Journey. After the Journey requirement has been fulfilled, Girl Scouts spend a suggested minimum of 80 hours leading their team to tackle a community issue that impacts their target audience while raising awareness, educating, and inspiring others about the chosen issue and its root cause. Gold Award Girl Scouts work through the following steps on their path to success: • Identify an issue • Investigate it thoroughly • Get help and build your team • Create a plan • Present your plan and gather feedback • Take action • Educate and inspire

Addressing the impact of non-native plants on the local ecosystem, Elaina took steps to promote environmental responsibility and sustainability. She developed educational curricula for middle and high school students to teach the importance of native plants and their environmental benefits. To further raise awareness, she shared her knowledge with the community at a local farmers’ market, inspiring others to support a healthier, more sustainable environment.
Grace-Gardner focused on improving accessibility and safety for people with low vision in her community. Through presentations and improvements at churches and a therapy office, she showed her community how public spaces could be made safer and more accessible.
Catherine recognized the need to educate children about the role of plants in the environment. She developed educational presentations, brochures, and interactive signs for the Children’s Garden at Cape Fear Botanical Garden. These signs allow children to scan and learn more about various plant species, fostering curiosity and engagement with nature.

Lillian empowered aspiring teen artists by creating a magazine and club that provides meaningful opportunities to grow and succeed in the arts. Through published work and connections with industry professionals, she gave young creatives a platform to build their portfolios, gain confidence, and explore real-world pathways to artistic careers.
Gold Award Girl Scout Annalee focused on wildlife conservation by creating an educational program about the importance of natural nesting spaces for Bluebirds. She partnered with Blue Jay Point County Park to teach community members how to build nesting boxes, empowering them to support local bird populations. To further her impact, Annalee designed and installed nesting boxes throughout the park providing safe homes for these cherished birds.
Emily took steps to ensure the stories of Korean War veterans were not forgotten. She interviewed and recorded veterans’ experiences to develop a lesson plan for middle school students, helping them learn about the Korean War and the realities faced by soldiers. To continue this effort, she connected local veterans with her school’s NJROTC, encouraging the ongoing collection and sharing of these powerful personal histories.

Hillsborough, Orange County Project: The Impact of Hair Discrimination on Black Women’s Experience | Theme: DEIA-RJ Notable Mentions:
Toria set out to strengthen the selfesteem of Black girls facing harmful stereotypes around appearance— specifically colorism, texturism, and featurism. She organized educational panels and workshops and published a children’s book to inform the community and empower girls from kindergarten through high school to embrace their beauty and build lasting self-confidence.
Raising awareness about the effects of hair discrimination, particularly on Black women, helped bring attention to the need for equity and representation in schools and public policy. Through an educational campaign, students learned about the CROWN Act and why its adoption at both the school system and state level is essential for creating inclusive environments. To further her advocacy, Genesis contacted elected officials, emphasizing the importance of legislative change in promoting diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility, aligning her initiative with the DEIA-RJ theme.

Apex, Wake County Project: Preservation and Publication of St Mary Magdalene’s Founding Pastor’s Sermons | Theme: Arts, Culture & Heritage Notable Mentions: Claire demonstrated how one Girl Scout can make a lasting impact by preserving her community’s history. To ensure future generations could access the teachings of St. Mary Magdalene’s founding priest, Claire collected over 1,200 sermons and created an archive. She also compiled a book of 70 selected sermons with related scriptures, which will be used in faith formation classes.
Samantha L. D. Raleigh, Wake County Project: The Mythology of Dogs | Theme: Animals Notable Mentions: Samantha wanted to support a local rescue for dogs saved from high-kill shelters. She organized an awareness event to promote the rescue’s mission and created a virtual bulletin board where dog owners could connect, share advice, and foster a supportive network.
Madysen Brooke E. Goldsboro, Wayne County Project: Sustainable Garden at the P.O.R.T.A.L. | Theme: Poverty Creating a sustainable garden at a local shelter provided residents with more than just fresh food—it offered a pathway to self-sufficiency and empowerment. Madysen designed the garden not only to supply nutritious produce but also to teach residents essential life skills, such as growing their own food and maintaining a healthy diet.

Apex, Wake County Project: Teal Ribbons for Teens | Theme: Healthy Relationships Notable Mentions: Binithi took a stand against sexual violence affecting young women and members of the LGBTQ+ community by organizing an event to educate her peers. She provided students with essential information about sexual assault, the available resources, and ways to support victims. To extend her efforts, Binithi created a website to raise awareness and continue the conversation beyond the event. Her initiative is a powerful reminder that Girl Scouts can address critical social issues and make a lasting difference.

Evie developed a visual journaling calm-down tool to help children ages 5-10 build healthy emotional coping strategies. Designed as an accessible resource, her tool supports students who may not yet be writing or who face language barriers, making emotional expression more inclusive.
Madelyn wanted to create a safe, social space for teens to relax without peer pressure. She installed a Gaga pit at her church, offering instructions for its use to encourage teens to unwind and socialize.
Kirina wanted to make patients and caregivers at hospice facilities feel more at home. She installed bird feeders outside of patients’ rooms at a local hospice center to provide both something peaceful to observe while in the rooms and also an outdoor space for patients and their families to visit for some fresh air and time away from the medical setting.

After advocating to the Cumberland County Board of Commissioners, she launched workshops to educate her peers and established period closets in seven schools—ensuring students have access to essential supplies and don’t have to miss school because of their periods.
Lorelei’s project expanded therapy options for children at Riverside Ranch, a therapeutic riding facility. She created barn boxes with sensory toys to improve children’s motor skills and core strength while they rode horses.
Julia demonstrated how one Girl Scout can make a lasting impact on environmental education. Concerned that children didn’t understand their role in the water cycle, she created presentations for kids ages 4-14 about water pollution’s impact on the environment. To make learning fun, she designed a board game that was shared with other environmental groups.

Milly recognized the growing need for mental health support among teens and took action by creating an eightsession program aimed at preventative care and crisis management. Her program, implemented at her high school and two others, taught students mindful practices to help deescalate stressful situations and manage their mental well-being. Her work empowers teens with the tools they need to take care of themselves and support each other, demonstrating how meaningful change can start with one person’s dedication to their community.
Pranathi was passionate about creating opportunities for neurodiverse children to express themselves through dance. She taught children with autism how to dance in a public setting, helping to boost their self-confidence and offering them an experience not typically available to them. By creating a supportive space for these children to thrive, Pranathi opened doors for creative expression and inclusion.

She partnered with the school to design both indoor and outdoor spaces that provide students with a supportive environment when they are struggling with emotional regulation. Additionally, Ella shared her work with other schools, helping them create similar spaces to support their own students.

Nicole saw the need for more inclusive performance opportunities and took action by founding the Hidden Gold Theatre, a space where children of all abilities could shine. When overdevelopment threatened local wildlife habitats, Ashlyn knew something had to be done. Fueled by a passion for protecting nature, she teamed up with community organizations to raise awareness about habitat loss and its impact on local ecosystems. But she didn’t stop there. Ashlyn took a hands-on approach, teaching others how to build wildlife homes, giving animals a safe space to thrive even in changing environments.
Nyah developed a free preschool music curriculum to ensure that children, regardless of their financial situation, could be introduced to music at an early age. Her curriculum not only fostered a love for music but also provided the academic, physical, and social benefits that come with early music education. She offered this program at several preschools, giving young children the opportunity to experience the joys and developmental advantages of music.

Misty Crabtree Eastham Scholarship
The GSUSA Gold Award Scholarship is awarded annually to one Girl Scout from each council who has demonstrated extraordinary leadership, measurable and sustainable impact, and addressed an issue of national and/or global significance. Girl Scouts who earn their Gold Award between April 1 and March 31 and are high school seniors or graduates are eligible to apply. Girl Scouts who earn their Gold Award in 9th through 11th grade will be eligible to apply when they reach 12th grade. The annual recipient will receive movement-wide recognition, and may have an opportunity to represent Girl Scouts through public relations, speaking engagements, or other related opportunities.
The Misty Crabtree Eastham Scholarship was established to honor the memory of lifelong Girl Scout Misty Crabtree Eastham, and provides scholarships for Gold Award Girl Scouts to help defray college expenses. As a girl in foster care, Misty joined Girl Scouts and gained a network of friends to support and guide her— friends who joined her in a journey of adventure that provided life-changing opportunities. Misty’s scholarship recognizes and rewards Girl Scouts with these same qualities. Misty completed an Associate’s degree, a Bachelor’s degree, a certificate program, and had been accepted to a Pharmacy Tech program before she was diagnosed with her cancer.

Gladys Marion Scholarship
The Jane S. Barringer Award was established to honor Mrs. Barringer, an outstanding teen advisor who has been a dedicated Girl Scout for more than 50 years. A group of her former Girl Scouts, along with Girl Scouts – North Carolina Coastal Pines and the Barringer family, have instituted an award in her name to be given to an individual who embodies the principles and spirit “Mrs. B” works to instill. This award is open to Gold Award Girl Scouts who are high school seniors or adult professionals pursuing further education or skill development.
The Gladys Marion Scholarship was made possible by a lifetime member of Girl Scouts who gave of her time and shared her talents to support Girl Scouts as they developed their leadership skills and prepared to be the next generation of leaders. This four-year scholarship recognizes those who have demonstrated significant leadership as members of Girl Scouts – North Carolina Coastal Pines through earning their Girl Scout Gold Award or equivalent participation in council leadership programs.
