Welcome to SummerFest at GSL Summer is just around the corner, which means so is SummerFest! For over 30 years, GSL has offered summer programs to all boys and girls in the Memphis area - regardless of school affiliation - and I am proud to have been a part of the last eight. We offer a variety of programs for every interest, from sports, science and reading to hip hop, math and art. GSL's SummerFest provides a safe and fun environment each week, while giving your child the opportunity to experience something new and create longlasting friendships.Â

Camp Policies SummerFest 2018 @ GSL is open to all students entering JK through eighth grade, regardless of school affiliation. Programs for rising PK students are for returning GSL students only. Programs are limited and fill up quickly, so register now at gslschool.org. Program fees must be paid in full for your child to be considered registered. All programs are filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Cancellations must be made via email to Emily Merrell, Director of SummerFest, five business days prior to the start date in order to receive a refund (less a $25 cancelation fee). If not cancelled before this time, no refund will be given.

Campers may not be registered for a partial week. A late pick-up fee of $5 per minute, due at time of pick up, will be charged for any child who remains after 5:30 p.m. GSL reserves the right to cancel a program due to insufficient enrollment. Refunds will be issued for any such cancellations. GSL may also add a program after the print date of this brochure.   It is expected that every student attending SummerFest adhere to the school's procedures and standards of behavior, which can be located online at gslschool.org, Choose GSL, SummerFest. GSL reserves the right to dismiss any student with a discipline problem or who is disruptive to SummerFest activities. By registering for SummerFest, you agree to allow GSL to publish photos, artwork, videos, podcasts, and any other materials created by your children or featuring your children, in both online and printed communication materials for GSL, unless you notify the SummerFest Director in writing otherwise. Swimming                  Group and individual swim lessons are available for PK-SK students.  Lessons will be taught by long-time swim instructor Audra Eickhoff. Group lessons are available from 8-8:30 a.m. for PK-JK  and 8:30-9 a.m. for SK.   Group lessons and individual lessons are available the following dates: June 11-15, June 25-29, July 9-13, July 16-20, July 23-27 & July 30-August 3. Group Lessons - $35/week.  Private Lessons are scheduled at your convenience for PK-8th.  $45 per 30 min session Call 901.278.2770 or email emerrell@gslschool.org to schedule swim lessons today! 

Tutoring GSL is offering private, one-on-one tutoring. We offer individual learning goals for each student in math, reading, science, as well as ISEE tutoring. Our goal is to build confidence and understanding while instilling independent learning skills that students can apply throughout the child’s learning career.   Instructors: Lyn Forsyth, Julia Roberson and Janet Webster. SummerFest @ Miss Lee's   For students entering PK, JK, SK Miss Lee's at GSL, 1760 Peabody Early care begins at 7:30 a.m. and is $25 per week. Morning programs run from 9 a.m. until 12 p.m. Aftercare is available each week for $75 per week until 5:30 p.m. Lunch is from 12-1 pm and is only for children registered all day. Morning campers should bring a morning snack and drink. All-day campers should bring a morning snack and drink, a lunch, an afternoon snack and drink, plus a blanket if needed for nap time. All campers should bring swimsuits or extra clothes for water play, as well as towels and sunscreen.

Week #4: June 25-29 Little Dribblers - PK - SK 9am-12pm Computer Explorers $200 2 SPORTS….1 AWESOME WEEK!!! Little Dribblers will have a blast experiencing the fun of both basketball and soccer in a fun and nurturing environment. Our program works with the basics of soccer and basketball, including, but not limited to, hand-eye coordination, ball handling, footwork, dribbling, shooting, passing, and scoring a goal.  We also include songs, drills, and games to incorporate numeracy and language skills each day.  Most important, we keep it fun and exciting for the kids  while promoting self-esteem, sports etiquette, and benefits of exercise.

Beginning paleontologists learn about dinosaurs and the techniques used in extracting fossils in this handson class. Go on your own fossil dig, analyze and assemble skeleton pieces, produce a fossil reconstruction, create a mural, use iPads to learn more about dinosaurs… and take home lots of cool dinosaur daily projects!

Campers will explore the world of art as they are introduced to various art textures used around the world.  Children will take home their very own portfolio at the end of the week.

Camp Paw Patrol - Rising PK-SK 9am-12pm Ashley Blake & Savanna McCarty $125  Take to the air with Skye, learn how to be safe with Chase and Marshall, build and recycle with Rubble and Rocky, and explore the jungle and seas with Tracker and Zuma! Preschoolers will love learning all about the jobs of their favorite Paw Patrol characters in this fun, hands-on class.

This is an irresistible opportunity for our younger campers to develop coordination skills and have fun learning various dance movements with today’s hottest music. Showcase on Friday for the parents.

SummerFest

For students entering Grades 1-8 Anchor Center, 250 Lemaster What you need to know: Every week, early morning care begins at 7:30 a.m. and is free. Morning camp sessions run 8 a.m.-12 p.m. and afternoon camp sessions run from  1-5 p.m. After-camp care is available until 5:30 p.m. at no charge. All campers must be picked up by 5:30 p.m. Lunch is from 12-1 p.m. and only for children registered for both morning and afternoon sessions; send a healthy lunch and drink. All campers should bring a snack for each session, swimsuits or extra clothes for water play, as well as towels and sunscreen. When time permits, campers will enjoy swim breaks at GSL's pool near the Preschool building. *Morning and afternoon care are not available for campers attending Grizzlies basketball camp*

Old School Sci-Fi Rising 5th–8th 8am-12pm Allyson Campbell $125   Let’s go back to the days before everything was done on a computer!  Come explore the classics of Star Wars, the Labyrinth, and more with crafts, snacks and movies. Spanish Immersion Camp Rising 1st-4th 1pm-5pm Cynthia Goodfellow $125 Learn more about Spanish culture through food, dance, language and art.  From Rustic to Aristocratic Food Rising 5th–8th 1pm-5pm Marie Busse $125 Come learn to create delectable creations starting with simple, rustic recipes and ending with a dish created for the wife of Louis XV, all prepared from scratch.  Cooking classes will be hands-on in groups and will cover kitchen safety, culinary vocabulary, and encourage teamwork.  Best of all we will get to taste our creations.  (We will be cooking with dairy and nut products.  Also swim time will depend on achieving daily cooking goals.) LEGO Construction Camp Rising 1st-5th 1pm–5pm Joyce Bruno & Carrie Galphin $125 A fun-filled week building with LEGOs, K’nex, marble run, Lincoln Logs, blocks and much more!

Soccer Camp Rising 1st-8th 1pm–5pm Midtown Soccer Academy $125 Beginners, intermediate and advanced soccer players welcome in this camp! Learn new skills and techniques or sharpen your skills in dribbling, passing, and shooting!  SCORE!

From unsolved mystery challenges and reading prints to the secrets of splatter and how maggots tell all.  This week is sure to heighten your senses! Creative Writing Rising 4th-8th 8am-12pm Lyn Forsyth $125 Sharpen your skills by writing about all kinds of topics.  You’ll then bind them together in a book that you will create and design.

Duct Tape Fun Rising 1st-4th  1pm-5pm Porshe Smith $125  Duct tape isn’t just for fixing things!  Create purses, wallets, pillows, art and so much more with colorful duct tape.  Urban Scout Rising 2nd-5th  1pm-5pm Amie Plumley $125  Explore traditional camping skills and crafts in an urban setting.  Campers will take a closer look at nature and the resources around them.  Activities include woodworking, kitchen science, nature crafts, weaving and a camp-in on Friday.  Video Game Creation Rising 5th-8th  1pm-5pm Bits, Bytes & Bots $150  Don't just play games, learn how to create them!  Campers will use game creation software to create and program their own PC-based video game.  They will learn about sprites, objects, events and actions.  Make scoring systems, multiple levels and even add sounds. Campers will take home their finished game on a CD at the end of camp.  Middle School Fun Rising 5th-6th 1m-5pm Lyn Forsyth $125  Swim, watch movies, enjoy snacks, play on the computer and more.

Time will be provided to complete any required summer math work.  Coding Cadets: Bootcamp for Coders Rising 1st-5th 8am-12pm Computer Explorers $215 This bootcamp is sure to shape up the coolest coder in your family.  Campers do not need any previous coding skills. Campers will work on daily coding projects and will use programmable floor robots, AGV robots, and Lego robots throughout the week.  Creativity and engineering skills will be sharpened. These experiences are designed to build interest, knowledge, and technical skills the campers can take with them into the classroom and beyond. Time Travelers: Ancient Egypt Rising 2nd–5th   8am-12pm Elizabeth Bayzie $125 Ever wanted to travel back in time?  Archeologists get to do this everyday as they unearth secrets of the past.  Come “travel” with us as we explore life in ancient Egypt and the inventions that changed the world.  Summer Math Wrap Up Rising 3rd-4th   8am-12pm Jane Williams $125 Review last year’s math skills and get a head start on 3rd & 4th grade with games and activities.  Time will be provided to complete any required summer math work.

Week #6: July 16-20 First Aid 101 – CPR Instruction Rising 5th-8th   8am-12pm Nina Callan, RN, BSN $125 Become CPR certified for babysitting, lifeguarding, or to possibly save a life. Each camper will receive a CPR-certified card at the end of the week.  Golf Camp Rising 6th-8th  8am-12pm Ashley Lamar $125  Learn the basics of a golf swing, as well as the rules and etiquette of the game from a former PGA Apprentice Professional.  Golfers of all experience levels welcome.    Funky Fairy Tales Rising 1st-3rd 1pm-5pm Sara Ralston $125 Play goofy games, create crazy art, write silly stories and cook kooky snacks based on different versions of fairy tales we all know and love.  I Scream for Ice Cream Rising 1st-4th 1pm-5pm Ashley Blake $125  Make homemade creations everyday including ice cream, yogurt and sherbet!  Electronic Games Camp Rising 4th-8th 1pm-5pm Robert Ward $125  Virtual bowling, tennis, and fitness, oh my! Week #7: July 23-27 Summer Reading Wrap-Up Rising 1st-2nd 8am-12pm Sara Ralston $125  Enjoy books by your favorite authors and play games, create art, and make snacks based on the books. Time will be provided to complete summer reading requirements. Current GSL students will also be able to take AR tests.  Intro to Drone Flying Missions Rising 1st-2nd 8am-12pm Drobots $200 Intro to Drone Flying Missions is specifically designed for campers with little to no experience flying drones. Through the use of iPad flight simulators and clear instructions on basic flying maneuvers, young Drobots’ pilots will experience a program filled with excitement, games, challenges, and learning. Campers will enjoy Tic-Tac-Drone, Drone Darts, Duck-DuckDrone, and more. All campers go home with interactive workbooks and plenty of Drobots Company keepsakes and trinkets. Drone safety and the social responsibilities of flying drones are included in this program.  Art Camp with the Art Project Rising 1st-4th  8am–12pm The Art Project $165 Explore a wide variety of materials while also learning about various artists and techniques.   Grossology Rising 2nd – 5th  8am–12pm Elizabeth Bayzie $125   If you enjoy things that make most people’s skin crawl, then this is the camp for you!  Join us as we delve into the science of all things gross!  Summer Reading Wrap Up Rising 3rd-4th 8am-12pm Jane Williams $125  Enjoy books by your favorite authors and play games, create art, and make snacks based on the books.  Time will be provided to complete summer reading requirements. Week #7: July 23-27 Minecraft Madness Rising 3rd-8th 8am-12pm Ashley Lamar $125  Survive, build, code and more in this popular, pixilated program!  Campers must have an online (computer use) Minecraft Account.  (Xbox and Pocket Edition versions of the game do not provide an online account.) Online accounts need to be purchased and verified at minecraft.net prior to camp.  Those who do not bring their account information will have the option of using  iPads to play.   Checkmate for Beginners Rising 1st-5th 1pm-5pm Mid-South Chess $125  Learn how to play the royal game of chess!  Chess has been proven to improve concentration, analytical abilities, and critical thinking all while having fun!  Classes separated by age and skill level.  Magic of Musical Theater Rising 1st-5th 1pm-5pm Leslie Reddick $125  Experience the magic and fun of musical theatre.  Come sing and dance to songs like “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious” and “I Won’t Grow Up.” Hip Hop Camp Rising 1st-8th 1pm-5pm Robert Ward and M-Town Image $125   Mr. Robert, owner of “M Town Image,” the locally grown and nationally known dance crew, will work with campers to develop coordination skills and various dance moves with today’s hottest music.   Ultimate Drone Obstacle Challenge Rising 3rd-5th  1pm-5pm Drobots $200 Ultimate Drone Obstacle Challenge is specifically designed for both novice and experienced drone enthusiasts. Campers will learn how to perform various exercises and maneuvers to become familiar with the drone’s speed and agility. They'll also create the design and help build the the obstacle course in preparation for the last day’s final activity and competition. All campers go home with interactive workbooks and plenty of Drobots Company keepsakes and trinkets. Drone safety and the social responsibilities of flying drones are included in this program.  Make a Rube Goldberg Machine! Rising 4th-8th  1pm-5pm Lyn Forsyth $125  Have you ever seen a Rube Goldberg machine? By definition, it is a machine that performs a very simple task in a very complicated and over-engineered manner. Come have fun with us this summer and build a Rube Goldberg machine.

Math is fun!  Drone Racing and Obstacle Course Challenge Rising 6th-8th 8am-12pm Drobots $200 Campers will learn how to perform various exercises and maneuvers to become familiar with the drone’s speed and agility. Flight squads post up against one another in friendly competition when they race themselves and the clock. Participants contribute fully in this program as they create the design and help build the the obstacle course in preparation for the last day’s final activities and competition. Drone safety and social responsibilities of flying are included in this program.  Volleyball Camp Rising 7th-8th  GIRLS ONLY 8am-12pm MS Volleyball Coaches $125 Learn the basics of serving, passing, setting and hitting, plus the rules of the game and team play.

Enjoy a week of swashbuckling fun with pirate stories, games, crafts, food and more!  Battlebots Rising 1st-6th 1pm-5pm Computer Explorers $215 Battlebots camp will allow students to design, build, program and control their own battlebot and compete in head-to-head competitions. Students will work with multiple types of bots for their competitions and challenges each day of camp.  Engineers will pound, smash, flip, rip, and destroy their opponents bot.     Manners 101 Rising 2nd-4th 1pm-5pm Jennifer Atkins $125 Learn how to write thank-you notes, set and clear a table, make introductions, be a good guest, and even how to handle “sticky” social situations!  Drone Superhero Missions Rising 3rd-5th 1pm-5pm Drobots $200 Superhero Missions is specifically designed for both novice and experienced drone enthusiasts. Students will begin the week learning basic maneuvers before using their “Spidey-Sense” to conquer missions such as Batman’s Drone-Mobile Escape, The Breakout of Iron Man and more. Participants will storyboard their own escape missions while other students attempt to outsmart them using the drone to locate and capture. Drone safety and the social responsibilities of flying drones are included in this program. All campers go home with interactive workbooks and plenty of Drobots Company keepsakes and trinkets.
