HEAD OF SCHOOL We are talking a lot about creativity this year at Grace-St. Luke’s Episcopal School. As part of our groundbreaking work with the Elementary Schools Research Collaborative, we believe it is important to nurture and develop not only the academic skills needed for success in high school and life but also non-cognitive skills or character strengths that are so critical to success and life happiness. Each year, we spend time focusing on at least one of the main non-cognitive skills, and this year, it is creativity. Creativity is an incredibly important but sometimes misunderstood skill that is becoming more vital for later success in life. While most people think of creativity in relation to artistic endeavors, it goes beyond that tried and true definition. So while creativity is and always will be associated with painting, drawing, sculpting, dancing, and acting, in today’s knowledge economy, it takes on a much broader definition. Creativity in today’s economy expands to include generating new ideas in any field and synthesizing and combining ideas in unique and useful ways across a variety of endeavors. The evidence is all around us that the ability to create and innovate is valued more highly than the ability to recall vast amounts of knowledge. In the age of Google and smartphones, we all have access to a breathtaking amount of information. The key is to be able to understand information, analyze it, and create something new with it. We work hard to encourage our children to look at problems in new and creative ways. Beginning in Preschool, children use their imaginations to create art, but also to tell stories and make sense of their daily lives. This play serves an important function; it encourages young children to solve problems. When our teachers sit with children and asking them to narrate their play, it enlarges their thinking and engages them in making sense of the world around them-analyzing, synthesizing, and creating meaning out of their experiences. This vocabulary building exercise encourages them to use their imaginations and helps them extend their original idea into new areas and connections. As you will see in the pages of this Anchor, our outcomes are strong. With a strong foundation in our play-based preschool, they learn to be creative problem solvers
throughout their time at GSL. The proof is in the pudding: our students are successful in rigorous academic environments around the city and indeed, around the country. But even more important, they have the creativity and imagination to be leaders here at GSL and beyond. Our graduates are routinely elected to key leadership roles in high schools across the city, and it is because of their training and upbringing here at GSL. So as you read our Anchor magazine, you will see evidence of how a creative mindset is nurtured and developed here at GSL.

HOW CREATIVE ARE YOU?

We’ve chosen Creativity as a special theme this year at GSL. Creativity is one of the 21st century skills, along with collaboration, critical thinking, and communication. Creativity is part of our mission statement and also found in our Mission Skills Assessment. As educators at GSL, we are very mindful of the important role that creativity plays in our profession and in our daily work with students. I observe two types of creativity at GSL. One is teaching creatively and the second is teaching for creativity, which author Ken Robinson best describes. “Teaching creatively means that the teachers use their own creative skills to make ideas and content more interesting. Some of the great teachers we know are the most creative teachers because they find a way of connecting what they’re teaching to student interests. But you can also talk about teaching for creativity, where the pedagogy is designed to encourage other people to think creatively. You encourage kids to experiment, to innovate, not giving them all the answers but giving them the tools they need to find out what the answers might be or explore new avenues.” Senior Kindergarteners have the opportunity to be creative in the classroom in their study of eight different artists. Students create and produce reproductions of the artists’ work. They also compile an art history journal on each artist. In first grade, students continue their journaling but focus on themselves, free writing each morning about their day. Second graders take the foundations of novels and create their own unique stories through different mediums, like puppets or drawing. Third graders are encouraged to create their math problems and solve their partners’ problems. Fourth graders present in-depth presentations to classmates about their favorite part of the skeletal system they studied. Third graders create their own thermostats during lower school science lab.

GSL certainly has teachers who are creative and who teach for creativity. Our teachers develop engaging units of study, provide students choice in their learning and provide students with opportunities to work in collaboration with others. We have much to celebrate when it comes to teaching creativity, but we also have room for improvement. The sad reality is that young children come to school thinking of themselves as creative, but as time goes by, they lose that sense of creativity; by the time they are adults, most of them feel they are not creative at all. Something happens as we grow up. Somehow we lose the capacity for creativity. We come to Preschool and Lower School thinking we are creative and demonstrate that we are, but by the time we grow, up we just don’t see ourselves as creative. This dilemma is not localized to GSL, but across America. Our challenge as teachers and parents is to help our children maintain a sense of creativity, regardless of their age. Creativity, along with the other 21st-century skills, are important for our children to possess because your children will be entering the work place to jobs that don’t even exist today.

Field trip opens students’ eyes to cultural differences of other religions. Every year, GSL’s long-time Bible and World Religions teacher John Stewart embarks on one of the school’s most meaningful tasks: instructing Middle School students in Christianity. As an Episcopal school, GSL has a mission that finds its specific expression within the structure of the faith and practices of the Episcopal Church, and the Episcopal worldview is one that espouses reasoning and discernment, questioning and critical thinking. To that end, Stewart is charged each year not only with teaching Bible and helping GSL’s students explore the tenets of Christianity, but also with sharing information about other cultures’ faiths and worldviews. When exploring complex concepts such as faith and religion, Stewart and his Middle School colleagues realized some years ago that it is helpful to provide students with tangible, concrete example of topics under discussion. Thus, the World Religions field trip was born. So three times a year, Stewart organizes a rich and fascinating day trip for students in his World Religions rotation block to go off campus and explore other churches and houses of worship in Memphis. While the trip varies slightly from year to year, this spring Stewart had a full day organized for his students with multiple stops: Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, Indian Cultural Center and Temple, and Quan Am Buddhist Monastery, plus lunch at an Indian restaurant and a tour through the Holocaust Memorial Exhibit at the Belz Museum of Asian & Judaic Art. At the first stop at Annunciation on Highland, students met Reverend James Berends, who gave them a tour of the church, stopping to smell the beeswax candles in the narthex, Grade 7 World Religions students outside the India Cultural Center and Temple in Eads.

reviewing the beautiful iconography inside the church, and explaining the importance of the iconostasis, a kind of separating screen that doesn’t provide a full view of the holiest images but allows a sort of “glimpse of heaven” for parishioners in attendance. He reminded the students of the importance of trying to see with heavenly eyes, and realizing that the only thing that an individual can change is him or herself. “Liturgy is the work of the people, not a spectator sport.” Berends said. At the next stop, India Cultural Center and Temple in Eads, students took off their shoes upon entering and met Dr. Prasad Duggirala, a retired general surgeon who guided them on a tour. He told the students about Hindu gods

and goddesses, the seven chakras or energy centers, and explained how the gold and precious stones visible in some of the sanctums were placed to attract different energy from the planets, sun, and moon. He taught them about the beloved god Rama Parivar, who represents the perfect man whose conduct on earth is ideal, and talked about the Hindu belief in peace, which includes guiding toward inner peace and contributing to world peace. Finally, at the Quan Am Buddist Monastery, they learned about the Hindu prince Buddha, the mission to inspire humankind to respect the natural world, and how nirvana is related to becoming awakened and enlightened. After a break for an Indian lunch, the students went downtown to the Belz Museum for a sobering look at the Holocaust Memorial Exhibit on display, plus a tour of the beautiful Asian and Judaic art. The field trip included homework to help students reflect on what they learned during the full and thought-provoking day. As Stewart explained, going out to various houses of worship provided an opportunity to give students a first-hand experience with the tenets and faith practices they have only talked about conceptually in the classroom. The students enjoyed the chance to match a real, tangible practice with something they have read about previously. “Going out like this helps us learn new things we may not have caught the first time in the classroom,” said 7th grader Avery Hastings.

“It’s interesting to get to talk to people who actually practice a different religion,” added 7th grader Bennett Vaughan. “Peering into the window of other religions provides the students some understanding of beliefs and practices with which they might not have been familiar,” Stewart explained. “As these boys and girls add to their awareness of other cultures and practices—from recognizing significant holidays, viewpoints, theology, and values, to even noticing differences in dress, or architecture—they can be better prepared to empathize and converse with a more heterogenous citizenry, and maybe even deepen their own relationship with God.”

Harris and Anna Jordan welcomed Harry Jordan on Thursday, September 10. Forrest Edwards* was accepted to law school at the University of Memphis. Kendall Jones, Little Luker’s Assistant, is engaged to William Franklin. Their wedding is planned for July 9, 2016.

Will Taylor is a second-year doctoral student at Brown University in the particle astrophysics group studying dark matter. This fall, he traveled to Portugal for a week’s worth of meetings before spending several weeks in South Dakota, conducting research at the Sanford Underground Research Facility – one mile underground!

Jae Hechinger graduated Magna Cum Laude from Birmingham-Southern College. She received the BSC Fine Arts Society Award for Academic & Creative Excellence in Theatre Arts and the Dr. Robert Poczatek Award from the BSC music department for contributions from a non-music major. She also played Cathleen in BSC’s Spring Opera, Riders to the Sea.

GSL ALUMNI ASSOCIATION BOARD MEMBERS Board members of the GSL Alumni Association met for a fall social gathering at Lafayette’s Music Room in mid-October. The Alumni Board helps to promote GSL School, to find lost alumni, and to keep fellow alumni informed and connected. The board also plays a highly active and important role in helping to organize the extremely popular All-School Reunion, which is held every four years. (The next reunion will be in May, 2018.)

THE 2015-2016 ANNUAL FUND First, a few facts...
WHO?
GSL School. The Annual Fund is the single-largest fundraiser produced each year. (The Parents Association’s Anchor Auction is the second-largest money maker.)
WHAT? The Annual Fund is a supplemental source of income for the school. Tuition covers about 80-85% of the GSL’s operating budget. The Annual Fund makes up the difference, enabling GSL to keep the classrooms smaller; to hire talented, better qualified teachers; to provide greater academic resources and technologies; to ensure sufficient facilities maintenance; and much more.

WHY?
GSL is not a for-profit business. Our mission is education. By design, high-quality schools are labor-intensive and peopleoriented. Combining classrooms and reducing staff would not benefit our students. The bulk of Annual Fund gifts support faculty salary and benefits. Teachers are our most important asset, yet most of them earn less than their public school peers. They choose to work at GSL, because they value its commitment to children. Your donations to the Annual Fund directly support their efforts and enhance the quality of each child’s experience while on campus.
THIS YEAR’S GOAL FOR THE ANNUAL FUND IS $230,000.
WHAT ELSE? • Do other independent schools have annual funds? Yes. They ALL do.
• Who oversees the Annual Fund? The GSL Development Department (Denise DuBois Taylor, Sherry Emerson, and Kate Shelton) works with parent chairs and volunteers to raise funds each year. Under the watchful eye of the Head of School and the Board of Trustees, the day-to-day management of the dollars raised falls into the capable hands of John Adrian, GSL’s Director of Finance. • Does GSL have an endowment? Yes. The school has six Endowment Funds: • The Anchor Fund - Providing long-term stability through a variety of investment opportunities. • The Dennis Cain Facilities Fund - For the maintenance of school buildings and grounds. • The Scholarship Fund - Providing need-based financial assistance to families of students. • The Library Fund - Promoting and supporting the GSL School library. • The Technology Fund - Providing state-of-the-art technology to students and staff. • The Arts Fund - Promoting and supporting a variety of arts activities, schoolwide. • Can a small gift make a difference? Yes! Our school community has fewer supporters than a major high school or college. Because the number of donors is limited, the need is large, making every gift count! No matter how small, every gift matters and directly affects the experience of each student.
• All donations to the Annual Fund are tax-deductible! • You may pledge now and pay later. (Donors have until July 2016 to pay off their pledges.)

• You can be a Lead Donor for as little as $42 a month!

MEET GSL’S ANNUAL FUND CO-CHAIRS FOR 2014 - 2015 Bubba and Eleanor Halliday live in midtown Memphis and are parents of three GSL children: sixth-grader William, third-grader Palmer, and second-grader Betsy. A lifelong Memphian, Bubba majored in finance at UT-Knoxville and serves as Chief Operating Officer of SouthernSun Asset Management. Eleanor is from Macon, GA. She attended Vanderbilt University, where she studied philosophy and piano. They are both active in their church, Redeemer Presbyterian, while serving on the boards of various non-profits in the Midtown area, including The Brooks Museum (Eleanor) and GSL School (Bubba). They also enjoy participating as coaches and fans of their kids’ extracurricular activities, as well as engaging with other GSL parents on a regular basis.

Nicki Soulé and Andy Nix are the parents of GSL seventh graders Gray and Mary Gara Nix. They live in High Point Terrace with their canine children, Elmo and Clementine. Andy was reared in Richmond, VA and Little Rock, AR and holds an undergraduate degree from Rhodes College and an MBA from the University of Memphis. He is a principal in the consulting firm PeopleCap. Nicki is from Meridian, MS and is a graduate of Rhodes College and the University of Memphis School of Law. She works in the alumni and development office at Rhodes. Both Nicki and Andy are active in the Grace-St. Luke’s Church and school communities.

Cindy & Kevin Brewer and Kelley & Matt Morice, aka “The Brewices,” led the GSL community in raising $255,751.78 in unrestricted donations during the 2014-2015 “Surprisingly Real” annual giving campaign. This was well over the $230,000 goal. Combine it with restricted gifts of $51,909.61, and this year’s annual fund generated a grand total of $307,661.39! Considering their enthusiasm, spirit of fun, and total commitment to the fundraising process, their success was really no surprise at all.

The community that is GSL Episcopal School values its own distinctive culture: its sense of extended family, its place in Midtown, its relationship with the church, its partnership with teachers, and its many friendships. It is this sense of purpose, belonging, and commitment that leads so many to support the Annual Fund. Consequently, it was no surprise that nearly 70% of GSL’s parents contributed to the 2014-2015 Annual Fund. It’s important to note that grandparents are also a significant part of GSL’s Annual Fund. Contributions from grandparents totaled $61,711 this year – 24% of our total dollars raised. GSL continues to be one the Memphis area’s most accomplished schools, providing its students with a foundation – an anchor – for life. The school’s achievements, however, are made possible primarily because of its people – its faculty and staff, of course, but mostly because of its families and its parental leadership. Thank you for your support – with an extra hearty thanks for the not-so-surprising vision and energetic leadership of our Annual Fund chairs: Cindy & Kevin, and Kelley & Matt!

THANKS TO OUR PARENTS ASSOCIATION We must also give extra credit to our hardworking Parents’ Association (P.A.) for another fabulous fundraising year. Under the expert leadership of P.A. President Carol Seamons (mom of Caroline, 8th grade, and Ryan, class of ’14), volunteers worked tirelessly all year to organize and host special events for students, faculty, and families – and to raise money for GSL’s Teacher Wish Lists.

THE P.A.’S CONTRIBUTIONS TO GSL FOR 2014-2015 INCLUDE: $63,000 contributed to Teacher Wish List items $11,400 contributed to new furniture for two classrooms $10,000 contributed to a special Professional Development Fund $5,000 contributed toward security enhancements $4,270 annual contribution to the GSL Endowment $3,900 for GSL shade tents for use in ASC and Athletics $1,600 contributed for playground items, Spanish, Library, and Theatre The GSL Alumni Association also enjoyed a memorable year, chaired (again) by Billy Schaffer ’84, father of Bella ’15 and Avery ’17. The relatively new Alumni Corner was installed during his watch, and it continues to grow as commemorative plaques are added every year following graduation.

THE P.A. CONNECTION It’s hard to believe that we are nearing the end of the First Trimester of the 2015-2016 school year. Like everything else on the GSL campus, the Parents Association has been busy these first few months of school. I am hopeful that you have been able to participate in one of our many P.A. activities and that you have been able to find a volunteer opportunity that appeals to you to assist us in our endeavors to give back to GSL. Last year, through P.A. fundraising activities, we provided funding in the following areas:
• $63,000 contributed to Teacher Wish List items • $11,400 contributed to new furniture for two classrooms • $10,000 contributed to a special Professional Development Fund
• $5,000 contributed toward security enhancements • $4,270 annual contribution to the GSL Endowment • $3,900 for GSL shade tents for use in ASC and Athletics • $1,600 contributed for playground items, Spanish, Library, and Theatre Your participation in P.A. events is vitally important to ensure that we have the ability to cover these “extras” year after year. To date, we’ve coordinated the effort for student school supplies and have completed our fall wrapping paper sale (online ordering is available throughout the year). Our lower school families have enjoyed the Book Swap and Family Reading Night, and we are looking forward to the fall Teacher Appreciation event as a way to say ‘thank you’ for all that they do. The Book Fair at The Booksellers is also right around the corner and is always a great family event for all ages. Additionally, please be sure to SAVE THE DATE for the ANCHOR AUCTION, which will be held on Friday, April 15th at the University Club of Memphis. THE EIGHTH GRADE GRADUATE The Portrait of a Graduate shows the future for a GSL graduate. The Portrait of a Graduate is the toolkit needed for whatever adventures lie ahead. For those of us who know and love GSL, it’s something that we are very proud of; it quantifies the essence of what it means to graduate from GSL. As the Head of Middle School, I have the good fortune of seeing students develop from fifth grade through eighth grade, a time that arguably is as developmentally relevant as the dawn of life. No one who starts fifth grade as a precocious 10 year-old is the same as they are upon graduation as a maturing 14 year-old. In a nutshell, those four years are filled with a tremendous amount of physical, emotional, and academic growth. The GSL experience provides students with impressive tools to continue developing in high school, college, and beyond. Through the Portrait of a Graduate, we have a clear understanding in what tools GSL graduates have for their next phase in life. Take for example these three traits from the Portrait of a Graduate:
LUKERS ARE INQUISITIVE.
They finish eighth grade with a love of learning that is far stronger than simply being labeled as smart. Being inquisitive means asking the big questions, having positive interactions with teachers, and recognizing that intelligence is relative and the quest for knowledge never stops. GSL graduates finish

eighth grade with important academic information, but it’s the love of learning fostered through Miss Lee’s, Lower School, and Middle School that will endure.
LUKERS ARE CONFIDENT.
They’ve grown up in a nurturing environment where they are taught to recognize that their potential is vast and that they can, and will, play a role in making the world a better place. This is a not a self-assured confidence, but a belief in their sense of self and a recognition that nothing is out of reach with the right amount of effort, commitment, and grit.
LUKERS ARE LEADERS.
It’s hard to quantify, but the value of being the oldest and wisest students as seventh and eighth graders is incredibly powerful. Instead of looking up to the juniors and seniors as leaders, our seventh and eighth graders take on important student leadership roles themselves, and serve as role models for our younger students. Consequently, our graduates arrive at High School ready to take on leadership roles immediately. It’s no surprise then that our graduates are coveted by area High Schools. Talk to any Upper School Head from a school where our graduates have attended, and he or she will tell you that Lukers are easily recognizable as ninth graders with a positive attitude, strong character, and commitment to making a difference in their school community.
Seventh and eighth graders are the leaders of the GSL community. When students run for student council positions, they take the weeklong campaign season seriously. Fostering the environment of confident leaders is a key part of the Middle School experience at GSL.

NEW SAINTS ON STAFF CYNTHIA BURNETT Education: BS in Early Childhood Ed from Kennesaw State University, M.Ed – Indiana Wesleyan University Hometown: Believe it or not Memphis born and raised/ Atlanta last 35 years (how can that be I’m only 40 yrs. old LOL) Family: My son Timothy, 23 years old, lives in Georgia. My mother lives here in Southaven and is extremely glad I’m home. First job: I worked at Lowensteins Department store (Memphians will remember), I was a dressing room clerk ( most boring job EVER!) I made $2.30 an hour. Favorite childhood book: Childcraft book of poetry- Purple Cow was one of my favorites. Ask me, I can recite it to this day! Poetry is still one of my favorite genres. Favorite school subject: Environmental Science- I loved finding out how the world works and how we affect it. Watch out for disappearing frogs/amphibians, which is a sure sign of an unhealthy environment. Favorite pastime: I love to flea market and antique shop. Searching for those unique, eclectic and interesting pieces is fun and relaxing. Favorite movie: Being an old movie buff, I love watching the oldies! The Nun Story with Audrey Hepburn and any Bette Davis movie. Favorite music: Jazz and Neo-Soul (A blending of the old/ traditional Soul with contemporary RB with a jazzy flair). Favorite GSL moment: Getting to know the children at Miss Lee’s has been a blast. Since reading to the classes, I now have one student who will yell “Pete the Cat” every time he sees me. It makes me smile!

REACHING POTENTIAL
Liz Awsumb, Jeanette Walton, and Cynthia Burnett attended the Tennessee Association for the Education of Young Children Conference in September, with this year’s focus on reaching potential, where they learned about creating natural outdoor learning environments. Kimberly White was named a liaison to the Tennessee Association of Independent Schools (TAIS), and joined the Elevating and Celebrating Effective Teachers and Teaching forum this fall.

This year, the middle school cross-country team is the largest it has ever been, with over 50 runners. The boys and girls teams had many impressive runs, with several first- and second-place finishes.

SERVICE LEARNING Before school started, faculty and staff spent the morning on their first full day of in-service serving the Memphis community. Service learning is a major focus for the 2015-2016-school year, and what better way to teach the importance of giving back to the community than to serve the community firsthand. Faculty and staff volunteered at MIFA, The Target House, Le Bonheur, The Parkview, and at the Carpenter Art Garden.
