HEAD OF SCHOOL Those of you who have known me from my days as Head of Middle School here at GSL know of my long-standing interest in character development as a key element of education. I firmly believe that one of the most important things we do here as parents and educators at Grace-St. Luke’s is character development. Our mission includes equipping our children not only with the academic skills they need to succeed in high school, college, and the work force, but also the wherewithal to overcome adversity and the various challenges life will throw at them. Our journey with this began with Traits for Success many years ago, but it has evolved into something very exciting. For many years, GSL has been part of a group of PK-8th grade independent schools across the country, exchanging ideas and best practices in a number of different areas. This group, now known as INDEX, shares information across a wide range of fields. While the schools in this group were excited about sharing data to find best practices, there was also a hunger to do more. Out of that desire, a collaboration began that led to the creation of the Mission Skills Assessment (MSA). The MSA is a unique and groundbreaking attempt to measure and quantify something that is often talked about anecdotally: character. As the schools began to collaborate on this project, they examined their mission statements and found some common values or themes each school was trying to develop. These included teamwork, creativity, ethics, resilience, curiosity, and time management. At the same time, there was a great deal of promising research from Carol Dweck, Angela Duckworth, and others that indicates raw talent alone may not be the determining factor in life success. In fact, research suggests that non-cognitive skills such as the ones listed above better predict student success in school than raw academic talent. Of all the non-cognitive skills the MSA evaluates, my favorite is resilience, or as I like to call it, grit. This is a term that every Memphis Grizzlies fan is familiar with, and readily observable in sports at GSL as well. I can clearly recall a GSL girls’ basketball team in a playoff game down to four players with only a few seconds left in regulation, finding a way to force overtime. In years past, we also had countless GSL football teams that toiled mightily to advance the ball down the field, let alone win games.
At our recent alumni reunion, several former students came and spoke to me about the lessons they learned from those teams and those experiences: Keep trying, never give up, and always do your best. In short, they had to learn grit. What’s exciting about our participation in the MSA is that the data we glean will help us be more intentional about how we teach grit. A faculty committee is now in place to investigate this more thoroughly so that we can help our children learn these non-cognitive skills. The value of a GSL education lies not only in the excellent academic preparation, but also in the development of character and grit that make life success possible. Sincerely,

MISS LEE’S MARKS 90 YEARS IN MEMPHIS BY MARCI WOODMANSEE ’83, DIRECTOR OF COMMUNICATIONS
Ninety years ago, in 1924, a young Memphis teacher named Eva Lee founded Miss Lee’s School of Childhood in her home, offering classes to children in kindergarten through grade six. Miss Lee developed a strong curriculum that od, Lee’s School of Childho included an emphasis on The rhythm band at Miss mid-1940s. foreign language, as well as instruction that included ballet, piano, art, and a rhythm band. She also believed in the importance of good manners. She and her graduating students were often seen having lunch at the Peabody following commencement. Before her death, Eva Lee willed Miss Lee’s School of Childhood to her niece, Eva May Atwood. After Atwood’s death in 1985, it was bequeathed to Roberta Ackerman, who closed the school at the end of graduation exercises on May 26, 1986 and offered it for sale. GSL acquired the property and immediately set to work renovating the building to become its new preschool campus the following year. The Commercial Appeal ran this article July 20, 1986, on the changeover: Grace-St. Luke’s Episcopal Church purchased the rambling frame house at 1760 Peabody yesterday and hopes to house its private school prekindergarten program there, according to Bill Denman, president of the church’s school board. “We do plan to keep the fine tradition of Miss Lee’s alive,” said Denman. “Miss Lee’s had a long and glorious history of educating a great number of Memphis people over the years. We want to keep it pretty much as is.” The reopening in January 1987, GSL’s 40th anniversary year, allowed the school to expand its relatively new prekindergarten program, which was in critical need of more space. Fast-forward to today and by all accounts, the historic 90-year-old Preschool is looking very good! Thanks to a series of expansions, most recently this summer, the school now offers nine total classrooms (three Little Luker, four PreKindergarten, and two Junior Kindergarten) plus offices and a multipurpose room. But much like the Miss Lee’s of old, the charming old building remains a happy, welcoming center of learning. Miss Lee’s will experience other changes going forward as Head of Preschool Jennifer Vest announced her resignation at the end of this year to finish work on her doctoral degree at Vanderbilt University. She has ably guided Miss Lee’s through several NAEYC accreditations in her six years at GSL, and a search is underway now for her successor. The next Head of Preschool will assume leadership of an outstanding institution with a long, rich history of success in early childhood education. We look forward to celebrating Miss Lee’s 100th!
Remembering Miss Lee’s
Gay Apfel Glassman got quite a surprise last summer during a visit to Memphis with her son’s family. Her daughter-in-law Kristy was driving her around Midtown when Glassman noticed the school she had attended years ago when she was growing up in Memphis, Miss Lee’s School of Childhood. “I said, ‘That’s still there? I went there! That’s my school!’ ” says Glassman. Then her daughter-in-law told her it was the school they had picked for their children to begin attending this fall. A native Memphian, Glassman grew up near Hein Park in the 1940s. Her father owned a millinery shop at 3 South Main Street, and her mother stayed at home with Gay and her older sister Wendy. The girls were both enrolled at Miss Lee’s, with Gay attending from about 1945-1949 (see photo at left; Gay is playing the spoons in the front row). “A cab picked us up every day to take us to school, and then, Miss Lee’s was really just a little one-room school house,” Glassman says. “I remember learning French. There was a long table with objects on it that we all stood around, and we had to learn the French word for each item. They also taught us how to write in cursive. And I especially remember playing in the band. I guess that was part of our recreation; we all sat outside in chairs with a variety of instruments, wearing yellow capes and white sailor caps.” After Miss Lee’s, Glassman went on to Springdale, Snowden, and Central High School, graduating from there in 1959. She moved to Jackson, Tennessee for a time with her husband and sons, but eventually ended up relocating to Florida and entering the real estate business. Her oldest son Hal grew up in Jackson but recently moved to Memphis from Anchorage, Alaska with FedEx. He and Kristy enrolled sons Zane (PK) and Max (LL) at Miss Lee’s this year. “When I saw Miss Lee’s for the first time again after so many years, I just could not believe that the school was still there and that my grandsons would be going there,” says Glassman. “Such wonderful memories!” “We are so happy to have the Zane, Gay, and Max Glassman boys attending Miss Lee’s,” adds Hal. “I never would have guessed that they would end up in the same little school that my mother attended 65 years ago!”

SO LONG, FAREWELL
On Episcopal School Sunday we said goodbye to Father Joseph WallaceWilliams, who has served the church and school with incredible love and enthusiasm for the past two years. Father Joseph has joined the Order of the Holy Cross in the Hudson Valley in New York, the Episcopal Church’s oldest religious order for men, to become a monk, a dream of his for some time. We wish him well!

SENIOR KINDERGARTNERS DISCOVER FUN IN LEARNING
Special weekly program gives students extra time to explore fascinating topics.

If you notice a special hum of excitement in the Senior Kindergarten hallway on Thursdays, chances are three sections of 44 bright young minds are about to begin their weekly Discovery Time program. Implemented some 15 years ago at GSL, Discovery Time was a kindergarten teacher invention designed to carve out a block of time during the week for students to do some handson, experiential exploration of certain concepts or topics. Led today by five veteran teachers (one of whom, Libby Shannon, has been at GSL for 30 years), plus one innovative newcomer, Discovery Time is special because of its structure. Shannon and Cindy Sorrells, long-time teachers in the Crazy Critters room, along with partners Jill Beaumont and Nicole Murphey in the Dynamic Dolphins room and Jeremie Upshaw and Renee Norris in the Rockin’ Robins room know how to make it fun. For an hour and a half, the three sections of students will rotate through three stations (visiting each classroom for 30 minutes) to explore a special topic. One section will have a reading/language arts component, one section will have a math component, and one will touch on social studies or science. “Every Thursday as we get close to 9:45 am, the kids start to get excited,” says Shannon. “It took us a few years to figure out how to get it to the right length at 30 minutes per classroom. National Geographic’s Young Explorer magazine, which generally contains three basic stories, has been a great source of inspiration for us. We often use that as a foundation, and make up our own activities.” The extra fun, for both the teachers and the students, is that the children get to rotate out of their regular classroom and into the other sections. This way, every teacher gets to know every senior kindergarten student throughout the year, and vice versa. “It’s good for the kids to explore each classroom, plus we get to meet everybody,” says Shannon. “The students know this time is special!”

The program’s success is due in large part to the seemingly boundless creativity of the entire kindergarten team. The teachers have a great rapport and the innovative spirit needed to consistently come up with fun new activities every week. Sometimes the three lessons have a common theme, though not always. Recently, during a week when the kids were studying the letter M, the teachers decided to plan a Discovery Time on magnets. Another week, the theme was pirates. This included getting to wear PJs (and studying other things that started with the letter P), and going outside on a treasure hunt. “The thing that’s great and different about Discovery is the extra time. You couldn’t keep your group of kids in one room, focused on this many things, for a whole hour and a half,” explains Jill Beaumont. “But the rotation allows us to keep them focused while changing it up enough to make everything fun.” “It also continually pushes us to find new things to do with the kids,” says Cindy Sorrells. “And it’s distinct from our teaching during the rest of the day because of the extra time,” adds Renee Norris. “We like to brainstorm! Going outside to do things with nature, like a tree walk, for example, is always fun. That can be a good way to weave in measuring and estimating, or other fun science experiments.” As Murphey explains, the extra time is the key. “It allows you to do somewhat old-fashioned, whole language lessons, where you read a story and have a whole activity that goes with it. Normal teaching blocks during the kindergarten day are short. Discovery Time allows us more of a thematic way to approach things. I think we all like the change of schedule, too.”

DOES IT ALWAYS WORK?
“Every year there are times in our planning when we think, ‘Maybe this particular activity is not going to work!’” says Shannon. “But it almost always does.” “Sometimes we come up with something that we think could turn out a little hokey, but the children end up loving it,” Murphey explains. “Or the opposite can happen! We go all out with something, and the kids are like ‘Eh…’ ” “Libby and I tried making ice cream once,” adds Cindy Sorrells. “Salt went everywhere!” “Basically we are all just trying to keep up with Libby Shannon,” says Jeremie Upshaw with a smile. Whether or not Shannon’s pace is the reason, Discovery Time is always kicked up one notch further when it falls near a special occasion such as a holiday or Dr. Seuss Day or the 100th day of school. At these times, the teachers add an extra classroom activity plus independent activities in the senior kindergarten hallway, for a total of eight project stations instead of just three activities. “We love holidays!” says Jill Beaumont. “Those Discovery Times are a little different, because we will generally start in one room together, then give the students some free choice to go to any activities they want within the hour and a half.”

“The kids want to come in every room, but then they also go through the activities in the hallway and enjoy some independent choice,” adds Upshaw. “For instance, at Christmas there are different stations to make ornaments, and they can go around to visit them all. It’s so much fun.” The teachers agree that Discovery Time has evolved into an especially creative part of kindergarten that is unique to GSL. “I really have not seen this type of program at other schools,” says Murphey. “Like so many other fun things we do here, such as our monthly sewing projects, weekly math tubs, and art history workshops, it’s one of those things that I believe makes us stand out.” “It’s a truly engaging way for students to participate in handson activities,” says Upshaw. “It keeps us on our toes because we have to think of new stuff all the time!” adds Shannon. Clearly, the combination of teacher enthusiasm and student curiosity is the primary reason Discovery Time has become a beloved component of the kindergarten curriculum. “When I tell the kids it’s Thursday and ask, ‘What are we doing today?’ they all shout, ‘Discovery!’,” Upshaw says. “They really love it!”

James Owen* is attending Oxford University in England. Emmett Montgomery graduated in May from Georgetown. He was awarded the Dobro Slovo Award in Russian Language, Literature and Culture, the Department of Slavic Languages’ highest honor. Graduating Summa Cum Laude, Emmett was in the top 5% of Georgetown’s 2014 graduating class and was a Phi Beta Kappa. He is now living across the Potomac and working at PricewaterhouseCoopers as an associate in the firm’s public sector advisory group. Mitchell Thompson is an assistant football coach at Amherst College. Providence, Rhode Island hosted a mini GSL reunion in July when alumnus Will Taylor met Michael Dibbert (former GSL basketball coach and history teacher) for dinner. Will is now a graduate student at Brown, and Mr. Dibbert is the Dean of Students at the American School in Switzerland.
Sophie Stubblefield lives in San Francisco (until recently with fellow alumna Hannah Shapiro) and works for Engine, which sent her to Memphis to do a video and story about the local start-up community in Memphis. Alex Boggs is the general manager of the newly reborn Lafayette’s Music Room, a well-known music venue from the ‘70s that reopened in its original location in Overton Square in early October. Louise Smythe was the featured commencement speaker at Hutchison School’s graduation services in May. Currently working at Pixar as a storyboard artist, Louise was featured as the Anchor cover story in Spring 2013.

Matthew Whittington will marry his fiancé Bethany in April. They both graduate from Georgia’s Columbia Theological Seminary in May 2015. Marshall Bartlett (Dartmouth ’11) recently launched Home Place Pastures, a sustainable pasture pork operation on his family’s farm in Como. Home Place pork is now being offered at restaurants in Memphis and Oxford and at the Downtown Farmers Market.

Matthew McIntosh was featured in the December 2013 issue of Canoe and Kayak detailing a recent 80-mile canoe trip on the Buffalo River in Arkansas. Cole Ettinghoff* graduated from MUS in May and received the Scott Miller Rembert Senior Service Award for unselfish service to the school. He also received the Religion Award. Will McGee traveled as back-up musician with entertainer Alex Boye all summer.

Margaret Grace Haltom received a Jefferson Scholarship to the University of Virginia. Jefferson Scholars are nominated by their high school and complete an extremely rigorous selection process in pursuit of this prestigious award, which covers full tuition plus supplemental enrichment experiences.
Doug McClew graduated from MUS in May and received the Brescia Award for Unselfish Service in Dramatics. Martha Upton, Mallory Prater, Mary Allison Pritchard, Bailey Archey, Abby Huber, Molly Hanna, Kelsie Jones, and Nicole Mansour graduated from St. Mary’s School in May. Molly Hanna was named Honor Student for ranking third in the senior class. Abby Huber received the Sumner Baker Athletic Award for leadership in athletics as well as the Spirit of St. Mary’s award. Anna Harwood received the Ideal Hutchison Girl award at Hutchison graduation in May. Jacob Mabray, Maverick Kohlhof, and Reynolds Raiford visited GSL before heading off to college in August. Katie Ayres won an Episcopal Church Women of West TN college scholarship for academic excellence and involvement in the life of the church. Katie graduated Summa Cum Laude from St. Agnes. Sally Clark won a Hutchison book award at the school yearend award ceremonies.

Carter Stovall was named to the Hutchison Peer Council. Francie Sentilles was named to the Crest Society and is on the Honor Council at Hutchison. Riggs Markham was recognized as one of the top 10 overall Latin students in Tennessee at the state Latin Convention in May. Molly McGehee, a sophomore at Lausanne, performed last February with Lausanne’s Chorus in a one-night-only revival of Titanic at New York’s Lincoln Center. In April, she danced in New Ballet Ensemble’s production of Springloaded: Coppelia ReMix. She was recently inducted into the Lausanne chapter of Tri-M Music Honor Society and performed this fall in New Ballet’s Freefall.

Connor Anderson won second place in the Spirit of Giving Award Youth Category during the Volunteer Mid-South awards luncheon this spring. Connor has served with GSLVBS, Church of the Holy Spirit-VBS, St. Columba Camp, and BSA Troop 34. David Rhea was one of 30 students selected nationally to study acting this summer in New York with the Stella Adler Studio. Emma Pounders got the lead female role as Gertrude in St. George’s production of Seussical, on stage in November. *Students are listed according to their last year of attendance. First, a few facts… FUND OR CAMPAIGN?
The Annual Fund is sometimes referred to as the Annual Giving Campaign. They are the same thing.
WHY DO WE NEED IT?
The Annual Fund pays for important items not covered by tuition. It enables GSL to keep the classrooms smaller, to hire talented teachers, to provide greater academic resources, and much more. Specifically, this includes (but is not limited to):
• The installation of new HVAC units - five were bought last year.
• The ongoing purchase of new technology - like the 41 new iPads acquired last year.
• Support of financial aid. • The addition of the Alumni Corner and commemorative plaques to honor GSL’s alumni, faculty, and families.
• The construction of a new Little Luker classroom at DO OTHER INDEPENDENT SCHOOLS HAVE ANNUAL FUNDS (A.K.A. ANNUAL GIVING CAMPAIGNS)?
The GSL Development Department (Denise DuBois Taylor and Sherry Emerson) work with volunteer parent chairs to raise funds each year. The day-to-day management of the dollars raised is the responsibility of John Adrian, GSL’s Director of Finance & Operations, under the guidance of our Head of School Thor Kvande and the Board of Trustees.

The launch of the 2014-15 “Surprisingly Real!” Annual Fund drive this fall brought with it a new tag line (And that just happened…) and some new energy, thanks to our indomitable co-chairs, Cindy and Kevin Brewer and Kelley and Matt Morice. With their extensive event and marketing expertise, our co-chairs decided to inject some excitement into this year’s campaign by adding a weekly “donor winner” announcement as pledges have come in. In other words, any donors who give or pledge between now and December 30 are eligible to be selected as prize winners. These fun surprises are delivered to the winners and have ranged from impromptu cornhole games, to prepared dinners, to gift cards and yard signs. We even gathered some weekly winners on campus for a morning breakfast in the carpool line! Needless to say, the surprises have generated lots of excitement and, hopefully, helped convey GSL’s great appreciation for everyone who has given to the campaign to date! We are extremely grateful to our campaign chairs for creating such a great campaign! Remember: all pledges received each week are eligible to win a real surprise-of-a-prize. MEET THE CHAIRS Cindy and Kevin Brewer love Memphis. As co-founders and principals of LEO Events, they market and sell Memphis to corporations looking to hold meetings and events in our city. A corporate meeting and event management firm, LEO Events produces some 300 events annually, domestically and internationally for companies like Exxon Mobil, Software AG, The Home Depot and more. LEO Events keeps Cindy and Kevin on the road quite a bit, but when asked to Co-Chair the Annual Fund this year, they eagerly accepted. They are the parents of Benjamin (third grade) and George (second grade).
Matt and Kelley Morice met some 30 years ago and decided to keep their roots planted firmly in Memphis after they married. Matt is co-owner of Cumberland Partners, a financial marketing firm, and is a chartered financial analyst. Kelley and fellow GSL parent Cynthia Saatkamp own Hemline Creative Marketing, a brand strategy firm downtown. Kelley is a graduate of the University of Memphis and an alumna of New Memphis Institute’s Leadership Development Intensive, and also serves on the Board of the Memphis Farmers Market. The Morices have a son Christopher (second grade) and trusty dog, Maximus.

A Very Good Year

We started the 2013-14 school year with 43 new Little Lukers, inaugural members of GSL’s two-year-old program. We ended the year by saying goodbye to 41 8th-graders who graduated, leaving their childhoods behind as they entered a new world of high school and beyond. Through it all, our young Saints discovered their inner talents and strengths as they navigated the halls of GSL. The community that is GSL Episcopal School values its distinctive culture: We treasure our sense of extended family, our place in Midtown, our relationship with the church, our partnership with teachers, and our many friendships. It is this sense of purpose, belonging, and commitment that leads so many to support the Annual Fund. Every year, families and friends of GSL dig deep into their pockets to support the school, filling the gap between tuition and the actual cost of educating each child. The 2013-2014 Annual Fund was no exception. Nearly 70% of GSL’s parents showed their support for the school, helping ensure that GSL continues to offer the best possible education and personal experience for their children and for future students. It’s important to note that grandparents are a significant part of GSL’s Annual Fund, too. Contributions from grandparents totaled $46,720! We must also give extra credit to our hardworking Parents’ Association (P.A.) for its record-breaking fundraising this past year. Under the expert leadership of P.A. President Betsy Hood (mom of Griffin, ’17 and Meredith, ’13), volunteers worked tirelessly all year to organize and host special events for students, faculty, and families. In the process, they raised a whopping $71,000 for Teacher Wish Lists. This sum included an all-time high $61,400 generated by the annual Anchor Auction, which was chaired by Wendy Smith (Ellie, ’18 & Mary Clara, ’21) and Jeni Linkous (Lilly, ’18 and Maggie, ’21). The GSL Alumni Association chaired by Billy Schaffer ’84, father of Bella, ’15 and Avery, ’17, also enjoyed a memorable year. Many Alumni Board members rolled up their sleeves to help ensure that this year’s Alumni Reunion was a huge success. It was! An estimated 350 people attended. Additionally, the new Alumni Corner remembrance wall was unveiled with some 108 commemorative plaques sold, which generated $24,800. The Alumni Corner is a permanent addition to the GSL campus and new plaques will be added every year. Our 2013-14 Annual Fund Chairs Virginia and Michael Rowland (parents of third-grader Charles and pictured at right) dove right into the annual giving campaign with focus and determination. The result? They led the GSL community to raise $263,813 in unrestricted donations. Combine this with restricted gifts of $27,000, and the 2013-14 Annual Fund raised a grand total of $290,813 – well over the $220,000 goal! Thank you, Virginia and Michael! The very foundation of GSL’s success is built on the loyalty, vision, and commitment of its families. Thank you all for your donations year-round, in terms of both your time and your treasure.

The Preschool/Lower School Book Swap, moved to a new time and location this fall in the Anchor Center, was a great success. Students loved swapping out old books for new things to read!
THE P.A. CONNECTION Like everything else on the GSL campus, the Parents’ Association has been busy these first few months of school! Hopefully you signed up to help with one of our activities or events at Back-to-School Night, or you purchased some great wrapping paper (our fall fundraiser), or your “Luker” is wearing his or her new favorite piece of Spirit Wear. The P.A. also hosted a fun Volunteer Luncheon for event chairs, and if you are new to GSL, I met you at new parent orientation. You may have already attended the Book Swap or helped with our fall teacher appreciation activities, and are now looking forward to the annual Book Fair at the Booksellers at Laurelwood. If you haven’t seen or experienced any of the above, don’t worry! There are many opportunities left this year to support our school and get involved (oh, and buy a piece of Spirit Wear)! One event you need to put on your calendar today is the Anchor Auction, which will be held on Friday, April 17 at the University Club of Memphis. This is the Parents’ Association’s largest fundraiser. The theme is A Night in the Big Apple, and it’s sure to be lots of fun. Proceeds from all of our events allow us to supplement the learning experience of our children through technology enhancements, physical plant improvements, and curricular gifts. Recently, I read thank-you notes from teachers for the many gifts that their classrooms received. Additionally, there were notes thanking the P.A. for Teacher Appreciation treats and activities and notes from families that received some “TLC” from the P.A. Those notes truly made me realize the daily impact the P.A. has on the GSL campus and the wonderful connectedness we have among our students, parents, faculty, and staff. Come be a part of it! STANFORD SCHOLARS
Middle School math teachers Kim Norris, Alisha Kimbro, Ellyse Woolard, and Lyn Forsyth took a Stanford University online class this summer called “How To Learn Math” by math education professor Jo Boaler. Course participants explored the new research ideas on mathematics learning and student mindsets that can transform students’ experiences with math. The interactive sessions included a variety of thinking tasks to promote active engagement, such as reflecting on videos, designing lessons, and discussing ideas with peers. “It was all about how to teach math in a way that gives students confidence in the subject and allows creative problem solving,” said Mrs. Woolard. “Very cool stuff!” According to Mrs. Forsyth: “It was one of the best courses I have ever taken.”
ARTISTIC ENDEAVORS
Paintings and etchings by Lower School art teacher Carol Buchman were exhibited in a solo show, Thunder and Lightning and Other Stories, at the Buckman Performing & Fine Arts Center this summer. Carol also recently completed a commission piece for the women’s foundation to honor Mary Shainberg. The piece was unveiled in September at Baptist Women’s Hospital’s new legacy gallery along with dozens of other artworks commissioned to honor outstanding women of Memphis.

GSL faculty members competed for the second time in the annual Duncan Williams Dragon Boat races on Mud Island this fall. Our team, the Mighty, Mighty Saints, greatly improved its time compared to last year. We ended up finishing 10th overall out of 32 teams and won the Non-Profit division! Congratulations, Saints! Non-profit division champions!
SUPERSTAR STUDENTS SPEEDY SWIMMING
Claire Epperson (7th grade) accomplished several swim goals this summer. In June in Louisville, Kentucky, she broke an Ohio Valley Championship meet record in the 400-meter freestyle. In July, she had six top-10 swims at the Southeastern Swimming (SES) Long Course Championships in Knoxville. SES is made up of 7,500 swimmers on 75 teams across Tennessee, Alabama and the Florida panhandle. At this event, she was one of eight 12-year-old girls selected to represent Southeastern Swimming in the weeklong USA Swimming Southern Zone Age Group Championships in San Antonio, Texas in August. At Zones, she had two top-10 times and earned a sixth place medal in the 400-meter freestyle.

The GSL community suffered a tremendous loss this year when the school’s Director of Facilities, Dennis Cain, passed away in August due to complications from a stroke. Dennis Cain was a beloved father, husband, family member, friend, and colleague. Born in Memphis, he graduated from Memphis Catholic High School in 1976 and studied mechanical engineering at the University of Memphis. He proudly served in the United States Army, both stateside and overseas, before being honorably discharged with military honors. He also served in the Army Reserves. He worked at GSL Church for some time before switching over to the school side of campus full time in 1998. Dennis (or Mr. Dennis, as he was known to many GSL students) spent countless hours, weekdays, and weekends working to ensure that the GSL campus was safe and welcoming for the entire community. His talent and wisdom were invaluable not only in the school’s day-to-day operations, but also in planning the development and implementation of major projects such as renovations at Miss Lee’s and the construction and opening of the Anchor Center.

She was known for her beautiful singing voice, compassionate heart, and irrepressible spirit. We will miss her dearly.
Dennis’s dedication to GSL was second to none. It was not unusual in the least to see his silver truck here at all hours, both early morning and late at night. With a knowledge of the campus that was wide-ranging and all-encompassing, he could do it all, whether the task required carpentry or plumbing or painting, or repairs to our HVAC. He was, quite simply, fantastic at his job. But as great as his expertise was, his friendship and incomparable sense of humor will be missed even more. His presence and energy always livened things up in a positive way, whether it was a faculty get-together, a staff meeting, or just a quick visit in the office conference room. We simply counted on him being here, always. GSL Church hosted a beautiful memorial service for Dennis on Saturday, August 30. Head of School Thor Kvande and former headmaster Tom Beazley both spoke. Pastor Brian Henderson of Parkway Gardens United Presbyterian Church offered the Prayer & Words of Comfort, and GSL Church Rector Richard Lawson gave the closing eulogy. “In my experience, Dennis was someone who moved gracefully between different worlds: church and school, young and old, black and white, the haves and the havenots, newcomers and old timers,” said Lawson. “In moving so gracefully between different worlds, what he taught us is that there is only one world, God’s.” Dennis is survived by his wife, Lesa, and his daughters, Carla and Lauren. He will be dearly missed by all. As a permanent tribute to his work, the Dennis Cain Facilities Endowment was established this fall for those who want to honor his legacy and express appreciation for his innumerable contributions to GSL.

GSL ALUMNI FAMILIES At GSL, the alumni relationship regularly comes full circle when alumni grow up, become parents, and bring their own children back to school at GSL!
