Here at Grace-St. Luke’s Episcopal School, we are always mindful of our role in preparing students for not only high school, but college and beyond. We believe that nurturing the development of specific traits and skills will better equip students for lifelong success in a wide range of endeavors. To that end, each year, we identify a trait or skill that we emphasize over the course of the school year. This year, our focus is on teamwork.

In our world today, teamwork and the ability to collaborate are essential in work, school, and life. Having a group of people work together does not in itself a team make; team development requires careful thought and planning. In this issue of The Anchor, you will see stories and vignettes from each area of GSL - Preschool, Lower School, and Middle School that demonstrate not only our rich academic programs, but also the development of the whole child.

BOARD PRESIDENT Dear GSL Families, Friends and Alumni, As I begin my fifth year serving on the Board of Trustees and my second as president (and 11th year as a GSL parent), I can still say that I regularly find things about GSL that inspire my wonder and amazement. The dedication of the faculty and administration to our students is immeasurable. The commitment by board members and volunteers to serving the school is unparalleled. Our students and alumni are engaged as creative problem solvers, confident lifelong learners and responsible citizens in their communities and the world. I feel so incredibly fortunate to be a part of GSL. The theme for the school year is teamwork, and we have a wonderful team in the Board of Trustees. The Board at GSL supports our Head of School in fulfilling our mission. Our strategic plan is foremost in our minds in all we do. Last year, we collaborated with GSL’s Church and Scouting groups to move forward on converting the Doan house to a Scouting Lodge. We also reviewed our athletic offerings and have introduced a soccer program. This year, we will continue the work of assessing our campus facilities and working with administration to prioritize projects. As always, we are careful stewards of your financial investment at GSL. This year finds me in a very unexpected place as a parent and board president. My children, Stephen and Frances, are in the class of 2017. I will hand them their diplomas in May. When we started in Pre-K, graduation felt impossibly far away. It is hard to believe that my kids will present their 8th grade speeches and complete their internships. This fall, my family is busy visiting high schools and filling out applications. Our 8th graders are well prepared for high school and the challenges ahead. My kids are excited about the future, and so am I. It is, however, also very bittersweet to leave this wonderful place that has been – and always will be – our Anchor for Life. I am proud that my kids are Lukers for Life.

the preschool outdoor classroom TEAMWORK AND DEDICATION PUT PRESCHOOL If you ask four year olds how they feel about dirt, water, and playing outdoors, most will squeal with excitement.

STUDENTS IN TOUCH WITH NATURE

That’s exactly what happened as the JK Lucky Leapfrogs explored the Preschool Outdoor Classroom for the first time.

Conceptualized by Preschool Head Cynthia Burnett during her job interview in 2014, this incredible project came to life this Fall thanks to GSL’s dedicated community.

How The Outdoor Classroom Evolved The evolution of The Outdoor Classroom took a great deal of teamwork and is open today thanks to the hard work and effort of the Preschool teachers.

“JK (Lucky Leapfrogs) Assistant Teacher Jeanette Walton was instrumental in securing a donation from the Parents’ Association, enabling us to purchase the water table, sand toys, and so much more,” exclaimed Burnett. “Ms. Walton also led many conversations about what activities should be included in this unique classroom.”

As the outdoor space started to take shape, something happened that told the Preschool team that this project was, without a doubt, meant to be.

“As families toured Miss Lee’s, we would share our vision for an outdoor classroom,” said Burnett. “During one of these tours, the parents of Little Lukers student Jovie Walker said they had a mud kitchen that they were looking to donate and offered it to GSL.” According to Burnett, the Walkers even went a step further, cleaning and installing the mud kitchen for the Preschool.

“I still get chills when I think of how this all came together.”

BENEFIts of The Outdoor Classroom Beyond the safe, outdoor space for students to explore, The Outdoor Classroom provides endless opportunities for children to experience nature and initiate their own learning experiences, supporting their own interests and changing needs as they develop and grow.

“Research has proven that it is critical for children to connect with nature,” said Burnett. “The very act of playing with elements of nature helps a child develop critical physical, cognitive, and noncognitive skills. Our Preschool teachers have always focused on helping young children develop these skills, but now we have natural, tangible resources to enhance the experience for students, right in our backyard. How cool is that?!”

Students show off their inner artist as they draw selfportraits each month. They’re always excited to create with a new medium, be it glitter, markers, or chalk.

In October, students drew their self-portraits in Halloween costumes!

3rd Grade Reading Buddies

Hands-On Fun: Discovery Time

A favorite among students and teachers alike, Discovery Time allows students to have hands-on, experiential exploration of certain concepts or topics. Once a week, students visit all three classrooms to learn about math, language arts, and science/social studies.

Sight Word Review

Every SK student is assigned a 3rd grade buddy, who reads to the student during dedicated reading time each week. The 3rd graders have a great opportunity to develop their leadership skills, while passing on a love of reading to the SK students. In return, the SK students learn from these role models and feel special having older students to call friends.

As students read a passage with the teacher, they help identify sight words.

The multisensory approach of teaching students how to spell the word in sign language helps keep students focused on each letter in each word.

MIDDLE SCHOOL

GSL HONOR SOCIETY MEMBERS MAKE A DIFFERENCE At first glance, the group of 8th grade students eating lunch appeared to be a typical, energetic bunch talking and laughing as teenagers do.

But dig a little deeper, and you will find that this is a group of young leaders who want to make a difference.

And they are doing just that.

Without question, being eligible for induction into Grace-St. Luke’s Honor Society is no easy feat. In fact, GSL’s standards are higher than those of the National Junior Honor Society.

In addition to academic excellence, students must exemplify strong character traits. This accomplishment is one that high schools take into consideration during enrollment.

“To be honest, it looks great on high school applications,” said Griffin Hood. “This Society truly shows our meritorious achievement.”

But this year, these eight students want it to represent so much more.

“Early on, we decided that we want to have an impact on GSL,” Hood said.

In the past, the Honor Society got started on projects in October, beginning with the Ronald McDonald Pop Tab collection project. But this group wanted to get started earlier in the school year.

This year’s Honor Society is made up of eight 8th grade students.

“We didn’t want to wait until October for the Pop Tab project,” said Maxine Engel. “We wanted to make an impact right away.”

At the same time, GSL administrators were looking for a group to take ownership of the recycling program at GSL. That’s when these Honor Society members stepped in and took charge. Twice a week, these eight students collect recycling bins all over campus.

“Now that we’ve gotten here, we don’t want to sit and be idle,” said Grace Garrett. “We don’t want this group to just be about our grades.”

Sophie Mansour couldn’t agree more.

“I think we are role models for the school,” she said. “We want to show students in grades below us that we are enjoying ourselves. We are proud to be in the Honor Society and want to set the precedent that the GSL Honor Society is a big deal… that it’s important and fun.”

Since August, the group has been brainstorming ways to expand their impact even further.

“They’ve talked about peer tutoring with other grades,” said Ellen Hendry, Middle School Dean and sponsor of this group.

“That would spread their impact into the Lower School. I am continuously impressed with the vision of these young minds.

They are such an inspiration.”

raising awareness One of their top priorities this year is to educate students about the many benefits that come from being a member of the Honor Society, such as managing and creating meaningful projects, helping other students with exam prep, and developing great friendships.

“One of our goals for the year is to make students aware of what the Honor Society is and what (members) do,” said Frances Cates. “We do recycling and pop tabs, and we are trying to organize a book drive for Promise Academy. But we also want students to know about the other benefits.”

During one of their many conversations about their own personal journeys towards being inducted, they decided to make a plan to raise awareness of what it takes to earn a spot in GSL’s Honor Society.

“I didn’t know much about (GSL’s Honor Society) before, but last year I realized I wanted to be in it,” said Madeleine Hays.

“If we show younger students how fun it is and how much of a difference this group can make, maybe that will inspire them to work hard and strive to become a member.”

This group takes this awareness seriously, outlining a plan to begin educating students as early as 6th grade, when many of them recall first hearing about the Honor Society.

“You have to really set goals,” said Reese McMullen. “When I saw the inductions in 6th grade, I was inspired. I remember saying to myself at that moment, ‘I really want to do that. I really want that to be me next year.’”

That gave him the incentive needed to study hard in 7th grade, so that after the first two trimesters, he could be eligible for the Honor Society.

“It really helped me focus on working hard and reaching that goal so that I could participate in all of the fun Honor Society projects my entire 8th grade year,” McMullen said.

“That really helped us last year,” said Elliott Wilson. “Since it’s their first year taking exams, we want to help them know how to study, because that help from last year’s Society members had a big impact on us.”

In the end, these ambitious, dedicated students want to leave their mark and make a difference for GSL. “A lot of what we do is about citizenship in our community,” said Frances. “We are trying to bring that to life by really having a lasting impact on GSL.”

Joanne Rhodes, Valedictorian of GSL high school class of 1976, received the Briggs Excellence in Teaching Award in April. As an instructor in the Department of Physics and Materials Science at the University of Memphis, Rhodes was selected as one of the two recipients of this prestigious award. After earning a bachelor’s degree from Princeton in 2010, Will Taylor continued his studies to earn a master’s degree in physics from Brown University in May. He will remain at Brown to complete his doctorate while researching dark matter. He was recently inducted into the Sigma Xi Scientific Research Society (joining the ranks of roughly 200 Nobel Prize winners, including Albert Einstein).

Ann Burruss ‘98 and Will Prascher ‘01 were married on June 11 at Grace-St. Luke’s Episcopal Church.

The parents of the class of ’06 hosted a 10-year reunion this summer at the Rec Room in Memphis.

More than 20 of the 30-member class attended! In addition to celebrating the many accomplishments of these GSL alumni, one marriage and one engagement were announced!

Marshall Bartlett, William Payne, Austin Nauert, John Carr, and Justin Brooks descended upon Dallas in May to attend the wedding of their fellow GSL classmate, Dr. Ferrell Varner, Jr.

Ryan Turner married Catherine Clubb-Brown in August and is working as a software specialist at AutoZone.

In addition to singing and acting, NYC resident Katelyn Nichols is now working as an acting coach.

She has appeared in more than a dozen movies, television shows and off-Broadway plays. She has also worked in the casting department for Showtime’s hit series, Homeland.

Austin Magruder, a third generation architect, along with family members, purchased a 22-unit apartment building near the University of Memphis earlier this year. Calling the complex “Tiger Flats,” the family is joining the many redevelopment projects in this area.

The complex will provide well-appointed, sensible living spaces for students or others wanting to live near the University of Memphis campus.

Webb Emerson graduated from Mississippi State in May and earned the highest recognition offered to a senior in the Building Construction Science program: The Director’s Medallion. Selection criteria for this prestigious award include academic effort, participation, leadership abilities, strong moral character, and a concern with the sustainability of the program. The recipient must work diligently in the classroom, participate in BCS extracurricular activities, and be a role model to students.

Maggie James was accepted to a pre-med academic course for high school students at Georgetown University and attended this summer.

Brady McLaughlin and Owen Howell were awarded the Christian Brothers High School Frank Olita Achievement Award in May. They earned this award for scholarship in the study of Principles of Biomedical Science as well as for their outstanding performance on the PLTW End of Course Assessment.

Bralyn Horton was the only freshman to be inducted into the National Junior Honor Society at Catholic High School last school year. This summer, he was recognized as an outstanding camper at the Memphis Police Department’s Camp G.R.E.A.T. Now a sophomore at East High School, he is a member of Leadership Memphis in conjunction with East Elite, serves on the Student Council, plays on the basketball team, and is a member of The National Honor Society.

The GSL Alumni Association enjoyed a memorable year, chaired (again) by Billy Schaffer ’84, father of Bella ’15 and Avery ‘17. The Alumni Corner was installed during his watch, and it continues to grow as commemorative plaques are added to the brick wall every year following graduation. (Note: After four years at the helm, Mr. Schaffer has stepped aside for the new chair, Ann Burruss Prascher ’98.)

IN LOVING MEMORY OF GAIL LAWS

JK Assistant Teacher & Office Assistant, 1989-2016 Alumna Parent & Friend To All This summer, GSL suffered the loss of Gail Laws, a beloved friend, mother, teacher and co-worker. As the school community mourns her passing, we are blessed to have Gail’s daughter, Ariel Laws ‘03, beginning her career at GSL this year as a Little Lukers Assistant Teacher. Ariel shares the following touching words about Gail: My beautiful mother adopted me when I was 5 weeks old. One day, as I was looking at my baby book, I found a quote she had written that has stuck with me through this tough journey: “Life is a journey, you can be anything you set your mind to.

Dream big and know that I will always be proud of you.”

My mom’s passion was education. She inspired so many children, individuals and teachers at GSL these past 27 years.

I’m so happy that my mom got to see her last JK class graduate from GSL. Most of all, I am so proud to have her as my mother. She chose ME, believed in me, inspired me. She was such a phenomenal woman of God. She will always have the key to my heart.

There’s Nothing “New” About Their Commitment to GSL! Suzanne and Erick New are all about GSL. Their two sons Garner (6th grade) and Gregory (4th grade) have kept these Midtowners actively involved at the school for nearly a decade. In fact, if you have attended an Anchor Auction in recent years, then you’ve seen the creative contributions of Erick, coowner and director of operations of Garden District, a business that takes him all over the world. (Tulip shopping in Amsterdam, anyone?)

Suzanne, an alumna of Ole Miss with a graduate degree from the University of Memphis, keeps busy employing at least two different skill sets: she teaches English as a Second Language (ESL) for Shelby County Schools, and she is also a stylist at Stella & Dot, jewelry and accessories. In addition to these interests, both Suzanne and Erick are fully engaged members of Grace-St. Luke’s Episcopal Church.

What’s most impressive about the New family, at least for the purpose of this article, is their not-so-new commitment to GSL and the Annual Fund. Despite their diverse and busy schedules, they have always generously and enthusiastically found time to show their support of the school. Now they are stepping up to the plate again to lead the GSL community through another important fundraising campaign. They know first-hand that anyone – and everyone – can Make a Difference in the strength and success of GSL. Thank you, Suzanne & Erick – for all you do!

• The Annual Fund is the largest fundraiser of the school year.

(The Parents’ Association’s Anchor Auction is the second-largest money maker.)

• The Annual Fund is a supplemental source of income for the school. As with virtually all independent schools, tuition covers about 80% of GSL’s operating budget. The Annual Fund makes up the difference (roughly $2,500 per student).

• GSL is a not-for-profit business. Our mission is education. By design, high-quality schools are labor-intensive and peopleoriented. Where a for-profit company might consolidate employee duties and resources to save money, combining classrooms and reducing staff would not benefit our students.

Teachers are our most important asset, yet most of them earn less than their public school peers. They choose to work at GSL because they value its commitment to children. The majority of your donations help us to recruit and retain these highly-qualified instructors, to pay for their advanced education and training, and to purchase classroom technologies and enhancements. In other words, your contributions have a direct impact on the quality of each child’s experience while on campus.

• But that’s not all! While most of the Annual Fund goes directly to faculty support, contributions are also used for financial aid; facilities maintenance and improvements; for enhancements to the arts, the library, and other investments, as needed.

ANNUAL FUND BASIC Q & A Do other independent schools have annual funds?

Yes. They ALL do.

Who oversees the Annual Fund?

The GSL Development Department (Denise DuBois Taylor, Sherry Emerson, and Kate Shelton) works with the Annual Fund chairs and volunteers to raise money each year. Under the watchful eye of the Head of School and the Board of Trustees, the day-to-day management of the dollars raised falls into the capable hands of GSL’s Director of Finance, Daniel Fundo.

Does GSL have an endowment?

Yes. The school has a general Endowment which includes: The Anchor Fund – Providing long-term stability through a variety of investment opportunities.

The Dennis Cain Facilities Fund – For the maintenance of school buildings and grounds.

The Scholarship Fund – Providing need-based financial assistance to families of current or prospective students.

The Library Fund – Promoting and supporting the GSL School library.

The Technology Fund – Providing state-of-the-art technology to students and staff.

The Arts Fund – Promoting and supporting a variety of arts activities schoolwide.

Can a small gift make a difference?

Yes! Our school community is small, with fewer supporters than that of a major high school or college.

Because our donor base is limited, every gift counts!

THANKS TO LAST YEAR’S ANNUAL FUND CHAIRS FOR A BANNER YEAR Eleanor & Bubba Halliday alongside Nicki Soulé & Andy Nix led GSL supporters in raising $279,740.56 in unrestricted donations during the 2015-2016 annual fund drive, the highest total since the ’06-’07 prerecession campaign and nearly $50,000 more than the school’s $230,000 goal. Combine that with restricted gifts of $62,710.20, and this year’s annual fund generated a grand total of $342,450.76!

The community that is GSL Episcopal School values its own distinctive culture: its sense of extended family, place in Midtown, relationship with the church, partnership with teachers, and many friendships. It is this sense of purpose, belonging, and commitment that leads so many to support the Annual Fund. In fact, 71% of GSL’s parents contributed to the 2015-2016 Annual Fund.

It’s important to note that grandparents are also significant contributors to GSL’s Annual Fund. Donations from grandparents totaled $107,771 for the fiscal year - 39% of our total dollars raised.

GSL continues to be one the Mid-South’s most accomplished schools, providing its students with a foundation – an anchor – for life. The school’s achievements, however, are made possible primarily because of its people: its faculty and staff, of course, and its families and parental leadership. THANKS TO OUR PARENTS’ ASSOCIATION We must also give extra credit to our hardworking Parents’ Association (P.A.) for another fabulous fundraising year. Under the expert leadership of President Michelle Couch (mom of Allen ‘13, Caroline ‘16, and Emma ‘19), volunteers worked tirelessly all year to organize and host special events for students, faculty, and families – and to raise money for GSL’s Teacher Wish Lists. This year, the organization raised a grand total of $71,503 to benefit GSL!

THE P.A. CONNECTION

ABOUT THE P.A. GSL’s strong parent community – known as the Parents’ Association (P.A.) – is one of the school’s greatest assets. This is evident each year as parents work together to support GSL’s leadership team, staff and faculty through various activities, events, fundraisers and volunteer opportunities.

While the P.A. has a Board that oversees such efforts, every parent is a member.

The P.A. has various options for all parents to get involved, regardless of the amount of time one might have to offer. Some examples include volunteering as room parents, library helpers, and field trip drivers.

In addition, the P.A. sponsors a variety of fun events and fundraisers throughout the year, each requiring event chairs or behind-the-scenes volunteers. The P.A. also provides parent education opportunities and keeps parents informed about upcoming events.

STUDENTS “DRAW” ON EXPERIENCE OF FAMOUS AUTHOR Thanks to the efforts of GSL parent Kristen Vining, students were given a rare, unforgettable experience on September 15. Tom Watson, author of the children’s book series Stick Dog and Stick Cat, shared his time and talents with students during school and later that evening during Family Reading Night.

Watson’s dynamic, interactive presentation inspired students to find their inner artist. Once the masterpieces were finished, he surprised students by signing their original artwork! To learn more about Tom Watson and his books, visit stickdogbooks.com.

Beyond giving back to the school, the P.A. provides avenues for parents to develop relationships with each other, which ultimately strengthens the experience at GSL for their child(ren) and themselves.

THE P.A. IMPACT With the funds raised annually, the P.A. helps fulfill faculty wish list items and contributes to program and facility enhancements. Just last year the P.A. contributed $71,503 to GSL. The impressive list of how these funds were raised is outlined on page 15.

With many successful events already accomplished this school year, the P.A. is thrilled about the many exciting things still to come!

2016 GRANDPARENTS’ DAY Tuesday, November 22 at GSL All grandparents and grand friends are encouraged to join our young Saints for Grandparents’ Day, GSL’s annual celebration held just before Thanksgiving. For many years, Lisa was a vital member of both the Grace-St. Luke’s and the St. Agnes-St. Dominic families. Her 19-year administrative career at GSL ended in 2004 when she died after a brave, year-long battle with cancer. Her husband, “Coach Lass,” also worked at GSL for 20 years before joining the staff at St. Agnes, where he serves as Athletic Director. Their daughters Jenny, Kate and Jamie all attended GSL and St. Agnes.

Prior to her illness, Lisa was an avid runner.

This 5K run in her memory helps further the worthy missions of organizations that meant a great deal to her.

Family: Husband Peter, children William (27), Christina (24) and Ted (19) First job: First teaching job: I started teaching middle school English (6th, 7th grades) at Colton Middle School in Colton, OR in 2006.

Favorite children’s book: My favorite book growing up was Harriet the Spy by Louise Fitzhugh. I remember having my own notebook where I’d write notes about my classmates, just like Harriet did. I never did become an author, though.

Favorite school subject: Although I now love teaching English and language arts, I loved math in school, and now all my children are using mathematics far beyond my comprehension in their college and graduate school studies.

Last book read: I am still reading Infinite Jest by David Foster Wallace. It’s taking me a long time to get through, but I find it fascinating. Not a light read.
