LETTER FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL
Dr. Andy Surber
At Grace-St. Luke’s Episcopal School, tradition anchors the community while innovation opens new avenues for growth, and that has happened here on the corner of Belvedere Boulevard and Peabody Avenue for the past 78 years! This balance and longevity define the school’s identity and shape the experiences of our students, families, and alumni.
GSL has always valued academic growth, belonging, and respect for others. Generations of families and alumni share a connection to these traditions, creating continuity and comfort that makes the school feel like home.
Curriculum enhancements highlight GSL’s commitment to student success. A new phonics curriculum in the Lower School is strengthening literacy foundations, while the addition of math options in Middle School gives students the chance to stretch academically and prepare for high school with confidence. We are proud of our efforts to meet students where they are academically and socially, and take them as far as possible!
Faculty development remains central, with programs like responsive classroom training helping teachers foster strong communities, integrate social-emotional learning, and ensure that every child is nurtured and supported.
Alumni serve as ambassadors, advocates, coaches, and teachers, connecting new families to the GSL experience. Our recruitment efforts combine warm personal storytelling with creative digital outreach, ensuring we cast a wide net to reach those interested in becoming part of our vibrant, welcoming tradition.
Campus improvements reflect GSL’s dedication to creating spaces where children can thrive. Recent updates include new playground enclosures that enhance safety while preserving outdoor play, along with renovated classrooms in the former multipurpose room. These updated learning environments were designed to meet the needs of today’s students.
At GSL, honoring tradition doesn’t mean standing still, it means staying true to values while preparing students for tomorrow. Anchored in our purpose and united in our mission, Grace-St. Luke’s continues to grow as a place where children belong, discover, and thrive.
I appreciate the incredible role that GSL plays in the lives of our families and the Memphis community. As we look to the future, we can all be proud to know that GSL continues to do right by students and families on this special corner of Belvedere Boulevard and Peabody Avenue.
Go, Saints!
Andy Surber, Ed.D. Head of School
LETTER FROM THE BOARD PRESIDENT
Natalie Davis
Dear GSL Community,
Every time I step onto the Grace-St. Luke’s campus, I am struck by the incredible feeling of energy. It’s in the hallways, on the playgrounds, and in the classrooms, and it’s a wonderful reminder of the vibrant community we all share. This energy is fueled by our collective investment in our school.
You can see the foundation for this in the many physical improvements made over the past few months. New brick enclosures now beautifully secure both GSL’s Preschool Playground at Miss Lee’s and the turf playground on Lemaster, providing a safe backdrop for the joyful sounds of our students at play. To accommodate our growing classes, the Lower School Multipurpose Room was transformed over the summer into two dynamic new classrooms that are now buzzing with enthusiastic and engaged first grade learners. Less visible, but critically important, are foundational investments like a new roof over McClure Hall, drainage improvements at several entry points, and restroom renovations—all ensuring our campus is safe and secure.
Of course, this vibrant atmosphere is no accident. It is cultivated by our outstanding GSL Leadership Team, whose reports at the Board of Trustees' annual retreat in August were truly inspiring. The love, dedication, and enthusiasm our Leadership Team, faculty, and staff have for our school and our students is evident in how they continually push us toward achieving our strategic goals. They set the tone, and the energy we feel on campus starts with them.
As we embark on another year at Grace-St. Luke’s, I have never felt more excitement about where we are and where we are going. Our mission—to prepare boys and girls to become creative problem solvers, confident lifelong learners, and responsible citizens in their communities and the world—anchors us and sets our course.
On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I extend my tremendous thanks to all of you for your continued support. With your help, we are on our way to another wonderful and energetic year at GSL.
With Gratitude,
Natalie Davis President, Board of Trustees

P.A. EVENTS STRENGTHEN GSL COMMUNITY
By Carey Pontius, Parents’ Association President
Another fantastic school year is underway at GSL, thanks in large part to the families that make up this wonderful community! Did you know that every parent/ guardian at GSL is automatically a member of the Parents’ Association? Every one of you helps make this community what it is, through your enthusiasm, your positive word-ofmouth, and your gifts of time, talent, and treasure. We are so much stronger together, and we invite you all to join the fun and participate in the GSL traditions and events that make our community so special.
Why Is the P.A. Important?
The P.A. sponsors a variety of community building and fundraising events throughout the school year. Dollars raised support the school in many meaningful ways, including funding classroom enhancements, new curriculum, and teacher wish list items that directly benefit the students’ learning experiences.
Last year, under the guidance of P.A. President Anna Blair, our organization raised more than $120,000, which was poured directly back into the school to help purchase technology such as iPads and smartboards, furniture and shelving for classrooms, new instruments for the music program, landscape enhancements for Preschool’s Outdoor Classroom, and many other items on our teachers' wish lists.
How Can I Plug In?
P.A. fundraising is already underway this year, and the best way to know what’s going on is by reading the weekly eNews, where we will promote our events and offer ways to volunteer or participate. You can also support GSL by purchasing Spirit Wear! Scan the QR code below to shop online (or click Spirit Store on the top navigation bar at gslschool.org).
I’m Ready! What’s Next?
See our upcoming events listed in the box at right and mark your calendars now! In 2026 we’ll have the Sweetheart Dance and Son-Day Fun Day events for families in 4th-8th grades, the Preschool and Lower School Book Swap, and the 8th Grade Italian Dinner, which is open to all GSL families. We are counting on the entire community to come out for our biggest annual fundraiser, the Anchor Auction, on April 10, and we invite all GSL moms to save the date for a brand-new event—the Women's Tennis Tournament—to be held this spring.
Join in the fun, and thank you so much for supporting your Parents’ Association. Go, Saints!

Donors Fund New Playground Enclosures
By Brenda Berry, Director of Advancement
In recent years, the world has seen rising concerns about school violence and threats, making it imperative for GSL to take steps to ensure the protection of our school community. Through discussions with—and the support of—the Board of Trustees, faculty, staff, Grace-St. Luke’s Church, and GSL families, that is exactly what we did.
At recess these days, the sound of laughter carries across the playgrounds as children climb, swing, and explore. Parents and teachers look on with peace of mind, knowing the new playground enclosures provide safe and secure spaces for play.
Thanks to the generosity of GSL Parents Farley and Ed Ezekiel, GSL Parents Emily and Greg Gianis, and GSL Grandparents Amy and Dave Howe, the Preschool and Lemaster playgrounds are now enclosed, creating safer boundaries for children while preserving the joy and freedom of outdoor play.
Safety: Top of Mind
Before son Teddy ’35 even started at GSL, Farley and Ed Ezekiel attended a “New Parent Welcome” event for incoming families.
“I remember asking about GSL’s plans to enhance campus security at that event,” Farley recalls. “We fell in love with everything GSL had to offer, but wanted to know how the school was working to ensure the safety of children, especially during outdoor play.”
In October 2024, Farley was excited to learn about a new security enhancement project underway. She was at an Anchor Fund meeting for ambassadors, a role that she and husband Ed fulfilled during the 2024-25 school year.
At that meeting, ambassadors learned about the playground enclosures that GSL was working on. Farley remembers seeing the enclosure renderings and instantly wanting to be involved.
“I was so excited to see the plans for this much-needed safety feature,” Farley says. “I immediately shared the details with my family, knowing that they equally value the importance of outdoor play in a safe setting.”
Soon after, Head of School Dr. Andy Surber and Director of Advancement Brenda Berry met with members of the Ezekiel, Gianis, and Howe families to provide a more in-depth look at plans for the playground enclosures, including the projected timeline and cost.
“We were eager to learn more about this project— something that we were very interested in supporting,” Amy says. “It was important for us to see this move forward as soon as possible.”
GSL was hard at work to make that happen. In partnership with alumnus Peter Warren ’92 of the Office of Basic Architecture (OOBA), GSL obtained input from the Central Gardens Association and approval from the Memphis Landmarks Commission for the enclosure design plans. GSL then reviewed competitive construction bids to build the two six-foot tall brick enclosures—adorned with glass brick cross accents throughout the design and built-in planter boxes along the base—to enclose both the Preschool and Lemaster playgrounds.
The last leg of this project before construction could begin was to secure the $350,000 to fund this important security enhancement. Surber and Berry met with Farley and Emily in early 2025 to provide a project status update and to share the projected cost.
The next day, the families shared exciting news with GSL: They wanted to fully fund this capital project.

GTG Superintendent Alan Cecil, GTG Project Manager Heather Marshalek, Director of Advancement Brenda Berry, Head of Middle School Ellen Hendry, Head of School Andy Surber, GSL Board President Natalie Davis, Lead Architect Peter Warren, and GTG Superintendent Joe Whitten celebrate at the final walk-through for the Lemaster Playground enclosure.
“Improving safety was paramount to our family, so making this investment in GSL was an easy decision for us all,” Amy says. “We wanted our daughters, and all families at GSL, to feel reassured that children have a safe place to grow, play, and thrive. This was a natural way for us to give back.”
Their generous gift allowed GSL to begin construction in March 2025. GSL hired Grinder, Taber, & Grinder to oversee the construction of the two playground enclosures. GSL also repurposed the fence that previously encased the Preschool playground. It was moved across the Preschool parking lot to fence off the east side of Anchor Hill, making that popular space for play much safer.
Safety Without Compromise
Now completed, the new playground enclosures have been well-received. “The enclosures provide the much-needed safety without compromising the aesthetic of the school campus,” Emily says.
Parents, teachers, and staff continue to express gratitude for this added layer of security.
“Children are fully present in their play, teachers feel protected now that access and visibility to the children is drastically reduced, and parents feel more at ease knowing their children have safer play spaces,” says Head of Preschool Cynthia Hill.
Emily agrees, saying, “We believe play is essential to childhood. These enclosures allow the students to experience the joy of play, while providing parents with the joy of safety.”
A Community Investment
The playground enclosures also reflect a broader vision: When a community comes together to care for its children, everyone benefits. This project is not just about safety today, but about creating a lasting legacy of protection and joy for future generations at GSL, right here in the heart of Memphis.
“Memphis is a great place to raise a family,” says Amy. “This is an investment in childhood, in GSL, and in Memphis, and we are honored to be a part of this beautiful addition to GSL’s historic campus.”

FIRST GRADERS STEP INTO TRANSFORMED SPACE
By Marci Woodmansee ’83, Director of Communications
Uniforms, real lockers, lunch in the Anchor Center… and this year, brand new classrooms! Thirty lucky first graders— our Class of 2033—got to celebrate all these things when they stepped into the newly renovated northwest corner of the Lower School Building this August.
The refresh was a long time coming. Built as part of Bratton Hall in 1975, the space that went under construction this summer served as GSL’s original school cafeteria for its first 35 years. Upon being decommissioned as the cafeteria with the opening of the Anchor Center in 2010, it took on new life as our Lower School Multipurpose Room.
True to its name, the versatile open space served many purposes over the past 15 years. It was used by ACE for both after school and early morning care. Senior Kindergartners ate lunch there together in recent years. The former kitchen became a new home for the school nurse. GSL hosted a Lower School Curriculum Night there last spring. And many former Saints will remember that its south wall featured a mural painted in 1998 by Memphis artist and GSL alumni parent Jimpsie Ayres, in which four students were depicted, thanks to gifts made by their parents to the school’s Anchor Auction.
In planning last spring for the current school year, GSL’s enrollment growth in Lower School precipitated the need to expand the available classrooms on the ground floor. Consequently, GSL commissioned design plans from OOBA founder Peter Warren ’92 to transform the space. Construction began in June with Grinder, Taber, & Grinder
at the helm, and GSL’s new first grade classrooms quickly took shape. Thanks to an accelerated construction pace, the school proudly opened the redesigned, light-filled classrooms just in time for the start of school in August.
Notable new design features include a spacious and easily accessible hallway, with a carpeted ramp that replaced the former steps. Light fixtures were added in red ceiling blocks that matched earlier updates to the existing first floor hallway. The black and white checkerboard tiles that mirror the floor in Lass Hall were retained in each classroom—a nod to traditions at GSL. Both classrooms have spacious storage closets, and a hallway storage was also added. The nurse’s office gained a more setback, private entrance. A final touch was the addition of a display space in the main hallway, where the Lower School Head of School and Bishop’s Award winner plaques are now installed.
According to Head of School Dr. Andy Surber, being intentionally thoughtful in the design planning stage allowed GSL to coordinate colors and tie into existing aesthetics, thus balancing some traditional features with innovative and modern additions.
“I’m thrilled that the growth in our Lower School enrollment allowed us the opportunity to create some beautiful new learning spaces that are engaging, ageappropriate, and aesthetically pleasing,” Surber says. “We believe they’ll stand the test of time very well.”

RECENT RENOVATIONS BEAUTIFY MCCLURE HALL
By Brenda Berry, Director of Advancement
From musical performances and theatrical productions to faculty meetings, class parties, and more, McClure Hall is a multipurpose room and performing arts venue used almost daily by both Grace-St. Luke’s School and Church. This popular space was in need of a variety of upgrades, and today it looks fresh, clean, and bright thanks to a generous donation from GSL Grandparents Lisa and Jim Maddox.
Completed in 2024, McClure Hall’s renovation included a long list of upgrades. The first phase of updates entailed the removal of vinyl wall coverings and prepping and painting the walls, drywall soffits, doors, and frames. It also included the cleaning of all HVAC registers, the demolition of ceiling tiles, and the installation of new acoustic ceiling tiles.
The next phase of work included the installation of a laser projector and nine sound-absorbing wall units, featuring fabric-wrapped acoustical panels. Finally, the room was completed with the installation of a custom-made curtain for the stage, which was designed with input from Performing Arts Teacher Leslie Reddick.
We are so grateful to the Maddox family for their tremendous support of GSL!
Son Sights, Charlie Olsen, and Addison Fields pose with classroom tree Carl, the Norfolk Pine, in Mrs. Shadow’s new room.
The space’s former mural, created by artist Jimpsie Ayres, featured then-students Kendall Jones Franklin ’04, Cash McCracken ’00, Brittany Norcross ’01, and Ann Burruss Prascher ’98. A print of the piece is on display outside the new classrooms.
McClure Hall looks sharp in pre-production rehearsals for Roald Dahl’s James and the Giant Peach Jr. this fall.
2025-26 ANCHOR FUND: BUILDING ON SUCCESS
By Brenda Berry, Director of Advancement
The energy across campus this school year is contagious. Classrooms are filled with curiosity, the halls echo with joy, and a renewed sense of purpose is guiding our community forward. Thanks to the generosity of so many, GSL has already experienced meaningful growth in recent years—safer outdoor spaces, more engaging classrooms, inspired faculty, and new opportunities for students to thrive. This year, with the leadership of our Anchor Fund Co-Chairs, we are excited to continue building on that momentum.
THE 2025-26 ANCHOR FUND CO-CHAIRS
Allison and Steven King are serving their second year as Anchor Fund Co-Chairs. The Kings have been part of the GSL community since 2019. Allison, a nurse practitioner at Mid-South Dermatology and adjunct faculty member with Thrive AP, also serves on the school’s Board of Trustees. Steven, general counsel at Trout Unlimited, has long been active at Grace-St. Luke’s Church, including service on the vestry and in diocesan roles. Together, the Kings bring a passion for strengthening GSL both inside and outside the classroom. They enjoy traveling and spending time outdoors, especially on the Little Red River in Arkansas and skiing out west.
Meghan and Ben Barksdale join as first-year Anchor Fund CoChairs. The Barksdales have been part of GSL for nine years and are active members of both Grace-St. Luke’s School and Grace-St. Luke’s Church. Meghan, a University of Georgia graduate, worked in client services at McVean Trading & Investments for 20 years and has served the GSL community in countless volunteer leadership roles, including as P.A. president, treasurer, and co-chair of several events. Ben, a lifelong Memphian and CBHS graduate, also attended the University of Georgia and has worked in fixed income with Cantor Fitzgerald for nearly 20 years. He is currently in his seventh and final year on the GSL Board of Trustees, serving the two previous years as Board President, and continues to invest in young people as head coach of the CBHS Varsity Golf Team.
ANCHORED IN PURPOSE, UNITED IN MISSION
The Kings and Barksdales share a deep belief in the mission of GSL and the Anchor Fund. They know that when students feel inspired by their environment, they are empowered to explore, create, and lead. Anchor Fund gifts make this possible by strengthening classrooms with flexible, student-centered design; enriching learning through technology, the arts, and outdoor experiences; equipping teachers with the tools and training they need to thrive; and ensuring that a GSL education remains accessible to families through robust financial aid.
Together, the Kings and the Barksdales invite the entire GSL community to join them in building on the extraordinary progress already achieved. Whether you give once, pledge your support, or set up a recurring gift at gslschool.org/give, every contribution strengthens the people and programs that make GSL such a special place.

GSL parent and alumna Kelly Martin was on 5th Avenue in NYC when she ran into former GSL teacher Lenore Hinson (left), who happened to be sporting vintage GSL Spirit Wear! A Spanish teacher and coach at GSL from 20032006, Hinson is now at the Baccalaureate School for Global Education in Queens. Peter Warren, co-founder of Office of Basic Architecture (OOBA), was GSL’s lead architect for construction of the school’s new playground enclosures and conversion of the Lower School Multipurpose Room (originally the school cafeteria) into new first grade classroom spaces.
Patrick Whitlock joined Williamson County Schools as their athletic director. After 19 years of leading the Ravenwood High School boys basketball team (and 314 victories), the veteran coach began his new role as AD in June. A Vanderbilt graduate, Whitlock took over a young Ravenwood basketball program in 2006 after spending several seasons as part of the Pepperdine University men’s basketball staff. ON THE MEMPHIS MUSIC SCENE: Jesse Wilcox Prepares for Album Launch
Jesse Wilcox stopped by GSL this fall and had a moment to catch up with his former English and Latin Teacher Kimberly White.
Singer/songwriter and roots rock musician Jesse Wilcox ’09 will soon launch a solo album that is sure to make a mark on the Memphis music scene, and even after more than 15 years of performing at venues in and around the city, he still has fond memories of his first live performance—right here at GSL.
“My music journey started in sixth grade when my dad put a guitar in my hands,” Wilcox recalls. Lessons at historic Memphis store Strings & Things followed, along with the formation of his first band, The Doorknobs, alongside eighth grade classmates Nick Riley (drums), Kenneth Piper (guitar), and Bobby Landman (bass). They debuted in the Saints Gym at Friday Celebration’s 8th Grade Talent Show in May 2009.
“I remember everything like it was yesterday,” Wilcox says. “It was a pivotal moment because it was our first time performing in front of a crowd. We were extremely nervous. I remember the instant confidence we felt after seeing everyone’s reaction. That sticks with you.”
There were repeat shows at GSL in 2010 and 2011, and the band played together throughout his high school years at MUS, eventually cutting two records with noted Memphis producer Doug Easley.
2005
Volleyball Coaches Meg Stephenson Burress and Ross Larson celebrate a Homecoming game win this fall.
The former Saints remain close friends today (as Lukers do). Wilcox continued playing throughout his college years at the University of Arkansas, and in subsequent bands China Gate and Daykisser. He’s played the Overton Park Shell, B-Side, Bar DKDC, Hernando’s Hideaway and more, and now he’s putting the final touches on the debut solo album that’s been in the works for the past year.
During the day he's working with another alum, Eric Martin ’84, at Martin Music and preparing for the album release. Stay tuned for the release date and the chance to see him live on stage in the coming months. You can follow him on Instagram @JesseWilcoxMusic and find him on the web at jessewilcox.com.

WHAT IT MEANS TO BE A LUKER
By Katie Stephenson McDermott ’03, Alumni Board Chair
When sitting down to write this letter, I knew this was not a task I could accomplish on my own. Maybe I was putting too much pressure on the content—this is just a short message from the GSL Alumni Association Board, after all—but more than anything, I knew that it takes more than one Luker to accurately communicate the experience of being a Luker. So, I did what any true Luker for Life would do—I reached out to my fellow classmates (yes, we are still in touch 20+ years after graduating from GSL) in an attempt to crowdsource an answer to a poignant but simple question: What does it mean to be a Luker?
Some responses will stay in the group text (it is for the best), but what stood out to me the most was the consistency of them all. That 22 years after we had graduated from GSL, the fondness with which we remembered this special school, this incredible community, remained. We discussed class trips and laps at Snowden Field when we didn’t listen quite that well to Coach Callahan. We laughed about embarrassing acolyte stories from Chapel (yes, I broke the candelabra during an unfortunate altar incident) and debated who broke the door tape on our class trip to Chicago (if you know, you know). We talked about being part of a community grounded in goodness and faith, and how even after all these years, we can still remember what it felt like to be an eighth grader, walking the halls and knowing that our time at this special place was coming to an end.
Reminiscing with these lifelong friends reminded me that what makes this place so special, what makes it so unique and indescribable, is the people. A people who believe in community, kindness, excellence and, above all else, a commitment to the foundation that has made this school what it is for more than 75 years, while also embracing a bold, ever-changing future. Buildings are built, classrooms will change, but what remains is the character of this school, malleable and forever shaped by the people that call it home. Because, at the end of the day, that is what it represents for so many of us.
Your Alumni Association Board has been hard at work reimagining our role and what it means to engage, connect, and promote our school community to an ever-growing alumni base. We are brainstorming new ways for alumni to support our school, and we are excited to announce the first-ever GSL Golf Tournament that will take place in September 2026. This event will be hosted by your GSL Alumni Association Board, with profits going to support the Anchor Fund. We believe in investing in our school community to honor its past and celebrate its future, and we hope you will join us for this inaugural event as a participant, sponsor, donor, and/or volunteer. Also, don’t forget to mark your calendars for May 8, 2026, for our big Alumni Reunion event in the Anchor Center. More information on these two great events coming soon!
There simply aren’t enough pages to share all of the incredible responses I got from my classmates on what it
means to be a part of this community. But one response in particular stands out to me, and feels like the best way to end this message from your Alumni Board: “Being a Luker is a gift.” A gift that we must constantly pay forward, something those of us on the Alumni Association Board are acutely aware of as we prepare to take on new events and new ways to support the GSL community. I am thankful every day for the gift of a GSL education that my parents gave me more than 30 years ago. Today, my three daughters now walk those same halls—experiencing the same Luker magic and joyful learning that my classmates and I still remember so well. What a gift to be a part of this special place.

IN MEMORIAM
Larry Christopher Nicholson ’82
February 12, 1967–August 9, 2025
Chris Nicholson passed away August 9 after a brave battle with cancer. Chris played football and basketball at GSL and was a regular attendee at the school’s alumni reunions. Born in Philadelphia, Chris worked as a digital creator in Bradenton, Fla., at the time of his death. He leaves his wife Jenny and daughter Eva, who shared that he had been managing severe back pain for months before being diagnosed with cancer just days before his death. Eva wrote this tribute on Facebook: “We both know how widely he was loved and how many lives he touched. The outpouring of love and support to our family during this somber time has been greatly, greatly appreciated and we thank each and every loved one dearly.”
John W. Griffin ’95
March 21, 1980–August 28, 2025
John Griffin, a member of GSL’s last ninth grade graduating class, passed away August 28. Born in Memphis, he graduated from Christian Brothers High School and Queens College (now Queens University of Charlotte) in Charlotte, N.C., with a bachelor’s degree in accounting.
