LETTER FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL

Dr. Andy Surber

Dear GSL Community, As Coach Scully, Father Ollie, and I took the stage on a warm Friday evening in August, it was easy to see from the crowd gathered to celebrate the school's 75th anniversary just how valued Grace-St. Luke’s Episcopal School is to so many people. Heartfelt expressions of appreciation, togetherness, support, and community were shared from the stage about this school that everyone loves. Being newly re-introduced to this community, I was moved by the opportunity to play a role in something much larger than myself or any individual. GSL is a lifechanging institution and what happens here matters. It matters for everyone connected to our community, and this is especially true for our current students, families, faculty, and staff. A top goal since joining GSL in July has been building relationships with people in the community. Spending time and having conversations with others has been so very helpful. Many of these connections have taken place in my office; others have been in coffee shops, restaurants, and even on walks around the neighborhood. I value this time as I get to learn, as well as share, a bit about why GSL is so very special. I continue to hold up these cornerstones of our program: our amazing faculty and staff, strong academic program, opportunities for participation in extracurricular activities, and personal development in areas that include social-emotional learning and leadership. As you read this issue of The Anchor, you will see examples of the dynamic learning environment at GSL. It's been fun to celebrate the early successes of our sports teams, see the Jungle Book KIDS performances in October, experience pep rallies, participate in some super Friday Celebrations, and be impressed by our 8th Grade Chapel Talks. It is easy to see the pride our students have in our school through all the exciting events taking place. Of course, we will just be approaching the midpoint of the school year when you read this, so there is much more to come! As we look forward, please hold April 23, 2023 on your calendars, the date of the annual GSL Anchor Auction. It is this night when our adult community gathers together, celebrates all that is good at GSL, and raises funds to help the school continue to provide amazing experiences for all our students, from Little Lukers to our 8th graders. You won’t want to miss this special event! Until then, thank you for helping us maintain the excitement and momentum of our 75th Anniversary Celebration by putting your love for GSL into action. Put out a yard sign, share our social media, and talk about us with your friends and other families who are looking at schools! The best way to honor our 75 years in existence is by working now to plan for our future! Please know that we value your continued support and appreciate the trust you place in us as your school of choice. I look forward to seeing you soon – whether it be on campus, at the fields, or in the community. Go, Saints!
