THE POWER OF PLAY IN AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAMS

When I walk by, the first grade After School Care group is busily creating paper airplanes in the classroom. When I return from my rounds, they have moved into the hallway, clearly intending to test their designs. A small girl steps forward, aims carefully with an expression of deep concentration, and lets the airplane go with deliberate precision. It flops immediately to the ground. There is a split second of silence. Then, the girl doubles over in fits of laughter. The other students join in, giggling, amused by the anticlimax of this debacle. After the students compose themselves, I hear Ms. Abby thoughtfully ask with a smile, “What do we need to do to improve this design? Is the tip too heavy? Do we need to adjust the wings?” Immediately, there is an uptick of excited discussion. Eager to make modifications and try again, they march determinedly back into the classroom to continue tinkering. ... When you think of after school programs, what comes to mind? Before delving into the after school arena as an education professional, I thought these programs were simply a safe place for students to relax until parents could pick them up. While that is certainly a big part of our reason for existing, ACE: After School Care at GSL is so much more than a holdover between school and home.

ACE focuses on the development of the whole child by providing a wide variety of experiences in a fun, playbased environment. We foster academic, social/emotional, and physical development in our students. The most obvious example of academic development is during homework time for students in first grade and above. Our ACE teachers are there to provide assistance to students needing a little extra help in understanding a concept, so that is one way we support the school day. But that is not the only time students are developing academically. The paper airplane project is just one of many examples of how After School Care is a learning experience. To the first graders, the airplanes were just a fun activity, but in reality, they were conducting a series of experiments that challenged their fine motor dexterity, critical thinking skills, and knowledge of physics. We spend a great deal of time planning projects that touch on art, math, science, and language. Additionally, a huge part of what we do as after school care professionals is support social/emotional development.

Just like in any group environment, disputes occur and hurt feelings can follow. While on the playground, friends might differ on the rules of a game, causing frustration. Someone might struggle to express herself or himself when another classmate takes charge of a project. Or two little ones might grapple for the same toy. We guide students to respectfully talk through disagreements. And we help them process emotions using selfreflection, yoga, or breathing exercises. Socializing – and working through peer conflicts – is a healthy part of learning how to appreciate diversity of thought, find your voice, and build empathy for others.

ACE focuses on the development of the whole child by providing a wide variety of experiences in a fun, play-based environment. Lastly, our recreation time helps students’ physical development. Throwing a ball promotes muscle strength, running an obstacle course fine-tunes agility, and swinging independently builds coordination. Running, playing, and hanging out

in the sunshine keep students’ bodies strong, which is immensely important during the best of times, but now, in the midst of a pandemic which so often straps us to a desk or screen, it is crucial. Recreation gives students the chance to stretch their legs and, well, be kids. Our afternoons are brimming with examples of academic, social/emotional, and physical development disguised as simple play. Fun. ... Is ACE: After School Care convenient for families? Definitely! Are we a safe place for students until they are picked up? Absolutely! It’s just that the learning and growing doesn’t stop when school dismisses. Our program is designed to complement the school day and to help students grow into well-rounded individuals. After all, our ACE: After School Care program shares GSL’s mission: To prepare boys and girls to become creative problem solvers, confident lifelong learners, and responsible citizens in their communities and the world. We do that through lots and lots of play.

ACE: After School Care

After School Care provides extended care for students in a nurturing, community-oriented setting. Emphasis is placed on the whole child with opportunities for social, emotional, physical, and academic development.

After School Care Policies Registration Advance registration on UltraCamp for After School Care is required. Because families may not be able to commit to a full semester, After School Care will register monthly this year. Parents should register for after school care - including drop-ins - a minimum of three days in advance to give the ACE office adequate time to ensure proper staffing. However, if on occasion, a student must drop into ACE with less than three days notice, an additional $10 late registration fee will be assessed. Parents wishing to make these arrangements with less than three days notice must email sprather@gslschool.org or call the ACE office at 901278-2685 as soon you know you will need care.

ACE: After School Care is offered on school days from school dismissal until close (6:00 p.m. on regular school days and 5:30 p.m. on half days). Parents may register for After School Care for all days of the month or select days only.

ACE @ Play Packed with engaging programming, ACE @ Play provides students with a safe and fun environment on select days when students are off school.

ACE @ Play is available to all GSL students.

ACE @ Play Policies Registration ACE @ Play is not included in the registration for After School Care. A separate, advance registration for ACE @ Play is required. There is a $15 late registration fee that begins one week prior to the session. No registrations are possible within three days prior to the start of an ACE @ Play session. No dropins are possible. Lunch & Snacks Students must bring two snacks and a lunch, as the cafeteria is not open during school breaks. No food can be microwaved or refrigerated, so the use of room-temperature items, ice packs, and/or thermoses is recommended.

HappyFeet Soccer HappyFeet uses nursery rhymes, songs, stories, and fun games with a soccer ball to maximize motor development. In one HappyFeet class, students get hundreds of touches on the ball, building their confidence in basic techniques while preparing them to be leaders on and off the field. HappyFeet has adapted their curriculum to make sure soccer is super safe and fun. This class will take place outdoors for extra safety, weather permitting. Junior STEM Lab Grab your lab coat and soar into learning with our Junior STEM Lab Club. Each week, our Junior STEM Lab incorporates a fun, hands-on approach to Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. Junior Scientists will participate in weekly STEM challenges that range from coding robots, simple machines, exploring Legos, using microscopes, and more. Let the learning begin! Intermediate Gymnastics Whether this is your child's first class or they've been a gymnast for a while, boys and girls will build their gymnastics skills, learning drills to improve their form, strength, and flexibility. Karate Karate is a martial arts course with influences from Taekwondo, Kung Fu, and Karate. Patrick Register, better known as Mr. Dragon, is a 6th degree black belt who has been teaching at GSL for over 25 years. The emphasis is on self-control, self-confidence, and self-defense. This class will take place outdoors, weather permitting, and has been modified to include no kiai (spirit shouting) for safety reasons. All students must have a uniform to participate. Uniforms can be purchased through the instructor for $45 made payable to Pat Register. New students should send payment in an envelope to the first class. Sewing Club It's "sew" much fun! Boys and girls will enjoy learning new skills while making an original project. This year, sewists will focus on a larger project during each 3 week session, allowing students more time to focus more on creating a finished project. For safety, each sewist will have their own sewing kit and supplies to use with plenty of space to work. No needle experience is necessary.

Part 1: Sew a Softie Create an original softie from start to finish! Sewists will go through the design process of imagining an original softie, drafting a pattern, and sewing it to life. Grades: 1st - 2nd Day of the Week: Tuesdays Dates: February 22 - March 2 Number of Classes: 3 Time: 3:25 - 4:20 p.m. *March 2 class will be extended: 3:25p.m. - 5:10p.m.* Instructor: Amie Plumley Cost: $60

Part 2: Selfie Pillow Say "Cheese!" Using embroidery and other sewing techniques, sewists will create a fabric selfie. The finished selfie will then be transformed into an adorable patchwork pillow. Crazy 8's Math Club This club encourages students to play with math in the most outlandish way – using glow-in-the-dark geometry, tossing dozens of bouncy dice, and flinging marshmallows down the hallway! These high-energy activities appeal to kids of all math abilities. Space is extremely limited in each class, so register early! New Ballet Ensemble: Dance Styles Dance Styles is based on the concept of cultivating a love of dance through exploration and fun! Students will learn basic dance concepts which include: space, speed, shape, and texture within the context of different dance styles such as Ballet, Jazz, Modern, Hip Hop, and West African. The class will study these elements and styles through dance instruction, movement games, lead improvisation and choreography. In this class, the teaching artist will follow the National Dance Institute's teaching method. This is a high energy and exciting class that students will enjoy! This class requires tennis shoes. Chess Club Chess Club encourages problem-solving, fosters analytical skills, enhances critical thinking, and strengthens memory. Members are taught by active chess players who meet the high standards of Mid-South Chess where “chess is an art, a science, and a sport.” This class has been adapted to adhere to physical distancing. 1st and 2nd graders will use a projector and other creative methods to ensure space during games. 3rd graders and up will need to bring their GSL computers to class to sparr one-on-one across the classroom. Schedule Unfortunately, ACE is unable to accommodate students taking virtual enrichment classes while in After School Care. Enrichment classes – in person or virtual – will not meet on school half days or holidays. No credit or refund will be given for students who are registered for more than one program on a particular day or time. It is the parents’ responsibility to ensure a student is not registered for overlapping classes. The ACE office will not contact parents when a student is not in attendance, and no credit or refund will be given for a student who chooses not to attend an enrichment class. No prorated credits or refunds will be given for student absences from enrichment classes, even in the case of an absence due to a COVID-19 quarantine.

Dismissal Students attending an enrichment class will attend After School Care for no additional charge prior to the start of their enrichment class. However, students must be picked up immediately after the end of the enrichment class at the next designated carpool time. Otherwise, a $25 fee will apply to attend After School Care after the class. (See the Dismissal section on page 26 to view the entire policy.)

Registration Advance registration for enrichment classes is required. Classes are filled on a firstcome, first-served basis until three days prior to the start of the class or when spots have been filled. No registrations are possible within 24 hours prior to the start of the class. Online Policies In addition to GSL's Technology Acceptable Use Policy*, the following policies apply: The educational tools and remote learning services used during enrichment courses are chosen at the discretion of the camp instructor/vendor and may not coincide with the tools chosen by Grace-St. Luke’s. We ask that you cooperate with instructors/vendors in supplying your child with the software necessary to attend enrichment services, dependent on the course. Technical support will not be provided by Grace-St. Luke’s during virtual enrichment classes. Responsibility for this falls to parents/guardians.

By enrolling or remaining in a virtual enrichment class, parents/guardians agree to the supervision of their child during the time of the class. *Available in the 2020-21 Parent/Student Handbook

Health Standards GSL holds its enrichment vendors to the same standards as the school’s faculty and staff. Enrichment vendors are provided the school’s health and safety procedures, policies, and protocols to ensure compliance. While on campus and conducting classes, vendors and instructors commit to:

Complete GSL’s COVID19 screening and temperature check upon arrival

Maintain small group sizes to allow ample individual spacing

Maintain and implement physical distancing of 6 feet or greater

Limit classes to 1-2 grades in each group to avoid unnecessary mixing of cohorts

Wear and implement masks unless outdoors and spaced apart appropriately

Provide individual materials and equipment only unless properly sanitized or disinfected between uses

Follow proper cleaning, sanitization, and disinfection procedures based on CDC guidance

Wash or sanitize hands before and after each class, or whenever hands are soiled

All policies and procedures in GSL’s parent/student handbooks apply to ACE. The following are additional policies specific to ACE.

Registration GSL uses UltraCamp to manage all ACE registrations and billing activity. An UltraCamp account with a valid credit card on file is required to register for all ACE programs. Before registering, new families should: 1. Create an UltraCamp account 2. Add a credit card

To register: 1. View upcoming sessions and select the offering your child is interested in attending 2. Proceed to checkout and pay the fee Program fees must be paid in full three days prior to the start of the program for a student to be enrolled. Registration closes three business days prior to the start of the program. Program dates, times, and locations can be found in UltraCamp or in the ACE brochure. ACE reserves the right to reschedule, modify, or cancel a program for reasons such as, but not exclusive to, insufficient enrollment, instructor illness, or a pivot to remote learning. In the event of a cancellation by the school, a full credit will be issued to the student’s UltraCamp account.

In the event of a cancellation by a family for After School Care or ACE @ Play, parents must email sprather@gslschool.org five days prior to the start of the program in order to receive credit. If not cancelled before this time, no credit will be given. No prorated credits or refunds will be given for student absences from enrichment classes, regardless of advance notice.

Attendance Parents are asked to communicate with ACE regarding any change in your child’s attendance in ACE by calling the ACE office at 901-278-2685 or emailing sprather@gslschool.org.

If a student did not attend school on a given day, then he or she is not eligible to participate in ACE activities that afternoon. Unless the offering is fully virtual, there is no remote alternative to ACE offerings. No prorated credits or refunds will be given for student absences for After School Care or ACE @ Play except in the event a student must be absent due to a COVID-19 quarantine lasting three or more days. Families are responsible for notifying ACE of this absence immediately upon starting the quarantine in order to receive a credit. Prorated credits or refunds, even in the event of a COVID-19 quarantine, are not possible for enrichment classes. Students must be supervised on campus at all times. Therefore, an on-campus student not checked into another program will be required to attend After School Care. If not registered for After School Care in advance, an additional fee will apply.

Dismissal ACE has staggered dismissal times. Families should pick up at either 4:30, 5:15, or 6:00 p.m. in the carpool line. On Wednesdays, families have an additional choice to pick up at 3:00 p.m. Should a parent need to pick up outside these hours due to an emergency, parents should call the ACE office at 901-278-2685. Otherwise, parents must make arrangements to pick up at one of the designated dismissal times.

At the Preschool, parents should pull up to the red awning in the Miss Lee’s lot. All occupants of the car are required to wear a mask. Please be prepared to buckle your child in once he or she is brought to you. In Lower School, parents should pull up to the circle driveway. In Middle School, parents should pull up to the awning next to the middle school building on Lemaster Street. An ACE staff member will check your identification, then bring your child to you. Please be prepared to wait in your vehicle for a few minutes, as your child will need time to gather his or her items. Remain in your vehicle unless your child needs assistance getting into the vehicle and buckling. Parents with children in multiple divisions will need to go through each carpool line separately, so please plan accordingly. Students will only be released to an adult listed on the approved pick-up list. Parents may make arrangements for someone other than those listed to pick up a child by informing the ACE office in writing at sprather@gslschool.org. Anyone picking up may be asked to show valid picture identification until the staff become familiar with them. Parents with students who walk home independently in After School Care should notify the ACE office in writing in advance and include the time in which the student should depart campus.

Communication Program-wide information appears in the weekly eNews. Additionally, any changes to programs will be emailed to the parents of participants. To view photos and see reminders, add ACE on the app Class Dojo. This is a private, secure group shared only with GSL families. Invitations will be shared with those registered in ACE. Unless parents notify the Director of Auxiliary Programs in writing, they consent to the use, publication, and copyright by GSL of any material created by their child and of any photographs, video, and/or audio recordings in which their child may appear in programs or activities of GSL. Parents allow the usage of these materials in any of GSL’s publications and promotional materials, via print, radio, television, outdoor, internet, and social media. The foregoing consent shall extend beyond a child’s registration in this program.

Lunch & Snacks Students have an opportunity to eat a snack in after school care. All students are required to bring a pre-packaged afternoon snack each day. Parents are encouraged to send snacks in easy to open containers that require minimal adult assistance.

During ACE @ Play, students must bring two snacks and a lunch, as the cafeteria is not open during school breaks. No food can be microwaved or refrigerated, so the use of room-temperature items, ice packs, and/or thermoses is recommended.

It is expected that every student utilizing ACE adhere to the school's procedures and standards of behavior, which are located in the handbook on GSL’s website. ACE reserves the right to dismiss any student from the program whose behavior becomes unmanageable.

Electronics Because we strive to develop connections within our ACE community, personal electronics such as cell phones and tablets are not allowed. Students will be allowed to use the office phone to contact a parent if needed, and parents are encouraged to call the office at 901-278-2685 if you need to contact your child. ACE staff may give permission for school-owned tablets or laptops to be used during closely supervised homework times.

Illness

Students who are experiencing symptoms of a communicable illness or disease will be separated from the group, and the parent will be contacted immediately and asked to make arrangements to pick up the student. Expedient action to pick up the student within the hour will be required for his or her own personal care. ACE will follow GSL’s protocols for any child who is experiencing symptoms.

Late Pick-Up A late pick-up fee of $5 per minute will be charged for any student whose parent is not waiting in the last carpool line promptly at closing time. Parents should inform the staff if they will be late by calling the office at 901-278-2685.
