Dear Readers, Craftsmanship, local region and tradition have always been the values that shape whatever we make and who we are. That’s why inside this issue of Bathings you will find stories that talk about the strong links between the history that preceded us, places and traditions, a precious beacon that also guides us in our innovations.

We have gone on a journey that has taken us to Italy’s far north, where we were able to admire the splendid architecture of the new Adler Lodge Ritten which has become a harmonious part of the Renon plateau. Respect and the memory of place are also themes we find in “Anima, testa, storia”, a piece devoted to Adolf Vallazza, an extraordinary and internationally renowned sculptor from Alto-Adige. Further south, our trip takes us to Civita Castellana where for over 50 years Vicenzo Dobboloni has been the historical memory of our ceramic region.

But journeys also provide inspiration, an opening towards the new. Like the collection Kube X in which we combined the market’s best available technology with slender, light forms; and like our additions to the range of Color Elements with Ardesia, Cenere and the precious finishings Gold and Platinum.

Our itinerary concludes with a metropolitan cross-section of 5 cities in which we show you how to make even small bathrooms comfortable.

Sehr geehrte Leser und Leserinnen,

Artigianato, territorio e tradizione sono da sempre i valori sui quali abbiamo plasmato la nostra produzione, e prima ancora il nostro carattere.

Per questo motivo, all’interno di questo numero di Bathings, troverete racconti che parlano di forti connessioni tra la storia che ci ha preceduto, i luoghi e la tradizione, preziosa bussola che ci orienta anche nelle nostre innovazioni.

Un viaggio che ci ha portati all’estremo nord della nostra penisola, dove abbiamo potuto ammirare la splendida architettura del nuovo Adler Lodge Ritten, rispettosamente inseritosi nell’altipiano del Renon. Rispetto e memoria dei luoghi che ritroviamo in “Anima, testa, storia”, le pagine dedicate ad Adolf Vallazza, straordinario scultore altoatesino di fama internazionale. Puntando verso sud, il nostro viaggio è proseguito a Civita Castellana, dove da oltre 50 anni Vincenzo Dobboloni è memoria storica del nostro distretto ceramico.

Ma i viaggi sono anche ispirazione, apertura verso il nuovo. Come la collezione Kube X, in cui abbiamo coniugato il meglio della tecnologia disponibile sul mercato con forme sottili e leggere; e come l’ampliamento della gamma dei Color Elements, con Ardesia, Cenere e le preziose finiture Gold e Platinum. Unsere Reise hat uns in den äußersten Norden der italienischen Halbinsel geführt, wo wir staunend vor der innovativen Architektur der neuen Adler Lodge Ritten stehen, die sich respektvoll und harmonisch in die Landschaft des Rittner Plateaus einfügt. Respekt und Gedächtnis sind auch Schlüsselworte für die Orte, die wir im Kapitel „Anima, testa, storia“ zu Adolf Vallazza wiederfinden, diesem herausragenden, international renommierten Südtiroler Bildhauer. In this natural paradise, amidst impressive stands of larch, last June the Sanoner family expanded its guest capacity with a new structure: the Adler Lodge Ritten. Unlike other spa resorts that target clients more interested in Wellness and Medical Wellness, the Adler Lodges have been specially designed for people who cherish quieter, more intimate surroundings, far from the noise and hubbub of daily life. Bathings spoke to Franziska Sanoner who belongs to the seventh generation of a family involved in managing resorts.

FS: Franziska Sanoner Our family has always made it a priority to respect the culture of a place. All our buildings are designed to produce as little impact as possible on the areas that surround them because they reproduce the architecture of the place. Like the Adler Lodge Alpe, the Renon Lodges are characterized by a decentralized design, reminiscent of mountain cabins, though in a modern style that uses local larch wood, and in the suites, fir from the Siusi Alps. A differenza degli SPA Resorts, rivolti ad una clientela più interessata al mondo Wellness e Medical Wellness, gli Adler Lodges sono stati concepiti per chi ama contesti più intimi, raccolti, lontani dal caos e dalla frenesia quotidiana. Tutte le nostre strutture cercano di essere il meno impattante possibile sui territori che li ospitano perché riprendono l’architettura del posto. Im Unterschied zu SPA Resorts, die sich an eine Kundschaft richten, die mehr an Wellness und Medical Wellness interessiert ist, sprechen die Adler Lodges Menschen an, die intimere, kontemplativere Orte bevorzugen, weitab vom Chaos und der Hektik der Städte. Alle unsere Gebäude versuchen, die Territorien, die sie beherbergen und deren Architektur sie wiederaufnehmen, so schonend wie möglich zu behandeln. Wie die Adler Lodge Alpe zeichnen sich auch die Rittner Lodges durch eine dezentralisierte Architektur aus und erinnern an Sennhütten im modernen Gewand, zu deren Bau Lärchenholz der Gegend verwendet

a trip I took with my family to Namibia. There we experienced a quiet, friendly atmosphere almost as if we were at home. And so we thought we’d like to transfer this idea into a hospitality project. From that place and from other trips to India and Canada we drew important inspirations that also enriched the interior design (in the hall local larch is printed with ethnic patterns that were taken from an Indian carpet, ed. note). The culture of a place isn’t just expressed through architecture but also involves other aspects.

Like for example our kitchen which procures its supplies from small local producers and farmers, and also our line of cosmetic products, created in our own labs using the water and herbs from Alto-Adige. A high degree of luxury and comfort but that also ensures a balance with environmental sustainability.

When you joined the company’s management team, thanks to your professional experience in marketing and communication strategies, you worked on your brand identity and came up with the word Lightness, which is at the heart of your philosophy.

Exactly. We wanted to find a word that sums up the feeling our guests breathe in as soon as they enter our resorts. The concept of Lightness is multi-faceted. Starting from the kind of relationship that exists between our staff and our guests.

Lì abbiamo vissuto in un’atmosfera raccolta e amichevole quasi come fossimo a casa, e quindi abbiamo pensato di trasferire questa idea in un progetto ricettivo. Da questo luogo, e da altri viaggi in India e in Canada abbiamo tratto importanti ispirazioni che hanno arricchito anche l’interior design (nella hall il larice locale è stampato con texture etniche riprese da un tappeto indiano, ndr). La cultura del luogo non passa solo attraverso l’architettura ma coinvolge anche altri aspetti. Come ad esempio il reparto cucina che si approvvigiona di materie prime acquistate dai piccoli produttori locali e dai contadini, e anche la nostra linea cosmetica, realizzata nei nostri laboratori con acqua ed erbe dell’Alto Adige. Un alto livello di lusso e comfort ma che garantisce un equilibrio con la sostenibilità ambientale.

Con la sua entrata nel management dell’azienda, grazie alla sua esperienza professionale nell’ambito delle strategie di marketing e comunicazione, lei ha lavorato sull’identità del vostro marchio individuando nella parola Leggerezza, l’essenza della vostra filosofia.

Esatto, abbiamo elaborato una ricerca per trovare una parola che riassumesse la sensazione che vorremmo i nostri ospiti respirassero quando entrano nei nostri resorts.

Die Idee zu unseren Lodges hatten wir auf einer Reise mit meiner Familie in Namibia. Dort wohnten wir in einer ruhigen und freundschaftlichen Atmosphäre ganz wie bei uns zu Hause, so dass wir beschlossen haben, dieses Wohnkonzept in unser Lodge-Projekt einfließen zu lassen.

Von diesem Ort und anderen Reisen durch Indien und Kanada haben wir wichtige Anreize mitgenommen, die unser Innendesign bereichert haben (im Foyer nimmt etwa das heimische Lärchenholz die Muster eines indischen Teppichs auf, Anm.d.Red.). Aber die Kultur eines Ortes äußert sich nicht nur in der Architektur, sondern bezieht auch andere Aspekte mit ein. Wie zum Beispiel die Küche: Hier bestimmen Zutaten das Bild, die wir bei kleinen lokalen Herstellern und Bauern kaufen. Oder unsere Kosmetiklinie, die unsere Labors mit Wasser und Kräutern Südtirols herstellen.

Produkte, die Luxus und Komfort schenken, aber gleichzeitig im Einklang mit der Umwelt stehen.

Angesichts Ihrer langjährigen Berufserfahrung als Marketingund Kommunikationsstrategin hat Ihr Eintritt in die Unternehmensleitung auch Auswirkungen auf die Identität Ihrer Marke gehabt, die nun das Wort "Leichtigkeit" prägt, gewissermaßen die Essenz Ihrer Philosophie.

We believe that, besides attention to detail and striving for excellence in all our processes, it’s also important to focus on providing friendly and sincere service. Lightness is also part of the offer we studied, an all-inclusive formula in which our guests can freely use all the resort’s services: starting from the main meals, from the snacks, the buffets that are always ready, free wine tasting of many types of wine, to individual or group activities with the possibility of participating in outdoor programmes on foot or with an e-bike. Lightness is what we want our guests to perceive. Of course, a lot of work goes on behind the scenes to ensure a 5 star experience. We offer an experience that adapts itself to our guests’ wishes and not the other way around, something simple in a world where everything is extremely complex.

Managing to make your guests feel part of the family is an added value that comes from far away, an important legacy of signora Elly Sanoner, is that right?

Apart from the time I was at university and my practical training abroad, I spent all my childhood inside hotels.

In those years I was able to admire my grandmother’s great abilities to explain the company’s philosophy to our staff so that they would represent us in the best possible way and also to treat our guests with empathy.

Crediamo che oltre all’attenzione al dettaglio, alla ricerca dell’eccellenza in tutti i nostri processi sia importante concentrarsi su un servizio cordiale e sincero. Leggerezza è anche nell’offerta che abbiamo studiato, una formula all inclusive in cui gli ospiti possono usufruire senza pensieri di tutti i servizi del resort: a partire dai pasti principali, alle merende, dai buffet sempre allestiti, alle degustazioni libere di molte etichette di vini, fino alle attività singole o collettive con la possibilità di usufruire di programmi outdoor a piedi o con e-bike. They weren’t just a room number but a person with a name and a story behind them. These were fundamental lessons that we and our highly skilled collaborators continue to practice with pride and professionalism.

Questo rendeva i soggiorni all’Adler molto personali perché l’ospite veniva subito avvolto da un’atmosfera molto intima. Non era un semplice numero di una camera, ma una persona con un nome e una storia da ricordare.

Sono stati insegnamenti fondamentali che oggi vengono orgogliosamente e professionalmente portati avanti da noi e dai nostri validi collaboratori.

Außer in der Studienzeit und in meiner praktischen Ausbildung im Ausland habe ich meine gesamte Kindheit in Hotels verbracht. In jenen Jahren konnte ich die großen Fähigkeiten meiner Großmutter ausgiebig bewundern, die so gut darin war, unseren Mitarbeitern die Philosophie des Unternehmens zu vermitteln, damit sie unsere Vorstellung von Gastlichkeit bestmöglich repräsentierten und eine herzliche Beziehung zu unseren Gästen eingingen. Sie hatte ein unglaubliches Gedächtnis, erinnerte sich an Details, Besonderheiten der einzelnen Gäste und ihrer Geschichten. Dadurch nahmen die Aufenthalte im Adler auch eine sehr persönliche Note an, denn die Gäste tauchten unmittelbar in eine sehr intime Atmosphäre ein. Man war hier keine Zimmernummer, sondern ein Mensch mit einem Namen und einer Geschichte, an die man sich erinnern würde. Das waren grundlegende Lehren, die heute von uns und unseren geschätzten Mitarbeitern auf stolze und professionelle Weise weitergetragen werden.

Totems encompass our perception of the earth along with the mysticism of sagas and legends. They are archetypes that take us back in time.

From a trunk of wood, matter is removed, just the way Michelangelo did with marble. Material is made to submit to the will of the artist. From old beams and planks I recover material that men, nature, time or animals have given a form, an identity.

Ancient wood is marked by history and stories. It’s a living organism, it embodies birth, growth, death and resurrection…and all these things demand respect and sensitivity.

You need to communicate with the material, find out about its story.

Wood is the most important component of the Val Gardena. There would be no life without wood in Val Gardena. When I look at it, I perceive the story behind it, I look at the grain, the traces left by woodworms, holes, the signs of decay, the color. For me wood is everything: it represents my soul, my heart, my head, my story.

Wood and I are a single thing, we are bound together indissolubly.

I totem racchiudono la nostra percezione della terra oltre che il misticismo di saghe e leggende. Sono archetipi e ci portano indietro nel tempo.

Da un tronco di legno si toglie la materia, proprio come faceva Michelangelo con il marmo. La materia è sottoposta alla volontà dell’artista. Dalle vecchie assi e tavole recupero il materiale a cui uomini, natura, tempo o animali hanno già dato una forma, un’identità.

Il legno antico è segnato da storia e storie. È un organismo vivente, incarna nascita, crescita, morte e resurrezione… e tutte queste cose richiedono rispetto e sensibilità. Bisogna comunicare con la materia, accertarne la storia.

Il legno è l’elemento più importante della Val Gardena. Non ci sarebbe vita senza il legno, in Val Gardena. Quando lo guardo ne percepisco la storia, guardo le venature, le tracce dei tarli, i buchi, i segni del degrado, il colore.

Per me il legno è tutto: rappresenta la mia anima, il mio cuore, la mia testa, la mia storia. I legno e io siamo una cosa sola, siamo legati indissolubilmente.

Totems schließen in sich unsere Wahrnehmung der Erde sowie den geheimnisvollen Kern von Sagen und Legenden ein. Sie sind Archetypen und reisen mit uns zurück in die Zeit. Einem Holzstamm entnimmt man die Materie, genau wie es Michelangelo mit dem Marmor tat.

Die Materie wird dem Willen des Künstlers unterworfen. Aus alten Bohlen und Brettern arbeite ich das Material heraus, dem Menschen, die Natur, die Zeit oder Tiere bereits eine Form, eine Identität verliehen haben. Das alte Holz wird von Geschichte und Geschichten durchzogen. Es ist ein lebender Organismus, verkörpert Geburt, Wachstum, Tod und Auferstehung...all diese Dinge verlangen Achtung und Feingefühl.

Man muss mit der Materie sprechen, sich ihrer Geschichte versichern.

Holz ist das wichtigste Element des Grödner-Tals. Ohne Holz gäbe es hier kein Leben. Ich stehe vor ihm und nehme seine Geschichte wahr, sehe die Maserungen, die Spuren des Holzwurms, die Löcher, die Zeichen des Verfalls, die Farbe. Für mich ist Holz alles, es steht für meine Seele, mein Herz, meinen Geist, meine Geschichte. Das Holz und ich sind eins, wir sind unauflöslich miteinander verbunden.

Kube X emerged out of a desire to develop rectangular forms, to refine the contours of slender edged products in keeping with contemporary trends.

The range of washbasins includes various modes of installation, the sanitary ware has also been designed for smaller sized bathrooms. Selected items are available, in addition to the classic shiny white Extraglaze®, in the matt finishings Bianco and Cenere.

Vicenzo was only 13 years old when he became intrigued by the archeological fragments he and his father had hunted up. He soon became passionate about restoring them, first learning how to do this by himself and later on, ever keen to improve, acquiring the precise technique in the workshops of Cerveteri and Tarquinia. After years of apprenticeship and countless experiments, Vincenzo today is considered to be one of the last great reproducers of the ceramic treasures on display in museums. Reproduction is, in fact, one of the main sources for the study and survival of the art and culture of the past; the act of reproducing ancient artefacts makes it possible to infer the changes that manifested themselves in this ancient craft over the course of centuries and allows us not only to appreciate the importance of these documents, but to penetrate the spirit of ancient workmanship and transpose it into the contemporary world.

Vincenzo a soli 13 anni, incuriosito dai frammenti archeologici rinvenuti a caccia con il padre, si appassiona alla riproduzione degli stessi, in primis da autodidatta poi, sempre più desideroso di migliorarsi, acquisisce l’esatta tecnica nei laboratori di Cerveteri e Tarquinia. Dopo anni di gavetta ed innumerevoli esperimenti, Vincenzo oggi può essere considerato uno degli ultimi grandi riproduttori dei tesori ceramici esposti nei musei. La riproduzione è difatti una delle principali fonti per lo studio e la sopravvivenza dell’arte e della cultura passata; con questo tipo di produzione, è possibile desumere i cambiamenti nella concezione dell’antico che si sono manifestati nel corso dei secoli e ciò consente non solo di valorizzare nella giusta misura l’importanza di tali documenti, ma soprattutto di penetrare in modo quasi totale lo spirito dell’arte artigiana del passato e trasferirla alla contemporaneità.

Seit er damals mit 13 Jahren bei einer Jagdpartie mit seinem Vater auf archäologische Reste stieß, begeistert er sich für die Nachbildung derselben, zunächst als Autodidakt und später unter Verwendung der exakten Methoden in den Werkstätten von Cerveteri und Tarquinia. Nach Jahren der harten Arbeit und unzähliger Experimente, gilt Vincenzo heute als einer der letzten großen Nachbildner der in Museen ausgestellten Keramikschätze.

Die getreuliche Reproduktion ist eine der wichtigsten Quellen für das Studium und das Überleben vergangener Kunst und Kultur; mithilfe der Techniken der Reproduktion können wir Schlussfolgerungen zu Änderungen in der Auffassung des Alten im Laufe der Jahrhunderte anstellen, und damit nicht nur die Bedeutung dieser Dokumente angemessen würdigen, sondern vor allem nahezu vollständig in den Geist der Handwerkskunst der Vergangenheit schlüpfen und ihn auf die heutige Zeit übertragen.

Cenere Depending on the temperature and combustible material, a fine powder is produced that comes in a wide variety of gray tones, ranging from very dark to nearly white. For GSI this element identifies a delicately pale ceramic shade that is also highly contemporary. Cenere is light gray, fresh, brilliant and particularly suited for young people and environments.

A seconda della temperatura e della materia combustibile si origina una fine polvere di varietà tonali di grigio molto diverse, da molto scure a quasi bianche. Per GSI questo elemento identifica una tinta ceramica delicatamente pallida e fortemente contemporanea. Cenere è un grigio leggero, fresco, brillante, che ben si addice a persone e ambienti giovani.

Unterschiedliche Temperaturen und brennbare Materialien führen zu feinen Pulvern mit einer Vielzahl von Grautönen, die von sehr dunkel bis fast weiß reichen. Das Ergebnis ist ein zart blasser Keramikschirm, der auch sehr zeitgemäß ist. Cenere ist hellgrau, frisch, brillant und besonders für junge Leute und Umgebungen geeignet.

Thanks to the special shape of the ceramic parts directly in contact with water, the SaveWater system allows you to flush with just 4,5 litres of water.
