DE S C R I P T I O N : there are four unit types of varying stories and footprints. while living spaces remain more or less consistent in each unit type, the square footage of the workspaces vary to accomodate different programs. an underground parking garage, accessible from the main frontage street and

SURGE|PROOF PR O J E C T T Y P E : R E S I D E NTIAL HIGH RISE SIT E : N E W Y O R K C I T Y , N Y CO M P L E T E D A T U N I V E R SITY OF OREGON | SPRING 2015 GO A L : design a master plan that initiates a softer urban waterfront in order to prevent recurring catastrophic storm effects like hurricane sandy. further develop one of the buildings on the site to create a unique living experience that educates and informs residents both visually and experientially.

DE S C R I P T I O N : the new master plan for the waterfront is located in greenpoint, a neighborhood in brooklyn. it reinstates naturally occurring flora

and

fauna

that

once

existed

in

the

region.

though

the

plan includes a mixture of mid-rise and high-rise buildings, the focus is on one of three residential towers that overlook the east

river

and

midtown

manhattan.

also

includes

some commercial and mixed use space, planned park space, and a

TH E B U I L D I N G the building’s structure is laid out in a simple grid with a central core, with circulation surrounding it. the gap in the exterior w a l l s c r e a t e s a n H- s h a p e t h a t a l l o w s d a y l i g h t l i g h t t o e n t e r into the core, a welcome sight when exiting the elevators or s t a i r w e l l . w i t h i n t h e 2 0 ’ x 2 0’ x 20’ f r a m e w o r k , t h e r e a r e s e v e r a l options for units: a 400sf unit with a double height ceiling, a 60 0 s f u n i t w i t h a l o f t ( b e l o w ), o r a n 800 s f u n i t w i t h a f u l l t w o floors. shading panels can slide open or closed depending on the desired amount of daylight, offering a custom experience to the tenant while simultaneously creating facade movement.
