A Year Like No Other Dear Friends, Girl Scouts of the Jersey Shore began the 2019-20 fiscal year on a high note, kicking off our Women of Distinction and Community Partners Gala, launching an exciting Girl Scout Cookie season with one of our own girls featured on a box of cookies, and introducing a unique dessert challenge among area restaurants that captured the attention of media and the community.

Then the coronavirus pandemic hit, shuttering our doors, postponing events, canceling our community cookie booths, and challenging us to reinvent Girl Scouting.

In the most difficult of times, our Girl Scout family came together and with grit and creativity found new ways to deliver our programs and services and to keep our girls connected and on track to achieve their goals – in the midst of an isolating global health crisis.

Girl Scouts of the Jersey Shore CEO Eileen M. Higgins and Board Chair Teri O’Connor worked closely to lead the council through the challenges of COVID-19.

From our home offices and kitchen tables, on Facebook Live, Zoom and Google Hangouts, we achieved amazing results: • Over 100,000 boxes of Girl Scout Cookies were donated and delivered to thousands of essential workers, food banks, volunteers, and nonprofit organizations though our Cookie Relief Fund.

• 24 remarkable Girl Scouts earned the Gold Award, taking on challenges like protecting our Shore environment, delivering relief to hurricane victims in Puerto Rico and sparking interest in STEM among local children.

• Scores of virtual programs were created by our team and delivered to our 9,000 Girl Scouts and their families and to Girl Scouts around the country.

• Approximately 250 girls experienced the great outdoors at Camp Amity Acres and Camp Sacajawea. We were among only a handful of camps that opened and are proud of a 100% COVID-free summer.

• We introduced a new series of badges to equip girls with tools to lead in the crucial areas of automotive engineering, STEM career exploration, entrepreneurship, and civics, building a pipeline of future leaders.

• We were the first nonprofit organization in our area to host an in-person gala in July 2020 to celebrate local leaders and raise support for our scholarship program to ensure all girls can access our leadership programs.

It was a challenging yet rewarding time for our council as we discovered innovative ways to give our girls access to exceptional learning opportunities and make a positive in impact in our community.

We are beyond grateful for everyone’s support through the twists and turns of the pandemic.

From the bottom of our hearts, thank you to our dedicated volunteers, caring community partners and generous donors for standing by us and believing in our girls and their great potential. We are truly inspired by what we can achieve when we all work together.

Gaining Skills and Inspiration Through the years, Girl Scouts’ core values of equity, diversity and inclusion have guided our efforts to help all girls thrive. From kindergarten through high school graduation, we teach girls how to lead as they become more independent, introducing them to activities that increase their confidence in their ability to handle life’s changes. No matter what activities they choose, Girl Scouts gain the skills and inspiration to accept challenges, overcome obstacles, and take the lead.

Rediscovering the Outdoors With many activities shuttered or operating at reduced capacity, outdoor experiences have become more than just a fundamental part of the Girl Scout experience – they have become essential activities for girls’ physical and mental well-being. That’s why we’re proud we were able to provide a safe, COVID-free summer camp experience at Camp Amity Acres and Camp Sacajawea.

When girls spend quality time outdoors, they thrive physically, emotionally and intellectually. Through Girl Scouts, girls and families can rediscover the simple joys of building a campfire, canoeing across a lake or launching an arrow into a target.

In 2020, Girl Scouts of the Jersey Shore offered six weeks of COVID-free summer camp at Camp Amity Acres and Camp Sacajawea.

Each organization purchased $50,000 of Girl Scout Cookies and donated them to area charitable organizations and local food banks.

Sharing Boxes of Love

When COVID-19 struck, it immediately affected the Girl Scout Cookie Program. Girls’ cookie booth sales were suspended due to the health crisis. While disappointed, girls weren’t discouraged. In true Girl Scout fashion, they recruited their families, neighbors and friends to purchase cookies to donate to essential workers and area food banks. In the end, the community donated more than 130,000 boxes of cookies, Boxes of Love, through its Cookie Relief and Jersey Shore Cares campaigns, bringing comfort and joy to countless families and first responders throughout central New Jersey.

Making a Global Impact Imagine taking on some of the biggest challenges and problems our planet faces—and helping solve them. Junior, Cadette, Senior and Ambassador girls earn the Girl Scout Bronze, Silver and Gold Award by engaging in projects that benefit their communities. Through their actions, these girls make a sustainable impact while addressing issues they believe are important. The Girl Scout Gold Award is the pinnacle achievement.

For generations, Gold Award Girl Scouts have significantly impacted their local and global community and have continued to improve the world in their adult lives. Completion of the Gold Award weighs heavily in the Kiefer-Stevens Memorial Scholarship application. The scholarship, up to $3,000, is awarded to several graduating Girl Scouts every year.

Standing Strong Girl Scouts of the Jersey Shore stood strong during the COVID-19 crisis because of our members’ and volunteers’ contributions. These women and men selflessly gave their time, creativity and boundless energy to strengthen our council and keep girls’ spirits high. We know the challenges girls face today will impact their lives for years to come, and we are confident our programs will continue to help them become well-rounded women equipped to meet future challenges successfully.

Finding Inspiration

When challenged to identify alternative ways to recognize our honorees and raise funds to support our organization, we found inspiration in the flexibility girls displayed as they adapted in the face of uncertainty. Even as safety guidelines were regularly updated, our Gala, Golf Classic and Phenom Awards were successfully reimagined to be safe, outdoors and socially distant.
