REFLECTIONS from the Head of School

Living Our Mission As we complete the 2021-2022 school year, we are emerging from the pandemic. The virus lingers but we are learning to live with it. The Good Shepherd experience our students and community know and love is alive and well! As a part of the “Our Future Is Strong” series, Catherine Bowe, Board President, and I sat down for a short Q&A, to reflect on how the school dealt with the effects of the pandemic over the past three years. We are so proud of and grateful for our community who held each other up, encouraged one another, and rallied together as we navigated the unknown. These experiences have made us realize our strength and resilience. I am proudest of the way we lived our mission every day. We say Good Shepherd Episcopal School inspires children to learn with confidence, serve with compassion and lead with courage. We know to inspire those lofty goals in others, we must model them every day. We also know these last few years have required every ounce of our beings from every person in our community to continue modeling our mission.

CLASS OF 2022

“This school is where I found my voice and my personality.” Entering my 8th grade year came with many responsibilities. We were now the leaders of the school. We had to set an example, be role models, and most importantly, accept the fact this season was coming to a close. I refused to believe it until my acceptance letters for high school were right in front of my eyes. I learned so much from Good Shepherd. Of course I was taught reading, writing, and math, but I also learned confidence, grace, teamwork, and above all, how to be the best version of myself. This school is where I found my voice and my personality. Looking back, three things stand out to me about Good Shepherd: the welcoming community, preparing me to speak in public, and the memories I made with all of my friends and teachers. Good Shepherd always made it a priority to help us bond with one another, and I was so thankful for the opportunities to create close friendships through school traditions like COE and the house system. Thank you, Good Shepherd, for helping me find my way throughout this crazy journey. Good Shepherd’s welcoming community is one of the most appreciated aspects for every student. Not once did I have a day where I felt I did not belong. When I walked through the middle school doors, I knew I was entering a place where I felt safe and accepted, a feeling I only feel in very special places. This secure feeling is not because of the building itself, but rather the people in it. Thank you, Good Shepherd, for giving me a place to call home for the past 10 years. Good Shepherd taught me so many things, but I am particularly grateful for the ability to speak in public. GSES provided me many opportunities to step outside of my comfort zone, including speaking in front of others. Now, especially this year, it came so naturally to me that I could do more than just give a presentation. For example, just a couple of months ago, my friend and I performed a poem in front of the whole grade. Because I was so used to public speaking, I felt comfortable enough to express my emotions and fully put myself out there. We ended up winning the poetry competition and I will never regret going full out. Thank you Good Shepherd for boosting my confidence to a level I never thought I could reach.

The memories with my friends and teachers are what I will miss the most. COE over the years was a great way for me to truly get to know my classmates. There is just something about knowing we were all in the same boat, getting through the good times and the bad, together. Spending 10 days with my class in Colorado this year was one of the best things to ever happen to me. Without that trip, I would not be as close to them as I am today, and we definitely would not have had as many crazy memories and stories to recall.

Special thanks to Ms. Neuschafer (for helping me through 3rd grade), Mr. Bilecki (for being the best 6th grade advisor), Ms. Campbell (for being such a great English teacher), Mr. Pantalion (for doing private zooms with me during quarantine, just so I understood integers), and Señora Uribe (for spending her own free time preparing us for our high school placement tests). Thank you, Good Shepherd, for bringing us all together.

“I have so many memories of my experience at Good Shepherd. I will keep them all very close to my heart.” - CHARLOTTE KIMBLE CLASS OF 2022

“Ms. Schwartz was my teacher and she came to my ballet recital, wrote me letters at camp, and helped me with any friend troubles I was having.” I attended Good Shepherd for 10 years and through all those years, my teachers made school fun, helped me learn, and showed they really cared about me. In 1st grade, Ms. Schwartz was my teacher and she came to my ballet recital, wrote me letters at camp, and helped me with any friend troubles I was having. Mrs. White was my 3rd grade teacher and she helped me with math and to grow as a person. I remember when she brought her baby, Bentley, to school for the first time and he grabbed my finger and would not let go. In 6th grade, COVID hit. Even though we had to attend school from home, Ms. Campbell was so sweet and made sure we still had fun and learned what we needed. Luckily, we were able to return to campus in 7th grade. In Ms. Barnes’ advisory/ cohort we had to stay together so we would watch movies during lunch and play outside because our advisory always had so much energy.

Every year was built on the previous year so we had the skills for the next year. Third grade was our first overnight and we stayed in a house in Athens, Texas. I remember at that time, the 8th graders talking about how fun their COE was and I was always looking forward to my turn. I

am so glad even with COVID we still were able to do our 7th Grade COE trip. We went to the Smoky Mountains and it was probably my favorite year. We met hikers on the Appalachian Trail. The day before we boarded the plane home, we were able to shower in the hotel rooms and it was so fun. We played music, talked, and ate ice cream. The 8th grade COE trip was really fun, too. We spent over a week in the Rocky Mountains and I was grouped with some of my closest friends, we played cards for hours. On the third day of backpacking, we hiked to the top of the mountain. The view was so amazing and it was so cool to see where we had started our hike.

For many years, girls in my grade played soccer as the Cougar Cuties. We also played softball, volleyball, and basketball. This year, I played on the 8th grade volleyball and basketball teams, finishing in 2nd place in our division in volleyball. I have so many memories of my experience at Good Shepherd. I will keep them all very close to my heart. I met lifelong best friends that I will never lose. The teachers showed us how to have fun while learning. Sometimes we did not even realize we had learned something new. Good Shepherd helped make me the person I am today, prepared me for high school at Ursuline, and showed me how to be courageous and kind-hearted.

“When I think back on my eight years at Good Shepherd, I think of my wonderful teachers, friendships, the special community, and overall great memories.” - WILLIAM RAGGIO CLASS OF 2022

When I think back on my eight years at Good Shepherd, I think of my wonderful teachers, friendships, the special community, and overall great memories.

“I had come from a large public elementary school, and the smaller classes and feel of Good Shepherd were so welcoming. I immediately loved it!” My first year at GSES was in 1st grade. I had come from a large public elementary school, and the smaller classes and feel of Good Shepherd were so welcoming. I immediately loved it! I will always remember my lower school experience, from the state fair project in 3rd grade to the wax museum in 4th grade. My 3rd grade teacher, Mrs. White, was my favorite teacher in lower school because she made learning fun and was always patient, encouraging, and positive. Chapel services with Chaplain Rhonda were also a memorable part of lower school. She gave us the best lessons on life and how to treat others.

advisor. I also want to specifically thank the Learning Lab teachers, Ms. Raney and Mrs. Bell-Macher. The past four years with them gave me the tools to overcome certain challenges, strengthened my organization and time management skills, and made me a better student. They also helped my confidence with test-taking and writing. I feel prepared for high school largely because of them. COE was also one of the highlights of my Good Shepherd experience. My favorite trip was in 8th grade because we spent 10 days backpacking and camping in the mountains of Colorado. There were definitely times when I wanted to be home and sleep in my own bed, but I will always remember the fun times spent with my friends and being in one of my favorite places.

While I am excited to be moving on to high school and looking forward to new adventures and experiences, I will miss Good Shepherd, the close community, my teachers, and my friends. Attending Good Shepherd helped prepare me to be the best student and person I can be, and I am grateful to be a part of the Good Shepherd family.

Even though COVID affected a large part of my middle school experience, in some ways, it made our grade and classmates even closer. I am thankful for the strong friendships I have made at Good Shepherd and hope they will last a lifetime. I also had many wonderful teachers in middle school, but would like to especially thank Mr. Lampl for inspiring me to want to learn Spanish fluently one day and also for being such a great 6th grade

“The teachers were loving, outgoing, and always wanted to make my day fun and exciting.” - WILLIAM WAYNE CLASS OF 2022

My time at Good Shepherd was full of memories, friends, and teachers I will never forget. This school has prepared me for anything this crazy world will ever throw at me. It was all possible because of all my outstanding teachers guiding me through everything. I distinctly remember the first day of kindergarten with Mrs. Cummings. I was at a new school and walked in feeling extremely nervous because I did not know anyone. However, a couple days went by and I already knew these were the friends and teachers I wanted around me. The teachers were loving, outgoing, and always wanted to make my day fun and exciting. One of my best memories of lower school was Chinese New Year in kindergarten. When we were eating noodles, Mrs. Cummings said, “if you bite them, it will bring you bad luck.” So, being a six-year-old and taking everything very literally, I nervously swallowed the noodles whole so nothing bad would happen to me. One of my other great memories was the 4th grade Chili Cook-off with Mrs. Johnson. I was in a group with Holden, Creede, Marit, and McKinley. Our team name was the “Cooking Cowboys”, and we served a white chili that ended up winning the whole thing! We were extremely excited and could not believe it! Finally, I just want to thank all of my amazing lower school teachers who really prepared me for my years as a middle schooler.

“I loved having a big responsibility and having a say in something that would affect the whole middle school.” Moving into middle school, I made so many more amazing memories. Starting in 5th grade, I remember walking into my first math class with Mrs. Mason and she had Lizzy, her bearded dragon, on her shoulder. I thought it was so crazy she just let her sit there, and then she even let Lizzy walk around the classroom! In 7th grade with Mrs. Coats, even though we had to stay in the same room with the same people all year due to COVID, I became really good friends with all of the kids in my advisory. Finally, in 8th grade, I really loved math and Spanish more than ever. Mrs. Clapp and Señora Uribe

made it so much fun for me to learn and I really enjoyed being pushed and challenged. Also this year, I loved being one of the house leaders for House of Earth. I loved having a big responsibility and having a say in something that would affect the whole middle school.

“In the end, I want to say thank you to all of the amazing faculty and staff at Good Shepherd for making me feel a part of the GSES community for the last nine years.” Finally, COE was one of the most amazing parts of my nine years at Good Shepherd. I would always look forward to the next exciting adventure I would get to embark on with all of my friends. Out of all of the trips, 8th grade was my favorite with 4th grade as a very close second. I loved 8th grade for many reasons. First, it is the longest trip and you get to go with the whole grade. Secondly, there was such a wide variety of activities at base camp for people with different interests. Finally, while backpacking, the views of the beautiful Colorado Rockies were stunning. One day, while backpacking to our next destination, we ran into a mother moose and her two babies. Luckily, our guide spotted them from far away so we stayed back until they moved on. Even though it was a pretty nerve-wracking situation, it was truly amazing to be so close to such a big and powerful animal. In the end, I want to say thank you to all of the amazing faculty and staff at Good Shepherd for making me feel a part of the GSES community for the last nine years. I also want to give a special thanks to Mr. Armando, Mr. David, and Ms. Hortencia for always making sure our school is a clean learning environment! I will miss this school so much, but I am looking forward to what lies ahead in the coming years.

“...a brand-new Class Ambassador program, in-person alumni events, early alumni engagement, and a return presence on social media.” As we reflect on the 2021-2022 school year, we were excited to bring back many of our Good Shepherd traditions as well as move forward with projects put on hold due to the pandemic. One important project is the GSES Alumni Committee’s efforts to bring alumni back to our community. “It is something we have always wanted to do and have been trying to do,” GSES Alumni Committee Chair Catherine Groen said. “It just needed to be the right time and the right place.”

The committee started in the fall of 2019, yet in early 2020, had to pause as the COVID-19 pandemic took hold of the world. Before this, everything was heading in the right direction.

“We had several alumni on campus to speak,” Groen said. “We helped host a tour of the school for one class reunion that a class put together themselves. We were promoting our alumni through social media and were on our way.” With in-person events not happening, the committee was limited in what it could do. Two virtual events took place during the summer of 2020, but that was all that was feasible. “At the time, we did not have a huge community to really invite to these events,” Groen said. Fast forward two years and what has come to fruition is a brand new Class Ambassador program, in-person alumni events, early alumni engagement, and a return presence on social media. In March, the committee hosted its first-ever alumni event at Topgolf with 13 alums in attendance.

“We had several people RSVP even if it was a no,” Groen said. “The fact they were engaging and looking at it and communicating, I think, was such a positive step and shift.”

Today, the committee has 10 members. Groen would like three to five additional members to join and is hoping the new Class Ambassador program will assist in obtaining larger numbers. “We want to build structure, consistency, solidify early engagement, and create a committee that does not lose its shape when people transition off,” Groen said. Committee members are expected to serve three-year terms and next year, Groen, a 1989 Good Shepherd graduate, will hand over chair reins to David Harrel, a current GSES parent, who attended Good Shepherd for part of his grade school education. “David Harrel is an enthusiastic committee member,” Groen said. “He’s very passionate about Good Shepherd and had a positive experience here.” Groen is proud of the progress occurring during her time at the helm, but also looks forward to what is still to come. Creating an online alumni directory for job networking, hosting a yearly holiday party, developing an application process for prospective committee members, and receiving class updates from Class Ambassadors are all goals the committee would like to accomplish down the road. Yet what is most essential and will never change is the importance of alumni always feeling a level of connectedness with Good Shepherd Episcopal School. “We have some people who are doing amazing things,” Groen said. “Oftentimes, I hear, ‘oh, you are just a middle school. You are competing with the high schools for alum attention,’ and I would reply, I don’t think so. I think we have such a niche area where we are nurturing and caring about students at such an impactful time in their lives. I do not see us as competing with the high schools and colleges. I think we are in a world of our own.” A world continuing to blossom each and every year through students – who eventually become alumni – modeling the school mission of learning with confidence, serving with compassion, and leading with courage.
