REFLECTIONS from the Head of School

D r. J u l i e M c L e o d “We did it! But, we sure are tired.” This was the sentiment of our faculty and staff, and many parents, as we concluded the school year. We were thrilled to be able to remain open for students to attend on-campus during the entire school year, which was one of our goals as we began this unusual year. As we completed our school year, the weekly meditation from The Rev. Dan Heischman, Executive Director of the National Association of Episcopal Schools, resonated with us, and I am sharing it with you here, with permission: THE REAR-VIEW MIRROR The Rev. Daniel R. Heischman, D.D., Executive Director A head of school, recently and candidly, remarked to me, “I really look forward to seeing this school year in the rear-view mirror.” At the time, I think this head was eager to put this school year to rest, a year in which even the most routine aspects of school life have taken on added complications. To be sure, nothing has been easy this past year. As we close out this year of all years, what do we see in that rear-view mirror? To be sure, there is exhaustion. Minus a real summer vacation for so many of our faculty, staff, and administrators in 2020—and on top of the extra precautions, the shifts in plans, and intensified anxiety—there has been little time to step back and pause, activities so necessary for a school being true to its very nature. Still, our schools have done extraordinary things. In that rear-view mirror, we see teachers who have gone to remarkable lengths to make learning accessible and safe for students. Faculty and staff have stretched themselves beyond what they might have thought to be their limits. We have seen school leaders graciously balance conflicting expectations. So, too, we have seen boards of trustees roll up their sleeves and contribute in unexpected ways to the health and stability of their institutions. Reflecting on the role of Episcopal schools in his diocese, the Rt. Rev. Peter Eaton of Southeast Florida recently observed that, “It has warmed the cockles of this bishop’s heart to see all our schools functioning not in desperation, but in hope; not stopped in their tracks by uncertainty, but taking bold steps in new directions; not giving up in moments of difficulty, but persevering to find the answers.” In that rear-view mirror, we see schools that have been courageous, unflagging, and resourceful. Through it all, as [American writer Margaret] Wheatley observes, we seek to be “islands of sanity” in turbulent and dehumanizing times. The struggle to be places where people work well together is at the heart of what it means to be an Episcopal school, and from the vantage point of the rear-view mirror we can take pride in what has been accomplished. God has been at work, and we have been strengthened through this struggle. As we conclude the year, I ask of all of you: what do you see in that rear-view mirror? I hope you join me in celebrating our faculty, staff, students, and current parents as we successfully navigated this school year. This summer is sweeter for us than any in our memory!

I am especially thankful for this school and for it fully preparing me as a person to enter high school confidently. - RILEY GRANT, CLASS OF 2021

There is so much about Good Shepherd Episcopal School that I enjoyed. So many experiences and amazing lessons taught by its incredible faculty. The family that Good Shepherd has helped build is amazing. The teachers have helped me and all my friends, everyone showing each other how best to grow. My sixth grade social studies teacher, Mr. Bilecki, is one of the many teachers who really helped me grow. My eighth grade math teacher, Mrs. Clapp, also did an amazing job with teaching us all the algebra and geometry that we would need to be ready for anything our high school math teachers throw at us. Finally, my seventh and eighth grade Spanish teacher, Señora Uribe, also taught me and my classmates a lot, although a few of them may never admit it.

I definitely would never be in the place I am today without Good Shepherd. Mr. Bilecki is one of my teachers who helped me through my entire middle school career. One of my favorite parts of his class was a project on Egypt and the dead. This project involved us being in groups and taking these pieces of chicken, and wrapping them up. Later that day, a few of our groups decided to take our chicken down to recess and “bury it,” just for the sake of it! As we grew to be eighth graders, one of our favorite traditions was to go into his classroom every Thursday to say, “hi” and get one mint. It was always a great way to start the morning and just to relax, no matter what the day would throw at us. Because of COVID, our seventh grade year was cut a little bit shorter than it should have been. Luckily, last year, I had an amazing set of teachers who were all willing to face COVID head on. As we entered eighth grade, a lot of things began to clear up, even if that meant they looked very different. My advisor,

Mrs. Clapp, is one of those amazing teachers. She made sure that we would be fully prepared as freshmen for whatever our new schools would throw at us. One of my personal favorite parts of her class was just algebra in general. Usually, she posted lessons on Schoology (a website we used for

The next day was then used as a day for worksheets and any questions we had about math. She was an amazing advisor, as well, and always made sure that she was mixing a little bit of fun into our learning. Last but not least, during both my seventh and eighth grade years at Good Shepherd, I had Señora Uribe as my Spanish teacher. Oftentimes, her class was at just the right learning pace, and we got quite a bit done. Sometime around March, some slight changes were made to our schedules. Every Wednesday for our flex classes, our whole class had extra Spanish time. Then she also decided that, for any of the students in the advanced class, we would meet her Tuesdays through Thursdays for extra class time in the gym. Although it was only 45 minutes, I learned so much in that part of the year. Thanks to these teachers, and many more, I was able to enjoy some of the best years of my life. I definitely would never be in the place I am today without Good Shepherd. There were many years that I, along with other students, struggled with fitting in and learning to the best of my ability. My teachers and current friends have all helped me grow as a person and intellectually reach my best. I am especially thankful for this school and for it fully preparing me as a person to enter high school confidently.

I can’t even explain how much every single teacher means to me, because they were the ones setting me up for success in middle school, even when I doubted myself or failed. - MARTY JONES, CLASS OF 2021

I knew I would miss Good Shepherd, but I never thought I would miss it this much. I think about how much fun I had every single day, and I will always think back on those days when I didn’t want to leave. When I first came to the school in PreK, I had no idea what to think, but that quickly changed. From learning how to be the PreK weather reporter with Mrs. Jackson, all the way up to the quadratic formula with Mrs. Clapp, and Macbeth with Mr. Burgess, I have learned so much. I vividly remember my first days of first grade. I walked in the building, and it was like a parade, for me, and me only. Everyone was so loving and caring, and from that moment on, I was a part of the Good Shepherd family. My most memorable moments of lower school were the Underground Railroad, the States Fair, and the potato project. Throughout all of lower school, my teachers were always there for me. I can’t even explain how much every single teacher means to me, because they were the ones setting me up for success in middle school, even when I doubted myself or failed. I also remember my first day of middle school like it was yesterday. My very first class was social studies with Father Gardner. Every single year, I loved coming to school, and I enjoyed learning new things and also having fun. It might sound weird, but my friends were a big reason why I succeeded throughout middle school, because we encouraged each other to do our best and supported each other during rough times. I’m so grateful for my Good Shepherd friends, and I know that they will be lifelong friends. I can’t reflect on my time at Good Shepherd without mentioning COE. COE was definitely one of my favorite parts of every year. I learned so many life lessons on each trip, like learning how to set up a tent and how to survive out in nature. My favorite COE trip was probably in fourth grade. Hiking and

swimming in the Paluxy River with all of my friends was such a blast. However, my most memorable COE moment was on our recent trip to the Great Smoky Mountain National Park. We had arrived at our last stop of the backpacking trip, and the first thing we did was to go swimming in the river. While we were drying off, we spotted a black bear crossing the river and heading toward our campsite. We tried to make lots of noise to scare the bear off, but he was very persistent and kept coming back. Our guides made the smart decision to go back to the campsite from the night before. It was very exciting, but it was a good reminder that we were in the bear’s home and that we should respect it. I’m really thankful to Ms. Vawter and Mrs. Scott for organizing such a great trip. It was a really memorable way to end our 8th grade year. One of my favorite parts of Good Shepherd was school sports. Even though we did not get to participate in school sports this year, I am so thankful that I was able to in 7th grade. In football, I had the time of my life. We would practice for hours, and get sweaty and hot, but it paid off because we had so much fun in the end. I will never forget how much fun I had playing 7th grade football. In the winter, when I played basketball, I also had a blast. My teammates and I became so close, and it helped us to get better. We ended up making it to the semi-finals, and we had so much fun doing it. Thank you, Coach Blount and Coach Thompson, and all of my other coaches. I learned so much from you and really loved representing Good Shepherd. I will always remember my time at Good Shepherd, from the very first second I walked in the building to the last seconds of the 8th grade graduation dance. I am going to miss my teachers, my friends, everything. Part of me doesn’t want to leave, but I know that this school has prepared me for high school and set me up for success. I will never forget it. Thank you, Good Shepherd!

by Jenn Makins Class of 1994 Jenn holds a Master of Arts in International Science & Technology Policy from The George Washington University and a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology from Texas A&M University. In 2018 she received a patent (USPO 10,083,492 B2) for her work developing a social educational online platform for Parish’s MAKERplay hospital service program.

Good Shepherd is the foundation of my educational and professional career... When you visit the 10,000 sq. ft. Design Den makerspace at Parish Episcopal School, you will likely find Jenn Makins tinkering with one of the many machines or coaching the school’s award-winning high school NASA Human Exploration Rover Challenge team. This team is currently the only high school rover team in Texas. As Director of STEM Education, she is the architect and steward of the school’s nationally-recognized STEM program. Her sixteen years as a STEM educator has led to impacts at both the national and regional levels. While at NASA, Jenn led the development of engineering challenges and teacher professional development workshops.

“I had no idea at the time, but those trips to Dinosaur Valley State Park and Big Bend would inspire and launch my teaching career.” Jenn notes, “Good Shepherd is the foundation of my educational and professional career.” It is a bold statement and perhaps a bit of a sentimental one, but true,” she adds. The Makins family joined Good Shepherd in the fall of 1990, when Jenn was in fifth grade and her younger sister Lizzy was in first. The campus was so very different, just a quaint collection of four red-bricked buildings plus Kelsoe Cottage tucked in off Midway Road behind the church. Trinity Hall was yet to be built. “Before we had official sports teams, Coach Boyd and Mrs. Clayton would take groups of middle school students down the street to ESD for intramural volleyball tournaments and track meets. We were so excited when we did well because here we were a scrappy group of kids who played volleyball in the grass behind East Hall.” Middle School is a host of fond memories for Jenn. She remembers Mrs. Petranek and Mrs. Carlyle poised outside their doors at the end of Stanard Hall chatting and greeting students as they came to class. The loud thump of Mr. Burgess shutting his door, often followed by his renowned, “take everything off your desk except a pen or a pencil,” signifying a pop quiz would promptly commence. “I found my ‘voice’ in the Orff Ensemble and learned confidence and independence during the school’s first few Classroom of the Earth (COE) trips.” “I had no idea at the time, but those COE trips to Dinosaur Valley State Park and Big Bend would inspire and launch my teaching career.” After attending high school at Bishop Lynch, Jenn returned to Good Shepherd to complete the internship requirement of her Kinesiology degree from Texas A & M. “My emphasis was on outdoor education. Even though a lot of the students went to Outward Bound or National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS), I knew I wanted something that had more of an educational component coupled with the adventure. So, in the Fall of 2003 Jenn started the year as Good Shepherd’s outdoor education intern. Halfway through the year, there was an opening in the P.E. department, which enabled Jenn to join the faculty full time. The following year, Jenn had the opportunity to work in the Lower School science program after it was re-booted as a stand-alone class. “I am so grateful to Bob Kohler, Sandy Pollard, and Liz Young. They took a chance on a rookie teacher, gave me some room to make mistakes, and challenged me to build a quality student-centered program.” My four years teaching at Good Shepherd are some of the fondest of my career. The families are amazing, the faculty is world class and the students are fun, caring, and eager to learn. Jenn recently asked her parents what made them choose Good Shepherd from the many options available. Her mom’s answer was quite simple, “The school shared our family values, and we wanted a place where the teachers would really see and know our children.”

In 2019 the American Association for the Advancement of Science in collaboration with Dallas’ Lyda Hill Philanthropies announced the IF/THEN Ambassador Program. The program brings together 125 women from a variety of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) careers to serve as high-profile role models for middle school girls. Jenn is one of the ten ambassadors from North Texas. To elevate STEM careers, the IF/THEN Collection and Exhibit were launched. The Collection is available free online for non-commercial use to students, families, teachers and museums and houses thousands of assets including photos and videos of the ambassadors telling their STEM stories. The exhibit contains 121 life-sized 3D printed statues of the ambassadors and is on display at NorthPark Center in the greenspace and hall under the movie theater, from now until the end of October. “If Then” exhibit.
