REFLECTIONS from the Head of School

D r. J u l i e M c L e o d Welcome to the 2021-22 Winter Good News Magazine! This year, I have chosen “Belonging” to be the school’s theme. There is substantial research that shows students who feel a sense of belonging actually learn more deeply and also have improved well-being. As we begin to emerge from the pandemic, a sense of well-being and a feeling we are part of something bigger than ourselves are important factors as we re-learn to be in community with each other. Our Episcopal Identity also calls us to belong as we celebrate being children of God! As we began this school year, we certainly did not expect to still be mired in the pandemic. However, our community has responded beautifully, supporting the school in all the challenging decisions that must be made and providing their children with a strong parent-school partnership. One of our favorite changes this school year is that we have been able to welcome our current parents back to campus! Last school year, we had to strictly limit the people on campus in order to provide our students with a healthy, on-campus experience. With vaccinations for adults widely available, we have been able to return to many beloved experiences. We began the school year with our Back to School Fiesta and also enjoyed a fun and joyful Carnival! As I write this, we are preparing for the Angel Tree/Celebration of Giving and the third and fourth grade Christmas Pageant! These celebrations of community have taken on extra meaning for us this year as we look forward to each and every time we are able to gather! Our celebrations of belonging and community help us to focus on what is truly important as we emerge from the pandemic. We remain grateful for our extended community, which also includes alums, parents of alums, grandparents, and special friends! We hope that if you are in the area, you will stop by Good Shepherd! You still belong!

This summer, we lost our dear friend and colleague, Tim Burgess, to his battle with cancer. He had made the difficult decision to retire from Good Shepherd, as his illness would not allow him to return to teach our students in the fall. Tim joined Good Shepherd in 1989, spending his life teaching 8th grade English, theatre, speech, and coaching our middle school students. For 32 years, Tim’s dedication of his time, talent, and energy influenced, inspired, and supported his students and all those around him. He will be sorely missed by faculty, staff, students, families, alumni, and all members of the Good Shepherd community. Tim’s adult life was committed to making a difference in the lives of the future. He continued that legacy by donating his body to U.T. Southwestern Cancer Research. Hundreds of Good Shepherd students attribute their successes in high school and beyond to Tim’s teaching, mentoring, and guidance. He had

a true love of learning and wanted his students to excel in every way - inside and outside of the classroom. He was a Classroom of the Earth veteran, having traveled countless miles over his career at Good Shepherd. The master of the lunchroom, Tim ruled with a kind but iron fist. His surprise belt inspections struck fear in the hearts of all middle school boys, and the consequences for being out of uniform were immediate and memorable. He recruited many middle school students to assist him with lunchroom clean-up, and his “volunteers” were always eager to finish the job in record time.

He was passionate about many things in his life and was dedicated to his life partner, Becky Rambin, and their beloved dog, Strut. Tim and Becky built the theatre program at Good Shepherd and worked on each production with enthusiasm and commitment. Together, they succeeded in expanding students’ love and appreciation of the theatre and challenged their students to explore their characters. “We both had a passion for theatre, but we complimented each other,” Rambin said. “We both had our strengths to add to the production and how it turned out.” Rambin acknowledged she was scared of Burgess when she first arrived at Good Shepherd for the 1995-96 school year. “He didn’t smile,” Rambin recalled. “It took me a whole year to venture and ask him a question.” Her fear was erased, however, as soon as she entered Burgess’ classroom.

“The expectations were there,” Rambin said. “As a student, he would have made me sit in the front of the class, front row, pay attention, take notes and do well. He was a very good man.” Mr. B’s commitment to teaching is best summed up in his own words from 1991. “I like teaching because it is truly a chance to touch the future. GSES is going and growing. This means the school is constantly moving forward and changing in an effort to meet the needs of future citizens in twenty-first century society.” Good Shepherd will miss Mr. Burgess tremendously. His commitment to the school and his students will never be forgotten by those who were blessed to work alongside him. Last year at GSES, 2021

“Tim Burgess was the quintessential English teacher. He had high expectations and desired the best for each student in his class. He loved his theater program and sharing his passion. Mr. Burgess made a positive impact in the lives of so many students. I will miss Tim and his dry sense of humor. Good Shepherd has lost a talented teacher!” Alumni parent and Board of Trustees member, John Kukla, was incredibly generous and thoughtful in creating a memorial video to share with our faculty and staff. We wanted to share this QR code with you so you could celebrate Tim’s life with us, too.

TAYLOR JENNINGS IRVIN 1988 - 2021

This past spring, we lost our friend and colleague, Taylor Jennings Irvin, to her long and difficult battle with a brain tumor. Taylor taught mathematics and coached our middle school students before transitioning last year into the most recent role of a Mathematics Instructional Specialist. Taylor was a Texan at heart, graduating from Fort Worth Country Day School, as well as Texas Christian University where she received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees. She coached several field hockey and soccer teams and played for the Blue Diamonds, a Dallas women’s soccer team. Taylor was a dedicated and compassionate teacher, always striving to bring the best from her students and athletes, whether in the classroom or on the playing field. She had a passion for teaching math to middle schoolers and continued to tutor many former students as they progressed to learn advanced mathematical concepts. Prior to joining Good Shepherd in 2016, she taught at Lakehill Preparatory School and Southlake-Carroll Dawson Middle School.

“The school has been a part of our family for a quarter of a century!” Good Shepherd has been our home away from home for the past 26 years. It all started in 1995 when I was looking for a school for my first born son, Hunter. I had been lucky enough to go to a private American school in England during my high school years. It was an experience I knew I wanted for my own children someday. My sister, Kelly McCaddon, was a member of the church and had just enrolled her daughter, Kate, in the Parents’ Day Out program. After just my first time on the Good Shepherd campus, I immediately knew this was the place I had been looking for, the warm welcoming community and strong academic background reminded me so much of my experience in England. I enrolled Hunter in the PDO program and our journey began.

Shortly after Hunter started at PDO, I joined the community as a PDO teacher with my sister. It was a great way to supplement our income and make friends as a young mother. Twenty years and three kids later, I was still there. A testament to what a fantastic community Good Shepherd is. All four of my kids - Hunter ‘09, Sam ‘11, David ‘14, and Martha ‘17, as well as my niece Kate McCaddon ‘08 and nephew Will McCaddon ‘12 attended Good Shepherd all the way from PDO to 8th grade. It was such a unique experience having my kids and their cousins being able to share so much of their formative years. Their grandparents were there for every Grandparent’s Day and 8th grade graduation. Mom even won the prize for most grandchildren during one Grandparent’s Day celebration.

Time moved on, the kids all graduated, but the Good Shepherd influence lived on in their lives. I moved to another school shortly after Martha graduated 8th grade, but being away did not last long. I soon found myself back on campus working extended day and teaching summer camps. Two of my kids also found their way back to campus. Martha and David spent summers working camps and David even helped out during the COVID-19 year as a teacher’s aid and COE leader. To see your children flourish and be respected as a colleague by those who once taught them makes a mom proud. So much of the Good Shepherd values still show in my kids’ everyday lives. The COE program had such a profound impact on my kids and their love for the outdoors.

Hunter graduated high school from Dallas Lutheran. He is living in Dallas working as a real estate photographer. Many of his clients are former GSES parents. He has a diligent work ethic, something I never thought was possible when he was a student. I think this is due to so much he learned as a student at GSES. When he is not photographing houses, he is hiking and photographing nature. He’s visited volcanoes in Guatemala and the vast beauty of Big Bend National Park. Most recently, he’s enjoyed honing his rock climbing skills that started during 5th grade COE. Sam graduated from Jesuit College Preparatory School of Dallas, and then went to an art school in Santa Fe. He later transferred to Pacific Northwest College of the Arts in Portland, Oregon, where he earned his BFA in sculpting. He is living in Vancouver, Washington, working for a company converting vans into camping vans. Sam’s love of art began while hanging out with Ms. Malik’s art advisory during lunch. He attributes much of his writing abilities to Mr. Burgess and the strong grammar skills he taught. I had a conversation with Sam his freshman year in college and asked him how his freshman English class was. He replied to me, “Mom, most of these kids don’t even know proper grammar.” Thank you, Mr. B!

David went on to graduate from W.T. White High School and decided to go the community college route until COVID-19 hit. Currently, he is living in Dallas figuring out what he wants to do next. He enjoyed coming back to Good Shepherd to help out during the 2020-21 school year and thoroughly enjoyed getting to go on last year’s COE trips . Martha graduated from Bishop Lynch and is a freshman at Texas Tech University. She is pursuing a degree in teaching, which she attributes to the influence of her wonderful teachers at GSES. She hopes to spend more summers at Good Shepherd working summer camps and eventually one day return as a teacher. It was not always easy sending four kids through private school, but I am so happy we did. It is evident in the amazing young adults my kids have become, how much of an influence Good Shepherd had on them. The school has been a part of our family for a quarter of a century! It is incredible to see the school’s growth, yet throughout, the small loving community feeling has never left. I continue to be blessed to be a part of this community.

If you have visited the Good Shepherd Episcopal School campus at some point this year, you’ve likely noticed some changes. Projects scheduled to happen in 2020 were put on hold while we worked through the pandemic. With the school re-opening our doors to parents and visitors this year, the projects were back on track.

“During the pandemic, we made many changes and adjustments to our classroom spaces so we could welcome all students back on campus and maintain six feet of social distancing,” Head of School, Julie McLeod said. “The school became more utilitarian than beautiful and we are very excited to shift back to inspiring spaces, bringing joy to all who are on our campus!” Early in the summer, Dr. McLeod, alongside members of the school’s admissions and business office, walked the campus to note what needed attention. Once determined, Toni Luciano, Candie Esch, and Kevin Vaughn were tasked to execute the updates.

As you walk our campus, here are a few changes to look for: furnishings for Nichols Hall, updated way-finding signs, Good Shepherd logo on walls in Nichols and the Commons, house banners in middle school, and welcome signage for Gordon Nichols Hall, Clara Hoffman Middle School, and Gloria Ryba Lower School. It was important to make those visiting our campus feel welcomed, and what proved to be most essential was having the updated areas completed before the school’s first prospective parent visit in October. “First impressions meaningfully impact how prospective families feel about the school. Our updated, polished, and welcoming space signifies Good Shepherd is a warm and welcoming school, and our care for the environment in which our students and their families spend their time,” Jennifer Meyers, Director of Admission stated. We commend the hardworking Good Shepherd staff members for their efforts and contributions in completing the beautification process!

We also want to thank our GSPO! With money they raised during the pandemic year, an outdoor lounge was created for faculty and staff to enjoy a break or meet after school. “As we all recall, the 2020 school year was filled with uncertainty: for our teachers, parents and students, and for the GSPO,” GSPO parent Tiffany Wesley said. “We typically raise money for the school by hosting parties, events, and socials; however, without our normal activities, we had to get creative. One thing that we knew for sure is that every dollar we raised, we wanted to spend on our teachers and staff to show them how important they are to us parents. The new balcony - complete with seating and dining space - was designed as a quiet escape for our faculty to relax, unwind, meet together, and celebrate a job well done. “Of all the fundraisers I’ve been a part of, this one was by far the most special.”
