Thank you to the Adult Recognitions Task Force for their hard work reviewing and recommending the following nominations. Members of the Task Force for 2024 year are Karen Bartlett, Valerie King, Evelyn Freeze, Nancy Smith, Beth Steelmon, Brittany James and GSCP2P staff liaison, Kim Stikeleather.

The Appreciation Award recognizes a registered Girl Scout adult who has delivered outstanding service to at least one geographic area or program delivery audience.

Christa Badstein Service Unit 157- Alamance

Christa, a dedicated volunteer in the Alamance County Service Unit for 10 years, has served in numerous pivotal roles within the organization. As the Service Unit Secretary, she meticulously records meeting minutes and contributes significantly to the service unit’s plans. Christa also plays a crucial part in organizing and executing various events such as the Service Unit Camporee, coordinating World Thinking Day celebrations and assisting with recruitment efforts, leading events across different counties.

Betsy Baugess Service Unit 157- Alamance

Betsy has been an outstanding volunteer with the Alamance County Service Unit for 16 years, holding various positions including troop leader, Troop Cookie Manager, Troop First Aider and Troop Camp License Holder. In addition to her troop responsibilities, Betsy has been an integral part of the Service Unit Team, contributing to the success of their programs like the Service Unit Camporee, Cookie Rally and World Thinking Day. Betsy’s commitment to the girls extends beyond her troop as she consistently provides support and encouragement to all Girl Scouts, as well as shares her extensive knowledge of Girl Scout traditions and programs, ensuring that every girl has the opportunity to thrive and succeed.

Sheria Belton Service Unit 125- Gaston

Sheria has been a dedicated volunteer with the Gaston County Service Unit for over a decade, serving as a Girl Scout troop volunteer for 10 years and on the Service Unit Team for over five years. She has held several roles including Service Unit Banking Specialist, Service Unit Fall Product Specialist and Service Unit Coach and Mentor. Sheria demonstrates unwavering commitment and expertise in all she does, providing essential training, guidance and support to troop leaders and volunteers. Sheria’s infectious enthusiasm for initiatives like the Fall Product Program not only motivate others, but also ensures the success of these endeavors.

Brandy Jo Brehm Service Unit 157- Alamance

Brandy Jo’s dedication and service to the Alamance County Service Unit over the past decade has left an indelible mark on everyone involved. As a Service Unit Event Coordinator and troop leader, she has tirelessly contributed to various events and activities, leaving a lasting impact on the girls, fellow leaders and the wider community. Through her leadership, encouragement and expertise, Brandy Jo has empowered countless girls to embrace new challenges with confidence and resilience and her commitment to fostering a supportive environment and promoting growth opportunities has benefited the girls and fellow leaders who have found inspiration and guidance in her mentorship.

Susie Davis

Service Unit 126- Lincoln

Susie has been an active volunteer for the Lincoln County Service Unit for 27 years where she has exemplified extraordinary dedication and leadership. Her involvement spans decades, during which she’s led multiple troops and managed service units with exceptional commitment and passion. Susie’s tireless efforts have benefited the girls in her troops and enriched the community through various service projects and initiatives. Her impact resonates profoundly with those who have had the privilege of knowing and working with her.

Casey Dill Service Unit 157- Alamance

Casey has been a dedicated volunteer for the Alamance County Service Unit for 17 years. She has held multiple vital roles within the organization, including serving as the Service Unit Event Coordinator, a member of the Service Unit Camporee Committee and working on events and initiatives, including the Cookie Rally, World Thinking Day and planning for the STEM program. Casey’s commitment to ensuring the safety of all participants, particularly regarding food allergies, is exemplary. Her leadership shines through in her dedication to empowering girls, fostering their growth and ensuring inclusivity in all activities, and her tireless efforts and innovative problem-solving skills make her an invaluable asset to the Girl Scout community.

Patricia Henry Service Unit 125- Gaston

Patty has been a dedicated volunteer in the Gaston County Service Unit for eight years, serving in various roles including troop leader, Service Unit Coach and Mentor, Service Unit Event Planner and Service Unit Camporee team member. Additionally, she volunteers to teach proper flag ceremonies and has been an active participant in roundtable discussions, offering guidance on Girl Scout traditions and badge activities. Patty leads meaningful ceremonies, like the Leader Rededication and Investiture, and is also instrumental in membership retention efforts, providing support and ideas to new and returning leaders.

Heidi Huinker Service Unit 157- Alamance

Heidi has dedicated two years of her time as a volunteer for the Alamance County Service Unit, demonstrating commitment to the Girl Scout organization and exceptional leadership in her roles as troop leader, Troop Cookie Manager and Service Unit event planner. Heidi’s passion for environmental sustainability shines through her efforts, as she not only educates Girl Scouts on ecofriendly practices, but also shares her knowledge with fellow leaders. Her invaluable contributions to planning and organizing events- like the Service Unit Camporeereflect her outstanding teamwork and organizational skills, and her enthusiasm and support for Girl Scouts at all levels make her an exemplary volunteer and a cherished friend within the Girl Scout community.

Cheri Jones Service Unit 157- Alamance

Cheri has been a dedicated volunteer for six years with the Alamance County Service Unit, demonstrating exceptional commitment and enthusiasm in various roles. As the Event Coordinator, Cheri’s contributions have been invaluable as she played a pivotal role in the success of the Service Unit Camporee, planning classes, meals and activities, including designing t-shirts and crafting a songbook. Moreover, Cheri’s proactive involvement extends beyond specific events as she actively participates in service unit meetings, offering innovative ideas for engaging activities and upcoming events. Her collaborative spirit is evident in her efforts to reach out to other troops for idea-sharing and resource collaboration, fostering a sense of community within the service unit.

Kim Monahan Service Unit 157- Alamance

Kim has been an invaluable volunteer with the Alamance County Service Unit for eight years, showcasing her dedication to the Girl Scouts through various roles including troop leader, Troop First Aider and Troop Cookie Manager. Her commitment extends beyond troop activities, as she actively participates with the Camporee Committee significantly contributing to its success, from brainstorming activities to executing logistics. Her expertise in STEM subjects enriches the service unit’s programming, as seen in her coordination of a DNA station for the STEAM program. Kim’s willingness to assist in any capacity, from teaching fire starter lessons to kitchen duties during events, reflects her selfless spirit.

Rachel Onyskin Service Unit 136- Iredell

Rachel has been an invaluable asset to the Mooresville Service Unit for nine years, excelling in various leadership roles. As a troop leader and Adult Learning Specialist and her latest role- as Co-Service Unit Specialist- Rachel’s impact has been profound, spearheading the introduction of three new events, including a Cookie Kick-Off to boost sales and community visibility and a program for Girl Scout Seniors to become Girl Scout Gold Award ready. Rachel’s enthusiasm and commitment shine through in her efforts to enhance training opportunities, increase participation in service unit-wide events and foster community engagement, leaving a lasting and positive impact on the Mooresville Service Unit.

Christine Schrader Service Unit 134- Catawba

Christine, a dedicated volunteer with Catawba County Service Unit for 19 years, embodies the essence of service and leadership within the organization. Over the past seven years, Christine has served in various roles including troop leader, Service Unit Cookie Manager, Service Unit Fall Product Manager and Service Unit Media Specialist. Her commitment extends beyond her troop as she actively engages in community outreach and recruitment efforts. Notably, Christine has mentored numerous adults toward troop leadership and facilitated the achievement of the Girl Scout Gold Award for several girls. Additionally, her involvement in organizing events, such as the Maiden Christmas Parade and the Old Soldier’s Reunion Parade, demonstrates her passion for promoting Girl Scouts within the community.

Brandy Shew Service Unit 133- Wilkes

Brandy has been an exceptional volunteer in Wilkes County for five years, and her dedication and tireless efforts as the Service Unit Specialist have truly transformed her Girl Scout community. She goes above and beyond in every aspect of her role, from meticulously organizing events to ensuring every troop leader feels supported and recognized. Brandy’s initiative in establishing communication channels like the BAND group and her unwavering positivity have fostered a sense of unity among troops and volunteers. Her commitment to the girls’ development is evident in her planning of activities, bridging ceremonies and community service projects, and her boundless enthusiasm and leadership have elevated the local Girl Scout experience, inspiring everyone to reach for excellence and sisterhood.

Amanda Shoop Service Unit 157- Alamance

Amanda has been an active volunteer for the Alamance County Service Unit for more than 14 years. With five years of experience as the Service Unit Specialist, she excels not only in coordinating events and managing the service unit’s Facebook page, but also in keeping service unit meetings focused and productive. She actively participates in planning committees, such as the Camporee Planning Committee, where her contributions span from logistical support to fostering a cohesive team dynamic. Amanda’s multifaceted involvement, support and genuine friendship embodies the spirit of Girl Scouts.

Isaac Stewart Service Unit 134- Catawba

Isaac has been a dedicated volunteer for the Catawba Service Unit for six years, actively participating in various capacities to support his daughter’s troop. Despite not holding an official leadership role, he is consistently available to assist with troop activities and is regarded as an integral part of the Troop Leadership Team. Isaac’s passion for science has enriched troop experiences, as seen in his guidance of STEM activities tailored for Girl Scout Seniors and Ambassadors, filling a gap in age-appropriate programming. His commitment extends beyond his daughter’s troop, as evidenced by his involvement in organizing childcare programs and directing themed activities at council-sponsored events like Leaderfest. Isaac’s enthusiasm for Girl Scouting and his ability to engage and inspire both girls and adults make him a valuable asset to the organization.

The Honor Award recognizes a registered Girl Scout adult who has delivered outstanding service and contributes to the achievement of the council’s goals in two or more geographic areas.

Heather Beddard Service Unit 143/144- Forsyth

Heather’s dedication to the Girl Scouts is unmatched, evident in her nine years of volunteer service. As a troop leader and Service Unit Fall Product Manager for Service Unit 144 in Forsyth County, her commitment extends far beyond her troop as she has played a pivotal role in mentoring and revitalizing a neighboring service unit, ensuring its integration and success within the broader Girl Scout community. From organizing inclusive events, like archery sessions, to facilitating cross-unit collaborations for activities like the Pinewood Derby and World Thinking Day, Heather fosters an environment of camaraderie and exemplifies the true spirit of Girl Scout sisterhood. Heather’s leadership and compassion make her a deserving candidate for recognition and honor within the Girl Scouts Carolinas Peaks to Piedmont community.

Aimee Durkos Service Unit 143/144- Forsyth

Aimee’s seven years of volunteer service have been marked by an extraordinary dedication to her Girl Scout troop and the broader community. Holding multiple leadership roles within Girl Scout Troop 2830 and serving as a mentor and organizer for two different service units, Aimee’s impact is far-reaching. Her initiatives, such as the Living History Day at Bethabara and the Harry Potter-themed Camporee, have provided countless girls with unique learning experiences and unforgettable memories. Aimee’s expertise in STEM education has enriched the Girl Scout program, while her willingness to mentor leaders and resolve conflicts demonstrates her commitment to the well-being of the entire community. Through her tireless efforts, Aimee has undoubtedly been a beacon of inspiration and support for all those involved in Girl Scouting.

Jim Fox Service Unit 143/144- Randolph

Jim has been an invaluable volunteer at Keyauwee Program Center for nearly a decade, embodying the spirit of dedication and service. Despite not holding a formal position, his contributions are immeasurable. From storing and researching old tents, to facilitating camp expansions, to meticulously maintaining camp roads and trails, Jim’s impact is evident in every corner of Keyauwee and Circle C Equestrian Center. Whether it’s organizing volunteer days, acquiring materials for essential projects or providing expertise on various aspects of camp life, Jim’s selflessness and kindness shine through in all he does. He goes above and beyond, not for recognition, but to ensure the safety and comfort of all who visit the properties. Jim’s commitment to the Girl Scouts and his community exemplifies the true essence of volunteerism and deserves the utmost recognition and appreciation.

Karmel Massey Service Unit 157- Alamance

Karmel is an extraordinary individual whose dedication to Girl Scouts spans over two decades, showcasing her commitment to service and mentorship. Holding various positions, including Adult Recognition Specialist and Leaderee committee member, Karmel has left an indelible mark on her service unit. Her contributions range from meticulous event planning to hands-on involvement, whether it’s coordinating camp activities or spearheading recruitment efforts. Karmel’s involvement extends beyond the service unit, as she actively participates in council events and community initiatives. Her selflessness and expertise shine through her ability to adapt activities to suit different age groups, ensuring inclusivity and engagement. Karmel’s impact transcends organizational roles- she’s a true example of someone who nurtures courage, confidence and character in every Girl Scout she encounters.

Ashley Rink Service Unit 134- Catawba

Ashley has dedicated eight years to Girl Scouting as a troop leader, demonstrating exceptional commitment and leadership and guiding Girl Scouts with enthusiasm and positivity. Ashley’s involvement extends beyond troop activities as she holds positions in the service unit including Adult Learning Specialist and Media Specialist. Her efforts to promote diversity, equity and inclusion within the Girl Scout community are commendable, as is her active participation in service unit meetings and annual planning sessions. Notably, Ashley’s dedication to the council’s Gold Award Advisory Committee, where she both mentors girls and serves as a committee member, underscores her commitment to empowering young girls to achieve their highest potential. Through her tireless efforts and passion for the Girl Scout program, Ashley exemplifies the spirit of service and leadership.

Patricia Travis

Service Unit 124- Gaston

Patty, a dedicated volunteer for 13 years, has served in numerous roles within the Girl Scout organization, including troop leader, Girl Scout Cookie and Fall Product Manager, Events Coordinator and STEM Facilitator. Her contributions extend beyond troop activities to include organizing events like the Veterans Day Parade and Wreaths Across America, where she ensures girls have opportunities to interact with veterans and learn about their service.

Patty’s commitment to Girl Scouting and her passion for empowering girls is evident in her work as a Robotics Coach, event organizer and mentor. She continually seeks to enhance the Girl Scout experience by providing diverse programming, promoting STEM education and fostering a sense of community and respect for veterans, and her dedication and leadership make her a valuable asset to the Girl Scout organization.

Katelynn Utter

Service Unit 155- Rockingham

Katelynn has been a valuable volunteer for GSCP2P for seven years, holding various positions including troop leader, Troop Fall Product Manager, Service Unit Cookie Specialist, Service Unit Fall Product Specialist, Leaderee committee member and Leaderfest committee member. Her dedication and proactive approach have been evident throughout her tenure. Katelynn’s efforts extend beyond her immediate responsibilities as she plays a key role in fostering collaboration between service units, organizing multi-service unit outdoor experiences and planning crossservice unit events. Her supportive nature and willingness to assist others have earned her admiration and gratitude from fellow volunteers, exemplifying the essence of the Girl Scout Law.

Carla Walters Service Unit 124- Gaston

Carla has been an outstanding volunteer for Girl Scouts for seven years, actively serving in various roles within the Gaston County Service Unit. From her dedication as a troop leader to her contributions as Service Unit Secretary, Fall Product Assistant and Event Specialist, Carla’s commitment shines through. Her enthusiasm for Girl Scouts is infectious, as evidenced by her involvement in organizing events like the Journey-in-a-Day program and Cupcake Wars. In addition, Carla has served on council-wide committees including the Annual Meeting Planning Committee and the Faith-Based Awards Task Committee. Her selfless service benefits the girls and leaders of her service unit and the entire council. It’s clear that Carla’s passion for Girl Scouts and dedication to the Movement make her a deserving candidate for recognition.

Chris Williamson Service Unit 129- Burke

Chris has dedicated over a decade of his life to volunteering with the Girl Scouts, serving in various roles including Troop Leader, Boating and First Aid Specialist, Outdoor Survival Expert and Service Unit Cookie Manager. His commitment extends beyond individual troop activities, as he actively participates in larger events like camporees, skating outings, murder mysteries and Thinking Day celebrations that benefit numerous troops. Chris’s leadership shines through his management of the cookie program for two different service units, ensuring smooth operations and increased sales year after year. He goes the extra mile by assisting with camp maintenance, leading training events and sharing his passion for camping with new troops. Chris’s tireless efforts and dedication make him a valuable asset to the Girl Scout community.

The Thanks Badge Award recognizes a registered Girl Scout adult who has delivered outstanding service and contributes to the entire council or entire Girl Scout Movement.

Susan Coe Service Unit 112- Swain

Susan has dedicated an impressive 40 years to volunteering with the Girl Scouts, holding several significant roles within the organization. As an Adult Learning Facilitator, she tirelessly facilitates outdoor classes, not only within our council, but also across other councils, promoting the goal of getting girls outside. With over 15 years of experience as a Trainer, she plays a pivotal role in the Leaderfest Committee, aiding in the planning and execution of various sessions and enhancing leadership skills among troop leaders. Her involvement extends further as a member of the Trainfest Committee, where she contributes to designing and delivering essential classes. Susan’s commitment to enriching the Girl Scout experience through her expertise and dedication is truly commendable.

Virginia Himmelheber Service Unit 117- Buncombe

Virginia has dedicated 20 years of her life to volunteering with the Girl Scouts, holding various positions and roles within the organization. She has served as a Girl Scout troop leader, member of the Archives Committee, an Adult Learning Facilitator and Faith Committee member. Her commitment to supporting fellow leaders and Girl Scouts is evident through her proactive initiatives, such as organizing outdoor training sessions, arranging displays and archive items for events and securing venues for fundraising activities. Virginia has stepped up to fulfill critical roles, demonstrating her adaptability and dedication, and she actively contributes to council-wide initiatives, serving on committees, facilitating trainings and advocating for Girl Scout ideals. Virginia’s unwavering dedication and willingness to go above and beyond make her an invaluable asset to the Girl Scout community, enriching the experiences of leaders and girls alike.

Ginger Rousey Service Unit 134- Catawba

Ginger’s dedication to the Girl Scout movement spans an impressive 30 years, during which she has served in various leadership capacities. As a troop leader for over two decades, Ginger’s commitment to providing quality experiences for her troop is evident. Beyond troop leadership, Ginger has actively contributed to the broader Girl Scout community, serving on the Catawba County Service Unit Team and participating in numerous councilwide events and initiatives. Her involvement ranges from organizing recruitment activities, coordinating service unit events like World Thinking Day and STEM programming to facilitating training sessions at Leaderfest and with the Girl Scouts and Faith program. Ginger’s passion for Girl Scouting shines through her efforts to empower girls, instilling in them the values of leadership, goal setting and community service.

The Thanks Badge II Award recognizes a registered Girl Scout adult who has continued to deliver outstanding service and contributes to the entire council or entire Girl Scout Movement after receiving the Thanks I Award.

Patti Hubbard Service Unit 118- Henderson

Patti is an exceptional individual whose dedication and commitment to Girl Scouts Carolinas Peaks to Piedmont has greatly benefited the entire council. With over 30 years of volunteer experience, she has made significant contributions in various roles, including as an Adult Learning Facilitator, Trainfest Committee member, Silver and Gold Award Advisor and Chair of the Western North Carolina Trefoil Guild. Through her roles, Patti has positively impacted adult volunteers, troop leaders and girls alike. Her efforts in developing training materials, facilitating courses and mentoring others demonstrate her unwavering dedication, and her contributions extend beyond her local service area, as she actively participates in council-wide initiatives including Trainfest, ensuring volunteers have access to training and resources to support girls in their outdoor experiences and beyond.

The GSCP2P Juliette Gordon Low Lifetime Achievement Award honors individuals with 25 or more years of service to our council whose continuous and outstanding dedication goes beyond expectations of the position(s) held. These individuals exemplify the Girl Scout Promise and Law in his/ her daily life, demonstrate respect for the spirit of the Movement, share the love of Girl Scouting through interaction with girls, adults, the council and community and are dedicated to the principles of Juliette Gordon Low’s Girl Scout movement.

Freda Mayse Service Unit 123- Cleveland

Freda’s dedication to the Girl Scout Movement for over 65 years has touched so many lives. From leading troops and hosting Girl Scout events, including her long-standing efforts to celebrate and promote Girl Scouting at the Cleveland County Fair, Freda’s love for this organization is apparent. Throughout her years of participation, Freda assumed roles of increasing responsibility within the outdoor experience realm. As a counselor at Camp Rotary and an advocate for cross-camp collaborations, as well as assistant camp director to eventually taking the helm as camp director at Camp Golden Valley, Freda’s passion for empowering girls through the outdoors is unmistakable. Freda also does not shy away from leadership. She formed The Pioneers, an adult group dedicated to help the council in various ways- including updating volunteer tenure and maintaining the grounds at the council- and, most recently, Freda served on the Board of Directors for Girl Scouts Carolinas Peaks to Piedmont. She truly is a sister to every Girl Scout and supports all girls and adults to make the world a better place.
