2023 Cookie Program Parent Newsletter

Hi Girl Scout Parents/Guardians, Thank you for allowing your Girl Scout the opportunity to participate in our annual Girl Scout Cookie Program the largest girl-led business in the world! We are grateful for the support and assistance you will provide your Girl Scout and her troop leadership team throughout the cookie program.

Although the sale component of the cookie program is a means to fund your Girl Scout’s troop activities, other components of the program are meant to help her develop a strong sense of self, a positive outlook, ethical values and a way to make the world a better place. Through participation, our goal is that she will learn these five skills: goal setting, decision making, business ethics, money management and people skills.

This guide was prepared to help you navigate the 2023 Girl Scout Cookie Program. Upon review, you will notice new and exciting rewards and experience opportunities for girls – we heard you and listened to your feedback!

We have several updates to our 2023 Girl Scout Cookie Program and below are the highlights. More details can be found on the following pages and on our council’s website at www.girlscoutsp2p.org under the Cookies tab.

• Introducing the Raspberry Rally, a new online only, direct-ship cookie.

• Trefoils - Both licensed bakers will now use the same name for the Shortbread cookie.

• New council-wide service project, Cookies for a Cause, along with “I Care!” challenges for your Girl Scout to participate in throughout the program!

• Modifications to cookie program scholarships.

• Revamped Cookie Tycoon Program.

• Increased experience opportunities in our rewards plan.

The Raspberry Rally will be available online for direct-ship only purchases. Girls are encouraged to have signage or cards with their personal or troop QR code at cookie booths or attached to their order card so customers can easily retrieve their link to purchase these cookies so that it credits them and/or their troop.

Ways to Participate What is great about the annual Girl Scout Cookie Program is that, as a family, you can customize your Girl Scout’s experience. You can participate with the troop in all the ways below or pick what is right for you and your Girl Scout.

DIRECT SALES Girls have cookies in hand and ask customers to make a purchase.

This is the preferred method of selling since customers tend to impulse buy. This also saves time by alleviating multiple trips to and from a customer’s home. Direct sales can include door-to-door walkabouts and workplace sales.

ORDER TAKING WITH AN ORDER CARD Girls can use their order cards to visit friends, family and local neighborhoods, with adult supervision and approval, and take preorders for cookies. Girls should not collect money for any order prior to delivery (unless they order online through Smart Cookies). Girls then give their completed order cards to their Troop Cookie Manager by their designated deadline.

ONLINE THROUGH SMART COOKIES Through an e-mail invitation, social media post or a QR code, customers can order cookies online, pay for cookies online and, if elected, have cookies shipped directly to them (customer pays shipping cost).

Cookie Program Responsibility Parents/guardians are financially responsible for all the cookies signed out from their Girl Scout’s troop. Some troops allow cookies to be returned or exchanged, while others do not. Check with your troop volunteer to find your troop’s return and exchange policy before accepting cookies. If your troop does allow cookies to be returned or exchanged, you must adhere to the troop return and exchange deadlines or you will be responsible for full payment.

ALWAYS GET A RECEIPT Cookies and money change hands frequently throughout the cookie program. Any time cookies or money changes hands, a receipt should always be issued. If you do not receive one from your Troop Cookie Manager, ask for one.

COOKIE BOOTHS Cookie booths are an activity where girls set up a booth in hightraffic areas such as grocery stores, malls or sporting events to market their cookies to customers. This is also a direct sales method.

Introducing Solo Sales We want to give every Girl Scout an opportunity to participate in our Girl Scout Cookie Program, regardless if her troop participates or not, so this year we are introducing Solo Sales.

Solo Sales is open to girls: • In troops who have not met all the criteria to begin their membership year

• In troops where the troop (or troop volunteer) has elected not to participate in the cookie program

• In troops who cannot find or do not have a volunteer to serve as Troop Cookie Manager

• Who are newly registered and want to participate, but have not yet been assigned to a troop

Smart Cookies and Online Sales Smart Cookies, the online selling platform for our Girl Scout Cookie Program, is one of the most important tools in your daughter’s cookie sale. In Smart Cookies, girls can accept online orders from customers for girl delivery and direct ship, accept credit card payments from customers, record their sales goal and track their progress to that goal and retrieve their personal QR code and URL to share for sales that link back to her Smart Cookies account.

To get started using Smart Cookies, girls need to simply click the unique link in a Smart Cookies registration e-mail that will be launched on or around December 12. (Registration e-mails will be launched to newly registered girls weekly throughout the cookie program.)

Our council will offer subsidized (reduced rate) shipping to customers who purchase at least nine packages of cookies for direct ship.

Follow the Rules!

Safety Tips

If girls and/or troops are not selling in accordance with established rules and guidelines, girls and/or troops can be penalized by having one or more of the following consequences applied*: • Removal of the highest reward level earned

BE SURE YOUR GIRL SCOUT UNDERSTANDS AND FOLLOWS THESE SAFETY RULES:

• No future booth or direct sales • Reduction in troop proceeds • Reduction in packages sold for girl and/or troop • Forfeiture of girl and/or troop proceeds/rewards Examples of rule violations include: • Taking orders or selling before December 20, 2022 • Selling cookies for the incorrect price • Selling cookies outside of authorized areas • Selling cookies beyond their “Use Before” date • Conducting a troop-secured booth without permission of the property owner or business manager • Conducting a council or service unit-secured booth without the booth being secured in Smart Cookies • Girls delivering or selling cookies alone • Booth sales with the incorrect girl/adult ratio • Inappropriate behavior at a cookie booth • Failure to pay for cookies and submit funds as stated

by GSCP2P and/or your Troop Cookie Manager *Decisions on consequences to apply are decided by GSCP2P’s Product Program Director or GSCP2P’S leadership team. The severity of the consequence imposed will be based on the rules and regulations broken, impact to others, safety and if one or multiple rules were broken.

Let your customers know how to contact you for repeat purchases!

Ask your troop volunteer for a packet of Post-it notes to let customers know they missed the opportunity to purchase cookies from you or complete your information on one of the cookie box labels and stick it to a package of cookies. Girls can also obtain cookie program business cards to distribute to potential customers.

Show you’re a Girl Scout.

Wear the Girl Scout membership pin, vest, sash or other Girl Scout clothing to identify yourself as a Girl Scout.

Buddy up.

Always use the buddy system. It’s not just safe, it’s fun.

Partner with adults.

Adults must accompany Girl Scout Daisies, Brownies and Juniors when they’re taking orders, selling cookies or delivering cookies.

Girls must be supervised by an adult when selling door-to-door and must never sell alone.

Adults must be present at all times during cookie booth sales.

Do not enter any homes or vehicles.

Never enter someone’s home or vehicle when you’re selling or making deliveries. Avoid going into alleys or selling to people in vehicles, except at designated drive-thru cookie booths.

Sell in the daytime.

Sell only during daylight hours, unless accompanied by an adult.

Protect privacy.

Girls’ names and home addresses should never be given to customers. Protect customers’ privacy by not sharing their information except when necessary.

Be safe on the road.

Always follow safe pedestrian practices, especially when crossing at intersections or walking along roadways. Be aware of traffic when unloading products and passengers from vehicles.

Be safe online.

Girls must have their parent/guardians’ permission to participate in all online activities and must read and agree to the GSUSA Internet Safety Pledge before conducting any online activities. Additionally, to participate online using Smart Cookies, girls must read and abide by the Girl Scout Digital Cookie Pledge, and parents/guardians must read and abide by the Digital Cookie Terms and Conditions for Parents/Guardians.

Cookie Tycoon Program Girl Scouts can take their cookie business to a whole new level – by empowering a business partner at their favorite local business to sell at their storefront (provided the below programming requirements are met and activities recorded in Google Classroom). If a Girl Scout has a personal contact with a local sole proprietorship business, she may set up two remotely managed unattended booths at those places of business, provided the booths are not a large business or business that would normally hold a troop attended cookie booth.

Booth locations must be preapproved prior to being set up and activities are to be completed in Google Classroom – see more details in the flyer named Cookie Tycoon Program in the cookie section of our council website.

Reach More Customers During Walk-About Week Reach out to more of your neighbors during Walk-About Week and help your Girl Scout increase her sales. Each year, we hear community members saying, “If a girl had just knocked on my door, I would have bought cookies!” Girls are encouraged to take a parent or a responsible adult on a walk around the neighborhood from January 14-22 to share some quality time while working on their goals and marketing skills. In addition to walking about their neighborhood, girls can also hold an “open house” and invite friends and family to their home or private function.

Girls should wear their uniform or be identifiable as a Girl Scout.

Girls can earn the WalkAbout patch by selling 30 packages during WalkAbout week. Walmart gift cards, to be used toward an ice cream party for the troop, will be awarded to two troops. To win a gift card, girls should decorate a wagon or anything that can carry cookies. Then, take a picture and e-mail it to gsstories@girlscoutsp2p.org

by January 25. The girls with the most eyeappealing and creative “vehicle” will win a gift card for their troop. Photos will be used to promote the Girl Scout Cookie Program.

Please send only one photo per girl.

• Activity 1 - Create a Business Card Create your own business cards. Leave the cards you create at your display for easy access. Be creative! Explore options with color and pictures.

• Activity 2 - Proceeds Plan Tell us about your troop’s plans for the proceeds they will earn through participation in the Girl Scout Cookie Program.

Service projects, camping, travel...the options are endless!

• Activity 3 - Create a Business Display Create your own Cookie Tycoon display at your business location.

• Activity 4 - Understand the Business Get to know your business partner. Ask them about their business. For example, what products or services do they sell or provide? What is their busiest day of the week? Ask your business partner why they decided to support you as a Cookie Tycoon. Tell us about this conversation.

After completion of activities, if all requirements are met, girls will earn the Goal Getter patch.

Troop Proceeds and Girl Rewards All Girl Scout troops earn proceeds for participating in the Girl Scout Cookie Program. Proceed amounts can vary depending on whether or not the girls in a troop elect to receive all offered individual girl rewards or if the troop prefers higher proceeds in lieu of most girl rewards (and has a minimum 105 package per girl average selling).

ALL girls (regardless of troop proceeds plan selected) who sell at least 24 packages receive a themed patch. Other rewards that can be earned by all girls (regardless of the troop proceeds plan selected) are the achievement bars, all patches and pins, Cookies for a Cause rewards, a beach towel or one of the experiences at the 410 package sales level, Girl Scout membership dues, G.E.O. event invitation and pin, top seller awards and entries in age-appropriate drawings. All girls are also eligible to win a top seller scholarship.

All troops earn at least $.75 per package. Troops that have a PGA selling of at least 105 packages can opt out of receiving most individual girl rewards and experiences to receive an extra $.05 per package sold. Troops that meet certain criteria also receive additional proceeds.

Most rewards are cumulative, which means girls will earn the reward for the highest level achieved and each reward at the lower levels of achievement, with the exception of the achievement bar, which is earned for the highest level of sales. Girls whose troop chooses higher proceeds forfeit most girl rewards other than those specifically listed in the second paragraph above for ALL girls and noted on the rewards flyer.

Rewards are non-transferrable. In the event a merchandise reward item is discontinued, Cookie Dough at that sales level will be awarded. If cookie dough is not offered, an alternate reward of equal value will be substituted.

Cookies for a Cause In correlation with our Girl Scout Cookie Program, Girl Scouts Carolinas Peaks to Piedmont (GSCP2P) is launching a new council-wide service project and gift of caring program called Cookies for a Cause. Our goal is to support a local “cause” each year, in addition to our U.S. military (active and retired) serving in the United States and abroad. Each year, a different “cause” agency will be selected. This year, we will be working with Meals on Wheels to provide packages of cookies to the senior citizens who receive Meals on Wheels services in the 40 counties we serve.

How can customers support our service project?

It’s simple! When girls are making their sales pitch to a potential customer, they simply ask each customer if they would like to purchase an extra package to support our service project, Cookies for a Cause. Each girl should be prepared to explain the service project and information can be found on our council website.

How will the cookies be distributed?

The troop in each county that receives the most support for Cookies for a Cause will be invited to deliver the cookies to their local Meals on Wheels agency. Upon delivery, each participating Meals on Wheels agency has been asked to provide a short educational opportunity to the delivering troop, explaining the logistics behind Meals on Wheels and a tour of their distribution site.

GSCP2P will continue to deliver the cookies sold for our U.S. military to NC Packs 4 Patriots in Ayden, NC.

“I Care!” Campaign Challenges We want to hear from girls why they are supporting this new service project! We have four challenges planned asking girls to share their personal stories. The challenges are: Challenge 1: January 22-28 Let us know why you are supporting Cookies for a Cause.

Challenge 2: January 29-February 4 Create and design your best cookie booth sale poster, with specifics on Cookies for a Cause.

Challenge 3: February 5-11 Give us your sales pitch!

Challenge 4: February 12-18 Let the public know what you’ve learned through participation and what your troop plans to do with the funds they earn.

What do the winners of the “I Care!” campaign receive?

The “I Care!” campaign winner of each challenge will receive a 40-package credit of cookies to the Cookies for a Cause service project.

These credits will be applied to the girl’s sales totals, her rewards and the troop’s proceeds.

2024 Cookies for a Cause Service Project Each girl in the top-selling Cookies for a Cause troop in each county and each girl in each troop that sells at least 48 packages of cookies to support Cookies for a Cause will be invited to vote for our next councilwide “cause” agency for our 2024 Girl Scout Cookie Program.

Can my troop or I distribute its own supply of cookies to the military or another organization?

GSCP2P only supports and recognizes donations to the military and other organizations distributed through the council’s Cookies for a Cause Program, in which sales/donations are recorded in Smart Cookies.

Other donations made by troops or service units to any organizations cannot be promoted and will not be counted toward girl rewards. In addition, girls and troops must report all Cookies for a Cause donations and cannot use those donations to pay for other cookie orders or undelivered cookies.

G.E.O. event registration and Product Sales information is sent through GSCP2P’s cloud-based mail system. Unsubscribing to council e-mails (such as Today’s Tips or other recurring e-mails) will block rewards information from your inbox. If you’ve unsubscribed to council e-mails or think you may have unsubscribed, send an e-mail to info@girlscoutsp2p.org and ask to resubscribe.

Cookie Dough Cookie Dough is a credit/coupon earned by girls for selling cookies and that can be redeemed for a variety of items. The credit can be used to pay for council programs, summer camp fees, GSUSA-sponsored Destinations event fees, GSUSA-sponsored getaways, council-sponsored pathway trips, purchases at council shops and camp trading posts and camp reservation fees. It can also be used to pay for 2023 GSUSA National Convention registration fees.

COOKIE DOUGH & TROOP TRIPS Girls who earn a minimum of $100 Cookie Dough can redeem it for troop-level Girl Scout programmatic and mission-related items and services, such as a Girl Scout camping trip, Girl Scout activities and Girl Scout events, to cover fees/expenses for the girl who earned it (not other members of the troop, family members or friends).

COOKIE DOUGH & THE G.E.O. EVENT Girls who sell at least 500 or more packages of cookies can redeem Cookie Dough for additional admission tickets (when purchased through GSCP2P) to the annual G.E.O. event at Emerald Pointe on June 10, 2023.

DESTINATIONS, GETAWAYS, COOKIE DOUGH AND DAISY DOLLARS Girls love to travel, and you can use your Cookie Dough to get you there. Girl Scout Destinations are the ultimate adventure for Girl Scout Cadettes, Seniors and Ambassadors! With different trips every year, there is something amazing for everyone to experience. Girls apply as an individual and, if selected, make friends from all over the world as they travel with Girl Scouts from different states. Girl Scout Getaways are short travel programs designed specifically for Girl Scout troops.

USING COOKIE DOUGH AND DAISY DOLLARS Cookie Dough and Daisy Dollars can be used to pay for GSUSAsponsored Destinations and GSUSA-sponsored Getaway event fees, and girls selected for a GSUSA-sponsored Destinations trip can redeem their Cookie Dough at two times face value. Daisy Dollars can be used for GSUSA-sponsored Destinations and GSUSA-sponsored Getaways, but it can be redeemed at face value only and prior to the expiration date.

WHAT ARE DAISY DOLLARS? Daisy Dollars are a credit earned

by Individually Registered Girls who participate in the Girl Scout Cookie Program.

BANKING AND TRANSFERRING COOKIE DOUGH AND DAISY DOLLARS Girls applying for GSUSA-sponsored Destinations are allowed to accumulate Cookie Dough from GSCP2P’s cookie program over a consecutive two-year period. For example, if a girl is selected for a 2023 Destinations, she can use her 2022 Cookie Dough (if it was banked) and her 2023 Cookie Dough. A girl must bank her Cookie Dough prior to its expiration date if she wishes to credit her GSUSA-sponsored Destinations account. To bank Cookie Dough, the parent/guardian should notify the Director of Product Program in writing that the Girl Scout wants to bank her Cookie Dough for GSUSA-sponsored Destinations credit. The notification must be signed by the parent/guardian. Once received by the Director of Product Program, a confirmation will be sent to the girl stating the amount banked and a copy of these guidelines. Girls using Cookie Dough for a GSUSAsponsored Destinations trip can use a sister’s Cookie Dough at face value only, but that Cookie Dough cannot be banked. Daisy Dollars are non-transferrable.

What Girls Learn Through Participation in the Cookie Program GOAL SETTING Girls set cookie sales goals and, with their troop, create a plan to reach them. This matters because girls need to know how to set and reach goals to succeed in school, on the job and in life.

DECISION MAKING Girls decide where and when to sell cookies, how to market their sale and what to do with their earnings. This matters because girls must make many decisions, big and small, in their lives.

Learning this skill helps them to make good ones.

MONEY MANAGEMENT Girls develop a budget, take cookie orders and handle customers’ money. This matters because girls need to know how to handle money - from their lunch money to their allowance to their future paycheck.

PEOPLE SKILLS Girls learn how to talk (and listen) to their customers, as well as how to work as a team with other girls. This matters because it helps them to do better with group projects, sports teams, on the playground and later at work.

BUSINESS ETHICS Girls act honestly and responsibly during every step of the cookie program. This matters because employers want to hire ethical employees – and the world needs ethical leaders.

Earn Scholarships for Higher Education $20,500 in scholarships will be awarded as part of our Girl Scout Cookie Program.

Each Girl Scout Cadette, Senior and Ambassador who sells 500 or more packages will have her name entered in a drawing to win a scholarship. For every additional 500 packages sold, her name will be entered in the drawing again. If, however, a girl or her troop has a balance due to the council beyond May 1, they will not be allowed entry into our scholarship drawings, be eligible for a top three seller scholarship or be recognized as a top seller.

We will draw for the following scholarships.

Drawings will be held and announced at our G.E.O. event on June 10, 2023.

• FIVE $1,000 scholarships for Cadettes • FIVE $2,000 scholarships for Seniors/Ambassadors

Cumulative Rewards for All Girls FOR ALL GIRLS NO MATTER WHAT PROCEEDS PLAN IS CHOSEN BY THE TROOP. Cookies for a Cause Support our council-wide service project! Turn in donations for 16 packages and receive a special patch. Girls who support the project by selling 28 packages will receive a unique GSCP2P camp toboggan. Set your sales goal high and sell 56 packages to receive a keepsake coin that commemorates the first year of Cookies for a Cause, sure to be a Girl Scout collector’s piece. Sell 65 packages to earn the insulated lunch bag.

Themed Patch 24 Packages

Cookie Crossover Patch Girls who sent 18 e-mails through the M2 System during the Fall Product Program and sell 300 packages of cookies will receive a cookie crossover personalized avatar patch.

Patches earned will be sent directly to the earning girl from the factory so be sure to make any updates to your avatar and address changes in the M2 System prior to the end of the cookie program.

G.E.O. Pin & Event Invitation Become a G.E.O. – Girls Empowering Opportunity.

In addition to an admission ticket for both you and an adult chaperone to attend our cookie recognition event at Wet ‘n Wild on June 10, each girl who sells 500 packages will receive a collectible pin. Girl Scout Daisies, Brownies and Juniors will be entered in a drawing for awesome door prizes. Girl Scout Cadettes, Seniors and Ambassadors will be entered in scholarship drawings.

Walk-About Patch Each girl who sells 30 packages during Walk-About Week will earn a patch.

Achievement Bar 50 Packages

GSCP2P Cookie Program Glow-in-the-Dark Pin Yes! It glows in the dark! Each girl who reaches our council sales goal of 330 packages will receive this unique pin.

Select an Experience or Themed Beach Towel All girls who sell 410 packages can elect to receive one of the following experiences or a beach towel:

Comes in 50 and then 100 package increments, one bar earned for the sales level achieved.

Two admission tickets to Kaleideum North, Winston Salem A science museum offering interactive exhibits and an environmental park with animal habitats and gardens.

2023-2024 Girl Scout Membership Dues All girls who sell 625 packages will be automatically registered for the 2023-24 membership year.

Council-Wide Top Sellers* Girls who sell at least 2,000 packages will also be recognized at our G.E.O. recognition event. In addition, our top 10 council sellers will be presented with a special medallion.

Cookie Program FAQs

How The Cookie Crumbles

Do all councils charge the same price for cookies?

No. Each individual Girl Scout council sets the selling price for cookies.

All of the proceeds from the Girl Scout Cookie Program remain in our council area. Working together to provide the Girl Scout Leadership Experience to girls in our area, this revenue benefits our girls through their troops, their service units and our council.

Can we accept checks from customers?

Depends. The troop leadership decides whether or not the troop will accept personal checks. Cash is always the preferred method of payment.

Who can sell Girl Scout Cookies?

Registered Girl Scouts who have turned in a signed Permission Form and do not have any outstanding debt to the council may sell Girl Scout Cookies.

Participation in the program is optional.

Can cookies be returned?

Once a parent/guardian signs for cookies, they cannot return them and are responsible for paying for them. However, troops and parents need to work together to aid in getting any remaining cookies sold to help the troop meet its overall program goal.

When should customers pay for cookies?

Customers should pay when they receive the cookies, except when ordering online. Online orders do allow for prepayment of cookies via credit card.



Cookies cost $5 per package.

Dating back to the 70s, Isenhower Transfer and Storage transported Girl Scout Cookies to the troops of western North Carolina. With the transition of ownership and merger with Tru-Pak Moving Systems, Inc. taking place in the 80s, the Siegel family has continued to serve the Girl Scouts and grow the business to what is now known as Tru-Pak Moving Systems, Inc. At Tru-Pak, moving is all in the family. John and Patricia Siegel founded Tru-Pak Moving Systems, Inc. with one straight truck and a dream. By the time their children - Johnny, Allyson and Miriam - joined the family business, Tru-Pak’s trucks were moving families, freight and furniture across the 48 contiguous United States.

Even though Tru-Pak has evolved into a moving industry leader, the Siegel’s still prefer to give their customers the personal touch.

From the age of 16, John Siegel served as the president of Tru-Pak Moving Systems and was intimately involved in daily operations until his retirement. John’s daughter Allyson has since taken over the helm and is committed to providing the same family touch that has been in place since the early 1960s. With continued growth of 120 trucks and providing over 4,000 moves a year, Tru-Pak remains a company dedicated to customer service.
