Wereceived17nominationsforthenewCOSMFacultyResearchCouncil. Theleadershiphasbeen reviewingthenominations,andIexpecttoannouncethefullmembershipsoon Asareminder,the goaloftheCouncilistoadvisethedeanandleadershiponissuesrelatedtoourgrowingresearch enterpriseaswellasassistwiththedevelopmentofprogramsandinitiativesthatsupportCOSM’s roleintheGeorgiaSouthernSoaringtoResearchExcellenceeffortsthatareunderway.

UndergraduateresearchisanintegralpartofourgrowthandenhancementplansforCOSMresearch efforts. WehavealsoinitiatedconversationswiththeCOSMOfficeofUndergraduateResearch Committeetoexpandthescopeofthatgrouptohelpthecollegetakeamorestrategicapproachto supportingandgrowingtheresearchexperiencesforourundergraduatestudents. Whilewehavesomestateofartfacilitiesinsomeofthesebuildings,thereareanumberofthemthat arehavingsomeissues.Iamworkingcloselywithfacilitiesandthedepartmentchairstodevelop actionplanstobeginaddressingasmanyoftheissuesaspossible Itwilltaketime,butIhopeyou willbegintoseeprogressonsomeoftheseissuesverysoon.Ifyouarehavingbuildingissues,please contactmedirectlyoryourdepartmentchairtomakesureweareawareofthem.Someofthemare relativelyeasytoaddress,butwecan’tworkonsolutionsunlessweareawareofthem.

TheGeorgiaArmyNationalGuard recognizedtwooutstandingfriends oftheEagleBattalionthispast Friday.Mr.TerryHarvinandMr. JahmalRaineywerepresentedwith GeorgiaCommendationMedalsfor 13and14yearsofservice, respectively,totheGeorgiaArmy NationalGuard,StateofGeorgia, andtheEagleBattalion.

SFCKevinHoffmanwasrecognizedasHerooftheGameforthe SalutetoServicefootballgameonSeptember30.Hewasalso nominatedtodaybyourCadreandStaffasthismonth'sEagle BattalionHerooftheBattlefield.Inadditiontoover22yearsof ServicetotheGeorgiaArmyNationalGuard,SFCHoffmanis assignedtotheGeorgiaSouthernROTCNationalGuard Detachment,whereheoverseesthetrainingofnearly100soldiers whoaresimultaneouslyservingintheGuardandaremembersof ROTC.HeisanincrediblementorforourCadetsandgoesoutof hiswaydailytoassistCadetsinneed.Additionally,hehas implementedaworkoutgrouptoassistCadetswithworkingout anddevelopinghealthyhabits.TheseCadetshaveundergone someamazingtransformationstomakeheight/weight,gain muscle,consistentlyincreaseACFTscores,andhelpmentorone another.Anyonewhoknowshimknowsthat"it'saboutthe soldierstotheleftandrightofyou."

OnSaturday,theEagleBattalioninvited highschoolsspanningfromSavannahto AugustaforanoverviewofROTC, demonstrationsbyCadetsandactive dutyunitsfromFt.Stewart,atourof campus,andtheevening'sfootballgame.

Duringthisevent,35Cadetswereswornin ascontractedCadets.

Dr. Paul Sobaje (Mathematics) was invitedtospeakasaMasterresearcher at the Master Class event funded and hosted by Bielefeld University in Germany September 25-27, 2023. This event, Master Class on New Developments in Finite Generation of Cohomology, featured Dr. Sobaje and twootherinternationalresearchers.

Dr.ChukaOkafor,DMD,Classof2012, visited campus this past weekend andwasrecognizedasoneofthe40 Under 40 for 2023! Chuka was able to catch up with undergraduate research advisor Dr. J. Checo Colón-Gaud (Biology) and tour the BiologicalSciencesBuilding.

The Eagle Battalion hosted its annual Salute to Service weekend September 29-30. The weekend kicked off Friday with our annual alumni reception. Alumniinattendancerangedfromtheclassesof1983 to 2022. The event provides soon-to-be lieutenants the opportunity to meet and network with alumni, as well as a chance for returning alumni to catch up withoneanother.
