CCRL - INSTRUMENT OF THE WEEK
ThisweekisfocusedontheScanningElectronMicroscope(SEM)JEOLJSM-6610LVinstrument.Thisis locatedinroom1116BofBiologicalSciencesBuildingoftheStatesboroCampus.
TheJEOLJSM-6610LVisaversatilescanningelectronmicroscope(SEM)equippedwithfeaturesthat allowfordetailedimagingandanalysisofawiderangeofmaterials.Here'sasummaryofits capabilitiesandthetypesofsamplesitcanhandle:
SampleTypes:
ConductingandNon-ConductingSamples:Theinstrumentiscapableofimagingandanalyzing bothtypesofmaterials,especiallywithitslowvacuumcapabilitiesfornon-conductivesamples.
FragileMaterials:Thelowvacuummodeallowsforhigh-resolutionimagingandchemicalanalysis offragilematerialswithoutrequiringaconductivecoatingbutwithlossofresolution.
Biological,Geological,Anthropological,andArcheologicalSamples:Theinstrumentoffersvarious analysisandimagingmethodstoinvestigatethesesolidsampletypes.
SamplesofVariousShapesandSizes:Thelargechamberanddifferentstubholdersallowfor flexibilityinsamplesizeandshape
Smallpiecesupto4-inchwafers:Theinstrumenthassubstratecompatibilityforvaryingsizes,from smallpiecestolargerwafers
Capabilities:
High-ResolutionImaging:TheJSM-6610LVcanachieveapoint-to-pointresolutionof3nmat30kV, enablingtheobservationoffinestructures.
LargeSampleHandling:Itfeaturesalargeimagingchambercapableofaccommodating specimensupto200mmindiameterand80mminheight.
DualLiveImaging:Userscancomparesecondaryelectronimageswithback-scattered compositionimagestoevaluatecontrastingfeaturesofasample.
ElementalAnalysis(withEDS):TheBiologySEMdoesnothaveanEDScurrently.
LowVacuumMode:TheJSM-6610LVoffersalowvacuummode,whichisparticularlyusefulfor imagingspecimensthataresensitivetohighvacuumconditions,suchasthosewithverylowwater contentornon-conductivematerials,withouttheneedforaconductivecoatingbutwithlossof resolution
Inessence,theJEOLJSM-6610LVSEMisa versatiletoolforhigh-resolutionimagingand characterizationofmicrostructuresand elementalcompositioninavarietyofsolid materials,eventhosethatmaybedifficult toanalyzeundertraditionalhigh vacuumconditions.
